The FGVOTD comes to you from The Philippines where
1,500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines do a choreographed rendition of “Thriller”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMnk7lh9M3o&feature=related
See the other videos where they dance to “Jump” and “Can’t Touch This”
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 9:17 AM
Those are some smooth criminals.
Posted by: etson at July 2, 2009 9:21 AM
Oh, and when you watch the "Jump" choreography, this is an all-male prison.

How do they decide which of them get to go into the smaller dance section?
Posted by: the chicken at July 2, 2009 9:25 AM
Dave, you've done a good job with the FGVOTD in Biffy's absence :)
Morning PLUSAs and happy technical Friday to everyone. I don't have to work tomorrow so this is my Friday. HOORAY!!!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 9:26 AM
I'd like to start the morning by presenting two matching tiaras to townhouselady and bxgirl for going to bat against that loon landlord yesterday.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 2, 2009 9:26 AM
actually there were two looney landlords. the best part was when he kept calling both of you "birds" lol.
im in a very good mood today for some inexplicable reason. let's keep it that way!
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 2, 2009 9:27 AM
I can only speculate, chicken. I think however, that as part of my next trip to visit companies around the Pacific Rim, I may want to visit this prison for a few days (and nights) to learn more about the work ethic of Filipinos.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 9:28 AM
I wonder what it is about the prison system overseas or maybe just those particular prisoners that lends itself to having them all in a common place at once, coming together to perform something without a melee breaking out. Can you imagine if this was tried in any of the maximum security prisions in America? I think they'd be fighting and trying to kill each other rather than dancing.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 9:32 AM
my uncle was in prison for a many years, multiple times. he actually loved it.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 2, 2009 9:34 AM
DIBS, you got the responses queued up for the usual cast who'll pepper darts at your optimistic views post this worst than expected employmt #?
Posted by: more4less at July 2, 2009 9:36 AM
I have an uncle who is a guard at Angola. Those prisoners don't dance...but they do make excellent leather wallets and purses!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 9:38 AM
That Forum thread later yesterday was hilarious. i read it when i got back from the concert and was dying!! require a kid's report card?!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 2, 2009 9:39 AM
I'd ask the LL to see *his* kid's report card so I'd know if I was living near a shiftless bastard! The nerve of those folks. I'm still hoping they were kidding though.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 9:41 AM
haha snappy - sadly i don't think so.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 2, 2009 9:45 AM
I hope it was a joke too, but I also hope that my kid's report card would be good enough for me to not be embarrassed about showing it to someone!
Yeah, I know, I can already tell I'll be one of those annoying parents...
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at July 2, 2009 9:48 AM
I actually felt sorry for DIBS yesterday.
Today the debate between Team Bull and Team Bear came to an end.
Unemployment data and Manhattan price declines tell the whole story, at least for the near term: GAME OVER.
Posted by: DeadCatBounce at July 2, 2009 9:48 AM
"I actually felt sorry for DIBS yesterday."
Nothing to feel sorry for DIBS about. You could tell he was enjoying the sparring yesterday.
Posted by: wasder at July 2, 2009 9:51 AM
GAME OVER???? ROTFLMMFAO....all the economic data is bottoming. Can't you see that??? Look at Continuing Claims. Change in Manufacturing Payroll was better than expectations.
Learn how to look at ALL the data. The economy is bottoming.
Additionally leeok at the Forum thread posted by 11217,,, you can't deny the rising trend in those graphs....

wasder, I'll miss the company of the "lesser intellectuals" over the long weekend.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 9:55 AM
Yes, poor DIBS, crying all the way to the bank.
DIBS, are you in Bucks this weekend? Canoeing with the family followed by ice cream at Dilly's Corner is maybe a 50/50 possibility for us tomorrow. Or we may hit the beach instead.
Posted by: slopefarm at July 2, 2009 9:57 AM
awww congrats alsawo!

Game Over!
Dibs, you remind me of the clown economist Larry Kudlow who continually ranted about the "Bush economic miracle". Just substitute the words "Bushwick" for Bush.
Even you have changed the debate from "everything is great" to "Where is the bottom?".
The facts are in! NYC is not immune! Admit you were wrong and move on.
One ray of hope: Even the Real Estate Brokers seem to be admitting there is a problem. The path out of this will be:
a. A rise in GDP (Nowhere in sight - a rise is different from not going down as fast).
b. An actual improvement in the employment numbers
c. A slow and painful levelling off of NYC real estate prices that reflect the actual utility value of housing.
Before all that happens, I'm on the lookout for the inevitable...

