At five minutes and six seconds after 4 AM this morning, the time and date was 04:05:06 07/08/09. This will not happen again for a thousand years. (Unless you don't use a military clock and count this afternoon when it is 04:05:06pm).

Top of the mornin' my lovely PLUSAs :)

I know this is a sore subject for many, but I must ask this question....

I heard on the radio this morning that the city of LA is asking for donations to help with the costs of MJ's memorial service as it is estimated that it will cost them approximately 4 mill. They have set up a website where fans can donate via paypal. My question is, is that typical? Have other cities made such a request when security and other related costs have run so high for a memorial or any other type of service? At first I blanched at the thought, but then I thought about the economy we are in right now and wondered if that has something to do with it.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 8, 2009 9:27 AM

randi, it was my pleasure to ruin your day.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 9:28 AM

But Biff, wouldn't it be every hundred years, not thousand?

04:05:06 07/08/21'09'? Am I being dense/missing something?

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 8, 2009 9:28 AM

If you follow the day/month/year convention, you can observe the same sequence next month, on August 7. And even though it appears to be a rare occurrence, such interesting patterns aren't that unusual. Consider these from the past:
01:23:45 6/7/89
12:34.56 7/8/90
01:02:03 04/05/06
In a couple of years we'll have 11:11:11 11/11/11.

Blanching is the preferred method for cooking many vegetables. Always remember to shock them in ice water after blanching so as to retain the bright color.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 9:30 AM

"thanks for spiting me yesterday dibs."

Funny, Randi! That was actually amusing how you were pushing DIBS for 50 posts and DIBS wouldn't give it to you. Not sure if it was intentional or if DIBS just logged off.

Anyway, did anyone see this? It's the boozsicle. Looks yummy.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 8, 2009 9:30 AM

Snappy - Those kinds of costs usually come out of city budgets.

Posted by: Arkady at July 8, 2009 9:32 AM

Cobble, you could be right, although I've seen it mentioned a few places that it is only every thousand years. Not sure why though and my head is hurting trying to figure it out.

Arkady, that's interesting. You clearly have a fascination with words and numbers. You and wasder would get along well.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 8, 2009 9:33 AM

Biff...that bring to mind another white trash picnic favorite:

Carve a small round hole in the skin of a watermelon and overturn a bottle of vodka in it so that it empties into the watermelon. Proceed to eat watermelon and get wasted.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 9:33 AM

I'm thinking it's the economy in CA Snappy. Otherwise, they might have the resources? That said, this is an unusual circumstance/event. I was pondering last night who else would inspire such a huge memorial? — Thinking musicians/artists only. Not politicians or other public figures.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 8, 2009 9:33 AM

I saw randi's countdown and was leaving the office early. After logging on at home and seeing nothing but dribble, nothing noteworthy to comment on, I was glad to ruin randi's day.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 9:34 AM

Snappy, California the state is at the brink of bankruptcy - not surprising they're asking for donations. For the Lakers championship rally - private parties helped offset that cost too (for same reason)

Posted by: more4less at July 8, 2009 9:34 AM

Dave, I've admitted my bedding problem and have decided to try and curtail such expenditures!

Arkady, that's how I always understood that process to work, but I was shocked at asking the public for donations to pay for it. I guess they really just can't spare the 4 mill for this.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 8, 2009 9:34 AM

"Blanching is the preferred method for cooking many vegetables"

Only if you prefer them white-bread tasteless.

Posted by: cmu at July 8, 2009 9:35 AM

i can think of something else to put in that watermelon hole.

Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 8, 2009 9:35 AM

I think part of the impact of MJ's demise was his comparative youth & the fact that he hadn't been seen to be ailing & was about to start the big gig in London.

Posted by: Arkady at July 8, 2009 9:36 AM

Dave, that's not a trash thing...it's a young and dumb thing! We did that in college except we used hypodermic needles instead of cutting a hole in the watermelon. Also, we injected grapes with Jack Daniels. We told ourselves it was justified as we were getting our daily allowance of fruit :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 8, 2009 9:36 AM

DIBS, are you calling posts from me, THL and bxgrl dribble? By the way, was that a Freudian slip and you meant to say "drivel"?

