so yesterday i wake up at like 630 in the morning or so. totally oblivious to everything and was like ah, i must go feed the cat (supposed to feed him friday evening and sunday evening). i totally thought it was like 630ish at night and im walking to prospect heights and was like this is really strange there is NO ONE around, no cars, nothing. and the weather was chilly. i didnt realize it was early in the morning until i was on my way back home asking someone if it was sunday morning, sunday evening, or monday morning. this guy with two pitbulls of his own (like the only one on the street at that hour) was laughing at me be being like, oh ive been there hahaaha. crazy!

oh yeah and i was convinced the time on my cell phone was wrong. wtf?
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 6, 2009 9:25 AM
rob, the time shown on cell phones are now feed via a wireless signal from the wireless network clock (ie accurate) vs. those old bricks where the clock is in the phone and we occasionally have to change it when it runs a little fast/slow or we traveling to a diff time zone, etc. in others words, trust the time on the phone
Posted by: more4less at July 6, 2009 9:30 AM
Haha Rob - I've had a few days like that. A total time warp.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 9:31 AM
Speaking of trusting time - is there anyway to make automatic watches not stop running if you take them off for a day or so?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 9:35 AM
dh - shake the watch a few times to keep it going.
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 9:38 AM
DH, get a watch winder or get one of fancy watches with the power reserve
Posted by: more4less at July 6, 2009 9:38 AM
dh, it's still correct twice a day.

Hola,
I am back from a nice weekend in Ithaca. Lots of vineyard tastings, outside restaurants and waterfalls viewing AND 9 HOURS TRIP BACK HOME IN CRAZY TRAFFIC!!!!!! BAD ECONOMY AND PEOPLE NOT TRAVELING AS MUCH MY ASSSSS!!!!!
I went to a wedding on Saturday on the Cornell Campus (Beautiful by the way) and the groom was Cornell Undergrad, MIT and LSE Grad and Cornell Law. Needless to say, most of the guests (besides family) were from those schools. I felt pretty damn stupid around these people but everyone was super nice and friendly.
Overall a good time.

Greetings fellow PLUSAs. Unfortunately I am back and not lost at sea. I am swamped and won't have too much time for chit chat this morning, but had to comment on some new ads Brownstoner has. Seems he's going big time with American Apparel and a couple others. I think PLUSAs who post more than 50 comments per day should get a cut of the advertising profits since we're keeping the site hits up.
Speaking of the American Apparel ad, am I the only one who finds the brunette woman with the glasses quite fetching?
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 9:51 AM
ditto was all worked up over her last week, Biff.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 9:53 AM
Gotta love American Apparel billboards
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 9:58 AM
"ditto was all worked up over her last week, Biff."
Re-write:
"ditto would have liked to work her all over last week, Biff."
That plus Serena winning the women's singles title at Wimbledon (and the doubles title with Venus) must have also made Snappy happy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 10:01 AM
american apparel billboards are always the same thing, over and over and over. a stoned and slutty looking barely legal chick.

I never see any Asian or Latin guys and no blacks for that matter as well in the American Apparel ads. I just clicked on the ad and NONE. Just ugly skinny lame white hipsters.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:03 AM
"Just ugly skinny lame white hipsters."
Just appealing to their target demographic.

Biif, I commented on the new ads a few weeks back- papa johns was the first one that made me think Mr B is really stepping up his game at OUR expense. but as for 50 posts a day, I think that would be a record even for the most dedicated PLUSA.
Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 6, 2009 10:10 AM
randi, why do you now have to post as "Return of Randolph?"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:12 AM
We didn't make it until about 5:45 on Fri. I looked for you (and your car) but didn't see you. Lots of red-headed kids when we were there. We had a nice canoe ride down from Tinicum to Pt. Pleasant. How was your weekend (and when were you at Dilly's)?
Posted by: slopefarm at July 6, 2009 10:15 AM
its the new me DIBS. i'm gonna try to be nice.
Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 6, 2009 10:16 AM
I was at Dilly's around 2:30. I didn't bring the 442 b/c I knew we were going to get showers. Had it out all day Sat & Sunday though.
There was one car there with NY plates when I was there but I somehow knew that couldn't be you in the wife beater!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:17 AM
But randi, you told us you were a black woman a few weeks ago and this profile says "Male"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:20 AM
You're right Dave. It doesn't matter how long I live in Brooklyn (23 years and counting). I'm never going to rock that look.
Posted by: slopefarm at July 6, 2009 10:22 AM
"a stoned and slutty looking barely legal chick."
Rob, you say that like it's a bad thing.
Randi, I like the new handle and attitude. When you say he's stepping up his game at our expense, what do you mean? Posting more controversial topics? (Sorry if I'm even slower than usual today; I'm still in vacation mode).

biff, i mean making some serious $$$ by letting us run wild on the OT and baiting What and others with all this race/class BS. i am sure the money brought in by the likes of american apparel and papa johns beats running local development ads, right?

