For old time's sake.

I only have sake with Japanese food.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 9:19 AM
Arkady, I didn't say it. He did. I would never refer to you as "old time". On top of the D-word, he should be #1 on your whoop ass list
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 9:20 AM
how come everytime i make brownies they come out rock hard? i always follow the directions exactly! you could chip a toof on them! grrrr. i did replace vegetable oil and used olive oil this time instead, but even when id use vegetable oil they would still come out rock hard! i brought them to work to share anyway.

rob - try a lower setting on your over. it may be running hot.

Rob - You should get an oven thermometer - you're probably cooking on too-high heat.
m4L - I didn't get the old-time reference. My 'puter's screwing around - maybe there was a tinyurl I don't have?
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 9:29 AM
I think they only come out perfect if you wear the chef's hat that shown on the front of the box.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 9:29 AM
Rob, you probably putting in too much "secret ingredients".
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 9:31 AM
Rob!
you MUST only use vegetable oil
ONLY use the Betty Crocker "Dark Fudge" Family Size brownie mix
ONLY ONLY use a glass pan that is on the smallish side(little bigger than an 8x8)
just cook it for about 30-34 mins
I always throw in some walnuts and choco chips t
Posted by: gemini10 at July 22, 2009 9:32 AM
Gem - I like Duncan Hines. A neighbor kid makes them once a week & even has one of those ridiculously expensive but wonderful pans that is sort of "S" shaped so you get more edges.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 9:34 AM
Have you ever made them from scratch??? If they come from a box the only problem would be as Arkady said, the oven temperature is wrong...get one of those cheap metal thermometers that sits in the oven. Most grocery stores and hardware stores will sell them.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 9:34 AM
Mmmmmmm, more edges!!!!! I never heard of using that type of pan, Arkady.
If I think of it I'll share my mother's recipe with all of you tomorrow. Even better would be her recipe for blondies. It's a very good one and it uses margarine!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 9:37 AM
Arkady - my experience with Duncan Hines is that it's too sugary, so when you cook them the sugar sorta carmelizes but not in a good way - sorta gives the sensation of stickiness on the teeth
also with that S pan yikes- I HATE the edges - jeepies who likes the edges?
Posted by: gemini10 at July 22, 2009 9:37 AM
Rob, you're probably best off just eating the raw brownie mix. It's easier plus you will have more bean bag time AND be acting in an evironmentally friendly way, especially since you won't be using any water to wash your dishes or your oven to cook them (which will also keep down your utility and electricity bills.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 9:38 AM
I can only make one kind of cake. No matter what recipe i use, it always comes out the same. Thankfully, it tastes not too bad.

I like the edges
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 9:39 AM
The edge pan costs about $35. But it's wonderful. (I have to admit, I got it for the kid across the road so I didn't have to fight her & her siblings for edge pieces.)

i made brownies from scratch once. they were not as good as the box brands. ah, i didnt use a glass 8 x 8, i used a large metal pan and it was spread too thin. thanks!
my job is having a summer themed pot luck next week. anyone have any good summer-ish food ideas i could make? i was going to make a melon medley but that is boring. my roommate suggested getting tomatoes from the farmers market and peaches and make a salad with that with sesame oil or something like that. but im kinda open to other ideas.

Oh My - I HATE HATE HATE the edges - hahaha
when I make brownies, I cut into sqaures, but cut off the edges. Wow, no one I know likes the edges
Rob - glass pan - trust me, and def dont spread it out to thin.
As far as the potluck - does it have to be a salad or cold food item?
Posted by: gemini10 at July 22, 2009 9:43 AM
I like edging. Not sure many of you will know what that is though, and I don't mean the garden work edging.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 9:44 AM
Rob - Glass or metal depends on whether you're an edge person or not. Metal makes much better edges. Either way, Gem's right about not spreading it too thin - use pan size recommended on box.

Dirty Hipster, tell us about the McCartney concert when you check in. Unfortunately, it seemed to still be drizzling last night. There were rumours a certain drummer might appear, although he was spotted in England over the last couple of days. Any special guests? I'm guessing there were.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 9:46 AM
dave & arkady - those "s" pans are also sold in those in-flight catalogs. i forget how much but i think they're less than $35.
Posted by: winthropst at July 22, 2009 9:46 AM
gemini, I will meet you at the corner of 55th & Madison the next time you bake brownies. I will take the edges off your hands!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 9:46 AM
I detest brownies, but a friend of mine who loves to bake says to transfer the brownies into a tupperware type dish and put a smaller dish of water in there with them. Put a lid on it and the next day the brownies will still be moist and chewy.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 9:48 AM
Dibs - I don't want you upping the percent of obese Brooklynites so I'll join you at 55th & Mad.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 9:49 AM
$35 for the s pan? I think you all need to check out Amazon.com! Oh, and for things like pound cake and banana bread, it's end pieces or nothing. It's the only good part.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 9:50 AM
Snappy - Who has any left the next day?
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 9:50 AM
a) Love edges!
b) Rob, use Fannie Farmer's Brownie recipe, add choc. chips and a bit more baking choc - semi-sweet, get the oven thermometer, use the glass 8 x 8" pan. Always perfect!
c) Thanks winthropst, that was me. The Donnas! We may have to go to this one.
d) S-shaped brownie pan: http://www.solutions.com/jump.jsp?itemID=10726&itemType=PRODUCT

It was amazing. The rain didn't create much of a problem - it was misting early, but it seemed half the stadium was on line for shake shack. The show was surreal, i was sitting on the floor about halfway back and it was just an awesome atmosphere of young and old and everyone in between drinking, dancing and having a great time.
Boy Biff - Paul still has it, and sang all of the Beatles hits (2 encores)
Unfortunately no special guests - and I was a little dissapointed as I feel everyone was expecting one (Billy Joel popped into an earlier show) But it was still great, well worth the price of admission.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 9:52 AM
Just checked on Amazon - $34.95
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 9:52 AM

Dibs - haha I will put them in ziplock baggies!

I looked everywhere for a better price - this was 3 years ago. I thought maybe it was just "early adaptor" penalty but they haven't come down at all & aren't available many places.