That reminds me, the Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is lamster. And it's not a hipster who makes lame jokes, otherwise I would change my login to Dirty Lamster.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 8, 2009 9:38 AM

Biff - Here's a new one I just learned:
PRONUNCIATION:

MEANING:
noun: The exploitation and intimidation of tenants by landlords.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Peter Rachman (1919-1962), a landlord in London who became notorious for unethical practices including driving out tenants to maximize revenue from his rental properties.

Posted by: Arkady at July 8, 2009 9:38 AM

randi...you could use a pencil-sized hole for what you are talking about.

So you did go through with the sex change???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 9:38 AM

Wow, so CA is damned near bankrupt, eh? I wonder how many other states are in the same position. Has their pending bankruptcy been a long time coming or is it a circumstance of the current economy? (sorry to introduce a non-cat/sex/food subject here!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 8, 2009 9:39 AM

Seems ironic we talk about the press giving so much coverage to MJ's death yet we can't seem to stop talking about it.

"My question is, is that typical? Have other cities made such a request when security and other related costs have run so high for a memorial or any other type of service?"

If people read my posts about the economy then you would know about California's economic troubles!

California budget nightmare
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other state officials face tough fiscal choices now that voters have defeated a series of budget proposals.

http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/20/news/economy/california_budget_crisis/index.htm

The state must make "severe cuts now," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday. He and state legislative leaders will have to hammer out a budget deal before the fiscal year ends on June 30. The gap covers the rest of this fiscal year and the next.

California government doles out more IOUs

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-07-iou_N.htm

California wrote another 12,500 IOUs on Tuesday rather than pay all of its bills in cash, the latest chapter in the financial mess engulfing the nation's most populous state.

This is called a collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble!

Arkady, that's a good one. Seems to be a word for almost everything these days. Did you watch the recent Scripps National Spelling Bee? It's amazing what those young men and women know, although I do wonder if they have any lives outside of studying words.

There was a great documentary called Spellbound (nominated for Academy Award for Best Documenary) that was about various competitors in the 1999 Scripps Spelling Bee.

You might also like the documentary Wordplay that was done in 2006 and features Will Shortz and includes "famous" crossword solvers. It also covers the 2005 American Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

I know both of the above sound extremely lame but they are both worth viewing.

I was surprised by how well done the MJ memorial was. It was somber and appropriate and yet it celebrated the life of a great entertainer. The family looked solid and dignified. Of course that was probably due to the fact that the matriarch made most of the decisions. I think it would have been a very different show had MJ himself directed it.
The children are sweet and beautiful, I think they will be well provided for through the will. Evidently the estate has earned tens of millions in the past few days on royalties on all things Michael.

Bridges, snappy has correct mindset for this mess we're in. she has a job, place to live, friends to be with,... and realize if this econ tanks on us there's nothing we can do to avoid it so why worry about stuff you can't change. It's not like there's a genius out there than can explain to us how to avoid or profit from this impending doom. For example, if all a doctor is going to do is to tell a patient that he has terminal cancer but has no remedy of any sort what good is that doc in that situation

Posted by: more4less at July 8, 2009 10:32 AM

Morning everyone.

Re: California

There is no doubt that the economy has taken its toll. But California has been governed and hamstrung by referendum for 30 years. Structurally, so much of the way California taxes and spends is governed by binding referenda that the state's leaders have much less flexibility to respond to crises than other jurisdictions. NYC tax revenues are down quite a bit from projections, but NYC has been governed mroe nimbly than is possible in California, so we are not experiencing the kind of crisis that they are. There are many factors at work in California, but you can't avoid the huge role of referenda in hamstringing the governor and legislature.

Meanwhile, on the MJ front, I've found the first record I ever bought with allowance money, Jackson 5 Greatest Hits. Still has the original sleeve with all the ads for posters, stickers and the like. Did you know that, back in 1971, for $2 and a clipped coupon from the sleeve, you could have been Tito's personal soul mate? The songs still sound great (yes, I still have a turntable). I do feel sad for Michael and his family (especially the kids).

Posted by: more4less at July 8, 2009 10:52 AM

Hey What....

