can it be possible that I'm first today on the OT?

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:17 AM

Hai la!

Riding the Chinatown bus to DC today....

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:19 AM

Are you on Hong Kong time???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:19 AM

Yes, for what it's worth, on this dumber-than-dumb non-topic thread, you, yes, are the first today. Congratulations.

Posted by: BrooklynGreene at July 14, 2009 9:20 AM

Are there any live chickens aboard???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:20 AM

WonTon, most people purposely do NOT want to be post #1 - only a loser like BIFF does that all the time

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:20 AM

Dave, I bring my own chicken on the bus...always be prepared.

m4l, well I guess I am a loser, then. It's so hard to understand the etiquette of a foreign land.

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:22 AM

Just me and the Chinese guys here. Hmmmmmmm.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:22 AM

WonTon, you grew up here right?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:23 AM

Damn, I missed being the first poster. My day is RUINED!

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:23 AM

And anonymous lurkers.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:23 AM

Well, given the participation at the Friends of brownstoner gatherings, we could use a little more ethnic diversity lest we be accused of race/class warfae again.

So Won Ton, it seems that you fit right in as a PLUSA.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:24 AM

Arkady, have you got your TV to work yet?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:25 AM

Good morning everyone,

So yesterday I decided to go to Una Pizza Napoletana to try it out before it closed and guess what? It's CLOSED!!!! I had to settle for the second choice on my list, Luzzo's, which is good and conveniently located right around the corner for the former Una Pizza. It was delish (even though not the best that I had in my opinion).

I turn around while munching on my slice and guess who is sitting right next booth to me……. Michael Kors. He was with 3 other guys and one looked familiar (I think he was one of the guys from Project Runway).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 9:26 AM

Born in HK. Came here in junior high school. So I can read Chinese, but my writing is no good.

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:27 AM

Speaking of the bus to DC, if you book two weeks in advance, there are some incredible prices on Amtrak now. A friend just booked Philly to Stamford for $36.

Also, always check a smaller city BEYOND your destination. Less travelled destinations are cheaper. For example, Philly to NYC is usually $64-108 but if you book Philly to Stamford, its always cheaper. Just get off in NYC instead.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:27 AM

m4L - No. I haven't played w/ it yet. Have decided which antenna to get but am now looking at splitters & how to wire to the 4 t.v.s I'd like to hook up. No big rush until new season starts - I hate reruns.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:28 AM

hahahah kens that's so funny!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 14, 2009 9:28 AM

Who is Michael Kors???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:28 AM

Dibs - You can also do NJT to Philly. I do unless a client is paying.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:30 AM

I know who MK is but how on earth did you recognize him!?

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:31 AM

Ha, Dave, the Chinatown bus to DC is only $16. Now that Goldman Sachs has sucked us all dry, it's nice to know there are still some bargains left in the world.

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:33 AM

The chances of me recognizing Michael Kors are about the same as the chances of DIBS and The What playing a round of golf together at Shinnecock.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:33 AM

Yeah, Arkady, but that takes forever. I've never done it but I know people who have.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:33 AM

"the Chinatown bus to DC is only $16."

Yes, but isn't it $50 if the bus actually makes it there in one piece?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:34 AM

WonTon, don't be a GS hater. You could have profited nicely from owning GS when it was below $100, and below book value!!!!!!

All this hate out there against GS. This is still a capitalist country, they have paid back TARP money (which they didn't need) so life goes on. They shoild pay themselves whatever their shareholders are comfortable with. They are not sucking from either the consumer or the government.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:36 AM

WonTon, coming here at junior high age is right at the border as far as "did you grow up here". Take a good seat on that DC bus cause you know they carry little to no insurance for injuries, etc.

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:36 AM

Is there a "tea lady" on the bus??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:37 AM

Biff, when you ride Fung Wah, you fly on the eastern wind....

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:37 AM

"Biff, when you ride Fung Wah, you fly on the eastern wind...."

WonTon, and whenever I eat at Jing Fong, I pass the eastern wind!