The pan on the link I posted is more of a thick font "E" than an "S", which seems even better for edges.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 9:59 AM
Yeah Biff - and you were spot on about his supporting band too - they were amazing musicians in their own right (the samoan-looking drummer was awesome)

Does anyone know any store that carries the frozen lobster meat in a can??? I get it in Philly and it's really very good...about $20 and you get about 3-4 servings.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 10:08 AM
In '69 he was 21, but he looked about forty in Prospect Park last night--Jackson Browne can still rock too. Wanted to see McCartney as well but I don't do stadium shows anymore. Love the atmosphere DH describes; that's usually the way it is when these old guys play.
Posted by: dylanfan at July 22, 2009 10:08 AM
Cobble, do you know the exact addresses?
Arkady, close to Union Street. Do you need a mnemonic device to find it? :-)
They are the old school Italian bakeries, which I prefer to the newer, fancy schmancy ones.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 10:08 AM
Snaps - We tried that one - it's a p.i.t.a. to fill & brownies turn out more cakey than chewy.

DIBS, when it comes freebie food hand-outs, there's no such thing as calling shotgun for exclusive rights. It's he/she who shoves & maintains optimal position for the freebies, gets the freebies. if not, stare at the crumbs on the ground and regret you didn't push more aggressively
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 10:19 AM
Jerome Ave in the Bronx used to have great bakeries - I'm with Biff. I love the old fashioned ones better than the new chi-chi ones. I remember one or two down in Carroll Gardens but it seems a lot more have come up along Court St. since I left (the nerve!)

Caputo's bakery is awesome. Everything there is good, bread, cookies, etc. Mmmmm. Mazzola's on Henry St is awesome too, the lard bread is the best in the nabe in my opinion. Court Street Pastry is good for some of the real traditional seasonal stuff, like sfingi and other Italian delights. Mmm so much good stuff. Making me hungry!
DIBS - if you want fresh lobster instead of frozen, there's the Lobster Pound in Red Hook (or Fairway is right there too if you're driving, with its nice big parking lot).
Snappy - just be sure to be careful with oven temp if you use a muffin tin, they burn easier.

Of course none of these Asshats are going to actually bake anything to sell and, even if the do, they've already admitted they would eat it all on the way there. Since everyone is so eager to bake and munch, I think you all should throw a combined Happy PLUSA B-day party for Arkady, Cobble and myself complete with goodies and alcohol. (Arkady, Cobble - help me out here!) Oh, and none of us are too modest to accept gifts should you wish to shower us with them :-) Just sayin'!

Long time listener, first time caller.
I rented a garden apartment in a narrow building last year with an exclusive, nice backyard near the F train at 7th Ave. The lease began Labor Day weekend. I am attempting to negotiate now with the management company, but they are trying to make me feel grateful for a $50 monthly decrease in my rent. They said the area has been signifigantly less hurt from the falling rents around the city (world). How much harder should I push? Has anyone negotiated a new lease in the area? What kind of rent reduction is in line?
Thanks

I would neg a $100 decrease and see what they say....
Posted by: gemini10 at July 22, 2009 11:09 AM
Hey TWSS
From what I've seen - rents in Park Slope (and the rest of gentrified brooklyn for that matter) haven't really started to drop significantly yet.

Welcome TWSS!! Your non-existant Welcome Kit and Manual are in the mail!
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 22, 2009 11:11 AM
Welcome TWSS,
unfortunately your question might get lost in the noise of the Open Thread but I'll give it a go.
Check out Craigslist and see what comps are going for. Definitely go and see a couple of them to make sure they are what they say they are.
Once you've got an idea then you are in a much stronger position to negotiate. Take the price of a comparable place that you would be willing to rent and then add $150 per month to approximate moving costs and hassle. That price should be your "max", otherwise you are moving out.
If you really don't want to move out then it's a game of chicken between you and the management company.
Posted by: the chicken at July 22, 2009 11:12 AM
Anyone know of a reputable massage therapist that does house calls to Carroll Gardens? I'm totally wrecked from lugging myself around on crutches. One more month. Sigh.
I know this might be futile, but if we can keep it clean that would be lurvely. :)
TWSS - You're in Park Slope? My building in CG has had flat rents for the past 2 years. No reductions at all. And no vacancies so I would expect that the landlord views it as take it or leave it for us.
Posted by: CG_ups at July 22, 2009 11:13 AM
I just renewed 2 leases around there - kept them the same as last year. Rationale: taxes, water & insurance increased for me & apt.s were slightly below market anyway.
Thursdays are good for me too. As are Weds. I just got a haircut though so my old tiara's too big.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 11:14 AM
TWSS, remember that even if your area has not been affected, others have been. You might be happier living in a different neighbourhood for a much lower rent, or paying the same rent but getting a much nicer place.
Posted by: the chicken at July 22, 2009 11:14 AM
Hey everyone!
Rob, Dave is right. Stop at the local hardware sore and tell them you need an oven thermometer. I had the same problem in one of my old apartments. If I set the dial to 350 degrees it actually went up to 400 degrees so whatever I cook I needed to adjust down 50 degrees.
The thermometer shouldn't be more than $3-4.
Plus, don't use olive oil. it's got to be vegetable. Olive is for cooking not baking.
I'd still eat the brownie rock hard or not. I'd just microwave it for a few seconds first to soften it up.

TWSS, I'm on the Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill border, and after my Landlord initially offered a whopping $30/month rent reduction, I ultimately negotiated him down about 8%/month. One of my neighbors did the same.
CH, I thought there was a tiara wait list for us newbies?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 22, 2009 11:17 AM
twss: 50 dollar reduction is decent. we got a 50 dollar INCREASE, so just 25 each a month, not horrible. i bet we could have negotiated. my roommate didnt want to tho i dont think. he's had the apt for like 5-6 years and the rent is decent for the area (i think. 2 bedroom plus den, duplex in prewar building) 2400, well now 2450 on first and 5th. what is your current rent?
*rob*

Tiaras are overrated. Besides, the stones are fake.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 11:18 AM
Thanks everyone. I guess the hang up for me is the garden which makes it harder to find a truly comparable apartment in the area. Considering the cost of moving, I guess this turns into a game of chicken. It would be easy to flip into a commoditized apartment, but we just moved in. Unless we are saving $200 per month somewhere else, the moving premium will eat up any savings from a new, lower rent. Thanks for the warm welcome (TWHS).