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 2, 2009 10:25 AM
gooood morning asshats!
Loved the prison videos...it always puzzles me when prisoners show such talent, ingenuity, and creativity but somehow seem to fail at carrying that through to "the outside".
bxgrl and THl do deserve tiaras and much more for dealing with that control freak W/o/G. Brava ladies!
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 2, 2009 10:31 AM
LOL, DH...my thoughts precisely!
Hiya Cobble! How are ya?
Anyone have fun plans for the weekend?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 10:33 AM
hi everyone
am off today- wooo hooo
and hanging out with my 22 year old cousin who also lives in PS but is leaving to work for the Justice Dept in DC for a year - any suggestions of some plave fun to go to lunch
she want to go to Le Gamin on Vanderbilt - anyone been?
Posted by: gemini10 at July 2, 2009 10:40 AM
Hey Snappy! I'm just fine, and how about you! [and the footie? getting better day by day I hope!?]
Believe it or not, I'm working through the weekend, a friend is hiring me to help his company with a super rush project! And it's BH's birthday, so I'm taking him out to dinner.
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 2, 2009 10:42 AM
Hey Gem...I've never been there...you'll have to let us know if its any good. By the way, did you ever find roasted chickens at C-Town?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 10:42 AM
Going to Cape May for the first time ever. Some friends have a house down there. Looking forward to the change of scenery (but a bit worried about lack of space in the house).
Posted by: etson at July 2, 2009 10:42 AM
*curtsy*
Thanks. He was beyond ridiculous it was criminal.
I think Mr. B should do a piece with regard to landlord/tenants right. Particularly because the two of those guys though all bets were off and they could be lawless simply because they had a 2 family home.
Something doesn't smell right.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 2, 2009 10:43 AM
Yes, slope...probably at Dilly's at some point.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 10:47 AM
Cobble that's great! My foot is improving each day...I may be able to ditch the cane next week - YIPEEEE!
THL, that's a great idea for a piece. Mr. B....did you just read what THL said? Jump on that!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 10:47 AM
Good news about your foot Snappy!
Posted by: etson at July 2, 2009 10:48 AM
insert!!!!
yes CTOWN DOES HAVE ROASTED CHICKENS Y'ALL!!!
and they were only $5.99 and super tasty
i made chicken quesadillas with spinach and sharp NY cheddar, and homade guacamole - unreal!
THL - great idea - b/c frankly many of us don't know all the rules. I think you made a point yesterday that I just learned like last week although I have been a LL for 6 years and that despite you as the LL living and owning that house, the tenant has posession of their apt, so you can't just go in there and physically throw them onto the street if they don't pay rent for 2 months...
etson - jealous! I really want to go to CC and or Nantucket
Posted by: gemini10 at July 2, 2009 10:48 AM
Sorry for all the typos. I think it's time for a new keyboard.
I think this one lost the fight with the cats.
HA...I SAID CATS!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 2, 2009 10:49 AM
Thanks Gemini! I have never been to Nantucket. Hope you have a great weekend with your cousin.
Agree on the landlord / tenant idea.
Posted by: etson at July 2, 2009 10:50 AM
Cape May should be great fun etson! Well, you'll likely be outside most of the time [weather permitting] so a crowded house shouldn't be toooo bad, no?
Thanks Snappy! Ah, very good to hear about the footie. I'm sure it will be a RELIEF!!
Ok, we all have to think good things for Arkady today. She has a visit with the d-word, which I believe she was gnashing her teeth over yesterday! Or perhaps we should be thinking good things for the d-word in hopes that she doesn't bite his hand off!
Posted by: cobblehiller at July 2, 2009 10:53 AM
The fact is I could never be a landlord. I'm too much of a control freak and same way I'd protect my private information as a potential tenant (spending habits, report cards?!?!?!) I'd want to protect my home. So rather than resorting to freakishly invasive (perhaps criminal) measures I'd rather live in a single family home.
Done and Done.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 2, 2009 10:53 AM
CATS!!! The word has been mentioned...let the party begin! Ha!
Gem, I'm coming to your house for dinner!! Two things that make me happy are spinach and cheese! I got bored one Saturday and went to C-Town and bought some stuff and came up with what I call Snappy Nachos:
(everything listed was finely chopped)
plum tomatoes
oven roast some garlic in olive oil
scallions
grilled chicken breast
braided fresh mozzerella that's been marinated in olive oil, basil, salt, garlic, oregano
balsamic vinegar
Dump all of the above over nachos or bowtie pasta...DELICIOUS!!!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 2, 2009 10:54 AM
ill be staying in the neighborhood this weekend (have off tomorrow yay!) because of the dogs and cat sitting. hopefully i'll be able to smell some local BBQ's that i can crash hahah