IMF Sees Stronger Global Rebound From ’09 Recession
July 8 (Bloomberg) -- The International Monetary Fund said the global economic rebound next year will be stronger than it forecast in April as the financial system stabilizes and the pace of contractions from the U.S. to Japan moderates.
The Washington-based lender said in a revised forecast
released today that the world economy will expand 2.5 percent in 2010, compared with its April projection of 1.9 percent growth. A contraction this year will be 1.4 percent, worse than an April forecast for a 1.3 percent drop, the IMF said.

That would mean the recession ends in the fourth quarter. There is no depression, DUMBASS.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 8, 2009 10:54 AM

At the height of the Japanese bubble the Emperor's Palace was the most expensive place on earth. Japan's economy crashed and the land valuations never came back to equilibrium. If you brought property in Japan in 1990 today you are STILL under water. This a known fact! 19 years of negative prices have totally destroyed Japan and I'm afraid the same thing will happen here but it will be more violent and painful.

This is not japan and the response has been completely different. Your cut and paste economics reveals you as the not-so-know-it-all that you are.

Give up.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 11:02 AM

How about instead you address some of the facts that I've shown you??? The IMF data.

There won't be any collapse because the data is now pointing to a recovery.

How about once in awhile you not act like such a jerk and respond to the discussion at hand instead of introducing additional non supported crap.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 11:04 AM

sam- so right. You just have to wonder how someone takes so much pleasure from other people's pain (or the anticipation of it). Makes him barely- if at all- human.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 8, 2009 11:06 AM

bridges, what are you talking about??? What has our contributions to the IMF got anything to do with their forecasts??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 10:38 AM

Well, it's just striking to me that the people running the IMF have investment bank backgrounds, such as this gentleman:

"John Lipsky assumed the position of First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund on September 1, 2006.

Before coming to the Fund, Mr. Lipsky was Vice Chairman of the JPMorgan Investment Bank. In this position, he advised the firm's principal market risk takers, published independent research on the principal forces shaping global financial markets, was actively engaged with JPMorgan's key clients, and represented the firm around the world with senior public and financial sector decision makers.

Previously, Mr. Lipsky served as JPMorgan's Chief Economist, and as Chase Manhattan Bank's Chief Economist and Director of Research. He served as Chief Economist of Salomon Brothers, Inc. from 1992 until 1997. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Lipsky was based in London, where he directed Salomon Brothers' European Economic and Market Analysis Group."

"How about instead you address some of the facts that I've shown you??? The IMF data.
"

A little nibble Dave. in Oct '89 the unemployment rate was 4.7% and now it's 9.4%. That's about 50% increase (Give or take), right. For the recession to be over the Obama Administration will have to come up with about 5 million jobs. Now Dave please explain to us how we are going to replace the lost jobs and get America back on the road to recovery after the biggest credit expansion in history (NASDAQ and Real Estate)?

Well who is going to run the IMF if not bankers? Baristas, ad agency execs, nurses??????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 11:11 AM

That guy's credentials seem pretty damn good. Not every banker is part of the problem just like not every school teacher is part of that problem. Foolish.

"Well who is going to run the IMF if not bankers?"

I hear the workers at the Stella Doro plant in the Bronx are available :) (sorry, couldn't resist)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 8, 2009 11:13 AM

Think ahead, What. If the economy expands over 2% next year there will again be massive job creation. You're problem is that you are stuck in all the backward looking data. These numbers have already started to change direction or at least slow down their decline. Even you can understand the ramifications of that.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 11:14 AM

But dibs we are in this mess because of the fed and banks monkeying around, there's no good reason to believe the people who got us into this mess possess the wisdom to get us out again.

Well who is going to run the IMF if not bankers? Baristas, ad agency execs, nurses??????

I welcome what's suggeston that what and DIBS take a bit of a break from their daily point/counterpoint. We all know where you both stand. There is new data to interpret every day, but that doesn't mean the argument is going anywhere. It's like repeatedly arguing over whether global warming is a manmade phenomenon based on each day's temperature in Prospect Park. How about a monthly economic smackdown thread featuring what and DIBS? Then you can each marshall a month's worth of trends and data and make your best case. And for the rest of the month, just hang out and keep it mellow.

He is interested still in joining us at future 'Stoner get-togethers, and I informed him of the one Kens was putting together next week.