But what if you live on an Avenue, not in a private building like a b-stone and you can't use bins?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 11:31 AM
I regularly put out white bags, even the smaller ones that only hold a day or two worth of stufff, bags I get from the grocery store with no drawstrings. I see lots of white bags along the street and they get picked up.
No need to rewrite that last sentence.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 11:32 AM
Snappy - I just looked at NYC.gov
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/faq/packaging.shtml
There's no mention of white at all - just injunctions about red & brown.
I use supermarket bags too but I put them in a neighbor's bin.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 11:36 AM
I put them in a bin so dogs won't gnaw on them.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 11:37 AM
Also, I've been using the same box of bags forever and a day (got a box of like 300 bags at Sam's club a year or so ago). Never had a problem until now. The 311 douche actually asked me what color bags others on the street use. I was like, how the eff should I know? I put the trash out when it's dark and I don't make a habit of inspecting other people's trash! He then tried to tell me that I must have put something in the bag that's not allowed. I asked him if I'm supposed to recycle food scraps and cat sh!t. Dillweed! I just got a call from the DOS and it turns out the jackass at 311 sent up my address as 5th ave in Manhattan so now I likely have a summons to tend to. Nimrods!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 11:37 AM
I think the only issue is the recycle bags need to be blue or clear.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 11:38 AM
But wait a sec Snappy, doesn't your building supply bins? Why do you have to put it out on the street? My building has a couple guys that come by the night before the trash pick up and stuff our little garbage bags from the bins into a big bag and curb them.
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 22, 2009 11:38 AM
Snappy, putting the white bags on the street is just tacky. It just is. That would never fly on my block. Bite the bullet get some cheap black plastic bags.
Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 11:39 AM
Cobble, I'm the only tenant (residential) in my building. There is an office below me and just my apt. above it. Living on that stretch of 5th ave, there is no room for outdoor bins...it would block the sidewalk. I have to put out my trash myself on the collection nights.

What, isn't it a moot point if he has no desire to sell?
The value can dip, tank and rise again before he wants to unload it. So isn't the bottom line what it's worth on the day he wants to lists it?

Snappy - All the pet food stores give you black bags - put your white ones in those.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 12:03 PM
Bxgirl...you hit the nail on the head as to why I've never bought black bags. I never see the black ones in any size other than gargantuan! I refuse to hold on to garbage just to fill up a sumo-sized bag. At the rate I produce garbage, it would take forever. Besides, when I get my bulk deal on white Glad bags, that's what I'm buying!

THL, stay out of it. I'm putting you on moot.
just kidding!

Arkady...Petco bags are white, Petland Discount bags are yellow...who gives you black bags? They are too small anyhow. My white bags are those tall kitchen bags.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 12:06 PM
Snappy,
Unless you got a ticket, this sounds like a missed pick up. Happens a lot.
People put out white bags on my block all the time with no incident. Unless this was recycling which must be in a clear bag (blue is ok for cans and bottles). Report it as a missed pick up. They can't ticket and will have to take it next time. Or get a can.

I refuse to buy bags at all. I use bins for recycling & market bags for rubbish. I agree w/ you 100% about trying to fill those massive black bags - stuff would petrify before it's filled.

M4L- Not ofr nothing re Sanitation men, they deal with a lot of rotting, horrible and sometimes toxic substances. A few years ago one died from chemical fumes in a garbage bag that was thrown out with regular trash. They have found dead babies and body parts- they get very little respect or appreciation. At the trade Center very few people know how much of the truly awful stuff they were responsible for taking out. While the larger remains were taken out with much ceremony and attention, the more disintegrated or minuscule remains were removed by sanitation men- many of whom volunteered on their off work hours to assist. They were wonderful, big hearted guys and the city treated their contribution like shit. No one thanked them or even understood why they were there. Bloomberg didn't even want to include the Dept. in the final closing ceremony until all the rest of us- vollies, NYPD and FDNY protested. So if we need to blame anyone, blame the city for trying to squeeze a buck out of our hides by coming up with ridiculous, unknown regulations.

Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 12:11 PM
Haha Biff! No, I'm serious though. I held onto Wells Fargo Stock that held very firm over the years, completely tanked and then shot back up to fantastic numbers before leveling back out.
Thing is the only day that REALLY matter was the day I sold it and it was after it shot way back up so I did great.
Doesn't the same principle hold for homes or am I completely missing something?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 12:12 PM
ENY, good idea, especially since they haven't exactly done too well against you-know-who this season!

Personally, I think the fresh country air might do us all a bit of good.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 12:16 PM
DOS has been doing a ticketing blitz in the area and I think maybe I'm just next on their list of folks to try and get a buck out of (more like 300!). Slopefarm...I did report it as a missed pickup...that's when the twit sent it to the Manhattan district office for DOS...the Manhattan district superintendent called me and when he discovered I didn't live in Manhattan, he told me to call 311 again because by the time I get home I'll likely have a summons since 311 effed up the info and the trash has been sitting there since Sunday night and the Brooklyn office will have no record of my complaint thanks to the 311 ninny's screw up.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 12:16 PM
Indeed, Biff there are challenges to overcome. I repeat - it's only July. We will see those teams (Red Sox/Angels) again.
Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 12:17 PM
bxgrl, my issue is sanitation can and DOES strike to ask for big raises on top of already leading-the-pack salaries while teachers, firemen, policemen,.. cant strike. Because their salaries come from the same budget, I don't like the fact my tax dollars are allocated this way.
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 12:20 PM
as long as Yankees don't play angels in the playoffs, they'll be fine. Yanks have proven to be able to beat the Sox when it counts in the playoffs - not so against the Angels.
Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 12:23 PM
M4L- I agree, but if you recall, all of those groups have struck in the past, allowed or not. Transit workers are not allowed to strike- and they did anyway.

Hmmmmmm no, Dave. "Pathetic" is posting incessantly on a real estate blog while simultaneously characterizing Twitter users as "losers." Sound familiar?
On an infinitely more important note, I nominate the following for today's quote of the day:
"I was not prepared for that," she said. "To see one of my heroes in a mugshot was not something that I was expecting. ... It just tells me we're not in a post-racial society."
She said there's a reason why you don't hear about prominent white people arrested in their homes: "because it doesn't happen."

Just to tie to completely different posts here together, I saw an obviously stinking rich white lady get arrested on main st (probably not the actual name) in East Hampton a few weeks back after she started getting shirty with a cop over a traffic incident (she was obviously in the wrong in her Maybach). She could have got off with a warning but just kept making it worse for herself by what she said. It was quite a thing for the onlookers when she was put in the cop car. Didn't make the news though.

I wouldn't. Just someone that saw something that looked suspicious and did the right thing. The police seem to have been heavy-handed but I think the neighbor is blameless.

Actually this same thing happened to us , sort of, in Philly. We have a friend who cleans the house down there. He is black. He's also partner to the guy directly behind us so he's in the neighborhood a lot. One day, while he was cleaning the house, he was sitting in our yard relaxing, having a smoke. We were not home. The yard is right up against the street as it's a corner townhouse. A neighbor, two houses away, called the cops because this black man was in our yard, sitting there, reading a magazine and smoking.