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:40 AM

Stern wind.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:41 AM

Arkady, 4 TV's?!! was about to convince you to get a flat panel TV and TV antenna for you laptop so you can watch TV via laptop connected to the TV. but not good suggestion when you're looking to enable 4 analog TV's

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:43 AM

"Stern wind."

Reminds me of an old Rodney joke:

The other day I was mowing my lawn without a shirt on and I got a still back. My wife told me that I should try mowing the lawn next time without my pants on.

He also said, "at my age, I'm envious of a stiff wind".

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:44 AM

Biff, speaking of winds, can you play mahjong???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 9:45 AM

Meant, "got a STIFF back".

Btw, does anyone know of a fun place for a family from out of town on a budget to have dinner in the Times Square area (and please don't suggest Olive Garden or Red Lobster). I thought of Carmine's, but that's usually packed before the shows.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:45 AM

Biff, you're a westerner so yours would be a western wind

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:45 AM

Biff, take my advice, and give a pass to Jing Fung!

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:45 AM

m4l - Kitchen, living room, bedroom, guest room. Oldest set is 36 (really good video monitor), youngest is 15. I mainly watch the one in the kitchen - the most challenging to wire to roof-top antenna, of course.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:46 AM

"Biff, speaking of winds, can you play mahjong???"

No, but I used to travel a lot with a Chinese colleague / friend of mine and he and another Chinese colleague taught me how to play Choh Dai Di. It was a lot of fun, especially since there was usually drinking involved.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:48 AM

More4less, are you Hong Kong, Taiwan or mainland?

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 9:48 AM

Rene Pujol's was good but I think they've closed. There are a couple of fairly reasonable places along restaurant row - a bit west but worth the walk.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 9:49 AM

Thanks Arkady. Years ago I went to a Cajun restaurant around there that was pretty decent, but I don't recall the name. I'm thinking of something that would give them a fun New York experience. Maybe I should just send them to Carnegie Deli; the must-do stop for all tourists.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 9:52 AM

WonTon, mainland. came here very young so I definitively grew up here

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 9:53 AM

Kensingtonian, LOVE the sighting. Very nice.
Last weekend, I nearly swooned when hubby told me he had just run into Tim Gunn on 5th around 20th. I asked what he was wearing. Seersucker jacket with jeans and loafers. Dying. DYING. I almost sprinted to the spot.

MAKE IT WORK, people. Sigh.

Return of The Chicken...

Posted by: the chicken at July 14, 2009 10:00 AM

Chicken, you back in UK?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 10:04 AM

Noki, your hubby not only recognized Tim Gunn (who?) but recalled exactly what he was wearing from head to toe?? Now THAT is metrosexuality at it's finest.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 10:07 AM

Biff, even a stiff like me would remember what Tim Gunn is wearing if I did see him. He's a fashion guy so one encounters him, one would be checking out what he's wearing

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 10:12 AM

yep - landed first thing this morning on the red-eye. Thought I had the jetlag licked already this morning and then fell asleep on my keyboard for 20 minutes.

Posted by: the chicken at July 14, 2009 10:12 AM

I saw that flaming Carson guy from Queer Eye in Provincetown two years ago. He really looked like he could use a makeover.

Of that whole crew, only the food guy, Ted, seems to have succeeded beyond Queer Eye.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 10:15 AM

M4L, I'm really bad when it comes to fashion (as I'm sure you realized when you met me). I despise shopping - I went to Century 21 yesterday to pick up some undershirts and couldn't wait to get out of there. That is why my wardrobe is so horribly out of date. Mrs. C is embarrassed when I go out, even if she's not with me, as she thinks my bad taste reflects poorly on her; like people will wonder how she could let her hubby leave the house looking so ridiculous.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 10:17 AM

I never, ever notice what other guys are wearing. It must be a burden to be a famous fashion designer and have to make yourself look cutting edge every time you're out in public.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 10:19 AM

Biff, your attire looks pretty good last time. I can't comment on people's attire when I'm rocking the "old engineer" look to work everyday (Benson will know exactly what I mean)

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 10:24 AM

Biff - How about John's Pizza - there's always a long line, but it goes fast. Or Hard Rock, which has good sandwiches.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 14, 2009 10:25 AM

Biff, hubby would be so embarrassed. Truth is, he has been the unfortunate (in his estimation) repository of many a late night DVR-ed episode of Project Runway and (even worse) Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, when Veronica Webb was sidekick. I confess to adoring PR and all things Tim Gunn.