He asked me to give his regards to all in "Brownstoner country".

I refuse to watch NYC Prep. I love trash TV but that crosses a line for me.
They are minors and it disturbs me to think of the parents that would allow their children to sign on for something like this.
I would HATE for this to become popular resulting in more children doing regrettable things in front of cameras.
Much as they want to be adults they haven't a clue. Shame on the parents shame shame shame!!

Miami Social. One of the guys on it used to be on Big Brother. Hardy. He was so sweet and hometown on BB and on this he's acting like the sleezy club promoter guy. Weird.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 8, 2009 12:00 PM

What,

I can't tell if I'm on your mute or not, or what that really means anymore. I think the answer to your question is that if the economy rebounds, it will be because businesses saw opportunities and started investing and hiring, and that if they don't, the economy won't rebound. Economy generated way more than the number of jobs you seek in the 90s. No reason it can't happen. Question is whether it will. I'm not sure, beyond that, what your question is. I am also not sure why it is hypocritical of DIBS not to respond to your question after you asked for a hiatus (which I agreed with).

"YOU JUST COULDN'T FIGURE OUT THAT A RISING GDP NUMBER WILL RAISE EMPLOYMENT."

I disagree. GDP is a number for the overall economy. Assuming flat productivity per employee, the rising US population (and growth accelerated late-80s/early-90s so a rising rate of people entering the potential employee groups now) could raise GDP at the same time as unemployment rises.

What, we already HAD the big meltdown of the Mutant Asset Bubble. It was in early October. Now we're just dealing with the fallout. The unemployment numbers are bad, yes. But things are improving. If we have no more shocks, we will move back to recovery. If the US can't borrow, there will be another shock, another plunge. Then things will improve again. THis is what is called a "W-shaped" recovery.

I answered it, TWICE. chicken is debating it but he has a point. My point is that after we have seen the rising GDP numbers, there will have already been people re-employed. The GDP number will be the result, not the cause of lower umemployment.

You can't ever figure out what you're even asking

There are economies in Asia doing quite well. They continue to import from the US, EU & Japan. Inventories around the globe are at historic and ridiculously low levels. Manufacturing will have to rise to fill orders once inventories are depleted and hiring will begin.

Beliewve it or not, there have been over 200 hedge fund startups in the US since March. They have all hired people.

Once the loss of jobs has declined dramatically, the consumer will start to spend. Hiring will follow.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 8, 2009 1:01 PM

" They continue to import from the US, EU & Japan."

Like I said--"Consumer Spending is 70% of our economy and with high unemployment where is the money coming from?" Are going to print money and hand it over for goods? If we do this would inflation be higher Dave?

" Inventories around the globe are at historic and ridiculously low levels. Manufacturing will have to rise to fill orders once inventories are depleted and hiring will begin."

I think you need to check the shipping ports around America. The ports are filling up with unsellable items (Cars, Goods and crap from China).

"Once the loss of jobs has declined dramatically, the consumer will start to spend. "

Then again Dave -- Where are the jobs coming from? To bring back employment levels from last year America need to create about 5 million jobs. How do we do that?

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: Return of The What at July 8, 2009 1:08 PM

Think a lot of inventory restocking has already happened, and was the major cause of the relative improvement in economic numbers in the past 4 months. I wonder how much is still left to come.
Also, labor is usually a lagging indicator.

It's a global cycle, like I just explained. the recovery has already begun outside of the US and it will eventually spread to here with the US exporting more goods because of the weak dollar.

Like I just said, once the employment numbers stabilize, consiumers will begin to spend.

In fact, the June auto numbers were better than expected and will be even better ijn July. Ford has record low inventories.

Police restore order in western China; 156 killed

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090706/ap_on_re_as/as_china_protest

RUMQI, China – Chanting "Strike down the criminals," hundreds of paramilitary police with shields, rifles and clubs took control of the streets Monday in the capital of western China's Muslim region, a day after the deadliest ethnic violence in decades.

State media said at least 156 people were killed in the unrest, which did not bode well for China's efforts to mollify long-simmering ethnic tensions between the minority Uighur people and the ethnic Han Chinese in Xinjiang — a sprawling region three times the size of Texas that shares borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan and other Central Asian countries.