Did they have a duvet???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:39 AM
i got $5 that rob doesn't know what a duvet is.
Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 6, 2009 10:42 AM
Thanks Randi, I figured that's what you meant.
"i got $5 that rob doesn't know what a duvet is."
I'm guessing he thinks it's a fixture similar in design to a toilet that is straddled for bathing the genitals and the posterior parts.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 10:46 AM
wrong. that's a bidet.
Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 6, 2009 10:46 AM
Shoot, he beat me to it!
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 10:46 AM
come on rob, think.....
Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 6, 2009 10:49 AM
Rob, g'morning!
That is a good guess.
A duvet is a kind of slipcover for a comforter. It is bed linen.
Also, fyi, a bidet is not really a toilet but rather a personal hygine fixture.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 10:50 AM
oh. well whatever those toilet contraptions are, i think they are absurd. how exactly is spraying water on your dainty parts , i cant construct the sentence im trying to ask :-/ ah well, bidets are just ridiculous. it's not like soapy water comes out of them right? so youre still dirty down there when you think about it. now if someone could make a bathroom contraption to deal with poo mist, that would be great. similar to how smokeless ashtrays work.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 6, 2009 10:50 AM
rob, don't you remember that video that was taken of those Asshats walking through Target asking if anyone knew where they sold the duvets???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:52 AM
Rob, in the days of yore, especially in Europe, a bidet was seen as a good alternative to a bath. It just washed the nether regions, mostly of women, mostly after sex or during their "time of the month". Aren't you sorry you asked?
PS: also excellent for washing babies' hinies.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 10:57 AM
sam, I never knew how to spell "hinies." Thank you.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 6, 2009 10:59 AM
Bidets are great. A lot of guys I know think they feel terrific.
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 11:10 AM
After living in WT for a year, I took a walk in Marine Park near where I grew up. I gotta say, after using Prospect Park excusively for months, the Marine Park athletic field seemed so small! It's just a small part of the actual 2000+ acres but it's what we always referred to as "the park." Between Olmstead's brilliant designs and the sheer scale Prospect Park has increased my appetite for visual aesthetics. I may have to visit the larger part of MP, the "creek" and walk the nature trail before I give my final opinion!
Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at July 6, 2009 11:13 AM
Hey Everyone
anyone else bummed they couldn't see the fireworks this year?
we went to the pier in Red Hook and all we saw were the wack-a$$ fireworks from Jersey City, not the ones from Macy's!!! - oh well - there were lots of people in Red Hook though waiting for the fireworks so it was kinda funny when we all realized we wouldn't be seeing them this year
Dibs- I remember that Target video - it was hilarious
Posted by: gemini10 at July 6, 2009 11:15 AM
bidets are good, they used to be considered "French luxe" in new houses. They save on toilet paper, so that makes them green.
Has anyone tried the new waterless urinals? That's the future!
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 11:16 AM
What do the waterless urinals use instead? Is it just re-circulated water?
Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at July 6, 2009 11:18 AM
"Bidets are great. A lot of guys I know think they feel terrific."
Why is it that all of a sudden the song "Tainted Love" pops to mind?
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 11:24 AM
I thought you were kidding Rob, with the mixing of the duvet/bidet thing.
I love bidets. After birthing my first baby (do I sound circa 1870?), I thought one would be an excellent idea (for any of you men out there who don't get this, don't try to picture it. It isn't pleasant. And the help in using one lasts for several weeks post-birth because tp is simply too painful). And I was right, it was. And Rob, you keep soap or a cleanser on the bidet, so one is not still "dirty down there" following. Oh, and they are GREAT for cleaning little kids bums, feet, hands etc. Right at their height.
I sound like an ad.
Posted by: Nokilissa at July 6, 2009 11:24 AM
im sorry but how do bidets cut down on toilet paper usage? you still need to wipe yourself dry unless you wanna walk around with swamp ass all day. how much pressure comes out of these things anyway?
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 6, 2009 11:27 AM
In the new green certified highrises such as 4 Times Square the toilets use captured rainwater and the urinals use no water.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 11:27 AM
Chemical fluid that seals the fixture by floating on top of urine, which just flows away. No flush
Posted by: cmu at July 6, 2009 11:27 AM
When I was in Rome 2 months ago, son called me into the bathroom claiming flush did not work, you had to hold the handle down constantly and even then it was spraying water in a strange way. Turned out it was a combo toilet-bidet with two different handles for the two functions. Bidet spray tended to splash out of fixture, so result of son's mis-flush would not have been agreeable to Rob
Posted by: cmu at July 6, 2009 11:31 AM
Rob, you just use a towel. Same as after a shower. Presumably one is pristine following the use of soap! :)
Posted by: Nokilissa at July 6, 2009 11:34 AM
I fear if Rob ever comes into contact with a bidet, he might mistake it for a drinking fountain.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 11:34 AM
Rob - There're controls on the bidet so you can regulate how strong the jet is (& how much hot/cold water you want.)
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 11:39 AM
^^^^^^^^^^^^
or even worse, he might mistake a drinking fountain in a public park for a bidet!!
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 11:39 AM
cmu: where have you seen the new urinals?
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 11:42 AM