Posted by: Nokilissa at July 14, 2009 10:26 AM

I've only seen PR a few times. It was good for the funny gay drama.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 10:30 AM

Un Pizza Napoletana - I liked it, but (excuse if I sound ignorant here) the pizza tasted almost exactly the same as the pizza at Franny's on Flatbush (and both are EXPENSIVE.) I think UPN is only open Thurs. thru Sat. or something like that (usual arbitrary silliness intended to give food writers a hard-on.)

Posted by: Art Salt at July 14, 2009 10:34 AM

Thanks CarrollGardened. I'll mention those too. The pizza in Toronto, where they're visiting from is awful, so they should definitely try some in New York. I love Lombardi's, but it might be inconvenient from where they are. John's is definitely more convenient and decent.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 10:37 AM

I only recognized him cause he was on Project Runway guest appearance a couple of times plus my friend is in fashion and she pointed him out cause I wasn't facing him and she was. He is nothing special by any means.

DIBS, you're gay and you don't know who Michael Kors is? He was surrounded by 3 fairly good looking early 30ish guys BUT none of them were of Latin or Asian decent, sorry to disappoint you.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 10:37 AM

Luzzo's was expensive as well. 12' pies were anywhere from 17-24 bucks! a little ridiculous in my opinion and I personally like Grimaldi's better. I know I will get bashed for that comment but that's just my opinion. I have to try saraghina sometime. Maybe I'll tag along there with M4L and DH for lunch this weekend if I am free and am invited (hint, hint).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 10:41 AM

"DIBS, you're gay and you don't know who Michael Kors is? "

I find this sentence to be offensive. Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I should know every flaming "F word" in the world.

I'm going to go on a three day tirade about this, make a complete ass out of myself and have everyone disagree with me.

Someday this bigotry is going to end....

:)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 10:42 AM

I can send emails to wasder, Mr. B, Amzi and others who aren't always in the OT just to see if they're interested, if you want.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 10:46 AM

m4l, dh & Kens...were you thinking Sat or Sun for Saraghina lunch?? I'm not around on Saturday because I have to head into Manhattan for awhile because we are moving offices...but Sunday works.

Otherwise have fun if I miss you guys. There's a bodega across the street if you want beer.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 10:46 AM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 14, 2009 10:52 AM

Kens, I'm not sure whether or not that Beer Garden is open.

Even I've heard of MK. DIBS not know who Michael Kors is equates to Rob not know who Billy Dee Williams is.

"I did it both places - just wanted to get you back there."

That's what she said.

(sorry Arkady, I never thought I would do that to one of your lines, but how can one resist such an easy setup?)

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 10:53 AM

Sounds like it may just be the transformer afterall. Anyone else want to comment on Arkady's bells???

Get one of those school fire alarm sized bells like Jamie Gumb had in Silence of the Lambs.

Chicken, That's Goo to you.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 11:01 AM

Besides, as long as Michael Kors isn't infringing on my pool of the Asians & Latins and sticks to the potatoes, he and I are not likely to meet and get into a hissy fit, bich-slapping, hair pulling contest; which seems to be what Kens pointed out to me.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 11:05 AM

Was The What banned again? I haven't seen him around in the last day or so. Come to think of it, I haven't seen Cobblehiller for a while either (not suggesting the two disappearances are related).

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 11:05 AM

OK, I can't find anywhere online that they are open already because as of July 7th, they weren't. Also, they have no phone number yet so no way to confirm.