Have to disagree with you again Dave, numbers declining at a slower rate is not contrary evidence to recovery but neither is it proof positive that recovery is around the corner.

At some point, the rebasing effect will mean that the year-on-year declines become positives but does not mean things are rosy again. You have to get back to at least the level of where things weren't bad to begin with.

"Employed by the embassies of two nations and identical except for [their view of the Brooklyn housing market and the general economic outlook], the Spies battle against each other with a variety of complicated (sometimes ridiculously so) [arguments regarding various financial scenarios]. The victor alternates roughly every other [post], and neither spy is portrayed as good or evil since both of them are equally ruthless towards each other. Even though they are pretty much identical, their habits and jobs aren't exactly the same: the White spy is sort of a [hedge fund manager], as in a good number of strips he's creating [financial instruments] for his [clients], while the Black spy is much more of an infiltrator, as he tries to [deride] the aforementioned [financial instruments frm Dave and his 'Gang of Four']."

Yep m4L Phillies are champs, respect due. But right now, going into the playoffs last year is most definitely over and the Philies are vulnerable. The division is weak. The Mets have collapsed (good reason - all of their best players except for one are hurt), but they're STILL only 4.5 games out! The Phillies are looking to sign Pedro, which was not the plan out of spring training, let's say.

Posted by: East New York at July 8, 2009 2:38 PM

East New York I've been a die hard Met fan since '73. I remember running home from PS 56 to catch the second inning of the World Series. That's when the World Series was played during the daytime, the good ole days. The New York Mets is and always be "My Team".

The Phillies are only 4 games in first place and The Mets have suck so far this year. When they get Pultz, Reyes and get everyone else healthy again I think August will be very interesting.

"The yanks are hanging tough this season but doesn't mean much if they can't beat the Red Sox."

True. We'll see what happens down the stretch. Everyone seems to be Red Sox-paranoid, but we're not too many seasons removed from sweeping those guys in 5 straight games, which everyone seems to have forgotten. The Sox have been the better team the last few seasons, no question. But they still can't match the Torre era for championships [Sox: 2004 and 2007; Yanks/Torre 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000. Guess what - that's one of the LESSER title stretches in Yankees history! In the big scheme of things, the Sox just aren't on the same page with the Yanks. Don't forget that.

I grew up on the Padres, and still see them whenever they're in NYC. No Mets or Yankees for me, thank you very much! Of the two, I'll take the Mets any day, for two reasons:

1. One side of my family is from Boston.
2. The National League plays real baseball.

This letter to the editor is for all you Yankees fans out there:

Those Baseball Fans Who Know Only Tears
Published: Tuesday, October 21, 2003

To the Editor:

Re ''Walking It Off,'' by Bob Greene (Op-Ed, Oct. 18):

Having grown up in the Bronx a few miles from Yankee Stadium, but living now a few minutes' walk from Wrigley Field, I must disagree with Mr. Greene's statement that ''nobody lost'' in Chicago and that what happened ''is not irretrievably melancholy.''

To deny the reality of loss is to miss the lesson of the Cubs. If a consumer product, scientific theory or political party consistently failed for 95 years, how many adherents would it retain? Yet millions of people around the world adhere to the Chicago Cubs.

To walk into Wrigley Field is to know that life inevitably means loss, that even the sunniest day has its shadows and ends in darkness, but that to persist and never surrender, even in the face of irretrievable melancholy, is heroic.

The question must be asked: Do the Yankees teach us any lesson as profound?

STUART ALTSCHULER
Chicago, Oct. 18, 2003

And Wrigley Field, with its Ivy outfield is one of the last great old-time ball parks.

I could walk there from many of the places I lived in Chicago.

In 1999 i went to opening day in Chicago, they were playing the Phillies. It got snowed out. I sat across the street in the Cubby Bear Lounge and the snow was so heavy i couldn't see the ball park!!!!!!

ENY. No one cares about your daddy's yankees. Welcome to the 21st century. Joe Torre works for the Dodgers. You haven't won in 10 years, and only the geriatrics on the team can even remember it. Your program is rotten to the core because of a history of neglecting internal development in favor of writing checks to finance your own all-star team. The Sox were better before they even started beating you, because they did the hard work to develop their program. You should worry.