I think we are being a little mean to Rob.
What would we do without him?
In terms of the fireworks, I was out of town but I heard that they were not visible from the usual locations in Brooklyn such as the promenade and Fulton Ferry Park.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 11:46 AM
It would be worse if Rob came into contact with a duvet and used it as a bidet.
Posted by: Expert Textpert at July 6, 2009 11:46 AM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 11:49 AM
1 Bryant Park? Is that the new Durst building?
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 11:51 AM
I read that fireworks were moved to the Hudson to honor anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery - 400 yrs.
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 11:59 AM
sam, yeah, that's the one.
Posted by: denton at July 6, 2009 12:00 PM
denton, that's the second tallest building in NYC now, after the Empire State Building (built in 1929!)
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 12:01 PM
sam, the fireworks were visible from Brooklyn Heights, including the Promenade, much to my surprise. They must have had multiple locations, like when they were done on the East River. I think they were launched somewhere off the southern tip of Manhattan.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 12:02 PM
Is 1 Bryant Park the new BoA building that sporadically showers broken glass upon people on 42nd St when it gets windy?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 12:03 PM
No people in today's ROTD
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 12:05 PM
Biff: really?
The paper said the fireworks barges were to be located between 23rd Street and 59th Street. In years past they have been right in front of the promenade.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 12:05 PM
sam, iirc I toured a large building in Manhattan last year that had them. did not use, but they look just like a regular one with only a hint of a fluid surface, and no flush lever.
Posted by: cmu at July 6, 2009 12:06 PM
"Is 1 Bryant Park the new BoA building that sporadically showers broken glass upon people"
At least they'll be free of pee-mist.
Posted by: cmu at July 6, 2009 12:07 PM
sam, definitely. I saw the whole show. It was south of the Promenade (and West toward Jersey). I suppose it's like when they generally advertised the show in midtown on the East River but had an identical display down by the Promenade.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 12:11 PM
I was able to see, from Clinton Hill, fireworks - saw two sets of them (guess the smaller one is the Jersey City one G10 referenced)
Posted by: more4less at July 6, 2009 12:14 PM
It was 400 years since the Asshat Henry Hudson sailed in. That's why the Fireworks was over there! God Damn Retards!

"i am sure the money brought in by the likes of american apparel and papa johns beats running local development ads, right?"
Right. Also explains why Mr. Brownstoner would never ban The What, easily his most provocative poster.
Posted by: East New York at July 6, 2009 12:21 PM
What, just so you know, I saw your apology to cobblehiller and me last week but I was on vacation and not commenting. No hard feelings at all and thanks for posting it.
On another note, as I was watching on TV the many tributes to Michael Jackson and outpouring of emotions from people all over the world as they grieved his passing and celebrated his music, I was wondering if some of those here who, subsequent to my FGVOTD tribute to MJ, were questioning his impact on the entertainment industry (and beyond) and implying he was irrelevant might have changed their opinion at least just a little bit.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 12:34 PM
Nope, Biff. I loved a quote I think was from Gail Collins about the coverage, "While media were busy announcing that M.J. was still dead, Sarah Palin..."
Posted by: Arkady at July 6, 2009 12:39 PM
As for MJ, there are plenty of soldiers coming home dead and they get nary a drop of ink. 10 days of MJ all day is very spooky. And why do they need Al to be their spokesperson.
Posted by: DeLepp at July 6, 2009 12:42 PM
DeLepp, I agree with you about the pathetic lack of coverage soldiers (and Afghani and Iraqi civilians) killed in action are getting. That's been raised as an issue for a long time now and was one (of many) criticisms directed towards the Bush administration from the start of both invasions. MJ didn't exactly knock the coverage off the front pages.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 12:52 PM
Biff, true enough. But I think this grieving period for MJ doesn't seem healthy for us as a nation. He was a genius for his time, but 10 days and counting? Is it because it makes people feel as if they are part of a community (of grievers)? Maybe it's just the total saturation that bothers me. Hell, even nightline posted super ratings last week. WSJ mentioned last week he was the last "celebirty". When Anna Nicole Smith died there was more ink/bytes/tears wasted for a nut then a past president dying.
Posted by: DeLepp at July 6, 2009 1:02 PM
DeLepp, I'm hoping it will all be over after the official memorial service(s) get saturation coverage. Otherwise 10 days and counting might turn into some longer time period and counting...
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 6, 2009 1:09 PM
I grew up watching MJ. I saw him on Ed Sullivan. I think Diana Ross introduced him. The Jackson Five had great songs. He kept writing hit songs and creating great choreography. I am very sad thinking about his death. But after all, fifty is not all that young especially when compared to the 19-year-old soldiers killed in Iraq and elsewhere. We can't all expect to live as long as Robert McNamara who died in his sleep at age 93 yesterday. he is remembered by my generation for masterminding a senseless and immoral war in SE Asia.
I believe MJ began to think of himself as Jesus (as pictures in one of those old holy cards surrounded by little children). Most of the world began to see him as a creepy phantom of the opera/child molester. No wonder he needed drugs to sleep. In any case, RIP, his music and dance will outlive him and us and the controversies. McNamara will only be remembered for his idiotic war.
Posted by: sam at July 6, 2009 1:13 PM
Chicken, are you out there? Still going to Sycamore this evening?
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 6, 2009 1:15 PM
DeLepp, I would surmise the extended coverage is a combination of the fact he was such a compelling personality for a variety of reasons and the fact his music was extremely uplifting; not necessarily in a spiritual sense, but in the sense many people find it difficult not to want to jump up and dance when they hear it. And, not to sound too hokey, but I think the current economic conditions (including home foreclosures, lost jobs, declining wealth, etc.) have made people yearn for something to uplift them.
sam, speaking of McNamara, did you ever see the movie The Fog of War? It's a must see, especially for those like you who are familiar with McNamara.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 6, 2009 1:16 PM

