Reality Check Rendering of Yards from MAS

mas-renderings-072909.jpg
Now that the budget and ambitions of Atlantic Yards have been scaled back and Frank Gehry has been dumped, what are we left with? Since Forest City Ratner has not been forthcoming to date, the Municipal Art Society took a stab at creating a rendering of what may be in store. As per The Post: "Instead of the bold new Brooklyn skyline proposed by Gehry, the MAS renderings portray a vision of urban blight: only the planned arena near Atlantic and Flatbush avenues and two adjacent residential towers remain, surrounded by a series of large "temporary" surface parking and other empty space." For those who want to voice their opinion on the matter, the last public hearings on the matter are being held tomorrow and Thursday from 2-5 pm and 6-8 pm at New York City Technical College's Klitgord Auditorium at Tillary and Jay Streets.

What happens if Rattner sells the team & the new owner wants to stay in NJ?

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 10:30 AM

Ratner sells the team either sooner or later. When new owners threaten to relocate, we give them even more tax payer money to stay or are left with an empty stadium.

Man am I going to get blasted for this but...I like this design better than the Geary monstrosity. At least it fits into the existing Atlantic Terminal buildings (not that I love them) and doesn't create a dense section of high rise buildings.

Or maybe it's because I walk by that Road Warrior-esque blight everyday and just want SOMETHING there.

Whatever happens... I'm soooo glad Ghery is out of the picture. His designs are so tired and ridiculous.

Very disappointed, I guess in this city only Manhattan get the good stuff we are left with empty promises, Brooklyn deserves better.

the new design for the arena is dull for sure, just like the atlantic terminal and the atlantic center. there's a weird kind of bland, witless consistency. on the more positive side: 1) they are low rise structures, and 2) none are built for the ages. I thirty years or so, they'll be knocked down and hopefully be replaced by something good.

Gehry and his fans are the realization of the emperor with no clothes story. There is probably a great imaginative architect out there who does not bully, brown-nose or schmoozes and can design a beautiful arena/business/residential center. But talented people don't get hired by untalented people. The new designs are better, but these self-serving developers are turning Brooklyn into some nondescript mid-western college city.