How about this place?

http://www.gowanuslounge.com/2008/11/13/brooklyn-nibblesdrinkables-draft-barn-now-open/

Problem is that it's kind of in No Man's Land and a bit of a shlep to the subway. Biff and Dave, opinions? Suggestions?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 11:07 AM

Biff, I saw the two of them sitting next to each other in a banquette booth at La Grenouille last night. They had arms entwined sipping Dom Perignon.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 11:08 AM

Kens, are you beginning to appreciate the work involved in planning these Brownstoner gatherings? :-)

I would vote for a short schlep to a subway. Speaking of short schleps, has anyone seen the new Woody Allan movie? I've heard mixed reviews. I love both Woody and Larry David, so I think I would like it.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 11:11 AM

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 11:13 AM

Yes, agree with Biff on a relatively short subway schlep.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 11:14 AM

is dave a pot head?

Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 14, 2009 11:14 AM

I think cobble is still working for her friend? And please! let's not pick on poor What or we'll have to endure another episode of bad psychoanalytical treacle from BklynSoFar. Gack.

Dave, DH, M4L- is Sunday an all boys lunch? MM and I have been trying to get to seraghina's for a couple of weeeks now with Amzi.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2009 11:14 AM

Oh come on bxgrl, BklynSoFar has a good heart. As for the lunch, I think anytime you can offer to bring Amzi to the table, DIBS will make sure you're invited.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 11:18 AM

"is dave a pot head?"

I think Dave is less into pot and more into pan...Pan Asian, that is.

re: pizza above

someone mentioned John's on Bleecker which has always been my fav - but I haven't been in over a year.

OK it's official....The next impromptu get together will be at DRAFT BARN at 6:30. (I should be there a little earlier). They have an extensive beer selection (at least 200). You can read a little about the place at the link below.

http://www.chow.com/places/41352

I am sure we'll stick around to at least 9ish and the place is big so feel free to drop by at whatever time you can. They do have a menu and the food is reasonably priced.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 11:23 AM

Hey Brownstoner. You looked good at the Chelsea Art Museum last night. Very humble receipt of your award.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 11:26 AM

Hey all. sounds like there have been a lot of meets since Rope. How many have I missed? Still not really walking post-surgery. I thought I would be more nimble on my crutches. Anyone have any tips on navigating brownstone steps with crutches? I fell down them twice already so I've taken to just staying in my home. I'm going to be like that crazy lady from the Jane Austen book that goes nuts and lives in her attic in her wedding dress.

Posted by: CG_ups at July 14, 2009 11:28 AM

Also, Lucali has awesome pizza but seriouisly degrades with time. It tastes best is scarfed within 5 minutes. On the upside, it's byob (to offset what I think is $24/plain pie)

Posted by: CG_ups at July 14, 2009 11:29 AM

Kens, that looks like a great call! 300 beers, Hungarian sausage and herring with onions; what more can one ask for?

Randi, I'm posting at a truly pathetic clip today. I've already hit 20. I might actually win (lose?) the PLUSA Posting Derby. Things are very slow today at the Death Star)

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 11:32 AM

The attached menu to Draft Barn is below along with the list of gazillion beers that they have.

http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/draft-barn/

The only negative part is that they only have beers BUT it's a shit load of them.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 14, 2009 11:33 AM

Draft barn is close to the M/R @ 9th Street and the F/G @ 4th Ave (yes, for all of you north of Flatbush Ave with G access, the G now stops at 4th Ave, 1 stop past Smith/9). Walking distance for us So Slo, Greenwood and Gowanus Shores types.

CG ups, there have been none of the "big", heavily promoted Brownstoner gatherings since Rope, but people have been arranging smaller gatherings with friends they've met on the blog. Kens was putting together an informal one for tomorrow, which he invited everyone here to, that has turned into somewhat of a larger gathering.

Have you tried the pizza at Sam's on Court? I thought it was excellent, but Mario has retired and I'm not sure it's still as good. I've heard great things about Lucali, but haven't gone there yet.