There was an article in the WSJ last week about salaries for athletes. The gist was, if we really did value service professions like we say we do, those salaries would not be the case. The American public is a selfish one...most people think the only goal in life is to have fun, and that's it.

Afternoon PLUSAs! Hope everyone had a great weekend.
I had the most humoruous subway ride today. A guy was preaching to us at the top of his lungs. Some of the gems he laid out:
"I used to be on crack. To get it, I stole from my momma, my sister - I stole my landlord's tv and vcr - TWICE! If I can do that for crack, I can do this for Christ!"
"If you don't listen, you'll wind up in hell. It's like the people of New Orleans who didn't listen when they were told that the levees were going to break. They weren't told the levees *may* break. NO! It was a sure thing. They were told, the levees *are* gonna break. FO SHIZZLE MY NIZZLE!"
"When you die you can't take it with you. When Bill Gates dies, Microsoft will still be here. When Jay-Z dies, the 40-40 Club will still be here. And when Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson dies, G G G G G-UNIT will still be here folks!"

Two questions:
1) Someone suggested putting coffee grinds in potted plants to promote their growth. Has anyone else ever heard of this?
2) Is it just my imagination or is it more often than not the wind in the morning is blowing from the Northwest? It seems I am almost always cycling against the wind on my way to work as I cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
Thanks in advance for your answers, even the snarky ones.

So today I went to the grocery store. Spending about a half hour loading up my cart with my carefully selected items and some kick *ss sales stuff that I use regularly. I'm in such a great mood.
Get to the register.
Unload my stuff.
Help and old lady unload her cart (hard to reach down and in).
Wait for it all to be rung up.
$149 blah blah blah...
Open my wallet.
It's empty!
Huh?
Oh right! I took out my cash, credit card and debit card and stuck it in my super cute little clutch purse when we went to a party this weekend.
Mother !@)#(&!@(*#$&R(!*@&E)(!@#*)((!!!!!
"Miss, I'm really sorrybut I have left my money and card at home in another bag."
Pissy grunt snort and roll of the eyes as I do the walk of shame out of the store empty handed.
Boo Hoo.

Biff, that's because there are program bots that search through websites for email addresses typed in conventional ways and written by programmers for those mass spam email companies. They pick up your email and then unload a whole crap of Spam to your email address. BTW they pick up sentences with the words "dot" as well. Creative people put like a few spaces in between not to get their email address picked up.

What, I never said the man was a man of God. I said he was a guy preaching to us. I'll be the first to agree that anyone holding a bible and spouting verses etc isn't always a man of God. Whether or not he is right about what he said is a matter of opinion and in time will bear itself out :)

Biff, re: the coffee it really depends on the soil you start out with. Most soil around here benefits well from it.
You could do the whole soil testing kit to find out what it needs but yeah, we always added coffee grinds to our compost pile and it makes for a really rich soil.

