I hope Mr. B posts a story about someone stealing thyme in Cobble Hill. That basil thread yesterday was hysterical. At the end I referred to everyone as a bunch of imbasils.
By the way, did anyone catch the discussion in the HOTD thread toward the end of the day? Etson pointed it out late in the OT. Check out the HOTD comment at 5:40. It's a must read.

Biff, are you going back to school?
Liverpool Hope University is offering an MA in Beatles studies:
http://www.hope.ac.uk/postgraduate-2009/the-beatles-popular-music-and-society-ma.html
The Beatles, Popular Music and Society (MA)
A unique opportunity to study in the city of Liverpool, home of The Beatles and with access to leading Popular Music academics and Beatles specialists, this MA is the only one of its kind in the UK and the world.
This MA will examine the significance of the music of the Beatles in the construction of identities, audiences, ethnicities and industries, and localities; by doing so it will suggest ways to understand popular music as a social practice, focusing attention on issues such as the role of music in the construction of regional identities, concepts of authenticity, aesthetics, meaning, value, performance, and the use of popular music as a discursive evocation of place. Furthermore, in a consideration of popular music as a text, popular music semiotics will also be employed.

Biff and lechacal - I'd never seen anything like yesterday's HOTD thread after "Surprised Owner" weighed in. I forwarded the comment to Mr. B and suggested it get its own thread today. At Mr. B's request, I also took screen shots of Awaye's listing in case they took it down. I've heard sleazy broker stories, but this . . .

He says that the broker, of whom he had never heard before, copied the photos and details from his website to their own. He says the broker now presenting it as their listing without his authorization.

Tim Horton's coffee is putrid (Second Cup is much better, sixyears). I always hated it. I can't wait to see the Americans' faces when they're served the shot-sized Tim Horton's small coffee. A small coffee here is the equivalent of a large coffee in most other countries.
A Canadian friend said, "When you grow up in a small town, Tim's is always your first coffee, like your first love you never forget".
I replied, "I wish I lasted as long the first time with my first love as my first cup of Tim Horton's coffee lasted."

Kensingtonian, I was at Anyway Cafe in Manhattan Beach last night and when a group of girls walked by, someone said "What a bunch of J-1s". You learn something new every day!
Anyway Cafe is far from Asshat-land and a great place. Good beers, outdoors, mellow, and chances are you'll be the only non-Russian speaker there (unless you do in fact speak Russian).

I know this technically belongs in the Awaye thread, but I wanted to say this here and not further bog down that thread with off-topic nonsense.
What is clearly trying to make every thread about him. Argue with him, agree with him, get swatted in the @ss by him, etc. ad nauseum. The Awaye thread is a very interesting topic and should provide interesting facts and anecdotes from knowledgeable folks. Turning it into an argument with the What is going to drag it down into the complete tom foolery that every other thread here results in. Can we please have one thread where folks just ignore his obvious grandstanding and shennanigans for attention? Stop feeding the effing pigeons! Just for one thread and just for one day. Please!

Ha ha, I refer to them as J1's. They come in flocks to work in US for the summer. Some of my friends statements are "hey, you don't want to date in the summer. Ditto, I know, I know! I just really hate seeing interesting topics that have the potential to educate folks end that way. By the time you get done reading it all, it feels like 35 minutes of your life that you can't get back have been sucked out and for what? To read garbage? I originally landed on and stayed with this site because there was a lot to learn about a variety of topics. The OT added some fun in my day as well. Now, I still get my fun in the OT, but the learning has dwindled significantly. It's just dissapointing that intelligent arguments get lost in what has become the 'background noise' on this site.:(

Snappy, it happens to the best of us. Just forget about it and move on. I would also like the personal attacks (on all sides) to be minimized and the focus to be on the issues. Having said that, I was one of the worst offenders here in the early days, but eventually realized it wasn't what I wanted and I've tried to be more open to what others say and ignore the personal stuff. I also now really try to stay out of arguments that don't involve me. I still slip up; I'm only human, but all I can do is try to forget it whenever that happens.