"a nearly sixty year old bespectacled professor with a blue blazer who cannot walk without the aid of a cane"
"12:30 PM in the afternoon."
Sorry etson, the neighbor doesn't get a pass from me. This guy would not appear to be a threat, or someone who would break into a house. Again, if the description were the same, with the one exception of the guy being white, would she have called the cops? Sounds like black man paranoia to me.
Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 1:59 PM
My neighbor in Brooklyn called the cops when my friend a White man in his 50's came to feed our cats and take in our mail while we were away. She had to give them his well worn set of keys, the note on the counter from us with feeding/how-to instructions with his name at the top Dear Ken...which wouldn't you know it match his ID. They also called us to confirm the story.
So I can say that yes, it does happen to white guys. I was kinda happy my neighbor was looking out, but that's just me I guess.

ENY, we aint there but Obama being president has done wonders. He makes black parents, black kids, non-blacks,... see the positive possibilities. I even notice it in myself. I always find black kids super cute - especially kids with massive fro's. Now, I think more than "how cute they are". I often stare at them and think the kid could be a lawyer, senator, and yeah, a president. Positive perception is a very positive force. Heck, I stare at my boy and wonder if he could be president someday - something I wouldn't have ponder prior to Obama being president. Mrs Obama rocks too. That's a pretty looking family there

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 2:07 PM
Either the neighbor knew he was the homeowner and acted out of irrational spite by calling the police, or she didn't, saw something untoward, and acted out of goodwill.
Don't see how it being 1230pm influences anything. Afternoon burglaries are quite common b/c houses are more likely to be unoccupied.

He said he did sing his heart out in all 3 but he enjoyed yesterday's show the most.

"Afternoon burglaries are quite common b/c houses are more likely to be unoccupied."
According to.....?
Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 2:18 PM
As Brandon Terry said, this was an older Black man in a blue blazer, with all his luggage , and who needs a cane to walk. Yep! My first thought would have been ooooohhh- Burglar. NOT. I can understand someone being nervous and wondering what's going on but the self made vigilante should also have a big dose of common sense and an awareness who her neighbors are. No pass from me either. Stuff like that happened to me and my husband. Cops stopping us on the street to be sure he wasn't bothering me. (Yes- because I always walked hand in hand with a strange Black man sown the street), or stopping him in NJ for "driving too slow."
It happens and no amount of similar examples with white people makes the fact that racism still exists go away. Because you know if the neighbor had seen a white guy doing the same thing she would have gone over herself and asked if the door was jammed. Not called the cops.
The cop? As soon as he knew Gates was the homeowner he should have apologized for the inconvenience and got out. He could have easily ignored Gate's understandable upset and just walked away. Last I heard it is still a free speech country- we don't have speech police.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 2:22 PM
Just checked - about 40% of burglaries are in daytime, so "quite common" = fair description.
My initial comment was based on experiences growing up in an area that had a fairly large burglary problem, and I would have guessed slightly higher than that.
Posted by: etson at July 22, 2009 2:23 PM
etson- 12:30pm is full daylight. The neighbor couldn't see it was Gates? Couldn't see the luggage? The cane? If she was that blind she had no business calling the police.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 2:23 PM
One would think that the woman would have recongnized her neighbor, Henry Louis Gates. Dr. Gates is a big deal at Harvard. This woman, Lucia Whalen, works at Harvard, specifically as head of Fundraising. She would likely be familiar with the bigwigs at Harvard. Frankly, the situation is sad, it sounds like people at every point over-reacted. Unfortunately, being a minority is still tough in this country, and I think that's why this story resonates with and frustrates so many people.
Posted by: CG_ups at July 22, 2009 2:24 PM
Wouldn't the fact that it's daytime be more reason that the neighbor should have been able to see Prof. Gates and his cane and luggage (Do thieves carry luggage?!) more easily.
No, no pass. She owes Prof. Gates an apology.

I understand ENY, but, had he shown the cop his ID when asked do you think it would have escalated like it did? The cops were just responding to a call. I understand that this might be outrageous to him to be asked to prove that he is the owner of his home but what is the cop supposed to do when he's asked to investigate a robbery? Yes, I completely agree that the incident escalated to the point of absurdity. I don't understand why he was so confrontational from the get go. If it had been someone robbing his home he'd have been glad the cops responded. Didi they go too far once they confirmed he was the homeowner, yes. Did gates act unreasonably towards people who's job it is to respond to calls and were just trying to protect his home, yes.
Wrong on all counts.
_____________________________________________________
The officer asked Gates to "step out onto the porch and speak with me," the report says. "[Gates] replied, 'No, I will not.' He then demanded to know who I was. I told him that I was 'Sgt. Crowley from the Cambridge Police' and that I was 'investigating a report of a break in progress' at the residence.
"While I was making this statement, Gates opened the front door and exclaimed, 'Why, because I'm a black man in America?' "
According to the report, Gates initially refused to show the officer his identification, instead asking for the officer's ID. But Gates eventually did show the officer his identification that included his home address.
"The police report says I was engaged in loud and tumultuous behavior. That's a joke," Gates told The Root. "It escalated as follows: I kept saying to him, 'What is your name, and what is your badge number?' and he refused to respond. I asked him three times, and he refused to respond. And then I said, 'You're not responding because I'm a black man, and you're a white officer.'"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2009 2:30 PM
Biff, me too. He hasn't made single mistake so far - so why would his appoval go down? Doesn't make sense.
Bxgrl, re. your statement "It happens and no amount of similar examples with white people makes the fact that racism still exists go away", the point of those examples is that it does happen. It is not reported because it is not newsworthy, but that lack of stories gives the false impression that it only happens when its a black man. Its all part of the inflammatory fog of race war that accompanies these issues. People saying he got arrested in his house (rather than outside trying to get in), people saying this wouldn't happen if he were white. We can see what the facts are and this sort of hyperbole just stands to discredit otherwise worthy positions.
The bottom line is, if the neighbor saw some old black guy with a cane trying to get into a house that she knew a black guy lived in, then shes racist or a nutcase, but probably the former.
Having worked with many esteemed University professors and their egos, however, it wouldn't suprise me if Gates just said all the wrong things to the officer. I can think of a few profs. I'd like to see arrested.