What,
I'll bite. This is just me, but I don't think I've ever suggested you be banned. I also don't think DIBS -- your eprceived main nemesis -- has, either. You and I have sparred a lot, but usually on a topic. Sometimes I try to call you on what I perceived to be gaps in the logic of your arguments, and I find it frustrating sometimes when you just won't do it because, it seems, you think all your arguments are self-evidently logical and anyone who can't see it is, well, in your words an R word or an A word. Sometimes, I take the bait and try to press really hard, because, regardless of the merits of your views, I think you get away with sloppiness. Sometimes, I just don't bother because I know that you will counterattack, but not debate in a meaningful way. Way, way back, when we were new to each other, I expressed some concerns about whether some of your posts threatened real violence and I was worried you had gone beyond puffery. I don't see it that way anymore.
My take, fwiw, is that you probably perceive more people wanting you banned than is actually the case. I think that is because you have a hard time distinguishing argument and disagreement with your views from actual attacks and hatred. It is probably true that a lot of the posters you don't respect or think much of have a similar view towards you. You've gone pretty agressively on the attact, and with seemingly a lot of personal venom towards a number of posters and teh community as a whole. (For a while, you were gleefully predicting that I would not be able to get an appraisal to support my refi. Now why would you wish that on me? I don't wish harm to you. And btw, you were wrong -- the appraisal was quite strong.) As a result, you have made yourself quite a target. Also, you have put you persona at issue so heavily that some on this blog miss you just because they want to unravel the mystery -- if there is one -- about who you are and what makes you tick. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
So, in the end, if you want to dish it out, be ready to take it. This is a blog, and I don't believe in banning unless there is a serious reason. But I think the better course is to actually pay attention to the arguments of those disagreeing with you and, if you think they are wrong, explain why, with logic and data that actually accounts for the opposing view. When pressed on logic, you usually retreat behind a barricade. I don't want you banned, but I am not sure at this point that I would miss you if you dropped off the blog.

Maybe the dr opening & shutting might just give it enough movemt to keep watch going.

Of all the words in the English (or should I say Queen's English) Dictionary, "Idiot" and "Moron" are mild. Does someone really deserve to be banned for using THOSE two words. Come on now!

I would have been the first one to ask that dave be banned if he used the N-word as an insult. He didn't- he referred to it to compare it to another shameful word. He did not call anyone the N-word. He did not use the N-word as a label. Frankly I would have spelled out the word I was called when I talked about what I experienced being in an interracial marriage, except I was sure it would bring down a firestorm of misplaced rage from you on my head too.
Slopefarm wrote a very honest and also respectful post to you, What. No one wants you banned but most of us are are tired of getting bludgeoned by your anger if we disagree with you. Some people are willing to let anything you say slide- I'm not. Just read it. Summer jobs have been disappearing for years. Not cool internships but the more run of the mill after school/summer type jobs doing pizza delivery or working in a store. People don't like to admit this but it's ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. That's the truth, IMF policies that ruin people's lives in other countries also take away jobs right here. I don't blame the immigrants (criminals), they're just looking for a better life. No it's the white-guilt feeling privelaged liberals that want to sell out the poor and the young here in this country so that we can have open borders.

Just a hint. On Etsy, search for 'cufflinks' then filter by price high to low and zero in on your price range. It's the only was to sort them without making yourself crazy.

You'd be surprised at how many "beneath me" jobs I held while in HS and college.
Not trying to place all the blame on illegals but, I don't see white teenage girls in those jobs these days.
Could it be that parents are making their kids do stuff that would enhance a college application instead? Maybe now kids DO think these jobs are beneath them. We'd become quite the indulgent society until this economy hit and set us all straight with a hard lined reality check.
I don't know. Point is, I think there are a lot of factors in place one of them certainly is the illegal immigrant factor.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 6, 2009 4:34 PM
I really don't think that illegal immigrants have taken jobs away from Americans who are interested in working. I do believe that some line has to be drawn when a larger corporation hires them so that they don't have to pay benefits. Many restaurants and other small businesses could not exist around the country without them.
The whole system is f*&*&ed up as to how to deal with the millions that are here. Did you know that in 2007, Mexicans working in the US sent back $26B to mexico.

I totally disagree. These days a LOT of families aren't in the same financial position they were in when buying kids closets full of designer clothes, gaming systems and cars were the norm. Whether they had the money to begin with or were just allowed to rack up gobstopping amounts of debt by lenders is still in question.
Now, I bet a lot of teens wouldn't mind scooping ice cream at the DQ or delivering pizza. I'm serious too. I personally know a lot of parents who have closed the cash tap and the kids are NOT finding summer jobs. There are 5 families on this block alone who have become single income families. They all have kids and essentially they have been told if they want money they need to work.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 6, 2009 4:42 PM
The day started with posts about why the media covers Michael Jackson instead of dead soldiers and ends with 100 cufflink posts interspersed between 20 illegal immigration posts! I'm too lazy to actually count...that's randi's job.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 6, 2009 4:43 PM
Illegal immigrants are not the real problem. I worked some godawful summer jobs but I can just see the look on the faces of my friend's kids if anyone suggested they clean up vomit in the bathroom of a holiday inn or make the beds up, or scrub the toilet bowl out as part of the job.
Most summer jobs are low pay and not that wonderful. So kids today don't want to do them- they have "standards".

