Biff, this is from yesterday's OT thread. Posted it late in the evening so not sure you saw it...

You have to do a pretty hard chop and risk damaging your wrist if you don't know what you're doing. Your elbows and knees are actually much stronger bones than your hands and feet so if you want to cause damage for a guy not to fight back, you have to hit with those. Remind me to tell you a story about that next time I see you.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 9:38 AM

I am not sure if I will regret posting this here, but whatever. I could probably get more objective advice here than anywhere else i'd ask around.

Maybe i'm dense or something, but I didn't realize it before, but i've come to realize that basically all of my friends are on drugs. Also, my 1/2 brother and 1/2 sister (17 and 18) are also using. The only person in my life who doesnt use was my ex boyfriend, who up until about 2 months ago, i considered my best friend and we always hung out. When he found a new boyfriend he told me he couldn't see me anymore and dropped all forms of communication. I didn't fight it thought, because i can completely understand where he is coming from. sort of.

I've been so completely down about the whole economy thing in general. I totally notice less people on the train in the morning (not just because it's summer either, i've noticed it even last winter and in the fall, but it's even worse now). Granted I don't miss a crowded train but when i see empty seats on it during rush hour in the morning i get panicky looking around thinking when the next shoe will drop and it's my turn. does anyone else feel this way? On the morning news every morning i swear there is always so segment about how to feel better in this crisis, but it's always stupid stuff like making sure to buy shoes or making yourself a nice dessert.

I think this upcoming fall is going to be catastrophic and im not just channelling the what (he is on my sh-t list these days btw), it just is and i feel like everyone really does have blinders on, but for good reason.

Any advice on how to get thru this horrible feeling?!

sorry i dont mean to be a whiner OR a debbie downer this morning (seriously those kinds of people are SO annoying)

did anyone watch the finale of Charm School last night? I wont say who won in case anyone DVR'd it, but it was good, i actually shed a couple of tears watching it. Ricki Lake was a good host this season, and the whole season was rather kinda sad because they focused on negative stuff, last season with Sharon Osbourne had great people on the show but it was lame what sharon focused on. nothing will ever match the first season of charm school with one of my personal heroes, Mo'Nique!

what are your friends on ROb?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 9:40 AM

If you want to feel better about your life, just feel that happiness that comes from knowing that your life is nowhere near as sad as "What's."

Also, the economy will get worse, so enjoy things as they are now. Cherish the memories you create in these next few years.

Rob,

All I can say is that you're not the only one. We all joke around economy and jobs on here but I am sure quite a few of us feel the same way as you. I'll tell you my views but not on here. We'll have to get drunk at the next get together and discuss. I still owe you a drink BTW that you didn't cash out on in Draft Barn.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 9:44 AM

Kens, thanks. Why is it every Russian male knows how to fight? I think all those American propoganda films in the '80s that featured a Russian villain getting his ass kicked by an American patriot gave us a false sense of security. Seems like the average American male wouldn't stand a chance in a fight against the average Russian male. Perhaps it's the military training there?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 9:44 AM

Rob, Have you given any more thought to finding a therapist? It can be very helpful, and you do seem a bit down, but amazingly resilient. Some therapists will work a payment with you via 'sliding scale' or for very little $$.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 28, 2009 9:44 AM

Alitheia, I know you are knew here but we back our theories with examples here, otherwise you'll be brushed off as WHAT. what makes you think the economy will get worse? Can you give specific examples as to how and why?

Do you mean that a standard of living will get worse for an average person?

Alitheia, if that's true, I want to know the language that, when spoken, will make my other parts hard.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 9:49 AM

Rob - I thought you'd decided to see a therapist when you were feeling down a couple of weeks ago. Real life does have downers but there's a lot to be enjoyed too. These periodic lows of yours are valid but it sounds as if you have an existential angst that could benefit by treatment. As I recall, several PLUSAs had ideas of places you could go for help.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 9:50 AM

I agree Kens. This type of blanket statement without any background or support is just going to lessen her credibility....

"Also, the economy will get worse, so enjoy things as they are now. Cherish the memories you create in these next few years.

Posted by: Alitheia at July 28, 2009 9:41 AM"

I suggest you look at the rate of change of the economic indicators. The majority of them have a positive second derivative.

EVEN HOME PRICES WERE UP MONTH ON MONTH IN MAY!!!!

No, we are certainly NOT out of the woods yet.

oh totally. it's the aquarius in me.

im pretty sure i'd be the same ole me wandering around the streets pushing a shopping cart. it just sorta sucks to have to think about those kinds of things you know?

honestly, im a little leery of therapists for the fact that i understand my problems and really don't think it's worth the money, for now anyway.

i know it's lame, but since i have a degree in psychology anyway and watch lots of tv shows about such things, i am capable of understanding myself. i know that might fly in the face of what some people believe, and i know therapy is very important for some people. but for me, i think it would complicate things and not really get anywhere, but i could be wrong. it's also very very very difficult to find a good match when it comes to patient/therapist. probably about 80-90 percent of therapy isnt productive.

Biff,

you actually might be right. Same story with Israelis. You kind of grow up on that. In 1st grade, we learned the safety precautions and how to hide under desks and basements in case of an attack. We had a shooting target class at 9 years old (2nd grade) and I learned how to hold a Kalashnikov properly and shoot a gun. I left at 11 but in 4th-6th grade you learned how to take apart a gun and clean it and put it back together in a specific period of time. Not everyone went to the army but everyone knew how to hold a gun and pretty much defend themselves by teenage years.