You could be the female version of Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window! Any of your neighbours up to any shenanigans?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 11:36 AM

The G runs down there? Awesome.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 11:42 AM

Never made it to Sam's. Am not as motivated as I heard it's not as good since Mario retired.

Totes McGotes on the Rear Window reference. My prime lounging spot in the living room overlooks the backyards. Everyone's conversations float up. Haven't witnessed anything too exciting at this point though.

So - following up on the stalled construction sites in williamsburg covered last week:

the 2 on the end of my block have decided it's a great time to do some pile driving at 7am in the morning. really annoying.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 12:19 PM

M4L- I did think that - but I think it would have been weird, plus the new buyers want to occupy our old apt and there are tenants already in the bottom 2 floors

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 12:23 PM

ah, thanks for the advice re: brick over vs. regular. I wouldn't have known which to order. Like how I went to Pizza and Calzone on Columbia Street and ordered the baked stromboli instead of the fried calzone. not my fault though, my know it all friend said calzone and stromboli were the same. let it be known, the stromboli are good but order the calzone!

Posted by: CG_ups at July 14, 2009 12:23 PM

mmmmm calzones

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 12:29 PM

#24

Columbia Street Waterfront area seems to have a bunch of places worth checking out, including the fried calzones. I've been meaning to go there for a long time now.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 12:33 PM

Biff, those streets are still not bike friendly smooth so wear a helmet

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 12:37 PM

So - how does one find investors to go in on a building together?

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 12:38 PM

Strombolis and calzones are def NOT the same!

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 12:39 PM

g10, you mean as a tenant in common or are you talking about joint purchase on an investment bldg?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 12:44 PM

M4L - either I suppose. TIC if each person planned to live in the building and make it their home.
We saw an open house for a 4 family bldg in primo park slope for relatively "cheap" price - but it has 2 rent control tenants and the other 2 apts are vacant. the entire bldg needs a gut renvo - so you would have to have cash to do all that work, but you would make TONS on the backend - in rent if you so decide as the bldg is huge or after fixing it up and selling it...

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 12:48 PM

I'm back from Fredericksburg, VA, where I stayed on Jefferson Davis Hwy in a hotel room that included a portrait of Robert E. Lee. UGH! To be fair, there was also a drawing of a Civil War battle from the Union perspective. Lots of Civil War history in this city. I had a good time visiting my sister, but remain convinced I will NEVER live in the south.

Posted by: East New York at July 14, 2009 12:53 PM

g10, TIC has to be someone you know & like a lot else you're asking for trouble. Investment partner - no idea where is good source.

on this bldg you referenced - really, such oppties exists at this time? just find it hard to believe real estate is a good cash flow investment in NYC right now - especially in the primo BK hoods

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 12:56 PM

G to 4th Ave! Love it. Will try to make it to Draft Barn tomorrow night. Would love to see everybody. odds are 60/40 in favor of my attendance, the 40% being the wild card of Mrs Wasder's tolerance for such antics.

Posted by: wasder at July 14, 2009 12:57 PM

ENY - it's just SO weird to me the South on so many levels is sooo stuck in the 60's - the 1860's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 12:57 PM

ENY, what is your definition of "south"? is virginia the cutoff?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 12:58 PM

The south has some really hot, dumb females.

sorry - was that inappropriate?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 1:00 PM

As Ace Frehley sang, "I'm back in the NY Groove."

Posted by: Adam Dahill at July 14, 2009 1:00 PM

DH, where AREN'T such females? see, that's how you insult - make sure insult a big population

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:03 PM

haha M4L - boom!

i'm typically good at insulting people - but the ladies of brownstoner are prob the smartest bunch of ladies i've ever encountered.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 1:05 PM

M4L - agreed on the TIC part
I do think that there are some opps out there, this bldg though would be for us to occupy the 1st and basment floors and rent out the top 3 apts. However there are still 2 RC tenants, so we could only reno the 4th floor apt for now and rent that for top dollar.

