Best Brooklyn Beer Bar?

Posted by: BrooklynGreene at July 17, 2009 9:20 AM

I think, based on large selection as criteria, it might be Draft Bar.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 9:28 AM

okay seriously... what is up with park slope families dressing up like farmers in the summer? im walking to work this morning and im like wtf is there some ho down going on!? gack

Good morning everyone, and most importantly, HAPPY FRIDAY!

Posted by: more4less at July 17, 2009 9:33 AM

Also, BrooklynGreene, we would like full sentences. For example, your post should have read: "What do all you Pathetic Loser Asshats think is the best beer bar in Brooklyn?" Total grammatical correctness and attention to exact spelling is noy as critical as an attempt to construct a full sentence.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 9:33 AM

Dibs - What is an noy?

"my rental"

why do you always say that? ive asked you before and you told me, well it means exactly what it means, but i still dont get it. cant you just say "my apartment" or "my house?" when you say "my rental" it comes across as slightly derogatory to those of us who do not own.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 17, 2009 9:38 AM

Oh, boy! Rob. Class war topic!

Posted by: Arkady at July 17, 2009 9:40 AM

better to say "my rental" than "one of the several properties that I own".

He's got a house, you've got a Nintendo. Who's to say which is the better investment?

ps what do farmers actually wear?

Posted by: the chicken at July 17, 2009 9:41 AM

Rob, I own 2 units. 1 I live in - "my place". 1 is vacant which DH said he's interested in chkg out - "my rental". if people find "my rental" not to the liking, hey not my prob or concern cause that doesnt and shouldnt even make it onto my political correctness radar

Posted by: more4less at July 17, 2009 9:41 AM

okay more4less, that makes perfect sense. i thought when you saying "my rental" i thought you referring to an apartment you lived and rented in.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 17, 2009 9:44 AM

Rob, I think M4L owns a house/apt that he rents and DOESN'T live in. Hence, he refers to it as "My rental".

A ho down in the Slope will entice some people take out their pitchforks.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at July 17, 2009 9:44 AM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 9:45 AM

Does anyone here watch HouseHunters on HGTV? The episode that aired last night...the guy that bought the plain white box condo in Sarasota...that renovation he did was true real estate porn at it's best. He used petrified teak bowl sinks in the master bath...and that kitchen and those wood floors, good heavens!

I think the Slope has had hos for years and whether or not it has been gentrified, there's still a need for the world's oldest profession.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 9:47 AM

DIBS, you rent yours out like M4L does? I think we have a HO DOWN! :o)

It's a TARP!!!!

Posted by: the chicken at July 17, 2009 9:47 AM

Rob, let me switch to a topic/situation you've probably encountered. Today on the 4 train, this girl sat across from me and her "sloppy" boob (the right one) were on the verge of falling completely out of her push up bra. She wasn't some hot young girl but during the whole ride, a bunch of us on the train were probably thinking "a little bump or swerve and out it comes (so we can laugh)". She was oblivious to that and seem pretty angry thinking about something

Posted by: more4less at July 17, 2009 9:52 AM

Snappy - you know I watch HouseHunters HGTV, but I missed that episode - that show is ridic. I like property virgins more now with the lady from Canada as the "realtor"
Oh wait - and I LOVEEEE "Bang for your Buck"

Morning Everyone -so did anyone read the NY Daily news article yesterday about that monster teen who killed the kitten. I think she ONLY got 1 year in jail.
No doubt she will be out and will harm another being soon enough and am sure the judge in that case will wish she had stuck her in jail for longer. the unfortunate thing is she's probably a sociopath who should be on meds and in some sorta hospital

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 10:06 AM

is that right Rob? I wonder how they would go about proving it?