This post is for "Day Trader In Bed Stuy". This Hedge Fund Jackoff don't have a liquid One Million in the bank but he's claims to be a "Hedgie"!
Lenny Dykstra: 'Bank Fraud' Led to Bankruptcy
http://www.cnbc.com/id/31833973
Lenny Dykstra sat down with CNBC at his $24 million hilltop estate behind the gates of Sherwood Country Club.
Lenny Dykstra has made over 90 million dollars in his Baseball career. Read this story on how Rich people are getting a Traffic Post shoved up their asses! You retards believe living in the Ghetto will bring you "Salvation"? You are a bunch of Jackasses all of you!
He says when he bought Wayne Gretzky's estate two years ago, a broker from Washington Mutual promised him a single $17.5 million loan, but delivered only $12.5 million.
Dykstra says he was urged to go get a second $8 million mortgage, to complete the $17.5 million and allow him to have some extra cash, as the house, Dykstra says, appraised for $25 million.
The money shot!
Dykstra says the broker promised he could refinance both mortgages into one affordable payment after 60 days. But the baseball legend claims the mortgage broker disappeared.
There was no re-fi.
Meantime, he was paying close to $200,000 a month in mortgages, and his income was only $125,000, that money coming from a promissory note he received after selling his car wash business.
Unable to continue paying more than he was making, Dykstra says he was forced to sell the promissory note back to the owners of the car wash to pay off the second mortgage. That erased his nest egg, he says.
Foooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
See ya this fall Jackasses..
The What
Someday this war is gonna end...

Aw, thanks Snappy, but unfortunately, my wife refers to me more frequently as Biffy the Jiffy.
From History of the World Part I (not to be read by the more easily offended PLUSAs):

"ENY, at least Virginia voted for Obama!"
sixyears, question for you. I saw Obama's picture in a few public schools this year. While I'm happy everytime I see his picture and the word President on it, I was wondering, though, if this is done in the public schools for all Presidents. I can't recall whether or not I saw W's picture posted during his presidency. I would assume it was.
On the one hand, I wouldn't expect the school system to show an explicit bias toward one President over the other. However, on the other hand, I know the majority of educators seemed to be really pulling for an Obama victory, and maybe they don't mind displaying this preference.
Any insight?

How about the yanks help the Mets out and offer a juicy pkg to Toronto for Halladay so the Phillies don't get him and effectively lock down the division from my hapless mets
Posted by: more4less at July 10, 2009 1:46 PM
Biff, no, this is pure preference on the part of educators. Bush's picture was never up anywhere. The NYC DOE did have a special arrangement with ABC to view the inaugural live in all schools, which I can understand as it was a historic event. That said, they would not have done it had McCain won, and they f&*^ed up the transmission anyway in half the city's schools.
Though I voted for, admire, and support Obama, I don't think his picture should be up in schools, as in most cases it's a result of teachers' personal biases. In general the number of pictures, t-shirts, etc. of him makes me a bit uneasy - it seems more appropriate to dictatorships and monarchies. Nobody went around wearing Clinton shirts, and I've only seen one ironic Reagan shirt in my life (Reagan as Che - "Viva la Reagan Revolucion!"). Then again, perhaps I saw too many pictures of Great Leaders when I lived in the Middle East.
On the other hand, some students may be slightly more inspired each day if they saw President Obama's face in their classroom, and it's nice to see a genuine communal feeling of support for him across the usual lines of covert race/class warfare.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 10, 2009 1:46 PM
Ditto - ha - we actually saw that online and really thought it was great, am not sure I want to live in Greenpoint
Posted by: gemini10 at July 10, 2009 1:57 PM
That's a very balanced view, sixyears. I agree entirely (apart from the fact that I did not vote for Obama).
I don't think it's right for educators of any political persuasion to decorate their classrooms with pictures of contemporary political figures in a promotional manner. And yes, I would say that about politicians whom I support as well.

Six, when I was in school we had that giant American Presidents banner that wrapped around the top of the classroom. He IS our President. He's not just some politician currently running for office. That I would be opposed to. President Obama is part of America's History.

Shoot, I just typed a lengthy response to your post, sixyears, and mistakenly deleted it.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. It's a tough call. Even as a big supporter of Obama, I am uncomfortable with having educators so openly show a bias. It is an uneasy feeling similar to the one I get when Church and State are so closely intertwined. On the other hand, I can see how Obama can be a source of unity and inspiration to students. At the end of the day, I would prefer consistency, meaning they hang a picture of every President or none.
I also don't believe they would have shown a McCain inauguration, but I feel Obama's inauguration was so historically significant that it was the right thing to do to show the students (or at least to attempt to...damn glitches!)

"ENY, no mention today about the Yankees moving into a first place tie with the BoSox?"
Funny you should ask, Biff. You see, as any classy Yankee fan could tell you, it only matters wwat place you're in at the end. If I were say, a Phillies fan, I'd probably already be celebrating being tied for first.....in July.
However when one of your team's all-time great players is nicknamed "Mr. October," you know when to get excited. Let's face it - first is better than second. But the game is not yet at hand (although I daresay we do look good right now).