Most of my fight training I had here. I did a little bit of wrestling, self-defense and jujitsu training but mostly easy sparring since I couldn't get into rings with real fighters and risk coming into corporate job with a busted face once a week. People would automatically think I got into fights every weekend and I didn't want to risk that so I stopped.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 9:53 AM

Rob - You can't look to the stars if you're in such a deep hole that you can't even see the horizon. Self-help rarely works - even Freud sought external therapy.

File under "the more things change..." category - this is from the New York Herald on October 6, 1863:

The world has seen its iron age, its silver age, its golden age and its brazen age. This is the age of shoddy.

The new brownstone palaces on Fifth Avenue, the new equipages at the Park, the new diamonds which dazzle unaccustomed eyes, the new silks and satins which rustle over loudly, as if to demand attention, the new people who live in the palaces and ride in the carriages and wear the diamonds and silks—all are shoddy. They live in shoddy houses. They ride in shoddy carriages, drawn by shoddy horses, and driven by shoddy coachmen who wear shoddy liveries. They lie upon shoddy beds which have just come from the upholsterers and still smell of shoddy varnish. They wear shoddy clothes purchased from shoddy merchants who have erected mammoth stores, which appear to be marble, but are really shoddy... Their professions and occupations are pure shoddy. They are shoddy brokers in Wall Street or shoddy manufacturers of shoddy goods, or shoddy contractors for shoddy articles for a shoddy government. Six days in the week they are shoddy business men. On the seventh they are shoddy Christians...

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 10:00 AM

Rob, Two thoughts. I can understand your thinking this.

Even therapists have therapists! We can't always see ourselves objectively. The other thing is that they might help you figure out if an anti-depressant might help?

Therapists can also help you with practical advice on how to manage feelings or resolve situations, it's not all about 'getting to know yourself' or navel-gazing!

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 28, 2009 10:01 AM

Tough crowd. Why is everyone ragging on Alitheia? I thought she was trying to send us a positive message, in the same way that many of us here have said before. That is, no matter how bad things may get, we will still try to appreciate what we have, our friends and family, and not stop trying to enjoy life.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 10:02 AM

Man Rob, I feel for you. Friends on drugs is a tough one. You can't stop them, you can't save them. You just have to look out for yourself in this situation, make sure you feel OK about where you are at and maybe you will be an inspiration to one of them to get better. In re this fall I don't think its going to be a disaster the way your gut and your sh-tlister are telling you.

Rob, I know this isn't really my business, and totally not a topic for a "real estate" blog, but if you are so constantly on edge about your economic security, why is it you are against single payer health care? I would think now of all times you would see how precarious the situation is for anyone living in this country. What happened to all those people who are no longer riding the train? If they lost their jobs, they will lose their health care, in all probability. How is it helpful to the economy at large, that people use emergency services because they have no insurance? It puzzles me that you can live so close to the edge of real poverty and not see the scare tactics being used to make you feel that something that would only be beneficial to you is bad. Maybe your "anti-Europe" rants aren't meant entirely seriously.... But if you do lose your job, will you have health care, and for how long?

Posted by: mshook at July 28, 2009 10:08 AM

I don't think rob needs a therapist. When I meet him in person he seems to be real easy going & level headed. I think his observation that many of his acquaintences have problems is just that.

And he's right, if you understand your problems and don't really want to change, then a therapist isn't going to do you any good. God knows I've got a few and would never waste my time with a therapist.

I think rob's outlet is ranting here like that. It seems he gets it off his chest and that's the best therapy.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 10:10 AM

"Six, For a second there, I thought I was reading one of WHAT's tamed rants from October 6, 2008."

Haha Kens, I left out the part the What wrote in his better days:

The individual who makes the most money - no matter how - and spends the most money - no matter for what - is considered the greatest man. To be extravagant is to be fashionable. These facts sufficiently account for the immense and brilliant audiences at the opera and the theatres, and until the final crash comes such audiences will undoubtedly continue.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 10:12 AM

Also, rob, consider Chinese medicine. In Hong Kong we don't really do talk therapy--we're all too repressed, ha ha! We go to the Chinese doctor for herbs and acupuncture when we feel low.

The Chinese doctors believe that depression is caused by system imbalance, and that to relieve it you must readjust the energy inside a person.

I guess it is the same idea as anti-depressant medication, but it is done in a more gentle, holistic way, with many thousands of years of experience behind it.

When you write that everyone you know is on drugs, my first thought was that they are all on Prozac or something like it. Because that is true of so many of my New York friends--they are not on crack or meth, they are on "meds".

Posted by: WonTon at July 28, 2009 10:12 AM

Biff, lol. I am harmless. I just know how to defend myself in a situation if need be. I would NEVER start a fight. I don't need that. I have only been in 2 street/school fights in my life where I actually had to fight. In one, I really damaged a guy pretty badly and in the second, odds were really against me lol (2 against like 15-20) and I left that one with a dislocated jaw that still comes out of socket till this day (freaks my dentist out when she says open wide).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 10:12 AM

Rob - Sorry to hear that you're feeling so down. It had seemed that you were doing better lately (my impression via your posts). Depression is a real disease, and while a therapist might not be the answer, you do need some outside help to deal with it. People find comfort in many ways, either through art, music, religion, or anything that engages you and makes you feel better. You could also look into support groups, getting into a new hobby, ir just getting out there and meeting people. Good luck.

Wonton has some good points there, I've used Acupuncture and other Chinese medicine techniques. They can be very successful and helpful.

On that note, I also have a friend that has managed prostate cancer using Chinese medicine and his regular doctor is surprised and very pleased with the results, to date. [It's ongoing.]