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 1:08 PM

Michael Kors looks so bloated. He needs to let the air out of those tires.

Posted by: Adam Dahill at July 14, 2009 1:08 PM

DH, the presence of smart ladies certainly does NOT preclude the existence of dumb ones. same can be said of anything - including us men. as I say to my wife often "stop complaining you didn't married the smartest guy around cause you could've easily married one of those idiots you see often on the streets"

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:09 PM

I'd say anything in Maryland or south of that is "south" to me. Maryland is clearly somewhat sophisticated, but there's a lot of "south" left down there.

"The south has some really hot, dumb females."

You can find these just about anywhere, including Brooklyn.

Posted by: East New York at July 14, 2009 1:09 PM

B.S., biff. They're crap.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2009 1:09 PM

And you can find not-so-hot, really dumb males just about anywhere, including Brooklyn.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2009 1:11 PM

g10, if you're not staring at 15% or more cashflow positive on that bldg, don't even think about it. rents stand a good chance of continuing to drop or at best be flat for a while during which time cost (ppty tax, water, heating,....) are going up. and let's not forget the job mkt still stinks

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:12 PM

Ace Frehley??

NO. Never. Try Nas' "New York State of Mind."

Posted by: East New York at July 14, 2009 1:15 PM

"And you can find not-so-hot, really dumb males just about anywhere, including Brooklyn."

Yep, also true.

Posted by: East New York at July 14, 2009 1:16 PM

"B.S., biff. They're crap."

Sorry, what's this in reference to, bxgrl?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 1:17 PM

I like the south in general (not for one minute defending the Confederacy, though!), in large part because I'm a a college football fan and there's nothing quite like going down there for a game.
Official border between north and south was the PA / MD state line (which is the Mason Dixon line in part).

Posted by: etson at July 14, 2009 1:17 PM

ENY, I share your definition of "south". as much as I like Richmond and Chapel Hill (visiting the in-laws), there's still a little too much "south" to my liking and comfort

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:18 PM

etson, when it comes to college football, one must acknowledge SEC is where it's at

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:19 PM

M4L - prob right - I just know in 6-10 years that bldg will be a cash cow

ok is it me or are NY women(young) just getting skinnier and skinnier?

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 1:20 PM

SEC college football games are amazing.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 1:20 PM

ENY- glad you're back unscathed from the south. My brother used to be stationed in Georgia with the Air Force- My parents were terrified of driving through the south (the south was none too welcoming to Jews) and that feeling of dislike and dread has never left me when traveling there.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2009 1:22 PM

Yeah, I didn't make it down last year but I usually get to at least one or two SEC / Big 12 / ACC games. The SEC is the best both for football and atmosphere but I don't know as many alums as the other two conferences.

Posted by: etson at July 14, 2009 1:23 PM

The Big 10 sucks.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 14, 2009 1:26 PM

g10, regarding skinny women, how young? below 30? above 30?

Posted by: more4less at July 14, 2009 1:30 PM

ENY, after growing up during a time when the South, to me, was the Klan, people getting hosed, beat up and lynched, I never developed any desire to go further south than Washington DC. As a child, a white Southern accent would send me under the table in fear. That feeling didn't go away until college and beyond, when I met some wonderful folks from the South, and realized that people are people, some good, some bad, accents and origins notwithstanding. That said, I still haven't been down south, except for a layover in the Miami airport, but it's more because I don't like hot, humid weather. I would like to go to the Asheville area of North Carolina, as I'd love to go to the Biltmore estate, and visit all of the crafts and antiques markets in the area.

I think younger than 25
it's kinda weird to me - maybe it's the clothing choices they are making... that you can actually see how skinny these women truly are. and am talking skinny, not thin or "normal" or curvy
like how men now all think women have butts and it's b/c the jean style changed in the past few years that lends to white women having "a butt"
I could go on and on!
ha

Posted by: etson at July 14, 2009 1:46 PM

Someone sent me a bunch of photos of models-they were frightening. they looked like they came out of concentration camps- I kid you not.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2009 1:47 PM

Sounds pretty good Kensingtonian. What time are you going to be there? This is tough week as I'm heading down to Florida to outfit some recently acquired Florida real estate. Going to be working from FL for 2 weeks while I finish furnishing the place. But I'll be online every day just like I am now.