THL, I have no objection to banners like that, or any other sort of "in context" display. I certainly didn't object to my department's bulletin board display last year which included both Obama and McCain (it was really fun during the early primaries - we had photos of *all* the candidates). If students create a display with a photo of President Obama and "What should he do about X?" with material from different viewpoints on X, fine. I do object to stand-alone pictures of President Obama with no purpose other than political idolatry. I never saw such pictures of Presidents Bush or Clinton, but I do see them of Obama.
And Rob, Obama condoms? What is this world coming to?
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 10, 2009 2:16 PM

Haven't been yet....but the suspense is killing me.
Obama is clearly a special deal. He's the first black president....who ever thought that would eve happen in their lifetime (not me)? But I think the pictures of all of the presidents should be in the classroom, at least in elementary school, maybe on a special board - so the kids learn who they hell they are (and were). Make it a U.S. history thing, not as a political thing.

Biff....I never visited it when I lived in HK. It's really poor and depressing. I believe also that they have their own laws there and one of them is that property cannot be passed to a female.
On the brothel issue, I'd be scared of what you could pick up there. They don't have the cleanliness standards and personal hygiene that Thais pride themselves on.
I am willing to organize a Friends of Brownstoner Cultural Exchange Tour to Bangkok. I can book you into whatever style hotel you prefer from $20 - 450 per night. We will start the evening at King's Castle II (better than King's Castle I & III) then proceed to Crown Royal and a few other girlie bars.
At around 9:30 we'll head to my bars where any of the brownstoner "f words" can find what they are looking for.
This tour is open to both men & women as there is something in bangkok for everyone.
The whole thing will be repeated everynight until you get tired or something falls off.

"He really needs to get laid"
Or lay off whatever drug he's obviously on.

Kowloon Walled City is gone. They bulldozed it in 1993. Now there's nothing there but a park.
Nearby is Kowloon City, a neighborhood with lots of good Chiu Chow and Thai restaurants. If you come to Hong Kong when I'm there, I'll take you.

dh...some day I have to go through my old passports and count the number of times I've been to Thailand. I bet it's pushing 90!!!!! A lot of weekends down there during the three year stay in HK.

Chungking Mansions has gotten quite hip lately, Dave, for a certain type of "adventuresome" gwailo. It's not so dangerous anymore because it got notorious as a den for illegal immigrants, and now the police are all over it.
I don't often have a reason to visit that neighborhod, but I have been to eat at Chungking Mansions once, at one of the "Clubs" for Indian food.

WonTon...where in HK do you live. When I was there, I was on Old Peak Road, No. 9, Queen's Garden appropriately enough.
Is Mozart Steuben restaurant still open??? best rye bread in all of Asia!!!!

Well, to close off the day as it began in the first post, we are a bunch of embasils.
I can see why the What gets upset when we don't listen to his financial stuff: 1. the world economic situation difficult to understand, or the world would not be in the mess it is in. 2. it is much more fun to watch Michael Jackson dance than to think of the ramifications of what is to occur. We have not seen the likes of it in our day. My finance person is trying to get this into my head.
Or just go take drugs and get laid (above posts). I hope my Park Ave. finance guy has more to offer than pills to anethsetize the masses (which is what we get on the news).
Biff asked the What the other day what we might do to get ready. I asked this of my finance person. I could list it here but don't know if anyone cares. Then if anyone disagrees there is a big firestorm.
Brownstoner is not the right place to get this information.
Posted by: BklynSoFar at July 10, 2009 5:35 PM
What never told us what we need to get ready for. When we asked him to tell us his reply was "No."
He doesn't have a clue. He throws it up and bats it around to get attention. When nobody pays him any attention then he attacks me. It's all so predictable. Day in and day out.

I don't live in HK all year round so I keep a tiny flat in Sheung Wan near Hollywood Road.
I have never eaten at Mozart restaurant--is that the place you pass when you are walking up around the botanic garden toward the Peak?
The best western bread right now in HK is at the bakery of the Joel Roubouchon restaurant in the Landmark building.