DIBS is probably right, but rob- trust us- all of us feel the same way at one time or another. Maybe therapy isn't helpful to you in a one on one- how about finding a peer support group? Or take an art therapy class? Even volunteering could help- but most important for you I think, is to make some change in your life, break the routine. Not speaking out of my hat- been there, done that. All of us go to scary places in our lives at some point or another- just know you aren't alone.

6years- thanks for posting that! Don't they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same?

Posted by: bxgrl at July 28, 2009 10:21 AM

So the gathering on the 6th will be a bday festival for the aging members & a rebirth celebration for Rob.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 10:21 AM

Cobble, shoot a regular hand gun, I think a 9mm or maybe a 22. No way could I shoot a Kalashnikov at 9 years old lol. I could barely hold it up. It would definitely damage my shoulder if I tried to squeeze out a round. I had a hard time holding AK47 steady at my age while shooting when I went to gun ranges in Poconos.

This is late 80s we're talking about. Not sure they do it now anymore.

We also had a sawing and crochet class BTW. We learned to make pillows in 1st grade as well so don't think of it as some crazy military country. It was very accepted there. No one forced you into anything but knowledge to use your hands and physical labor was stressed as much as using your brain.

If you have a real strong positive mental attitude, like I believe rob actually has, you can psychologically counterbalance some very bad physiological/medical issues. A lot of your stamina to overcome both physical illness and depression will come from your sheer willpower to "not let it get to you." I think rob has that mentality.

I told someone I know who was diagnosed with cancer that "A lot of it has to do with how you react and deal with it. A lot of it will depend upon your mental attitude." I know.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 10:23 AM

DH, not necessarily. You just need to learn about moderation, my friend. :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 10:25 AM

Rob,
Cobblehiller put it best - you are a very resilient guy. Try not to worry about the economy or the state of the world in general too much. Whereas it's good to be concerned for others, no-one is supposed to take all of the problems of the world on his own shoulders.
Take everything one day at a time (a cliche but true) and deal with things when they arise.
I don't know much about therapists either way.

Posted by: etson at July 28, 2009 10:25 AM

Rob
I think a key element is that you recognize that you are "down" rather than slipping into depression, which as you know is a big difference.
I think it's very normal to have down periods in one's life. You are realizing that things are hard and your anixiety has probably increased b/c you have a genuine fear of the unknown. Remaining positive and always belieiving things WILL change around for the better is one way to combat that.
The issue with all your friends being on drugs is scary. I am the opposite, most of my friends are pretty clean except for a few that take anti-anxiety pills or a little weed. I suspect those people who are on serious drugs are in a dark space and need the pain to be numbed
consider yourself a stronger person as you are experiencing your pain and that is what is making you a stronger individual,

Rob, There is a really good book about that that I just finished and can give you at the next get together. It's called "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. The guy who wrote the book is a Holocaust survivor who is also a Logotherapist (Similar to Psychotherapist). This is not religion or some higher power based book or anything. He describes his and others experiences in Holocaust when times were really really bad and their mental states and how much your mind can push you through some tough times. One thing he mentions is that you will be surprised of how much the human body and mind is really capable of once put in hard situations as long as you're living for some meaning or something to look forward to.

I was thinking of posting this question of the forum, but held off because it is not really appropriate--but since the subject came up here: Anyone know of a good acupuncturist in Brooklyn? There are a couple in Park Slope, but I don't know if they are the real deal.

Posted by: dylanfan at July 28, 2009 10:32 AM

Posted by: CG_ups at July 28, 2009 10:35 AM

gabriel sher! found him via a recommendation and thought he did a good job. not a fan of the herbal medicine part though.

Posted by: CG_ups at July 28, 2009 10:38 AM

"dylanfan. sorry i don't know any in brooklyn, but i know a good one in the city,"

Yes, when I get home in the evening I too feel like I've gone from the "city" to the country. I also like it how some oldtimer livery drivers refer to certain parts of Brooklyn as "downtown."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 10:39 AM

I usually go to an acupuncturist in Chinatown.

But on a few occasions I have visited the Chinese doctor who works at the place on 7th Avenue called "Spring Thyme". I can't remember his surname--it might be Chan. Anyway he is Cantonese from Guangdong province in China, went to a TCM school there, and I had good results from his work.

Spring Thyme, though, is pricier than Chinatown. I think the fee was $75.

playing with a child is great solution for feeling down. Kids are 24/7 happy go-lucky, giggle a-lots. Plus they remind you there are so many things to find joy in (ie on/off switch, ants, pigeons, squirrels, dogs,.....).

Rob, know of any toddlers that you can babysit?

Posted by: more4less at July 28, 2009 10:41 AM

I feel very strongly about the idea that feelings play an important role in health. While it's true to a degree, that gets warped into "think well & you'll get better" which is truly invidious. People used to congratulate me on conquering cancer w/ my "can do" attitude. The attitude helped me emotionally but the surgery is what helped me survive. Meanwhile a friend of mine who succumbed was told by her mother & sister that it was her fault - her bohemian lifestyle - & that she should rally round & think positively. That puts yet more psychological wear & tear on the person. You have to be really careful when you throw the idea around.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 10:42 AM

kens- one of the things firefighters and cops are known for is that "suck it up" attitude. Unfortunately they take it to the extreme- it took 9-11 to force departments and families to understand that resiliency and sucking it up are very different things.some of the stories they tell are so horrifying you can't believe they can cope- but people ar so amazing.

Borrow that book, rob- and if your friends are not healthy to be around, let them go.

MM is a Yalie ( here's a bucket, kens).