Really? You can't understand why Prof. Gates was upset?
He's 60+. He'd been travelling for g*d knows how many hours from China, he was exhausted, had some kind of illness effecting his breathing, requiring a cane to aid his walking. He had trouble getting into HIS OWN home when the door jams, and then to add insult to the injury...in broad daylight, a cop walks up asking him to come outside, give ID and prove that he lives there!
Let's just add onto this the not at all uncommon incidence of black men who are owners being treated as if they must be a worker in their own home. I have a life long friend who experiences this regularly when he answers his front door here in Bklyn, and he's elderly, too.
I'd be effing angry, too. And the police should be coached trained to recognize the difference between someone they have offended and how to diffuse the situation not aggravate it further.

Perhaps not, but I can imagine the reaction of some of the posters here if after a long international flight, with bags in tow, they were approached in their homes by a cop asking you why she/he was there. Hell, I can imagine MY reaction! It's true Dr. Gates wasn't acting like a church mouse, but once he showed ID he certainly should NOT have been arrested. Furthermore, as CG Ups observes, Ms. Whalen would have every reason to know exactly who Dr. Gates is and that he lives NEXT DOOR. I'm with Dr. Gates - this was primarily about his being black.

dittoburg- I understand the reason for posting stories involving white people and I doubt anyone here would say oh only Black people get arrested. But I think I can say that if Gates had been white, it wouldn't have happened because his neighbor would have assumed- or seen- that it was him, and never called the police. In the case of the white woman arrested, she was obnoxious for no good reason. And THL's neighbors know her so they saw a stranger go into her house and acted.
But I cannot believe a woman who was a neighbor, and head of Harvard fundraising didn't recognize her own neighbor and a very famous professor at Harvard at that? I don't think she's a nutjob, I don't believe for a second she acted out of neighborly concern.

They get called out by a snippy guy who refuses to show his ID and is calling them racists. They should have just said, Oh clearly he's had a rough day. Let's just leave him be? Even if he is robbing the place I'd hate to offend him. Gates was being rude, and quite offensive. Yet, by the very nature of doing their job they've offended him.

I've been mildly abused by cops in Florida, refused service multiple times in Pennsylvania (cabs at the airport for crissakes), conveniently shuttled to an empty back room when front tables are available in NJ (ALL THE TIME). Every time it happens, it really sucks and I feel like sh*t. It's hard to shake. I'm sure that Dr. Gates has endured much more and way worse over his lifetime, so his reaction in my opinion was within reason. This kind of crap totally sucks and I have a hard time understanding why people want so hard to excuse the behavior of Ms. Whalen and the police in this case.

I'm saying I understand why he was upset. And I'm saying the police should be able to sort out and calm a situation down and not end up arresting a upstanding citizen who was offended by their mistake.

Sorry - Bxgrl, I love you but I don't agree with what you're saying which is basically the neighbor of the professor knew him, and chose to call the police on him just to give him a hard time because she is racist.
perhaps she didn't know who he was - perhaps she would have done the same thing if a white, brown, lavendar or seafoam green person was doing the same thing.
I think we're doing too much assuming about HER.

THL- the police report says Gates did produce id, and the officer says he gave Gates his name but would not give his badge number. By law, I think, in NYC they must do that. But I think the training would be better if it addressed better assessment of situations like this through considering all the facts. So yes, I agree they should have apologized and just left, despite him being rude. I imagine he thought it was unspeakably rude of them to even ask who he was. And I'm sure the cop was at his intimidating best- because they are trained to control a situation. Except, unfortunately, this officer didn't do that very well or correctly.

I'm not saying she called them to purposefully give Gates a hard time. I call her racist because she assumed a Black man dealing with a jammed door- (despite him being a neighbor, a famous Harvard professor whose presence is a source of money for the university, had luggage and a cane-) had to be a robber.

CG ups - I think the neighbor has the suspect motives here. But if you escalate a situation with a cop, who is used to people doing what he says, you're gonna end up in trouble. I've seen it happen with friends. They'll take you in cos they're all pissed off with yout attitude. Having said that, we all know racial profiling happens.
As to your cited experiences, I can't say that they weren't due to racism. But let me tell you this - I have been ignored by the waiter in favor of others, didn't get a job I was supremely qualified for and have been in many other situations were I felt I was treated differently, but without any obvious explanantion. If I were a minority, I doubtlessly would have considered it was due to the fact I was such.
Quite frankly, to a white police officer " 'Why, because I'm a black man in America?'" probably sounds like an attempt to pull the race card than a legitimate challenge. Do you think he's never heard such a statement before?

OK bxgrl - gotcha. But we can't judge someone based on what we think they won't do.
She saw somebody engaging in suspicious behavior (trying to pry open his front door) who happened to be black. She called the police. Sounds like a good neighbor to me. I'd expect you all to do the same for me, unless it was a fine honey wearing a bikini.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 3:07 PM
Does someone want to tell me how they would respond to someone who is in a home that has been reported to have been broken into? The person initially refuses to step outside, produce ID and is saying you're just there because he's black and you're white? Do you know if he has a weapon, are there others inside, is he just trying to delay you so someone can exit through the back or get a bead on you?
yup, cops are always the guilty party regardless of the circumstance. I get it.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 3:08 PM
On the other hand, ditto, if you were a minority, those things would happen at a greater rate- which is the issue. No one gets everything their way all the time, and who knows why you didn't get that job? But I can safely say there isn't a note in your HR file that says "candidate is a white man" as there was in my friend's brother's HR file when he applied for a job he was supremely qualified for and highly recommended for. So a less qualified white guy got the job. My friend's brother found out because the friend who recommended him to the company took a look at his file to see why he was passed over.
And truly- there are times when the race card is used and wrong. But in this case I think Gates had a legitmate reason to ask.

I'm ambivalent about it. I don't know all my neighbors by name but I certainly know them by sight. I don't think many burglars are (somewhat) elderly & using canes whatever color they are. I wonder about a high-profile Harvard Fund-Raiser's not recognizing Gates. There are conflicting stories about the cop/Gates dialogue so, while I think he was probably as civil as anyone older (not old, by any means) & lagged & frustrated at not being able to open his front door would be. The only good thing to've come out of it was the police dept. recognized what a can of worms it was & dropped it.
At base, though, I think it was bias on the part of both the neighbor & the cops.