Posted by: the chicken at July 17, 2009 10:06 AM

No real interest in Citi's earnings. As long as they weren't dramatically better or dramatically worse, there'd be no overall effect on the market, unlike the GS numbers.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 10:07 AM

M4L, the standards of decency in dress have deteriorated so much, I find myself sucking my teeth in disgust like my grandmother. This summer is the worst. I've seen some sights that have been burned into my memory. At this rate, I expect everyone to be starkers next summer. There's not much left not to show, from both sexes. That will not be pretty.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 17, 2009 10:07 AM

is anyone else offended by the "meter maid" post? meter maid is actually a very derogatory term.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 17, 2009 10:08 AM

so is "yellow cab" but it's all about the context, rob

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 10:09 AM

Speaking as this site's resident cyber-gentleman-farmer, I can assure rob:

1. I'm wearing business casual attire and am fully compliant with my office's dress code (except I've rolled up my sleeves). No hayseed here.

2. I think you meant a hoe-down. That silent "e" seems to be pivotal to the meaning.

3. Seriously, you're seeing a lot of dungarees, John Deere hats and heavy duty work boots in the slope on a 90 degree day? On the kids, too? Or do you have some other notion of what farmers look like?

Posted by: slopefarm at July 17, 2009 10:09 AM

Morning asshats! I read last nights OT conversation and I'm so mad I missed it. Gemology is my passion.

Chicken- Rhodium canisters, Christ. My jaw hit the desk when I saw that. Mostly they use it to plate white gold. It's so much whiter than white gold (which is very yellow in comparison to platinum or rhodium). That it sets off diamonds perfectly. So if you have a white gold ring that's turned yellowish take it to be re-plated.

Snappy- Tanzanite is my all time favorite gem. My engagement ring is a deep blue Tanzanite.

Bxgrl- Alexandrite? You must be a June baby. I saved for forever to get one. Then after wearing it about 2 months smacked my hand down on a table and now have a huge crack smack down the center of my it. I died a little that day.

Snappy- thanks for being my kitty pimp! I have the momma scheduled for her 'procedure' on Thursday next week. The kittens are going to have to wait a bit seems it's pretty crowded at the low cost place and appointments are scarce. Momma got in because I have a feeling she may actually be preggers again. She's a freeking factory!

gemini...our new offices are on 55th bet Madison & park. I need to talk to you about cheap lunch sandwich places near there. Although I used to live at 54th & lex, not sure what's around there anymore near Madison. I know there's a deli on the NW cor of madison & 54

Thanks

Anyone else think it's time to change up the pics on the American Apparel ad?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 10:54 AM

Chicken, I'm not religious but if I were that would be my alter. It's funny, I've seen everything there a million times but it still excites me. I'm a total dork when it comes to rocks.

Since we got the house whenever my mom and dad come by they bring me more of my childhood stuff that they've been holding on to. So this last trip she brings old timey tupperware box that was the kind that you carried cupcakes in to parties. So it has 12 individual molded cups. Don't you know I had filled them up with rocks from the beach and garden that I'd wrapped in tissues and taped with Scotch tape (because you don't want a garden rock to get scratched!). I was pretty amazed at my little kindergarten collection of stones, good stuff!

My husband laughed because his initial assumption when he met me was I was just a jewelry girl. Nope. Now he has proof that my little obsession started very early on.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 10:55 AM

Dibs
tough - not to cheap around here, many people at my job go to Cafe Europa which is very good it's on 55th and madison - next to the Sony bldg. There's also Burger Heaven on Madison btwn 55th and 54th

Good Sandwiches can be found at City Market right next to the Duane Reade on 55th closer to Madison
There's always Cosi on 56th btwn park and madison and Dishes on Park at 53rd

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 10:55 AM

I have City Market by me no 23rd and 5th and their sandwiches and wraps are always good and pretty reasonably priced. Not sure about the one on Madison.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 17, 2009 10:59 AM

gemini...I need to find the nearest morning donut guy on the sidewalk as well!!!! There is a deli on 55th just west of Lex that was always good and cheap.

What's always difficult to find is a deli that has a real roast of roast beef that's freshly cooked and really rare; not that dry brown Boar's Head crap!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 11:00 AM

"DH: Aren't you done yet? How many mice infested your apt!!"