Biff, biff, biff- have we not discussed that Ivy League does not mean a school covered with foliage? :-)

But M4L is right (nice of you to offer the champettes)- nothing like playing with kids to live your spirits. I so miss my niece and nephew when they were in the toddler stage. I used to call my sister up every weekend and demand she bring them down to Brooklyn for my baby "fix".

no wonder i can't buy anything - everyone in brooklyn went to an ivy league school

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 11:07 AM

Kens, I walked along all of Manhattan Beach. And I did see the McMansions, which, for some reason I preferred to the McMillsions in Mill Basin. Maybe because they were the first homes like that I saw in Brooklyn, so it was a surprise to me. Can't remember where I ate though.

CG, The Death Star moniker is in no way an indication of the financial strength of my employer. I was referring to it in that way from the day I arrived, which was well before the current economic collapse. It is for other reasons that I call it The Death Star.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 11:24 AM

Based on an article I read about Harvard's faltering/screwed up financial situation, I'm thinking it's going to be getting a lot easier to get into Harvard if you've got the money to pay for it, and less so if you don't. I could be wrong.

Hey Rob,

Sorry to hear about your friends. I can empathize - I had similar experiences with friends and a horrific experience with a sibling and drugs. Like Kens, I'd be happy to share my experiences with you, but not on the OT. Are you going to Ellis on the 6th?

As for the economy, let's just say I work for [Insert Name of Major TARP Recipient Here], and, though I haven't noticed fewer people on the subway, barely a day goes by without one of my colleagues disappearing. And no one ever tells you; the only way you find out someone is gone is when your e-mail bounces back as "undeliverable" and their voicemail plays "You have reached a non-working number . . . "

As for therapy, as bxgrl said, been there, done that, and there are pros and cons, though I'm not a big proponent of meds. Again, I'd be happy to discuss, but not on the OT.

CH - Harvard has the largest endowment of any school (many many billions), probably double the next closest. During Larry Summers tenure, he instituted programs so that Harvard can truly be need-blind. Families making under $60k a year don't have to pay for room OR board, etc. It set the standard for other top schools to follow, such as Yale. Even with less stellar performance from the people managing Harvard's endowment, they are still fine. If you're smart and special enough, they'll take you even if you have no money :)

People cannot service their debts any more Dave. Most 2Q reports Company revenues are down between 15-35% and the market is not "Discounting" them. It's back to School time and those items are down. I have been driving around the city and I notice the roads are empty, restaurants are empty and people are staying home. I think this current economic activity will be reflected in 3 quarter. Investors will have to make a decision (Bail or Fail)..

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 11:57 AM

M4L, legal field is pretty bad right now. even Columbia law degree might not help. I should know, I spent 6 years in the legal field and a few lawyers on this site can add to that. Also best friend is a legal recruiter for one of the top law firms and things aint looking better anytime soon, not because of the economy but because of supply of lawyers out there currently. Too many law schools graduating too many lawyers.

I think in the upcoming years, either law school term of education is going to increase or the BAR exam (going on today actually) is going to be revised to a harder exam. This has happened in fields like Pharmacy and Speech Pathology. Matter of time it'll happen to Law as well.

I think the thing to remember about What is that he hates MM because she is everything he could never hope to be- smart, talented, well-liked, accomplished, involved in helping her community and educated. (Yale on a scholarship- that means serious brains- another What lack.) So the only response he is capable of is an infantile "MM is stupid" because he isn't capable of responding with any logic, intelligence or credibility.

I mean, he's barely capable of putting a coherent sentence together- he's hardly going to claim to admire a strong, capable woman who can write rings around his little, whiney a$$

Posted by: bxgrl at July 28, 2009 12:07 PM

M4L. There is a little demand for tax lawyers but they don't really need CPAs to be one. I know of two that are tax lawyers and they have undergrads in psychology and political science. PLUS, tax law is BORING as SHIT. Good money though and you don't nearly put in as much hours as compared to other law fields working for a large law firm. Now if you go for your own small practice, salary and hours vary tremendously.

is anyone here? i could seriously use some advice. remember when i mentioned (ugh) like 2 months ago that i have been audited for the years 2003 and 2004 for state taxes and they are giving me HUGE penalty fees and interest, basically sending me a bill for over 4000 dollars. i called the IRS and they told me to just download the old forms online and i did but they are SO confusing. i do have my W2s tho. ive been putting it off, which is probably bad. should i just go see someone at like H&R block or something? how much do you think they'd charge me to do these taxes? i am certain i dont really owe anything as i never had owed anything. my ex used to do my taxes and he just conveniently forgot to them those two years, but did the federal ones. i know i should have been a little more on top of things like that, stuff like that always comes to bite you in the butt.

anyway, do you think i need a tax attorney for this, or just an accountant? or should i try to do them myself? i looked over the forms and they hurt my brain. literally.

Rob, I know you've had a tough childhood. Whether or not you think you are 'over' it, you are not until you've had some help understanding it. If I recall you smoke, and sometimes you drink too much, and also dabble in other stuff. In all probability you are 'self-medicating' to help you exist. I also sense you are agoraphobic to some degree.

Of course this kind of mess also can give one some redeeming qualities, as DIBS and others have pointed out.

You also should not give up on finding a partner. Someone who takes an interest in you, besides your internet friends, can help you along the path.

So unfortunately I have to agree with some of the other posters who have suggested a session with a therapist. You should give it a try, even a single session and see what you think. You live in PS, for crissake, there's one on every corner. Just don't get one who thinks more drugs are the answer.

Posted by: denton at July 28, 2009 12:33 PM

Yes What, it is only the "edumedicated" people that ruin everything.

Blame it all on those who have something that you don't, an education.

Someday this fool's gonna learn something....

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 12:35 PM

You just need an accountant Rob. If it is something that is likely to involve negotiating with the IRS, I would try to get someone better than they would have at H&R Block.