I used to do a quick dish in summer [and need to do this again soon now that I think of it!]
steamed zucchini slices
slivered sun dried tomatoes or grape/cherry tomatoes cut in half
pitted olives, cut in half
slivered basil
roasted peppers, cut in thin strips
olive oil, salt, pepper to taste
Dump on top of a bowl of bow-tie pasta, toss and serve with a little good parmaesan.
Quick and easy, and YUM!

morning! Thanks for the tiara (they'll go on my crowded tiara shelf! :-) THL really had them on the run! I mean- I know its tough on everyone but damn! My private life is not something for some guy to scrutinize and judge jsut because he owns a piece of property. If the usual documents don't please him, I hate to think what he does when he looks for a doctor.
I totally sympathize over the keyboard, THL. One of my cats hooked a nail under the cap key and popped the top off. On my new laptop, mind you. Not the old one (oh no- why spoil an old laptop when you can mess up a new one?)
I'm going to keep off the computer for most of the weekend and have fun fixing, cleaning and doing art. That's my staycation but if anyone's around and wants to get together, email me or MM. (Rob- you missed a great bbq last weekend.) If you're in the area let us know.

Cobblehiller,
I believe that house needed a complete reworking of the floorplan, from what I recall. I can't imagine gutting means destroying the interior details. That house is ABSOLUTELY ridiculously gorgeous.

Posted by: more4less at July 2, 2009 11:58 AM
Ha! Actual statements made by folks being interviewed for jobs:
I have a problem with authority
Tell us about a problem you had with a co-worker and how you resolved it
"The resolution was we were both fired"
What are your hobbies and interests?
[He said] 'Well, as you can see, I'm a young, virile man and I'm single -- if you ladies know what I'm saying.' Then he looked at one of the fair-haired board members and said, 'I particularly like blondes.
Why should we hire you?
"I would be a great asset to the events team because I party all the time."
Do you have any questions?
"Cross dressing isn't a problem is it?"
If this doesn't work out can I call you to go out sometime?"
"If I get an offer, how long do I have before I have to take the drug test?"
"When you do background checks on candidates, do things like public drunkenness arrests come up?"
Why are you looking for a job?
"Cigarettes are getting more expensive, so I need another job."
(During a telephone call to schedule the interview) "Can we meet next month? I am currently incarcerated."

Yeah, Dave. Those are the "before" photos though.
Brownstoner did a couple stories about that house back when it was for sale and when it sold and I remember those photos well. I also remember people saying the floorplan was really wacky, so I'm guessing the gutting has a lot to do with reworking what was a really terrible floorplan.
Amazing place though. And the landscaping out in the front and side has always been immaculate.

We're in the Middle of a Crash': Black Swan
By: CNBC.com | 02 Jul 2009 | 08:55 AM ET
http://www.cnbc.com/id/31706523
The financial system is crashing and action must be taken by the US government to convert debt into equity to produce a more stable environment, Nassim Taleb, author of "The Black Swan," told CNBC Thursday.
"You may have green shoots, whatever you want to call them, you may have temporary relief, but you are still in a world that's breaking," Taleb said on "Squawk Box."
Anything that's fragile like the financial system will eventually crash, he said. "We're in the middle of a crash," Taleb said. "So if I'm going to forecast something, it is that it's going to get worse, not better."
The government needs to deleverage debt and not try stimulus packages that will inflate assets, he said. "What makes me very pessimistic in not seeing any leadership or awareness on parts of government on what has to be done, which is deleverage $40-to-$70 trillion," Taleb said.
"The monkey on our back is debt," he added.
As an example, Taleb said banks should not be sending demands for larger and larger sums from homeowner in arrears on their mortgage. Instead the bank should offer to lower the monthly payments in return for part-ownership of the property. "People would be able to start from scratch on a healthy basis. You don't want to wait for foreclosure," he said.
Nassim Taleb, principal of Universa Investments and author
of 'The Black Swan,' shares his outlook on the economy.

Hey Tools suck down on this! The real unemployment rate is about 10% but since it's 4 of July they did not want spoil anyone's plans.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/467K-jobs-cut-in-June-jobless-apf-749843235.html?x=0
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Employers cut a larger-than-expected 467,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate climbed to a 26-year high of 9.5 percent.
26 year high huh and you expect Real Estate prices to stabilize???
The Labor Department report, released Thursday, showed that even as the recession flashes signs of easing, companies likely will want to keep a lid on costs and be wary of hiring until they feel certain the economy is on solid ground.
That's going to be a long time Clowns!
"Since the recession began in December 2007, the economy has lost a net total of 6.5 million jobs."