Sorta - I have isolated where they are coming in. The basement room has a closet with the mechanicals. I tried to plug it up as best as possible, but the pest control specialist is coming on Monday. :-\

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 11:02 AM

I like City Market up here b/c you can request your sandwich to be made and you can pick all sorts of interesting bits like sliced avocado or red pepper or sprouts

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 11:02 AM

I will be a lot closer to the Goodburger on 54th and Lex, my old condo building

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 11:02 AM

Dibs - haha hard to find that sorta deli - but I know what you mean!
ummm - well I ALWAYS go to the corner coffee guys. The one I go to is Greek and he always has fresh donuts, bagels, pastries and solid corner coffee - he's on the 55th street corner and 5th avenue. the 55th and Madison corner is an Arab woman who has good coffe but not as good of a variety of donuts/bagels etc as the guy I normally go to.

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 11:06 AM

gemini...there's no high end grocery around there either is there???? Here at the old offices I had the Amish Market of 45th bet 2 & 3 and the markets in Grand central terminal.

Is the closest one that Gourmet Market on Sixth Ave around 57th St????

THL- I would put that teenager in a permanent psychiatric facility- she'll be a serial killer in no time. I shouldn't have read the article today. I'm all upset again.

I'd love to see pics of your house, and hear the story of how you settled in Bed Stuy. I'll provide MR. B with a pic next week. This is on MacDonough bet Stuyvesant & Lewis

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 11:57 AM

Sorrry, it's on Macon St, not macDonough.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 12:00 PM

Bxgrl and DH-

You're never going to believe it but it's absolutely true.

I went out to feed them yesterday evening and the Momma had 'gifted' us with a squirrel. She and her babies were laying down next to it and jumped up meowing and doing the proud happy dance when I opened the door. I waited until my husband came home from work to 'accept' the 'gift' on behalf of the household. I contended he is the head of the household so I explained to him it would have been wrong for me to accept it right?

She was so proud!

Poor squirrel. She's teaching her young well. Thing is, she didn't eat it. I feed her too well. This killing was for sport.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 12:02 PM

my son loves to feed the squirrels so guess he can never like cats (on top of fact wife is super allergic to them)

Posted by: more4less at July 17, 2009 12:06 PM

Wow THL - your cat is straight up gangsta!

Unfortunately my new roommate is allergic to cats. I broached the subject with her last night and she was dead set against it.

I need my own place.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 12:06 PM

DH- meet M4L. M4l- meet DH :-)

We have a giant squirrel in the backyard who loves to tease the outback crew. He lost his tail once but still runs around the yard. Actually, most times the cats don't even pay attention to him- which seems to piss him off no end. (and that was so thoughful of you THL. After all, it was only too respectful of you to let your husband have the man honors).

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 12:14 PM

DH- Oh well, I do appreciate your having tried.

Yeah, the street kitties are straight up gansta. The 3 kittens of hers that we took in from her first (that I knew about) litter if they find a bug in the house not only do they kill it they eat them. They'll fight over it too.

The other 2 cats we have just meow until we come over and handle the situation. They are pampered, indoors their whole life, kitties. I swear they're saying ewwww...mom...get his disgusting crawling thing!! It touched my paw grosssss!! Now I'm going to have to bathe myself for several hours! I skeeve!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 12:15 PM

I'm respectful of him that way!

I'd even let him sit at the head of the dining room table, if it wasn't round!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 12:17 PM

THL- you'd love Sard, Lord of Doom. He's all black, completely blind and he catches flies between his two front paws. The problem is he can't figure out how to get his paws close to his mouth to eat the yucky thing so he pushes himself across the floor, his front legs stretched out in front, butt in the air, trying to catch up to his own paws. *sigh*

Had a thought- maybe a special, gilded chair for the HoTH? After all, if King Arthur could do it....

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 12:22 PM

Dave, Bxgrl and I noticed that building the other day, too. Gawd! I checked the SH designation map, and only the corner buildings on the one side of Macon where it intersects Lewis are landmarked, so they probably are able to do whatever they want.