If it is just forms that need to be filled out, I think there are free services that can help if you are below a certain income level.

Posted by: etson at July 28, 2009 12:36 PM

Rob, you don't call the IRS for state taxes! I guess you just didn't file taxes for those years? nice... I see a payment plan in your future.

Thanks, Kens, but we don't all fit the stereotype! I remember a guy who got in because his family had been there for generations. His major contribution to campus life was during his freshman year, when he figured out how to light a bowling ball on fire and drop it out of a fifth floor dorm window. He then had a keg party in his own eighth floor room, and constructed a funnel all the way down to the street so that passersby could get themselves some suds.

All I know is that I was in New Paltz this weekend and you couldn't get a parking spot at the national park and we barely got a table for dinner at one of the touristy restaurants on the Hudson (which wasn't even one of the most popular ones).

I would also believe the articles that said that there is much less travel by car because of the economy IF I DIDN'T STAND 9 HOURS (usually would take 4.5) IN TRAFFIC ON JULY 4TH WEEKEND COMING BACK FROM ITHACA!!!!!

ENY, in the book I referenced above, there is a walking tour of East New York and Canarsie Pier. Two acquaintances of mine, lifelong Brooklynites, told me that an Asshat like me (meaning a white guy with a backpack and tour book) should probably not be walking through East New York by myself. One of the two acquaintances has a friend who is a cop and works around there.

Would you agree? In a sense, it makes me want to do it even more now as I don't like the thought of being in fear: it makes me feel like a tourist that comes to New York and is worried about walking around Central Park in broad daylight on a Sunday. Is what these people saying overblown?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 1:15 PM

denton, not the IRS that i called... im pretty sure i talked to the new york state department of taxation and finance audit division. basically it's two notice of demand for payment and tax due. each one is roughly almost 1800 each. for example on the 2003 on it says tax amount due 841, interest amount due 395, and pentalty amount due 513! then the same roughly for 2004.

they told me to fill out the 2003 and 2004 state tax forms and send them in. i have my W2s and on the forms tho, i get wages, salaries, tips part number 1. but then from part 2 on i have no clue what they are asking me to put in the boxes.
2 "taxable interest income" huh?
3."ordinary dividends" - double huh

hmm

you mentioned they could garnish my wages? ugh that would not be good. that would not fly over well at work at all.
plus it's pretty embarassing!

Denton, why do you "Just don't get one who thinks more drugs are the answer."

I don't take psych meds myself, but I know two people who do take a low dose of a popular anti-depressant, and the drugs work well for them.

I understand that some docs over-medicate people, I know one person who was a walking 'chemistry set' for awhile, but got a new psych med doc, and straightened that all out (was 4 meds!, now just one).

Posted by: dittoburg at July 28, 2009 1:20 PM

rob, unless you own mutual funds and/or have a brokerage account, interst income & dividends is likely zero. You may get some interest income through your checking account or a savings account though. 401k is tax exempt so what you earn in that does not count.

You would have a 1099 for any interest or dividends. If you have your federal returns the number could be found there as well if you've misplaced the 1099s from those years.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 1:23 PM

You probably don't have either taxable interest income or ordinary dividends, Rob.
Taxable interest income would be interest on a savings account or taxable bonds (i.e. that weren't issued by the US government or your local municipalities).
Ordinary dividends are dividends paid by stocks, so unless you own stocks you won't have any.

Rob, Manhattan is New York County, which also includes Marble Hill.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 1:34 PM

MM, would love to talk shop, as it were - especially about how New Haven's changed in recent years.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 1:38 PM

"an Asshat like me (meaning a white guy with a backpack and tour book) should probably not be walking through East New York by myself."

You'll be fine. If anything, the ENY people will think you're an undercover cop. HA HA!

Seriously, I would say it's OK to walk around the area - it's not like there aren't already white people in ENY. All I would say is keep you wits about you, as you would in any public place. The most important advice I can give you is to ACT LIKE YOU BELONG THERE. I think the people who would tend to arouse the interest of the "wrong element" are people who creep up the street with the unmistakable "OMG, I am in the ghetto!" look of fear and panic stricken across their faces.

Certainly there are people in ENY up to no good. But normally these guys hassle EACH OTHER, not random strangers. No one in particular will care that you're walking around with a backpack and book if you don't act like you're doing anything other than walking around with a backpack and book.

I did once tell Rob I thought ENY was not for him. However, that's because by his own admission, he falls down a lot and walks around in a Hannah Montana hat. These things might attract attention from the wrong element. The other thing is ENY is HIKE from almost every other part of Brooklyn (one of the reasons I no longer live there, although my Mom still does). I didn't think that would work for Rob.

Posted by: East New York at July 28, 2009 1:39 PM

Rob,
You should claim the standard deduction if you are not claiming other deductions - that will reduce the amount you owe. I just looked it up, it was $3000 last year, not sure what 2003-04 levels were.
Not sure on the others. You probably won't have them but I don't know.

Posted by: etson at July 28, 2009 1:40 PM

MM, that could work! I'll let you know when I'm doing that one. I have a bunch of neighbourhoods still to cover and it's so hard to choose which ones to do.

ENY, thank you so much for the sincere and very helpful insight. You've confirmed to me that I need to go check it out.

And I just spoke to a Trinidadian colleague of mine who has lived in Mill Basin (yes, the Mill Basin!) for years and she told me it's fine as well.

My type of scenery, DH

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 28, 2009 1:48 PM

"If anything, the ENY people will think you're an undercover cop."

- ENY, my typical scruffy weekend look will definitely give them that impression. Thankfully I got rid of the Serpico haircut a couple of decades ago.