ENY, I went to the Yankee game on Sunday and have to say I was very impressed with the new stadium. My expectations, despite the lofty pricetag, were very low. I was more than pleasantly surprised. Everything about it was wonderful. I didn't even mind coughing up $9 for a beer (plus tip), as I was on such a high admiring everything. I arrived 2 hours prior to game time to look around. There wasn't one minute one did not realize one was on the Yankees home turf, with all of the video tributes and pictures of the legends all over the place. Unfortunately, Citi Field is totally different; one can easily forget who the home team is when walking around there.

Hell, yes: if you focus on being the best EVERY year, you'll be the best ALMOST every year. 26, man, 26! No other franchise is even close.

Besides, how can you NOT like a team whose greatest player was the type of guy who'd awake up, eat a bunch of hot dogs, knock the boots with 3-4 chicks, head over to the ballpark, pitch a shutout and hit a home run? And, he'd probably get drunk at a bar after the game and KICK someone's ASS! Classic! NONE of your sissy teams have anyone like that!

DH, give Beckett his prop's. The man in the playoffs is as dominant as it gets currently. if not for him, Yanks win that series against Marlins. if we're talking about grooming talent, Minn, Atlanta, Oakland - those 3 are the benchmarks. It aint the Sox or other teams

Yeah, I know that Dave. Joe hated on the Yanks, and you supported that. Randolph hated on the Yanks too. So, I concluded that you are in agreement with Randolph AND Joe (at least on the Yanks). And, agreeing with these two "personalities" on ANYTHING is pretty scary when you really think about it.

Posted by: East New York at July 8, 2009 3:54 PM

ENY, I can't remember all the bench players for 1998 (except John Vander Wal) but 1984 looked something like this and includes a few more names Yankees fans love/hate:

OF: Bobby Brown, Champ Summers
INF: Mario Ramirez, Luis Salazar, Kurt Bevacqua
C: Bruce Bochy

SP: Eric Show, Mark Thurmond, Tim Lollar, Ed Whitson, Dave Dravecky
Bullpen: Andy Hawkins, Luis DeLeon, Greg Booker, Craig Lefferts, Goose Gossage

The '84 Padres starting rotation included three members of the John Birch Society (Dravecky, Thurmond, and Show, who died of a drug overdose), and 2B Wiggins died of AIDS.

They all brought tremendous joy to the city of San Diego (and to seven-year-old me).

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at July 8, 2009 3:59 PM

Even if you don't like the Yanks - you have to admire how George turned the team around from a POS team worth nothing into a billion dollar franchise.

People tend to forget baseball is a BUSINESS - championships or not in the last 10 years, the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 8, 2009 3:59 PM

HAAAAAAAAAAAA! I just read this on city-data board. i think nyc "cyclists" should ALL MOVE TO DETROIT TOO!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"While bike enthusiasts in most urban areas continue to have to fight for their place on the streets, Detroit has the potential to become a new bicycle utopia. It’s a town just waiting to be taken. With well less than half its peak population, and free of anything resembling a hill, the city and its miles and miles of streets lie open and empty, beckoning. And lately, whether it’s because of the economy or the price of gas or just because it’s a nice thing to do, there are a lot more bikers out riding."

*rob*

GO!!!! housing is CHEAP! GO NOW YOUNG (AND OLD) CYCLIST!

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 8, 2009 4:01 PM

Oh, and how could I forget backup 2B-SS Tim Flannery? Major FAIL on my part, as he was a real San Diego favorite. Dick Williams told him he was the worst player he'd ever seen in the major leagues, but he played his heart out, Pete Rose-style. Flannery was also a surfer and professional musician - perfect for San Diego.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 8, 2009 4:02 PM

HA! there's more. turns out it was from a NY TIMES article.