I know people are Jersey Phobic, but you should really check out this new beer garden that just opened in downtown Jersey City. It's called the Zeppelin Beer Hall and it's amazing. I'm talking 60 ft ceilings and probably a good 50-60 tables outside. $5 pints and $10 liters of some amazing German beers.

'Someone sent me a bunch of photos of models-they were frightening. they looked like they came out of concentration camps- I kid you not.'

High fashion models are really freakishly skinny. You can't really tell in magazines or TV - but when you see a 6 foot 1, 95 lb 16 year old in real life, it's disturbing.

Thanks, MM. I didn't grow up in the south. But I do have some friends who are life-long southerners, people who made me realize that as you said, people are people. Hell, there's plenty of racism right here in Brooklyn, at times expressed on this blog. Still, I know how to handle myself in NYC, regardless of the situation. On the other hand, whenever I'm down south, I almost always have the feeling "This just isn't my place to be."

I don't know how in the world that fashion took off. Put some sprinkles, beads, gems and skeletons on T-shirts and sell em for 150 bucks a pop. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

My bet was that this trend will last for a couple of months tops (Von Dutch anyone?) but it's STILL around.

Someday the end of Ed Hardy is going to come.......

The beer garden over here in Jersey is actually closer than heading up to the one in Astoria if you are coming from Brooklyn.

bxgirl- The property in Florida is in Port St. Lucie. Got an amazing deal on it. Went in with my parents all cash and got it for a steal. Right on the golf course and 5 mins from the ocean. My aunt lives down there and my parents are getting older so it made sense for them to strike while the Florida market is still weak.

Nope- I can't get past the what happens when I'm old, wrinkled and sagging factor.

Funny thing though, I like them on guys. Very sexy but ONLY if they actually mean something. Not like the guys who go and get Asian symbols because they look cool or some tribal band that has actual significance but heck if they know what that is.

My favorite tattoos of all time are the ones Tommy Less got. He had each of his kids write their names and then got those tattooed on him. Yoiu can see the Dylan one on his wrist (second photo down on the right)

Not sure where, but it wouldn't be in too provocative a place. Maybe on the inside of the arm between the shoulder and elbow? I'm not sure yet.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 2:55 PM

hmmm, THL, that Tommy Lee thing with his kids is pretty cool too. I think I'll consider that too.

Kens, I always thought tattoos for Jews were a big no-no too, but found this online from a reform rabbi:

"In general, Jewish law does not permit the intentional defacement of the human body, and this applies to tattoos. Also, after the Holocaust, many Jews are repulsed by the idea of marking their bodies in the way that the Nazis marked the bodies of their victims.

However, I do not know of any rabbi or Jewish cemetery that would refuse to bury a Jew because their body had a tattoo. That would be a terrible violation of the Jewish principle of Kavod Ha-Meit, giving honor to the dead."

I've got a Japanese symbol tattooed on my upper right arm, it's translates to Art and Skill. That's what you get for getting drunk on Halloween when you are 18 on St. Marks Place. 1996 St. Marks was soo much more fun than it is today. Punk Rockers with Huge Sail fin Mohawks and all types of debauchery. It was actually a dare from a friend. My mother always said to be careful when drinking; you may wake up with a tattoo. Well, it actually happened.

Posted by: Adam Dahill at July 14, 2009 2:57 PM

Maybe we should all get drunk tomorrow night and go get some tattoos? Perhaps a scantilly-clad contortionist typist?

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 2:57 PM

Nice design. I wouldn't do it just because I don't want any elective surgery.

Posted by: Arkady at July 14, 2009 2:58 PM

sorry left arm.

I thought about getting a gunslingers belt tattooed around my waist when I was single but now it seems pointless that I'm engaged.