"Could it be that parents are making their kids do stuff that would enhance a college application instead? Maybe now kids DO think these jobs are beneath them."
I think there's some truth to that, THL. Working in MickeyD's don't cut it on the college app, you need to go to Honduras and build some houses and sh*t, for community service, even if you've never picked up a saw in your life. So it's only the poor kids that don't have the air fare to Honduras that work in McDonald's.
Then again I heard from the street a while ago that some kids will do food but not fried food.
But I've also heard a few employers see value in kidz dealing with, and getting dumped on, by the general public.
So, to cover all bases, I made sure my kid worked one summer at Subway's on 5th Ave, and another summer went to Colombia for the summer, you know, for the community service credits.

For all those who think I should go back to "the motherland which spewed me out.", this only proves my point. The most racist rhetoric in the immigration debate is coming from HISPANIC SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS. Groups like La raza (google the plan of San Diego) are nothing but HISPANIC KLU KLUX KLAN type groups that english-speaking "gringos" need to learn about. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, certain LABOR UNIONS (Yes Dave)and these racist pro-immigartion lobbies are what's behind this, not hardworking immigrants (who are criminals for crossing international borders illegally, much like Bush was wrong when he invaded Iraq.

complete bs that illegal immigrants are taking away jobs from permanent residents. if permanent residents show up to apply for those jobs, no way an english speaking, legal applicant would lose out to an non-english speaking, illegal applicant. those jobs are crappy, low paying, long hours,.. and most of the time, that's the only ones these illegal immigrants can get. if you're permanent resident and you need to take one of those crappy jobs, you f'd up big a long time ago and hence why you have to settle for this kind of crappy job.

Furthermore, thousands of unsuspecting American Hispanics are part of this conspiracy in organizations like La Raza and MECHA. Sorry, I'm unconvinced.

M4L- It's kids that take these jobs. Kids with no resumes. Those are the jobs I used to do when in HS and College. I'm telling you, I have 4 teenagers on my block that can NOT find summer jobs and there parents are NOT giving them money because there's none to give. One went to stay with his gandmother and she's paying him some money to help her fix stuff around the house. Tell me how many kids you know want to go down south to help grandma for the summer?
There are a lot more people looking for these low-end low-pay jobs and they aren't out there. People didn't worry about i so much when a lot of folks could bank roll their kids lifestyles now, it's different.

Parents who do that are not doing the right thing. Rich kids need to develop a work ethic too. Isn't it funny how conservatives are always telling 'the poor' that they need to develop a work ethic? So does Muffy, it appears.
My kid had to do production work at my biz on weekends since she was 11. That's on your knees, manual labor, immigrant style work. She hated it. So I told her to go to college if she didn't want to do it. Soon as she was 14, she had to work every summer, either something we got her or in the nabe.
And while she's currently unemployed, she has a tremendous work ethic.

Groups like Mecha and La Raza have promoted ideas od Aztlan which the Nazi's tried to use to their advantage to convince Mexicans to stand up for the "Brown Race" and kill white americans in border areas during WWII. Could you imagine if a group of whites called itself "the Race" and applied for gov't funding and got it! Calling white people names like Euro-trash, etc,. just continues to prove my point. I say SOME, particularly groups LEADING this Pro-Illegal Alien agenda are racist and you retort with Euro-trash, go back to your country, etc. It's funny you think you're being pro-Hispanic when you're BEING MANIPULATED BY A BUNCH OF RICH WHITES WHO WANT CHEAP LABOR! A permanant brown underclass, quite an acheivement. So while the Republicrats run game on you I will fight for the rights of ALL AMERICANS regardless of race, the right to not compete with slave labor whether it's here or in China.

Couldn't agree more Denton.
hat's a sure fire way to have them get into trouble later. I hate to go to an Oprah reference but she's had a few shows regarding over indulgent 'never say no' parents and the after effects it's had on them and the kids. The kids assume that their starting pay salaries are going to afford them the lifestyle they're accustom to.
It's also causes a lot of guilt and resentment on the parents end once they realize that the kids have no idea how to manage money and have now as young adults begun to get themselves into debt that the enablers oops I meant parents are, of course, cleaning up for them but getting angry that they have to. Crazy.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 6, 2009 5:27 PM
THL, my point is if permanent residents (ie the kids you're talking about) applied to those jobs when the opening popped up, they most likely would've beated out the non-english speaking illegal immigrants. The fact they didn't apply when the opennings popped up, they cant blame the immigrants for taking them (ie you can't claim to have lost something when you chose to NOT to be in mix).

Joe does make a reasonable point, and his conclusions aren't entirely out of mainstream thinking, but his focus on La Raza and Mecha (which in my high school in San Diego promoted innocuous things like after school tutoring and applying to college - oh the horror!) is out of line. Yes, there are extreme elements in those groups. Joe makes them out to be some sort of Mexican al-Qaeda, but like al-Qaeda, they're a tiny minority.

The problem isn't illegal immigration - the problem is making it illegal for people who live in this country to work.