Saraghina was great. Rates with the best pizza I've ever had. We ate in the garden, and it was a lot of fun. Pretty crowded with all kinds of people, too. This was around 7:45 pm. Can't wait to go back. Hope to join you guys on Sunday.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 17, 2009 12:26 PM

Oh Bxgrl!!! I'm stuck between amazement that he catches the flies while being completely blind and laughter at the image of him sliding tush up arms out in prayer position!

"Had a thought- maybe a special, gilded chair for the HoTH? After all, if King Arthur could do it...."

And break up the aesthetic? Ha! Maybe I'll just get him a trucker hat that says "Squirrel Coroner" on it.

I'm kinda busy at work. Who's the DTM (Designated Thread Monitor) today? Anything interesting happening elsewhere? Anything Awaye Realty-esque?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 12:41 PM

thanks for the tip CGer. wasn't there a smith & hawken in SoHo? it's really too bad they're closing, I loved that place but mostly couldn't really afford it for myself (hello Lowes). Just shopped there for gifts, etc. Speaking of gardening, my hollyhocks are 8 feet tall!! It has been a very exciting summer in the garden. Do you have one?

Posted by: herkimermaid at July 17, 2009 12:42 PM

Yes, got an email from Smith & hawken on Wednesday sating that the website was no longer and inventory would be liquidated through the stores.

Crabtree & Evelyn bankrupt as well

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 12:48 PM

Try the French Toast at Saraghina. You can still get the pizza's as well during brunch. Montrose, isn't the garden great?! I can't wait until they open the counter area at the back. Owner said they will sell food-to-go in the AM. And I want to steal that tractor in the garden, unless slopefarm gets it first or Rob destroys it to keep the farmers at bay.

The people who are putting up the extension also own the empty lot that fronts on Halsey. Haven't seen the work lately as I am getting home when it is dark. What is wrong with the extension?

Posted by: Miss Chiff at July 17, 2009 12:50 PM

herkimer, the SoHo store closed some time in 2008. I picked up some great things for the garden over the years. I'm going to try and get there this weekend. I read elsewhere that they decided to close because they were unable to find a buyer for the chain.

Dibs - sorry to not have replied. The gourmet grocer you are thinking about is "Ernest & Klein" on 6th avenue btwn 55tth & 56th street

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 12:59 PM

Ok, so nobody volunteered to be DTM and I had to go do it myself. I noticed heck_of_a_job_brownie added this to the Awaye thread:

"So I did some digging and was able to find the original Awaye photos (still on the server). They seem to be very
poor copies of the originals:

It is quite a slow news day, Biff. I'm psyched because I just found out we're outta here at 2pm every Friday for the rest of the summer!

Dibs: went to E&K once to get some chicken on my home on the F train - however, I did look around and it seems they defintely have a good selection of produce, coffee beans, chocolates and pastries. no meat/fish counter I can remember
Am trying to think of other gourmet type places...
maybe more on the east side
Why do you want to hit up grocers though at work?

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 1:17 PM

gemini...for food, especially fresh meat & fish :( on the way home from work since there's nothing really close to me in Bed Stuy that offers anything great.

Thanks

Hiya Snappy!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 1:33 PM

Oops- that reminded me. THL- alexandrite chips easily. I have my mother's ring (for years we thought it was just a particularly beautiful amethyst until we took it to a jeweler.) It's a huge stone, but someone told me to have it reground to get rid of the chips on the facets. Too scared to do that.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 1:34 PM

Hola, THL, my sister Tanzanite lover! I actually know people who hate tanzanite. I truly don't understand why...I think it's the most gorgeous stone out there. I had a tanzanite bracelet, but lost it :( Oh, the crying and wailing I did that day!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 17, 2009 1:35 PM

"And I want to steal that tractor in the garden, unless slopefarm gets it first or Rob destroys it to keep the farmers at bay."

I'm not a real farmer. I just play one on the interwebs. It's as real as the realtor's claim that my house was a farmhouse. (Not to worry, no premium was paid on that selling point.)