"I think the people who would tend to arouse the interest of the "wrong element" are people who creep up the street with the unmistakable "OMG, I am in the ghetto!" look of fear and panic stricken across their faces."

- I already survived my walking tours of BedStuy and Crown Heights (the very first ones I did as I was most interested in them thanks to DIBS, MM, bxgrl et.al. on this blog), so I have learned to suppress the panic-stricken OMG-I'm-in-the-ghetto look that the typical Canadian / Brooklyn Heightian would have.

"I did once tell Rob I thought ENY was not for him. However, that's because by his own admission, he falls down a lot and walks around in a Hannah Montana hat."

- that is hilarious! He doesn't belong there because he falls down a lot. I can't stop laughing.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 1:49 PM

I used to frequently meet a friend who worked as a social worker out in East New York. Can't say I really got any bad vibes from anyone walking around. The mentality of people is funny sometimes - like in 'ghetto' areas, people are just standing around waiting for scared white people to miss their subway stop and rob them as they walk off the train. Please.

I did, however, get bad vibes when I found myself in Brownsville once. Not sure if that means anything, but I didn't feel comfortable.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 28, 2009 1:59 PM

I went to VT last weekend, where I grew up, and was more frightened of the kids playing hackysack in the downtown parking lot than I ever was walking around the streets of Brooklyn. There's a narrow-mindedness factor in small town type places that I just don't know how to deal with anymore (though that kind of makes me sound narrow minded!). Those kids can harass and be really mean and threatening to you if you look a little different. It's a little weird.

Posted by: herkimermaid at July 28, 2009 2:01 PM

Biff, last summer I walked from the northern end of Greenpoint back home to Ditmas Park. I went through Williamsburg, past the Navy Yard, then Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Prospect Park, and back home. This year I'd like to do something similar but take a more easterly swing - maybe Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, PLG, and then to Ditmas Park, probably on a Sunday in August. I'd love to have PLUSA company and assistance anywhere along the trail!

CGar, I love Chows! Gorgeous dogs. A group walking tour could be great. Email me at biff champion at yahoo dot com and maybe we can set it up with MM.

By the way, I have to confess I couldn't wait any longer to see the High Line and spontaneously went yesterday after work. I would go back if anyone is interested.

Biking is also a great way to see Brooklyn - my friends and I are planning to bike the length of Bedford Ave (i think it's the longest road in brooklyn?) on sunday - from williamsburg down to the belt parkway.

"Trinidadian colleague of mine who has lived in Mill Basin"

Mill Basin is fine as well, and to be honest, if it ever was sketchy, it was so for BLACK people, not white. I can tell you that when I grew up, black people who found themselves in that area or in, say, Canarsie had something to worry about. But that has changed since my younger days. Canarsie in particular now includes a lot of black folks. It wasn't always like that.

"I did, however, get bad vibes when I found myself in Brownsville once."

Brownsville is really a tough area. There's no getting around it. It's not unusual for ANYONE, black or white, to get bad vibes in Brownsville. Although ist's next door to ENY, the areas are different. Brownsville is made up of mostly housing projects (and not the better ones, either). ENY definitely has some housing projects, but is made up of mostly one- and two-family homes. Now, housing projects aren't inherently bad, but the sheer concentration of them in Brownsville doesn't make for the greatest atmosphere, in my opinion.

Interestingly, Brownsville is not only the home of Mike Tyson, but the "Murder Incorporated" crew of Bugsy Seigel, Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, and other famous gangsters of the 1930s.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 2:11 PM

Rob, I'm sorry to hear about your half sister and other siblings. I'll second what Denton has said. Your uncle (and probably others) were abusive. That was no way to treat a child! They were in the wrong! I'd say see a therapist, go to AA, be sober, and stop smoking. You have tons of wonderful qualities, including brains and charm. Also, I am sure you will find a partner, so don't worry about that. Everyone thinks it will never happen to them, but it does -- eventually.

"youd be shocked how many people i met in harlem that way when i lived there hahahah"

Harlem is an uptown Manhattan neighborhood. It is LIGHT YEARS away from ENY, which is akin to Far Rockaway in its sheer isolation from the rest of the city. When I worked at a restaurant in college, my Harlem friends (black and Hispanic) were scared sh**tless about ever setting foot in Brooklyn, much less ENY!

"Trinidadian colleague of mine who has lived in Mill Basin"

ENY, my post with respect to this point must have been very poorly written. I meant to say that my Trinidadian colleague (and friend) who lives in Mill Basin told me that EAST NEW YORK is fine. I know Mill Basin is fine (at least for a white guy). I walked around Mill Basin last weekend and felt less threatened than just about anywhere I've been in Brooklyn. It was like being in the 'burbs. I couldn't wait to get out. :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 2:20 PM

herkimer, where in VT? I've been going up to Southern Vermont since the late sixties (there we go, now I feel really old) and am thinking of buying a place in the Stratton area, but that's for another blog since it's Vermont real estate porn. BTW, are you going to Ellis on the 6th?

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 28, 2009 2:25 PM

Rob, in the past I've been clincially depressed, broke, and despondent about my working life and personal life. I can think of a period 15 years ago when life seemed to me as worthless as a bunch of dirty underpants.