What,
I belatedly heard your call. I was dealing with work, so just catching up. Yeah, Joe spewed some garbage. I can't speak for anyone else, but sometimes I find it best to ignore a jerk like that. He said some bigoted sh*t just to put himself in the middle of a brownstoner kerfuffle. But I don't think it shows that the brownstoner community is engaged in an exercise in race/class warfare if they don't actively jump all over a comment like that. Seriously, I imagine there have been times in your life when you experienced bigoted slights, or heard bigotry directed to others, and you decided not to dignify it with a response rather than go after it directly. Doesn't make you a bigot.

joe- aren't you assuming What had a father?
I'm not saying you don't have some points-but this country needs to be much more realistic about immigration, and much more compassionate. The illegals I see have the worst, lowest paying jobs- not because they want them. No one else does. They had a contractor gut reno the house next door to me for section 8 residents. Those guys worked under truly horrible conditions including not one single dust mask. Try telling a teenager he can work for minimum wage in filthy and unsafe conditions with no, even minimal protection from 7 am to 9 pm. Lets see how many jump at the chance.
And if they were legalized, they would pay taxes- as it is, even as illegals they pay money- they buy food, rent housing, buy clothes and gas. A lot of small businesses who do pay taxes, depend on them. But by going after them, we spend millions in pursuit, we lose revenue we could be gettig if they were legal, and any number of other less than beneficial results.

You know those empty factories in Williamsburg and Greenpoint have a lot more to do with why there are no jobs than illegal immigrants. I just want everyone who wants to to be able to make a life for themself, no matter who they are or where they're from. De-industrialization is making this harder and harder to do. People in this country need to make things again. Illegal immigration is a bad sympton of a race to the bottom but it's not the cause, the race (to the bottom) itself is the cause and that affects everyone here.

"I have some MAJOR issues w/ the Catholic Church but I don't think the Monsignor over at my old parish is in on some kind of conspiracy."
Have you asked gay men and women in California who want gay marriage what they think about that? Prop 8 wasn't a conspiracy of religious organizations to deny rights to gays? Seems it was to me.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 6, 2009 5:44 PM
The What,
Which statement did you think was hypocritical? Both reflect my actual views.
Are you accusing me of being hypocritical because I am a legal immigrant who supports legal immigration, but can see both sides of the argument re illegal immigration?
I can't see how that is inconsistent at all.
Or were you assuming I am a racist and that I oppose all immigration? That would hardly be consistent with my own status.

bxgrl - it's amazing how truly skilled some of those 'day laborers' that contractors hire.
Out in Farmingville, LI - there is a huge illegal immigrant population of day laborers who are taking steps to unionize. About 5 years ago there was a string of assaults where people would pick them up from the 7-11 parking lot where they gather and take t hem to an abandoned building and beat them within an inch of their lives.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 6, 2009 5:45 PM
What-
There's a big distinction. We are not discussing immigrants. We are discussing individuals who are here illegally.
You talk about class warfare. How about the lower class Americans (you know, the ones in the ghetto) who are being let go and replaced by illegals because they don't have to be paid minimum wage, they can't join a union, they can't collect unemployment, they can't get disability insurance should they be injured at work.
What about that class warfare?

"There are 5 families on this block alone who have become single income families. They all have kids and essentially they have been told if they want money they need to work."
So, they've got to come up with a way to make money. ANY type of job will do, or some money-making idea of their own. What makes these kids so special that they shouldn't have to apply themselves even if it is tough to find work? Scapegoating ANYONE is just an excuse.
"those jobs are crappy, low paying, long hours,.. and most of the time, that's the only ones these illegal immigrants can get. "
M4L is right. Americans don't want the lowest-paying jobs, and won't work for the $ ilegal immigrants will to get that job.
"I'm telling you, I have 4 teenagers on my block that can NOT find summer jobs and there parents are NOT giving them money because there's none to give."
Two words: Car wash.
"How about the lower class Americans (you know, the ones in the ghetto) who are being let go and replaced by illegals because they don't have to be paid minimum wage, they can't join a union, they can't collect unemployment, they can't get disability insurance should they be injured at work."
I don't buy it. "Lower class Americans" have MANY advantages illegal immigrants don't. If they find themselves competing for the LOWEST level of jobs, with illegal immigrants, and haven't acquired the skills to get ahead, I can't feel sorry for them.

