Streetlevel: Athom Cafe in Bushwick

Athom Cafe opened a few weeks ago but its presence at 1096 Broadway in Bushwick makes it newsworthy enough to mention even at this point; as BushwickBK put it, "Bodegas and 99-cent stores come a dime a dozen here in the Washing Machine and Refrigerator District of Broadway, and cafés owned by real-life Parisians are more unexpected." In fact, the cafe--which currently features salads, pastries, sandwiches and omelets may expand to full restaurant fare--is located in a former appliance store. Anyone been?

I haven't been there yet, but I'm really excited to try it. This area of Broadway could definitely use a few more high-quality spots, and the prices sound reasonable too.

I walked by this place the other day on my way to the new Beauty Bar on Broadway. Didn't know what to make of it, but it's good to see more stuff opening up in this part of Bushwick.

DH, you did NOT go to Beauty Bar. That is hilarious.
Athom reportedly has goat cheese and thick cut bacon on whole wheat baguette. *faint* *swoon*

Rob, what do you know about France? I bet that lady has a duvet and a bidet in her Bushwick/Bed Stuy railroad apt.

That is one thing I do miss about old Smith Street- the appliance/repair places. I used to be able to get someone to come over to fix appliances...
or buy a reconditioned used one for tenant. And deliver immediately without hassle.

With the economy the way it is I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to lock up/ take deposits to bank at night. FTS!

Hahah Mopar - a friend who lives off of Kosciusko insisted on going. It was actually fun. Really 'interesting' crowd.
mmm thick cut bacon - wonder if it is as good as that bacon they have at Northeast Kingdom which is the bacon of zeus.

I've always thought the Beauty Bar in Manhattan was beyond tragic, but perhaps this one is different...?
Posted by: 11217 at July 8, 2009 2:32 PM
Man, nothing beats a snack attack like a croissaint. Gotta try this place.
Posted by: BigMal at July 8, 2009 2:32 PM
Yeah 11217 - the one in Manhattan is obnoxious.
The one in Brooklyn is more low key and the crowd reflects the 'newcomers' in the neighborhood, and the fact there is a very popular performance space around the corner (Market Hotel)

This is cool I posted this on the forum last week....
This is really great place to finally come into the neighborhood for Stuy-Wick residents... I am going to support

@ Joe from Brooklyn your comment was really stupid....
anyways where is the Beauty Bar located in Brooklyn??
Posted by: mysideofstuy at July 8, 2009 3:16 PM
I'll probably be living here soon - but I'm not going to the Beauty Bar! I went to the one that opened in San Francisco -- what, 20 years ago???????!!!! The nail polish fumes wrecked the drinks. You'd think the place would have blown up (since everyone was smoking).
Posted by: mopar at July 8, 2009 3:17 PM
This is the BED-STUY side of Broadway. Let's keep it real!

Haha Mopar - the few times I've been to any Beauty Bars I haven't really smelled any nail polish (as i would have been out of there ASAP, as the smell makes me ill) But to each their own!
Not sure of the next closest watering hole - must be The Wreck Room on Flushing?

Oh no, Dirty Hipster! Have you not been to Tandem? So beautiful. There are other bars closer also but I don't know their names.
Posted by: mopar at July 8, 2009 5:08 PM
Mopar!! No, I haven't, I'll have to check it out. I'm really only familiar with stuff up in Ridgewick/Morgantown. I guess I have some more exploring to do!!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 8, 2009 5:18 PM
Just looked up Tandem - it's on Troutman!? When did it open? I feel like I've walked past it a million times. Is it faux speakeasyish?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 8, 2009 5:20 PM
Tandem is thank god not faux speakeasy. That shit be tired. A very nice place in the middle of a historically badnews block. gooood drinks. Tasty lil snacks.
Oh, and yeah. On topic. Go anthom! Sounds cool. I'll have to drag my self to that side of Broadway. I never seem to be over there.

Tandem is the best! Two sisters. Recycled, repurposed, and handmade. Lovely, lovely, lovely. It opened about two months ago.

I went to Athom yesterday when I got off the J train...
The cafe is really cute, I bought a apple turnover it was really tasty, I told the owner that Athom was featured on Brownstoner and to expect alot of folks to come by. I am really happy that this has come to the area!!
Posted by: mysideofstuy at July 9, 2009 9:36 AM
Yummy!
Posted by: mopar at July 9, 2009 11:57 AM
Yeah- come on. I'm starting to get offended by bloggers referring to Bedford-Stuyvesant as everything but. The south side of Broadway is Bed-Stuy, not Bushwick.