Tackling each day as it comes, getting real help from others as necessary, continuing to apply yourself and not giving in to negativity are important, as is recognizing how much life can change (for the better). I can also say without a doubt that I am happier at 40 than I was at 25 when my head was all over the place.

hey CGer we def have to meet up since we enlisted on the same day! Will try for the 6th for sure, now that I see it's a thurs (right? calendars are hard for me). I used to have a Chow-Bernese mix. Awesome dog, totally gorgeous (red like a chow but otherwise looked like a bernese) and a funny mix of the 2 personalities: stubborn and loyal like a chow but goofy and lovable like a bernese. I'm from Brattleboro which looks quaint on the outside but has actually become quite depraved and drug-infested. so sad. it hasn't been the same since Walmart opened up across the river in NH. VT real estate eh? Apparently interesting things are happening in White River Junct; a young arts community has taken over, cafes, live music, lots of organically grown children running around... you want a weekend place?

Posted by: herkimermaid at July 28, 2009 2:39 PM

I know my way around Brattleboro well, but I had no idea what's being going on there recently, which is really too bad. I've read that about White River Junction. I'm thinking of a weekend/vacation place a bit further north, but still off Exit 2 on 91, somewhere from Jamaica in the south to Dorset in the north.

East New York was pretty cool in the 70's, there was a theater on Liberty Ave. that showed kung fu movies, a great pizzeria that served THE best zeppoles in NY complete with powdered sugar, there was a book store that must have been there since the 40's with an excellent comic book collection, there were the last remnants of the local Gambino crew at the social club who were always entertaining, Hip-hop was just starting and Afrika Bambaata and the Sugar Hill gang were booming down Atlantic Ave., at night in the summer you could cool off with the rest of the block in the hydrant on the corner. On the fourth of july; forget it. The streets were covered with red paper wrappings. People still slept on fire- escapes to beat the heat, haircuts were cheap and girls weren't too stuck up and never wore bras. In short, you were never bored and the A-train was always there to take you to Rockaway Playland or the city.

To whomever is interested: Amzi Hill and I still want to do a Bed Stuy tour and a Crown Heights tour. Both neighborhoods are too big to do in the same day. If anyone is interested, please let us know, and which neighborhood you want to see first. A decent walking tour would take at least close to 3 hours, as both of us are fonts of useless information, and the goodies in both neighborhoods are spread out, so good walking shoes are a must. We would meet near the subway, at the A at Nostrand and Fulton, and could end both tours at a local restaurant and bar, such as Peaches or Saraghina in BS, and Tavern on Nostrand in CH.

Amzi and I could wear silly hats and hold up closed umbrellas like the tour guides in Europe.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 4:01 PM

RE. BROOKLYN WALKS

I encourage everybody to take up Montrose Morris on her offer to walk around Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant. She, Amzi Hill, BxGrl and I covered part of the Crown Heights leg one recent Sunday and it was terrific!

Here's a long walk everyone may consider. I do it when I get pangs for Brooklyn:

-- Taxi or subway to Court and Montague
-- Weave around blocks adjacent to Montague to waterfront
-- Walk back to Clinton Street then south to Cobble Hill
-- In Cobble Hill weave between Clinton, Court and Smith Streets
-- Continue to Gowanus
-- Cross Gowanus into Park Slope, hitting Fifth for refreshments.
-- Get to Grand Army Plaza by way of Prospect Park
-- East on Eastern Parkway to Brooklyn Museum
-- Wind through nearby blocks back to Vanderbilt Avenue
-- North on Vanderbilt to Atlantic
-- Wind through Clinton Hill/Pratt Institute
-- Connect to Fort Greene and park
-- Pass Brooklyn Tech toward downtown
-- Catch subway or taxi at Municipal Building.

It's a good walk, but makes a wonderful cut through "brownstone" Brooklyn, mixing residential, institutional, commercial, industrial and park spaces -- and its good in most any weather (except rain, of course).

I get the craving about once a year.

Nostalgic on Park Avenue

I just saw this blind item at Blindgossip.com

BlindGossip - Which half-jock couple isn’t telling the truth about their breakup? Both parties are sticking to the same story: it was mutual and they still really, really care about each other, but their careers forced them to spend too much time apart. LOL. Not even close. The truth is that he was a dog. Not the cute, cuddly type you carry around for a photo op. No, he was the two-timing, non-condom-wearing kind of sinner. Posted by: Biff Champion at July 28, 2009 4:54 PM

Dave, I think it's possible to get rid of them in a private house but in apartment buildings, they never go away. They just move from apartment to apartment if you exterminate and bag everything but they eventually come back when you're done. We had/have them in my building for like a couple of years (when one person decided to furnish their apartment from the street or whatever) but they seems to stick around like 5 apartments and never venture into others.

Thank god that little infestation is on the other side of the building and far far away from me but it might be possible for me to get them one day (I haven't yet but there is a chance I presume).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 4:54 PM

DIBS, there was a forum thread about bed bugs within the last couple of days, and, given the choice you presented, treatable VD would seem to outweigh the bed bugs.

Hm, nope, never heard of it, but it sounds awful. I think I would rather have bed bugs and VD then that. Then again, I suppose having a conscience might help prevent the bed bugs and VD.

i know for a fact that there are bitter nasty people out there too who bring bedbugs on the train and fling them on people. be careful!

IQ or style of jeans???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 28, 2009 5:19 PM

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggonit, people like me!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 28, 2009 5:19 PM

Snappy - Do bedbugs really get into cat fur?
FWIW - If you can take some kitten hair home before you get the kitten, it gets the in-situ cat accustomed to the new guy. Worked really well for me.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 5:21 PM

"IQ or style of jeans???"

**checks pants** actually the latter! damn, that's kinda creepy DIBS!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 5:21 PM

ROB!!! NOW I'M NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO RIDE THE DAMNED TRAIN WITHOUT HAVING A PANIC ATTACK!!! AAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH :-(

"a friend of mine who lived in an east village walkup had a serious bed bug infestation. he seriously just thought they were roaches :-/"

I thought bedbugs were very tiny - how could one be mistaken for a roach?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 5:23 PM

Kens, when you admit you're looking for wife, your eyes will be trained to look for diff things / traits in girls

Posted by: more4less at July 28, 2009 5:23 PM

Hey Ken!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can I email you also?