Bklynsofar...I just saw your post.
I'll say this...one thing that I've always known yet somehow forgot to keep at the forefront of my mind here on B'Stoner is that you can't change someone else's behavior. The only thing you can do is change your own behavior/reaction to that person. It's like what Biff said earlier in the day in response to my 11:58...he mentioned how he just tries now to stay out of the big dust-ups. That's a stance I need to employ as well because the truth is that it is quite silly to allow myself to get so worked up over someone who I don't know, will never meet and in the end has zero impact on my life. Would I love to get an intelligent convo out of the What regarding his economic ideas? Sure thing! But I know better than to think for one second that he can/will engage in a thoughtful and intelligible discussion without resorting to saying things like 'figure it out yourself you @sshole' or 'suck my nuts' instead of making his point sanely. B'stoner *could* be a place to get financial info, but the way it stands right now all I can do is accept that it's simply not going to happen. I won't blame others for engaging with the What. The What gets his rocks off on attention and clearly folks that engage him get something out of it too (I don't know what, but hey, to each his own!) or else they wouldn't argue with him. Maybe they are just trying earnestly to get him to explain his view and back up his allegations/predictions with real data. I don't know. As a lawyer I definitely have engaged in back and forth battles in the courtroom that have essentially been shouting matches and I know it's hard sometimes to resist going there so I won't be pointing any fingers of shame at anyone. I asked that everyone try their best to let the Awaye thread come out clean of What arguments because it really was interesting to me and I wanted to get some real info there. Alas, I am just another poster in a sea of many and folks will do whatever they wish. I guess when the ignore button feature is provided (when is that by the way?) I'll have to make use of it.

Mozart Steuben is on the road that comes down from Albany Road just before you hit the Lan Kwai Fong area. It's one of the first shops as you make that turn, next to a dry cleaner and then a row of restaurants with the grade school on the right. An excellent Pavlova dessert too!!!!!
I like that area of Sheung Wan

Snappy, only the 'tards engage the What. Who would actually waste their time doing that???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 10, 2009 5:58 PM
Dave, you Super PLUSA! You're still here? LOL
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 10, 2009 6:05 PM
snappy, I find the forum posts still an area to learn a lot of stuff. in the home page threads, there's still a ton to learn but diff is there's a lot noise to ignore or bypass. Go have a beer and you'll feel better.

I'm on the train to Philly, nothing else to do. No eye candy in this car either :(
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 10, 2009 6:08 PM
Sorry about your lack of eye candy Dave!
M4L, I'm sipping a brew as we speak! Yes, the forum is still very informative. I check it everyday, sometimes several times a day. But you can't deny that more substantive financial stuff gets covered on the main pages. I'm fine and will deal with this well...I think I just happened to hit my limit today with the bullsh!t. Nevertheless, Snappy shall remain happy :)

I agree with you snappy- sometimes he just gets to me and I lost patience. But I have little tolerance for those who enable What- not just tolerate him. And for those with the really bad psychoanalysis of anger issues, well- I have to wonder what their issue is as well.
By the way- I'll be looking for the pink gingham tonight :-)

And my question to Bklynsofar is: What makes you think What is a financial analyst, as opposed to dave or any of the other finance people who post here? Because he said so? Whatever makes you think What is telling the truth about himself- and would you take financial information from someone who not only can't be civil, but grossly insults anyone who disagrees with him? Tell you what- put your money where your mouth is and hire the guy.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 10, 2009 7:10 PM
so Dave, all safe and sound back in philly for the weekend?
Posted by: brooklyndoug at July 10, 2009 9:37 PM
The PLs post 100s of crap posts of lame lyrics and LOL Cats and you think we need a ignore button for What???
Posted by: Meatball at July 10, 2009 11:13 PM
Hi, Snappy, thank you for your thoughtful and eloquent answer. It seems as if I had a long thing to write back to you, so I'll have to find it or review it later if whatever I wrote is still relevant. It seems that things change almost every day here in Brownstoner Cyberville. Will keep in touch and answer more later. You are a treasure.
Posted by: BklynSoFar at July 12, 2009 7:10 PM
Thanks Bklynsofar :) I'll look forward to chatting it up with you. Maybe together we will bring peace to B'Stoner Land and win the Nobel Peace Prize for Internet Calm :) LOL
Meatball, the ignore button is not just for the What. Feel free to put me and all other PLUSAs on ignore :) I think I can speak for everyone when I say trust me, it would not hurt our feelings! I'm sure each and every one of us will be put on 'ignore' for at least 1 person in B'Stoner Land!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 12, 2009 7:55 PM
Hi, Snappy, just a note to say thank you and I received your post above -- peace in B-Land :-). And I notice you are diplomatic in your writing to people here. That is a wonderful skill.
I have come to appreciate the What. He has been mad at me before and may be again. I believe I learned better how to address the What, but I hardly have time to address anyone or even get online. Nor would I ask the What for financial info. Believe it or not, I think I know what he is talking about. In my quest to make some sense of the world economic situation (as if anyone could ever do that :-), I must have run across come of the same reading material as he has. And no one could ever explain it in a comment space anyway.
Well, not much time online today either. When the What writes tick and 4 months, I'm surprised people haven't heard that before. I've been hearing that for the last 2 months (that it would be a predicted 6 months total)-- until more bursting bubbles, civil unrest, then hunger, etc. This is almost too painful to write about.