ENY:
So let me get this straight, you say:
"So, they've got to come up with a way to make money. ANY type of job will do, or some money-making idea of their "own. What makes these kids so special that they shouldn't have to apply themselves even if it is tough to find work? Scapegoating ANYONE is just an excuse."
"If they find themselves competing for the LOWEST level of jobs, with illegal immigrants, and haven't acquired the skills to get ahead, I can't feel sorry for them."
Two words: Car wash."
----------------------------------------------------------
Contradicting yourself. In one breath you say 'what makes these kids so special they shouldn't apply themselves'. In the next you laud them for trying to get low end jobs and not having acquired the skill sets. Then your grand idea is a Car Wash?
YES! Great idea. that's exactly how they'll learn great skills that are real resume builders.
How can you possibly be serious? You'd rather see someone that is in the country illegally, earning the money and sending it out of the country without contributing taxes like you and I get a job delivering pizzas, busing tables or washing dishes or any of those other jobs in a restaurants kitchen instead of some American H.S. kid who is trying to make some money cause his family is strapped. Or how about the guy that got laid off when his company folded, his unemployment is is running out and delivering pies sounds better than not having ZERO dollars coming in to feed his family.
The long held excuse for letting them come and stay in the country was because American's don't want those jobs. You know, that is partially true. Most don't. However, there are those that do. I did. When I was a kid those were the jobs I worked. My first job? Individually wrapping muffins in a bakery factory and filling palate orders.
Here's where the hard truth comes out...I along with 15 or so others were let go citing cut backs. Thing is we were replaced by illegals. I know, because one of the old timer bakers that had been let go had them busted for hiring undocumented workers. They closed down 3 months later. I didn't know, I was 15 I only found out later when my parents explained what had happened. I did know that I was busting my hump in a hot bakery trying to earn money that summer and then bam, I'm out.
There's still the 'that jobs beneath me' factor. The overindulged kid contingent, and as I stated above now college is so competitive that most kids need things other than McD's fry guy or delivery guy on their applications like major volunteer work.
And for the record. I didn't say that illegals WERE the problem. I said they were a PART of it. However, you'd be naive to say that illegals and those who employ them don't contribute to the problem.
No, better to hate on the out of work Americans and defend people who are here illegally. Good job you're very P.C.

What,
I can't for the life of me figure out why you went off on me. In my last comments to you I agreed with you that jfb's posts were bigoted and offered my rationale as to why I didn't bother to call him on it. I did not accuse you of racism -- quite the contrary, I made clear that I was not -- but you react as if I did. My only point, with which you seem to disagree, is that it is not class warfare not to jump down the throat of someone who makes a bigoted remark. There are many ways to respond, including not bothering.
It seems pointless to engage in a discussion with you because whenever a conversation has even the slightest chance of moving off square one into a real dialogue, you sabotage it with a gratuitous attack. For all the bravado, I think you operate from a fearful position, fearful of taking the risks required to have a meaningful dialogue and to actually listen and comprehend the positions and reasoning of those with whom you disagree, to the point where you actually make enemies of people who even agree with you on some things.
So go ahead, keep me on mute. I tried to have a dialogue, but dialogue really isn't what you want. I am always happy to converse with you if it is a real conversation, but I am not going to keep beating my head against a wall.

What’s great about a Bathroom Bidet Sprayer? It's great because it let's you win. With a Bathroom Bidet Sprayer you win in so many ways if it was a woman I’d marry it. First off you win by saving money and what in these times is better than that, well ok a bailout may be better but get in line. With these you almost don't need toilet paper anymore. By almost eliminating the need for toilet paper the savings are immediate and long lasting. Not saying you have to give up toilet paper, you can still use it and even buy the soft stuff without feeling guilty because you will be using so little. Next you win by giving yourself some healthy side benefits namely a lessening of hemorrhoids, should you have them, and the virtual elimination of rectal itch. Now we move onto the fact that you are helping the environment by lowering the amount of toilet paper used and therefore manufactured which saves water, electricity, and pollution. Now there is the hygiene factor and unless you think wiping your hands off with a dry paper towel is cleaner than washing them then you get the point. I think Dr. Oz on Oprah said it best: "if you had pee or poop on your hand, you wouldn't wipe it off with paper, would you? You'd wash it off" There is the convenience of having such a handy means of washing up with after which at times, say after that big burrito you had at lunch, can get a might messy. That is the main reason why stand alone conventional bidets were invented but they are too expensive and don’t even work as well as the Hand Bidet Sprayer. Lastly there is the least practical but potentially the most influential reason of all……it just feels good. Cleaner, fresher, rejuvenating even. Can you imagine not brushing you teeth after a big meal? I can’t, and I can’t imagine just wiping with dry toilet paper and leaving it at that.....shudder. This is the best thing since the toilet was invented, give it a try. www.bathroomsprayers.com

My 2 cents re illegal immigration - Reagan had the chance to fix it and chose instead to pass it on to future generations.
All I can is that this is just one more issue which undermines trust in how our society operates. One more straw on that camel's back.
Whatever the "truth" may be, the fact that millions of legal immigrants and citizens PERCEIVE that they are following the rules and getting screwed while someone else gets a "free ride" is just more fuel for the fire that is smoldering.
Add to that resentment over banker bailouts and it won't be a surprise to see more middle class choose to opt out of what used to be called the rat race and instead go for a smaller nicer lifestyle that, incidentally, will kick in fewer taxes. Just some thoughts...