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 17, 2009 1:51 PM

gemini....now I take the A to the 4/5 which is an awful transfer down at Broadway/Nassau/Fulton.

When we move I'll take the A and just walk across the platform to the E and then get off at 53rd & Fifth Ave.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 1:51 PM

It's purple? Wow. That's amazing. You can ONLY find those on the secondary market these days. None of that coming out of the earth anymore. Now, everything is light green with very little color change. Which makes quality Alexandrite is one of the rarest and most expensive stones out there.

Didi you mom wear it as an everyday ring? I ask because it's a chrysoberyl which is a pretty hard stone 8.5 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are 10, Tanzanite 6.5). Honestly must have struck mine 'just so' to split it.

Unless youi want to sell it, which I'm assuming you don't enjoy the stone as is. If you ever want to have it re-cut I'd say just make sure you do extensive research on who the best Alex cutters are. Not every cutter is experience with all stones.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 1:54 PM

yeah, it's just a tough part of town to have a good grocery store as it's not really residential. Am really trying to think of a good place
well you could walk over to the F train on 56th and 6th and hit up Ernest & Klein and then take the F to Jay Street and hop on the A...

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 1:57 PM

DIBS, I assume the movers are Caucasian? Otherwise, I'm sure you would have provided much more information regarding their appearance.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 1:59 PM

I think people who don't like Tanzanite don't because they only know the cheap stuff which looks like a sickly lavender color. It's should be a vivid almost cobalt blue with flashes or red. Look at the difference in these two-

There is a secretary at our new offices that ditto would be quite interested in!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 2:04 PM

I'll never sell it- my mother's twin bought it for her so there is a double connection. I'm still amazed yours cracked. Must have had a hidden flaw somewhere. I think my aunt must have bought the ring- I seem to recall Israel?- in the 60's or maybe earlier. My aunt did a lot of work with relocating the remains of the Europeon Jews after WW II so I don't really know.

Snappy - my sister has an antique silver, marcasite and tanzanite ring I would cut her finger off for :-). I'm trying the begging and kissing up route. If that doesn't work I'll just have to get more aggressive.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 2:08 PM

Posted by: gemini10 at July 17, 2009 2:14 PM

That makes sense since it's primary source is Russia.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 17, 2009 2:14 PM

Ok- I am going to hang my head in humiliation and shame- I am totally confused because a jeweler said the ring was alexandrite but looking at the tanzanite info I think it must be tanzanite. It is an intense purple with blue flashes and it is big. At least 5 carats. THL- could it still be alexandrite?

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 2:16 PM

There is definitely a marked difference between those two, THL.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 2:17 PM

The other old ring my sister has in chalcedony- a very unusual soft blueish-lilacy color. I'm willing to chop a finer for that one too :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 2:19 PM

Well the Chinese bf is 39...that's about the limit. All depends on what they look like. You understand these things, Biff. LOL

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 2:19 PM

It could still definitely be. Does it change color in different light? Say sunlight to incandescent? That's the biggest indicator.

I saw him on the street about a year ago and he was actually better looking than on TV.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 2:33 PM

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 2:58 PM

Speaking of age, I feel I'm way to old for this but I got what I thought was a zit on my face. I made the horrible mistake of trying to squeeze it and now it looks like a mole that would make Rod Stewart blush. Damn, it's one of those things that's going to be around for weeks.

Is there any OTC cream I can put on it to speed up its demise? I just read via a Google search that Neosporin works.

Anyone in the makeup industry?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 3:05 PM

biff, think till you cleared 40, you aint too old for zits

Posted by: more4less at July 17, 2009 3:09 PM

M4L, isn't this how life always works?

So I clear 40 and have had a family for awhile and, when I really don't care at all about my appearance, I suddenly no longer get zits!

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 3:14 PM

Actually, I think you can get them pretty much at nearly any age if you have really oily skin. I've seen older people with them too. But biff- wasn't it nice of M4L to think you're younger than 40 :-)?