Posted by: Expert Textpert at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM

Arkady...good idea with the kitty hair.

I don't know if bedbugs get into cat fur, but it seems like they might like that sort of hide-out!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM

wait wait. hipsters now wear Levi 501's?

Posted by: more4less at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM

I remember scoring pretty high on the IQ test but I am really dumb. I think I just generally test well on these things. I also did great on Johnson O'Connor aptitude test back in high school. Boy did I have them fulled. They said that I had an aptitude for becoming a very good surgeon or something like that.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM

M4L- aren't you going to offer me refuge in your CHN property? (I come highly recommended....oh wait....that would have been from the Great EVLL) :o(

Actually I have to email you. Look for it later - have a question.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 28, 2009 5:25 PM

from the "cost to move kitchen" forum post:

"I keep hearing this $30k number being thrown out for a "basic" kitchen that I don't understand.
I'm getting a new kitchen, bathroom, full reno on the conservatory plus argon-filled glass roof ($5k just for the glass) for that.

Is construction work just not that competitive in NY?

Posted by: the chicken at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM"

thoughts?

Posted by: the chicken at July 28, 2009 5:25 PM

" your eyes will be trained to look for diff things / traits in girls"

the eyes can't be trained to NOT to look at certain things.

Posted by: more4less at July 28, 2009 5:24 PM"

Goes to show that if you keep your clothes long enough, they eventually come back into fashion. DIBS is going to have a field day!

Posted by: the chicken at July 28, 2009 5:26 PM

texpert, If you work in the same field as BRG then Yes. wink wink

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 28, 2009 5:27 PM

Bedbugs look kind of cute under the microscope - like bugs with giant boxing gloves on.

Posted by: the chicken at July 28, 2009 5:27 PM

oh wait - I'm thinking of a different kind of bug. Bedbugs look disgusting

Posted by: the chicken at July 28, 2009 5:28 PM

Looks (& sounds) as if we're about to get the daily downpour.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 5:29 PM

To those who'd like to tour, I'll check with Amzi and get back to you post haste.

Kens, you make me feel like William F. Buckley, something no one should have to feel like. I don't use that many big words!

Bxgrl, your lease expires in October. That's plenty of time to look for a new place.

Snappy, Tidbit is a walking stomach with legs. I was going to take him to the vet this week, but I have to take my cat Lucky tomorrow in an emergency visit. He's losing weight and today his breathing didn't look good for while. I'm worried. If you can wait a bit longer, or want to take Tid without vet visit, let me know. He's at maximum cuteness.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 28, 2009 5:30 PM

Well- the last time the IQ question came up I got slapped around for telling what mine was. So I'll not do that again. Suffice it to say it was high enough to shock everyone (moi included) but ultimately was what exposed my serious hearing impairment.

Found this scary article today- anyone else see it?

Go to the Wikepedia listing for bed bugs. They prefer to feed on humans vs. pets, don't actually seem to travel well on people's clothes and, given the look of the bites, should be able to be dealt with before they spread throughout your apartment.

"No, he was the two-timing, non-condom-wearing kind of sinner. She wound up with an STD that he picked up from one of his pickups."

Yikes.....I guess Kim would chose "house infested w/bedbugs."

Last week I ran into an old pal from highschool (class of '61) who said, "RK, you haven't changed a bit! Not even your clothes!" and it was true - a shirt I'd got in 8th grade.

Posted by: Arkady at July 28, 2009 5:38 PM

DH, looking is one thing but decisions will be based on more stuff than just those "sights". when you catch yourself asking would she make a good wife, daughter in-law, good mother,..... then you've changed your priorities

"DH, looking is one thing but decisions will be based on more stuff than just those "sights". when you catch yourself asking would she make a good wife, daughter in-law, good mother,..... then you've changed your priorities"

haha - yeah i know m4l. I just feel something chauvanistic needed to be said because the guys were all sounding too level headed and emotional ;)

Glad to see my 500+ prediction came true while I had tacos at Fast & Fresh Deli on Hoyt Street and then my first ever clover coffee. Now I gotta go back and read and catch up...

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 6:32 PM

MM - if you're still out there, count me in (especially for Bed-Stuy).

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 6:47 PM

How was Fast & Fresh Six?

God I'm a PLUSA, home and checking Brownstoner instead of getting into trouble.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 28, 2009 6:47 PM

Likewise, MM, please count us in, please!

CGar, you're off the hook for mentioning the YOU-KNOW-WHATS...this time!

Aw, tidbit...too sweet!

DH, who's worse? Me or you? I signed off and am back checking! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 28, 2009 6:52 PM

dh and CH, I got you both beat. I had to work late, and here I am, getting my fix, checking in one last time before heading home. Hoping the rain holds off long enough for me to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Thanks for the special dispensation, CH. In your absence, I had to check with bxgrl!

Nytol!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 28, 2009 6:59 PM

Official PLUSA status is hereby and forthwith granted to .... CGAR!!

Congratulations and many happy returns! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 28, 2009 7:23 PM

DH, been there twice since it was ROTD. Outstanding, both times!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 28, 2009 8:07 PM

Hello, Rob. I'm this late getting to read brownstoner, and don't know if you are even awake by this time. I am sad that you are feeling sad. I want to make a post to you as soon as I can. Now I have to go -- big family things going on taking up much time. I only read about the first 12 posts of this thread. Bless you.