Posted by: Adam Dahill at July 14, 2009 2:58 PM

Be VERY careful of the chinese tattoos Biff...

I've got a tattoo and I'll tell anyone apart from DIBS where it is...

Adam, you'll have to keep your left arm exposed tomorrow lest someone confuses us for each other once again, as mopar once did.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 3:02 PM

I've always heard that tattoos ARE against Jewish law, and that Jewish cemeteries (at least Conservative and Orthodox) will not bury Jews with tattoos (excepting concentration camp tattoos).

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 14, 2009 3:02 PM

Biff, I heard that they wouldn’t bury you in a Jewish cemetery unless the tattoos that you have were forced upon you, such as holocaust numbers or army tattoos. I also heard that upon death, you can get it cut out and then get buried at the Jewish Cemetery.

I haven't been this excited by a designer since

CarrollGardened and Kens, I think you're both right. However, as a non-practicing Jewish agnostic (is that an oxymoron?) who plans on being cremated, so I'm not too worried about where I can and cannot be buried.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 14, 2009 3:07 PM

chicken, I love it when you talk dirty like that!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 14, 2009 3:08 PM

Biff, then go for it. As my ex-boss who is an ex Harley dude with 8 tattoos told me, "be sure to get something meaningful and at a place where you can still wear shorts and a t-shirt to the company picnic and not reveal it." Otherwise, people at Death Star may not get you.

I just asked a friend who is infinitely more religious than I if it's against Jewish law and if Jewish cemeteries will refuse burial, and the best response she could give me was, "Some say yes, some say no". Personally, I wouldn't let that stop me from getting a tattoo were I so inclined, and I've recently been tempted but that may just be mid-life crisis talking.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at July 14, 2009 3:42 PM

maybe Jews - Tattoos is like Catholics and Suicide. The Church says that if you commit suicide you can't have a catholic burial, but in practice (in liberal areas) they'll still do the Catholic mass and burial and shrug it off saying the suicidee made a mistake and will be forgiven.

Posted by: Art Salt at July 14, 2009 3:55 PM

It's funny Dibs - I never watched one episode, until my Tivo one day taped the first pilot show and you could tell then he was not a happy camper and the he was one of those husbands who was all 'yes, dear", but plotting his escape all the while

Posted by: gemini10 at July 14, 2009 3:55 PM

When it first started it was quite sweet and tender. The children are beautiful and really quite wonderful.

Thing is, you started to see this tension and anger between them. She's snap and belittled him (nothing big but you knew this was the 'for TV' version). He'd ignore her and looked like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world than in a house with 8 kids.

Sad.

This seems headed for tragedy and they're all going to wind up living in a trailer park or something.

My backpack IS my office.

I saw Terry Richardson get ready for a shoot the other day on 5th Ave and 55th, and his model was truly scary. People should boycott this sh*t.

We'll try and see u at the Beer Hall, be warned, I was there once and the sausage is good but they forget to cook it most of the way thru. It is pork, after all. Order accordingly.

You guys (us guys) will be missing the NY Philharmonic play two of the biggest warhorses ever in PP. I was thinking of going but the program offends my intelligence.

I share some of y'alls fear of the south. Freaks me out. Spending quite a bit of time in Houston when I was in the marine biz did nothing to allay the feeling. Especially when you are automatically assumed to be one of the clique.

Biff! Be very careful of Chinese tattoos. The calligraphy of most of the ones I've seen here in the U.S. is very poor--looks like an illiterate Chinese person carved on your skin.

The character you like is "sky" but the more common meaning is "heaven".

Chicken, are you Chinese?

Posted by: WonTon at July 14, 2009 5:56 PM

WonTon, thanks for the advice. I'll definitely try to find someone who knows what he or she is doing if I go through with it.

Thanks also for the precision on the meaning...I actually knew the character also represents heaven but forgot to mention that.

Chicken is chinese. We've met before at a previous gathering; he's a great guy.

Are you planning on joining us tomorrow night?