Posted by: bxgrl at July 17, 2009 3:14 PM

Eeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 17, 2009 3:16 PM

Biff, it doesn't work instantly, but the Neutrogena "On the Spot" cream works pretty well. Also, any Vit. C based cream that Mrs. C might have around might help it heal faster than without.

Now, don't do that again!! Use the "On the Spot" cream BEFORE it gets big enough that you would feel the urge to mess with it!

Don't ask me how I know all this! ; )

I don't think you make Brownstoner a bad place. I like having your view of things in the mix. You have some very valid points in what you say. There are elements of postings and conversations that happen here that need your point of view.

The only issue that seems to come up time and time again is some of the harsher verbiage that you use. I don't love it, but I'm used to it and filter as needed when I read your posts.

Cobble, that was funny. I think I could cut and paste her top 5, change one or two songs, and make it my worst 5 of all-time. I might sub in Too Shy by Kajagoogoo or We Built This City by Starship for Spandau Ballet and whalla, there it is.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 4:09 PM

Ok there are some things I can let walk.

" You just can't stand it that brownstoner didn't fall apart without you."

No Brownstoner does not need "The What" Bxgrl. Jon will do fine without me.

" I can do without the name calling and insults and shrieking you're known for."

This illustrates my point. I was not thinking about you when I wrote this. So why you feel offended?

"Or at least learn how to make your sometimes valid points like a civilized human being instead of a petulant 4 year old."

Ok Bxgrl no problem, have a wonderful weekend. Before you go Bxgrl, remember I asked you to compile 10 positive stories about African Americans this year on Brownstoner? I wonder if you did any research and If you did please post the results and prove me wrong, thank you and be well...

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: Return of The What at July 17, 2009 4:18 PM

What, show us a Brownstoner thread that was negatively directed at or characterizing African Americans.

"No Brownstoner does not need "The What" Bxgrl. Jon will do fine without me."

Jon will do fine, What, but the place really isn't the same without you. While I consider some of your cyber combatants friends, it doesn't mean I can't personally try to be civil with everyone, and you and I have shown that. You've brought a much different perspective to the table for me here (and I assume for some others too). You've made me think about certain topics in a different way and I think I've benefitted a lot from that.

Have a great weekend and thanks again for the beauty advice.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 4:27 PM

And you be well, What. But you know my backstory well enough to know I don't have to take quizzes or to prove anything - you and i will never agree about brownstoner.

I'm sure you weren't thinking about me at all, but I have been on the receiving end of some of your posts. I really don't dislike you and I respect where you're coming from most of the time. Its how you say things- but the fact that so many people do want you to stay is an indication of how much people do think you have a lot to offer here.Even those of us you hate.

Have a good weekend too-

Anywho - how bout that local sports team?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 4:33 PM

Does it seem like it be raining around 5pm? I was really looking forward to cycling home today.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 4:38 PM

It was sprinkling here a bit a few minutes ago Biff, if you ride, I'd go real fast!

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 17, 2009 4:42 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 4:46 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 4:48 PM

What, if it hadn't been for that NYMag article about you, it's not likely I would have found out about this blog, which is how I met my significant other. So I gotta say thanks, and enjoy your fishing trip (or wherever you're going...)!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 17, 2009 4:50 PM

Not so much DH. It seems nice to me, but I haven't spent time over there regularly in awhile.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 17, 2009 4:54 PM

Gotcha CHiller

of course the ad says "Park slope" but isn't that windsor terrace?

sure - it's a block, but how can it be park slope if there's no park!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 17, 2009 4:58 PM

Thanks Cobble, but it actually looks now like it's lightening up a bit in Manhattan. Maybe if I wait a bit I'll be fine. I don't want to go fast; I want to go for a bit of a spin.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 5:04 PM

As we know....Those terms are used loosely! It's Windsor Terrace to me, but I think Smith Street is Boerum Hill too!