I think etson might just be harking back to an old British campaign to stop local crime called "neighborhood watch" where all neighbors were expected to call in unusual acitivty they'd seen to the cops. If you took part it meant you were a good neighbor.
Posted by: dittoburg at July 22, 2009 3:19 PM
THL- the cops are not always wrong. I'm the first one to defend them and have done so many times on b'stoner. But they certainly could have handled this better and the neighbor is an idiot in any case.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 3:19 PM
ENY- Even if that is true.
The cop didn't call in to base saying we just saw a black man trying to pry open a door and we're going to investigate. They got called to respond to the alleged break in at the house.
That said I can't see how in this particular instance he could be accused of profiling.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 3:19 PM
I'm appalled, rob. You must be a big fan of Rush Limbaugh or not very much about what is going on in this country. Did you vote?
Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 3:21 PM
ditto- I don't think even that program meant you were supposed to call the cops on the neighbor entering is own home. Isn't the premise that you know who your neighbors are?
Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 3:22 PM
I won't touch the issue of whether or not there was malice in the heart of the neighbor - I can't presume to know what she was thinking or feeling. As far as Mr. Gates and the responding police officers, I think both parties acted badly. Do I understand his anger and frustration with the situation? You bet. Should the cops automatically know he's not up to no good? Nope. They had a right to ask him for ID...not just a right but an obligation to ask for ID based on the call they received. I think both sides got too heated too quickly and this was the unfortunate result.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 3:23 PM
"But they certainly could have handled this better..."
Agreed, but only after he finally produced his ID. There was NO reason whatsoever for them to have arrested him. That crossed a line.

Guess I did grow up in a place where burglary was at the time a bigger deal than racial politics. High incidence of burglary and both burglars and victims were almost always white.

Bxgrl - I don't know all my neighbors. Could she be a racist bitch? Sure. Could she either A) Not know Gates B) Not recognized Gates - yuppers.
I'll refrain from sharpening my pitchfork and igniting my torch until I am shown evidence proving them necessary.
The cop, as ENY posted, has a history of racial profiling. I think we can freely call him a racist douchebag now.
this kinda reminds me (not sure if it was mentioned above) when some hipster bitch in the bedford ave station got stopped by a hasidic officer because she had a dog on the train. she accused him of brutality blah blah blah and everyone jumped on the misogynistic hasidic bandwagon. It turns out she actually resisted arrest and was spewing anti-semetic slurs at him.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 3:26 PM
"ENY- Even if that is true."
I can't say if it's true or not, but it does raise some questions that are worth looking into.
"They got called to respond to the alleged break in at the house."
By a neighbor who likely told the cops "a black man is trying to break into the house next door."
"That said I can't see how in this particular instance he could be accused of profiling."
From the Huffington Post article: "I talked to a black Cambridge cop about racial profiling in Cambridge recently. He told me that while all police officers in Cambridge racially profile, black officers were smarter about it. He elaborated saying that while black officers check clothes, age, and demeanor of men while profiling African Americans, white officers were "stupid about it" and simply profiled all African Americans, without any regard to the rest of their appearance. This explains why a well groomed, 60-year-old man wearing a blazer and glasses would get the same treatment as a young black man with baggy pants and a doo-rag in Cambridge."

The cops,The neighbor and Prof.Gates. - but Gates gets a pass as he was delierious from that 18 hour flight from China. Can you blame him?
The cops were pissed b/c they had to leave their post eating at the new Tim Horton's donut shop
The neighbor lady cleary is having an affair with Prof gates that obviously ended right before he jaunted off to China,so she was just getting back at him!

______________________________________________
Cut and paste much ENY? Wow, nice the way you twisted that.
The neighbor calls into the police precinct. She didn't call them on their cell phones in the squad car. The precinct relays the information to the officers. Your use of the word 'likely' is nothing more than a convenient to your plot line guess. Have you ever called the cops? I have, when some teen boys were trying to steal another kids bag. They ask you to give physical descriptions if you're able to.
As to whether the entirety of the white police force in Cambridge profiles certainly is of importance and should be looked at but not as it relates to this story.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 22, 2009 3:36 PM
to add some fuel to this racial b.s., I just saw a outrageous & funny piece on CNN as I was refilling my cup of water. Someone is asking for Obama to prove that he's born in the U.S. (ie to prove he has right to be president). man, even clowns get big network coverage.

Rob, I think you would love my ol' motherland. Communism would work for you. Everyone is "technically" equal and no matter what job you had, you got an apartment, healthcare (crappy one though) and probably a bean bag and Xbox as well. As long as you weren't any other race, Jew, homosexual, had goals & ideas, wanted free speech, liked your bill of rights, or wanted more out of life, USSR would be your dreamland.

The situation sucks and it's one black folks have to deal with more often than not. Period. That said, we ALL have some kind of handicap/weakness/condition/status that might cause folks to treat us differently. The way I look at it, it's up to each individual to try to surmount his/her own barriers and seek success, and that includes black people. Still, I refuse to pretend such barriers no longer exist.
Posted by: East New York at July 22, 2009 3:42 PM
oh Gem - for the record that Jay Z track "death of autotune" is hot!

ditto- by those lights I am so not genteel :-)
dh- I'll give you she may not know Gates or recognized him. How I don't know- he is surely high profile enough (and should especially be so to a university fundraiser. ) But a little common sense- luggage? cane? well dressed? coming out of a limo? Hello?
I remember the incident with the Hasidic cop- it was very different from what happened here. So again I'll ask you- why was a Black man, in broad daylight with all indications that he was a professor coming home from a trip, to a neighborhood where he had lived for some time, be assumed to be a robber? When was the last time a robber drove up to a house by car service, had luggage, wore a blazer, and walked with a cane, break into a house in a fancy neighborhood? Never.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 3:45 PM

Posted by: bxgrl at July 22, 2009 3:50 PM
THL, I respect you as much as anyone here, and I happen to think you're pretty cool besides. But my use of the word "likely" is (in my opinion) as subjective as your account of how the information was relayed to the police, so for you to assail me on that basis is disingenuous. Of course the police ask for descriptions. And what do you think Ms. Whalen said to them? While the fact is neither of us knows exactly what she said, I'm willing to bet that she said "A black man is trying to break into the house next door" which brought the cops RUNNING.
And, not only have I called the cops, but my dad (who's deceased now) was in law enforcement, several of his best friends, including my next-door neighbor growing up in ENY, were cops, I worked with several guys who became cops while I was in college, and I even took the police test myself and passed with high marks, but opted not to join. I have a lot of experience with the police.

Posted by: more4less at July 22, 2009 3:53 PM
When I think about things like this, I become torn. Part of me wants to say, Mr. Gates - get your poop in a group and just act right....none of this would have escalated to such a point had you just kept calm, showed ID and then politely sent the officers on their merry way. Then the other side of me says, Hold the eff up...when will we black people no longer be told to keep our heads down and toes on the line so as not to kick up too much dust? I just don't know anymore. I'm tired of us black people as a group playing victim and I'm also tired of us actually being victims. And most of all, I'm tired of people in general like Mr. Gates and these cops who just take things to far.