---
"Despite the press, survival here isn’t so hard. Businesses like the Wheelhouse and the Hub have already shown how well Detroit can work as a new business hothouse. With the legendarily affordable real estate and without needing to pay for car payments, gas or insurance, bicyclists could rebuild Detroit into a model of a two-wheeled economy. They could pass laws promoting bikes over cars and designate entire avenues motor-free zones, which, given the state of many of them now, wouldn’t be so much of a stretch." <

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 8, 2009 4:02 PM

if anyone is to complain about a NY team spending tons to try to win but dont win - you can choose between Knicks and Rangers. BTW, both owned by same owner - Dolan. Dolan hasn't seem the return (playoffs, championships,... wise) on his spending but I admire the man's willingness to keep spending, spending,.....

Joe, that was so funny I forgot to laugh. The real question is, who's helping you to read these posts?

On the other hand, six you are bonafide! Champ Summers!! Been a long time since I heard that name! One of the great baseball names of all time.

And I remember when Alan Wiggins died (also played of the Orioles). Very sad. I remember thinking what a jerk Eric Show (rhymes with "ow") was because of his John Birch membership.

Also played for the Yanks:

Bobby Brown
Ed Whitson
Andy Hawkins
Goose Gossage

Posted by: East New York at July 8, 2009 4:16 PM

Len Dykstra is a deadbeat. He recently operated a sports magazine that stiffed a BUNCH of writers and artists. He even stiffed some family members! Total lowlife.

Posted by: more4less at July 8, 2009 4:21 PM

Show must have had major psychological issues. He was a real competitor who took the game personally (in the worst way - he sat down on the mound after giving up Pete Rose's record-breaking hit).

Hawkins pitched the ugliest no-hitter of all time as a Yankee, losing 4-0. He remains the only Padres pitcher ever credited with a World Series win.

I recall that performance vividly as the nadir of the Yankees' struggles in the 1980s. We had players like Don Mattingly, Winfield (former Padre great), Don Baylor, Jack Clark, Rickey Henderson, Steve Kemp, etc. and we couldn't win ANYTHING! I remember thinking "We can't even win a f-king no hitter!!"

Soros Says China Will Help World Economy Recover From Recession
2009-07-08 19:07:22.830 GMT

July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire George Soros called China “a positive force” that will help drive growth as the world emerges from the current economic crisis.
“For China, the crisis is something affecting them from
the outside,” said Soros, 78, in a Bloomberg Radio interview. “They can stimulate their economy. They have reserves. They have a trade surplus. They will be one of the motors of the world economy.”

"“They can stimulate their economy. They have reserves. They have a trade surplus. They will be one of the motors of the world economy.”"

Yeah, China is scary because with the guvment they have they can just do what they want, and if they do it right, they'll kick our ass. We are so mired in sh*t.

Just follow the NYT for the past few weeks. They are building wind farms like crazy, TBone gave up. They regulate auto fuel efficiency. It takes us decades, they do it with the snap of a finger.

We've lost the auto industry, all we have left in this country that we make is airplanes and bombs. Maybe some high end medical and power gen equipment. And movies. We've lost it on nuke power.

What's gonna pull us out of this mess?

The only thing I hate about China is that it's damn hard to invest in the long term story if you're a small investor. I admit I bought some HAO today but with a lot of misgivings on how China runs the stock market. Maybe they can turn it over to us since we have turned over our mfg to them.

What was that about straw hats and nukes? Don't hear that too much anymore.

Posted by: denton at July 8, 2009 6:40 PM

denton...if you have a Schwab account or most likely any other decent broker, you can buy in Hong Kong with little effort. All the real companies are listed in HK. Even institutional investors don't bother playing in Shanghai & Shenzhen...the companies are crap and the valuations screwed up. Where there's a dual PRC/HK listing, the HK listed stock is always cheaper.

There are very few China companies listed here in the US that are worth looking at....maybe a half dozen...the rest are problematic from the standpoint of capital structure or just an unexciting business.

There is one US listed closed end fund that does buy actual A shares in China....CAF

There's a really great nuke play that we own...GSE Systems (GVP) which has huge market share around the world for training nuclear facility employees on the operation of the plant. As you can imagine, most of their business is now in Asia. The training is mandatory everywhere are retraining is always necessary.

The just started a big program here in the US with Southern Co who is going ahead with new reactors. It's kind of a university where Southern Co (So, also a buy...check the yield) will allow them to bring people from all over the world to enroll.

The stock has moved recently from high $5.00 rnage to high $6.00 range but we think its worth more than $8.00