There are a lot of restaurants and it's an easy walk to the Park - two blocks?, which is great. The movie theater is there at Bartel-Pritchard Square - which is 15th St? [Going from memory]. A friend had a humungous 2 bedroom apt. over there for a time. Depends on what your friend wants. PPW over there has some shopping. It used to be working class Irish years ago. I imagine it's more yuppie/families now.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 17, 2009 5:05 PM

Biff, they're now saying on NPR that the rain won't hit until late this evening.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 17, 2009 5:07 PM

Perfect, I'm going to slide down the dinosaur and hop on the Biffmobile very soon.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 17, 2009 5:10 PM

Chicken--don't know if you are reading OT this late, but if yes, I'll check this thread over the weekend. You may have the experience to answer this: my brother and spouse are planning a move to France and going for an exploratory trip in 2 weeks. They are thinking Montpelier, because it is in the "middle" of the south so maybe not as expensive as Provence. Do you know anything about where to move in France? Once you posted a French chateaux real estate site. I emailed it to them (:-)- knowing they cannot afford a chateau, but they liked the site. Then later brother says *maybe* Aix-en-Provence, where he has lived before, but it is more crowded now and those pollution towers 25 miles(?) from Aix. I don't think they can afford Aix anyway. Any ideas about a city? Then of course when one chooses a city, one has to find the neighborhood, the block, etc. Oh, vey! Both are fluent.

Posted by: BklynSoFar at July 17, 2009 6:04 PM

Had a nap but still jetlagged so I popped in to check out the updates.

I've only been to France a handful of times, mainly for business so mostly in Paris, so I am far from the best person to ask about it. I posted the chateaux website simply because they are so "reasonably" priced.

Provence is a very popular place for brits to "summer" so the property prices there are relatively high. My french is about the level of a 2 year old but the I have never encountered the stereotype of them disliking people speaking english - might be different if you are actually living there. Since they are fluent then they won't have this issue - and will probably endear them to the locals anywhere there.

One general thing I noticed about France is that the roads are much less congested than UK or US so it's definitely possible to live further away from a city if you have to commute. A friend of mine drives 60km each way to work every day (although he does get his petrol paid for by his employers).

Best of luck to your brother and his wife - it's a big move and I'm sure they are very excited!

Chicken, thank you so much. And you know what, the 2-year-olds over there speak very good French so you are doing great!

I have another question about currency but will ask you later because I am so tired now :-). Thanks for your time.

Well, it is actually like this: if we use our debit cards there, say something costs 25 euros. Then would we maybe find something like 100 taken out of our account when we get home -- as in they took our value to theirs? I don't think I am saying that exactly correct. My friend from Sweden assures me that would happen this year, even though she is abroad right now. She said to not use the debit cards now for that reason.

Posted by: BklynSoFar at July 17, 2009 10:19 PM

What,

A belated welcome back from me. While I think I disagree with your perspective on this site, I appreciate the way you expressed it today. Whether you hang out here or not, I wish you well. If you do engage here, I will try to keep it civil and i hope you will, too. I respect that, for you, some of the issues you raise run deep, whether I can make sense of how you get to your views or not. But for your own sake, I hope you will walk away and take a breather if it starts making you feel crazy. It's just a log.

Peace.

I mean blog.

BklynSoFar,
maybe I should have said a one-year-old then!

not sure if I have understood your currency question. Are you worried that you buy something on your debit card for eur25 (about $35) and when you get home, you see a $100 charge on your statement?

If so, you shouldn't - the clearing system should give you pretty close to the spot rate (definitely much closer than a currency exchange shop). Of course, the spot rates might change a little while you are there but certainly shouldn't vary to that degree.

If you are worried about it, save all of your debit card receipts and tick them off your statement when you get back. Divide the statement amount in dollars by the debit card receipt amount in euros - and you should get close to the spot rate (currently 1.42). Any differences and you can query it with your bank.

If this still worries you (or you would rather set yourself a spending budget) then take the money in cash from an ATM. Decide what your budget is and divide by the spot rate and that is how many euros you need to get out. Note that your bank will have a preset daily limit to how much cash you can take out so you may need to spread this over several days.
Again, keep the receipts of money withdrawn and then compare to your statement when you get back.

Hope this was what you were asking?