OK, my take on the Gates situation. I agree with Bxgrl and ENY.
The Harvard worker SHOULD have recognized Gates. They don't have that many famous short, bespectacled, middle-aged black professors who live in Cambridge. He's all over public tv, the news, national forums, tv pundit shows, the works. If not from that, she should have recognized him from events around the university. There aren't that many short, bespectacled middle-aged black professors at Harvard.
At best, she should have taken a minute to see what was actually going on. I've seen people doing things that looked a bit hinky in the moment, such as trying to open a car door with a hanger. A little observation would reveal shopping bags, a child, an attache case, or panicked behavior that tell me this is the car owner, not grand theft auto. If she had taken a moment, she may have seen Skip's bags, the livery car the driver pulled up in, or best yet, she could have called a co-worker or 2 over, who may have recognized Gates, and told her who he was, or at least said that they had seen him coming and going into his house before.
The cops should have swallowed it, and put up with some verbal abuse from a tired, pissed off man with a cane who just came home from a long international trip and had to break into his house. After standing in long customs lines, waiting for luggage and a long ride home, I'd be a bit pissed too. Thank goodness his Caucasian wife wasn't home, who knows what he'd have been accused of doing besides breaking in? After showing his ID, with his address plainly on it, the cops should have apologized, and left. There was absolutely NO reason for them to have arrested him. Worse case there, they should have stayed at the house and called headquarters the minute they realized they were about to be in a bucket of deep public relations poo.
Full disclosure, Skip Gates was in grad school when I was an undergrad, and I knew him well, years ago. Scholarship was always his first love, but he never suffered racial indignities well, nor should he. He's worked hard to get where he is, and it's a shame that even now, a middle-aged, bespectacled little black man in a suit is assumed to be up to no good, rather than any other scenario possible.

Some finance jobs at the junior to mid level will specify 'MBA or CFA', so it can be a cheap, if much narrower, alternative to an MBA. I majored in history at undergrad level and don't have an MBA so it was useful for me when applying for jobs a few years ago.
Unless you are planning a career change from your current role into banking or asset management it is probably not that useful.

Rig Burn? DIBS, was that when you were showing a young Mexican bf the ropes?
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 4:28 PM
chicken, I figured that much but my grad professors seemed to think that it's a fairly prestigious designation in the field of finance and if say you're from a less superior grad school, having a CFA puts you on the same level as other CFA charter holders. I am not sure how it's perceived in the industry since I am not really in the financial industry (I do work in the analyst role but for consumer products). It used to be that in my field/company, you needed a highly ranked school MBA to be considered for a job but these days, it seems that it's all about the experience rather than degrees. My office is small but the only other person who has an MBA in my department is my Boss and I am at the bottom of the food chain.

Imeem is cool if you wanna hear something specific - as you can search for specific songs and albums.
Pandora is cool if you want to hear stuff of a certain genre, or check out some artists that sound like stuff you like.

It's brutal ENY, I've got bites on my fingers, arms, legs, my neck/shoulders! I ITCH all day long. I thought I would lose my mind last night about 4am. I was up with the lights on hunting! THWAP!! I got it! In retrospect, I think last summer was worse, but it's still just July...
And like your wife, of course, BH hasn't got ONE, not even ONE bite!!

I'm the mosquito bait at my house. No one else will get bit so long as I'm around for the chomping.
So tonight we are putting out the trap to catch the momma cat. She's pregnant and I haven't fed her all day so she's just sat on the back steps the entire day looking into the kitchen window and crying wondering why her food supply has been cut off. I really hope and pray she crawls into this damn cage to get the food. Her appointment is bright and early tomorrow morning so god help me if I don't get her tonight. It's funny, I've never been nervous about the others but this momma is a smart and special lady and the fact that she's pregnant makes me sad and completely nervous.

"Some finance jobs at the junior to mid level will specify 'MBA or CFA', so it can be a cheap, if much narrower, alternative to an MBA."
That's also what I heard - so I'd much rather study for one hard test then study for several (GMAT + tests in B-School)
Kens - i'd be down to check out the workshop - it would be nice to learn how to fix stuff on my own, as I am not a very handy person. I'd also have to run it by my overlord if I could leave early one day a week.

I think nowadays a CFA is far more difficult to get than an MBA, meaning that the preparation and the content prepares you much better than an MBA would. I got my MBA in 1980 from Kellogg (Northwestern) and compared to 4 years as an undergrad biology major, it was a cakewalk.
I got my CFA in 1984, I have a four digit CFA number and I'm sure it would take me multiple passses st it nowadays. It is far, far, far more comprehensive and difficult than an MBA in finance.
When I first started in this business in 1980, there was an oldtimer at the place I worked for who had a CFA number somewhere around 150!!!!

CFA tends to be relevant for a small number of wall street jobs. i know nobody pretty much cares here (prop trading) but if you want to go into asset management (portfolio manager) or equity research then they're quite handy. that said, it's one piece of a much larger set of requirements. if those are areas that you want to get into and went to a top 20 undergrad with a good GPA and have connections, then go for it. otherwise it will be very difficult to break into those areas, as they tend to be high demand jobs. And equity research feeds heavily from graduate training programs (recruiting directly from college undergrad and graduate programs). my advice would be to avoid research. i used to be a research analyst. it sucks now, the good days to be in research have definitely passed.

cool DH. Let me know what he/she says. Applications are available in August and I have to call first week to request one or two. Course starts September 9th or 16th I think. First level is every Wednesday for 10 weeks and second level is also on Wednesday for another 10 weeks. Let me know if you want to join. Its $160 bucks for 10 weeks! That's very cheap in my opinion and they pretty much cover everything, just not in great detail obviously.

RE. GATES
Gee, the professor's predicament is ricocheting around the world! Even here, on Brownstoner.
Now he's speaking about turning the incident into a "teaching moment" by making it a film.
Here's a suggestion: Drop by Spike Lee in Oak Bluffs this summer (no doubt you reside just a stroll away) and set it up. Spike's even old enough to play you. (And is starting to look like you, too; just give him a cane).
I imagine a version of the street action, Cambridge style, of "Do the Right Thing" (the best Brooklyn movie, ever), featuring doddering Harvard profs and administrators, wise-cracking undergraduates and skater kids, and "ethnic" cops with New-England accents.
With a special appearance by President O., calling for calm, just like Da Mayor.
Since nothing else seems to get us out of our racial quagmire, maybe satire will.
Nostalgic on Park Avenue

I want Randi to do an update of the PL of the day race. I am way behind now after pretty much staying out of the Gates discussion.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 22, 2009 4:47 PM
ENY, MM, BG, etc:
I am very familiar with the position of Dr. Gates in the intellectual African American community, and his accomplishments. I own and have read most of his works, which you can verify by looking at my Librarything profile.
In fact, given what MM says about suffering racial indignities, one of the funniest essays he wrote (it may be in 'Colored People', but I don't recall exactly) is a detailed inventory of what he was wearing several of the times he was in airports yet still was mistaken for a bellhop.
In my mind, there are two separate and distinct issues. The first, the person who called the cops. Maybe she's been pissed about that Caucasian wife all these years. But as someone said, I appreciate anyone calling the cops in a similar situation. So, let's for the sake of argument agree she's a nasty racist bitch. Unfortunately there's not much to be done about that.
Now there's the second issue, that of the police response. Here's where I have a problem. There are many times people file false reports. See above where someone admits they've falsely called in a 'man with a gun' report. The officer is supposed to objectively assess what is going on, including using his 'street smarts' (also as pointed out above) to determine who this person is. So, once Skip showed his ID, and his cane, and his general demeanor, the cop should have been outta there. And Skip shoulda thanked him. But if, as it appears, the cop was a dickhead, well, that's a whole other story.
The cop should get ditched, no doubt. The neighbor, well, that's wassup.

Re: Obama so far - I think lots of Americans are extraordinarily impatient and believe the person who occupies the Presidency is a dictator who can solve all problems by snapping his fingers, pass laws on his own, order governors to pass laws, hire good teachers, make traffic go away, and put nice chirping birds in the trees of Prospect Park. The messiah-like expectations many had of Obama don't exactly help in this case.
That said, it's possible to be educated, informed, non-racist, and opposed to Obama's policies, just as it's possible to be a heterosexual white Christian meat-eating war-fighting male opposed to Bush's policies.

There would be no Beatles without The Beach Boys
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 5:22 PM
I agree sixyears. Also think that most people overestimate the degree of impact politicians, in particular presidents, can have on the economy over short time periods.
Posted by: etson at July 22, 2009 5:22 PM
The Beatles isn't an argument - it's a fact.
Posted by: Arkady at July 22, 2009 5:22 PM
gem - get a falafel to eat before you go to dinner so your tummy will have grease to absorb the vino!
Posted by: winthropst at July 22, 2009 5:22 PM
I think the aveerage for the OT is about 250ish, right?
the lowest I have seen in recent months was just last week with maybe 80 posts
I think it was a holiday or something...
Posted by: gemini10 at July 22, 2009 5:22 PM
Uh oh...here we go...count em down folks!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 22, 2009 5:23 PM
"What's the record for a day on OT?"
Arkady, I think there were one or two 600+ days but I can't remember when. Not sure if we've ever had 700. That may be the equivalent of 80 HR or 200 RBIs in a season, or batting .400
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 22, 2009 5:23 PM
And prime ministers, etson.

Arkady - a heckuva legacy indeed - but lots of people expect miracles from Obama. I remember the story of the woman who voted for him because she thought he would pay her gas bill. People might think, well hey, the economy was bad for the last few months of Bush's term, why does it take Obama so long to get out of a recession? Every President inherits something from his (and someday her) predecessor - he's still responsible for how he deals with those problems.
It's going to take a few years for his policies to have any effect, hopefully in time for him to be reelected.

How did we get to 600? Was it Dr. Gates?
Posted by: mopar at July 22, 2009 5:33 PM
Recessions have little to do with which party is in office, although some measures can make them more or less severe. Interest rates are set independently.
The government as a whole can of course vary tax rates and spending levels but: 1) the president can't do that alone, 2) the states often offset the good work done at the federal level (what happened with the Bush tax cuts) 3) the effects tend to be played out over more than a four year cycle.
Posted by: etson at July 22, 2009 5:35 PM
"Didn't we do over 700 once????"
Yes, that is true.
"Biff will remember. He has a mind full of minutiae."
Yes, that is true.

625
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 22, 2009 5:41 PM
DH, I'm not sure if there's an award for getting to the quarter-century mark; there's probably an entry on the matter in cobblehiller's non-existent, largely unclear, very long PLUSA manual!
Mopar, just saw your post re: Sycamore ivy-covered wall on the Wednesday links thread. Yes, come on down for a visit!
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 22, 2009 5:49 PM
well 625 was the year that the 70th pope took his seat so it's not like DH pulled a random number out of a hat...
Posted by: the chicken at July 22, 2009 5:58 PM
Chicken - excellent use of the wikipedia entry for 625!
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 22, 2009 6:19 PM
Sixyears, I'll let you know when I'll be in your hood. (Not imminently or anything.) Maybe we can meet up.

Let's push this sucker into warp drive.
How many of you folks are actually buying into this idea of national healthcare?
I mean, the plan appears to be this; tell the doctor's they will be getting a 20% paycut and an increased patient load of 47 million. This is going to get is better medical care?
Not.
Posted by: Legion at July 22, 2009 7:39 PM
633! Beautiful! Sorry I wasn't here for the big finish! Congrats Snappy!
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 22, 2009 9:30 PM
The US needs national health care more than anything else. Expecting everyone to self-insure is unworkable and irresponsible.
Posted by: mopar at July 23, 2009 12:05 AM
There's plenty of cash for an american NHS. Just cut the defense budget (the secret one).
Posted by: dittoburg at July 23, 2009 8:18 AM
Damn! Late to the party.

According to the Heritage Foundation:
The 47 million "uninsured" is patently false as based on the US Census figures;
1. 20 million of the "uninsured" are at twice the guidelines for poverty level (40k a year for a family of 4, twice that is 80,000 per year). In other words they can purchase insurance if they wanted it.
2. 9 million of the "uninsured" are already insured under various medicaid plans.
3. 7 million of the "uninsured" are not legal citizens of this nation and are thus under the medical responsibility of another sovereign nation.
4. 3.5 million of the "uninsured" are children who would qualify for the SHIP program if their parents would take the time to enroll them.
That leaves approximately 7 million actual uninsured. the question then becomes, do we restructure our entire healthcare system, 1/5 our economy on a proposed system that has proven to be unsustainable in Mass. already and leaves our standard of care behind what it is today?