I see the local assclown is still at it, proclaiming the end of the world. His only claim to fame (from his momma's basement) is his self-proclaimed ability to call the market months in advance. Amazing.
Like a retard on the beach yelling about how the tide will soon come in, and low and behold, it does, to the amazement of the obsequious toadies around him.
So the market is down? is it any wonder with our neo-marxist president spending 4 trillion (700billion TARP + 3/4 trillion 2010 budget)dollars we don't have.
What's more, he spends it by giving it over to groups like ACORN or Rahm Emmanuel's brother instead of giving us all a tax break and stimulating re-investment by small businesses that provide 80% of new jobs.
The market will begin to recover in the short term, as will housing because of the sheer volume of money being spent by Washington. Like getting a 100K loan from Vinny Breakleg and going to Vegas only to realize that the money will be due after the party is over.
Next, he wants to tackle healthcare? 1/3 of the US economy, and model it after a failed Canadian and UK system. Nice.
Hey, at least assclowns like the twhat will have all the free prozac he can eat to treat his cyber-turrets.
Happy 4th of July.

Speaking of who's racist and who's not, the US History Regents exam this year had an essay on discrimination, and the Global History Regents had an essay on human rights violations. Actual sentences from actual students:
Women is a small word. It stands for tender and weak. Sweatshops and the garment industry required dexterous hands that only a female can provide. White men always imposed suffrage on others. Whites would walk on the streets behind African-Americans and call them ugly. Whites and Italians were raised to hate. If you have a long nose and blue eyes you are considered a Jew. African-Americans and Asian-Americans were made fun of for their chinky eyes. Ugly people were discriminated against in favor of blondes with big chests. But even though they might not be a different color or have breasts they can all do the same things. Mikhail Gorbachev was an African-American who used non-violence. The Ayatollah helped blacks in South Africa. Cesar Chavez is the President of Venezuela. There are no words to describe this.

ENY - The Regents grading rubric for the essays says that students can receive credit for "creating information." I am not making this up. They go on to refer to "creating information" as "the highest level of the cognitive domain" and "an insightful reorganization of information into a new pattern or whole." I'd say the above student, like Stephen Hawking, has successfully reorganized information at a level so high none of us can understand it.

slopefarm,
re; obama healthcare
what the president says is one thing, what will happen is another.
He wants to avoid a single payer system to stimulate competition. What happens though is this, medicare sets the standard payments to doctors and all the other health plans follow suit. why would they pay more if most doctors are enrolled in medicare and medicare pays less?
this new plan that would cover the "47 million" would presumably be some sort of medicaid-like entity (federally funded, state administered). medicaid pays even less than medicare. Doctors don't even want to deal with medicaid.
End result is this, the national plan (be it medi-america, or medicare-lite, will be setting the standard for reimbursements for all insurance companies. If the plan is cheaper, private companies will dis-enroll from their private plans and sign up with the new low cost, cheapy plan, thereby ensuring a lower standard of care.
Furthermore, he is proposing an increase in the patient pool by about 15-20%, without any discernable means of increasing the doctor pool by a similar amount. We can't out-source doctoring to India unfortunately. Again, quality healthcare goes down the drain.
Beyond that, he refuses to address TORT reform , that is, he refuses to acknowledge the fact that much medical expendature is entirely due to CYO medicine, where the doctor orders an MRI to avoid the 1 in a million possibility that you have a gonad tumor.
The dirty little secret is that the government does a HORRIBLE job of administering healthcare as it stands, Medicaid in NY state is full of fraud, waste and abuse and medicare is due to go bankrupt in 15 years.
Rationing of medical care will be a necessity at first then a sad reality, as it is in Canada and the UK.
Happy 4th of July.
God Bless America.

Hipsters and Yuppies are both cut from the same mold.
1) They both think they are cutting edge by living in a gentrified area which they didn't even care about until their friend "Molly" moved in or they read about it in New York magazine as the "up and coming" area -- well after the real artists and working class had shaped it into a community. They're real estate suckers -- not real estate geniuses as they believe.
2) They both are habitual hypocrites. They support Obama and "equality for all" like no tomorrow, but are inherently racist and classist assholes. They will move into a once culturally-mixed city neighborhood and then immediately start to racial profile and judge any old time residents by the color of their skin and the quality of their shops. They will eat at the local Spanish retaurant and teach their brats how to speak another language only to show their friends how cultured they are, but really only want to be surrounded by more whitebred assholes like themselves. They are the anti-melting pot which NYC has always prided itself on.
3) They all support each other's lifestyles and attitudes, but once things get tough the perceived loyalty disappears unlike the working class residents who have built long time roots and respect that last a lifetime.
4) They both pay no dues in life. Many of them are trust funders who have had everything handed to them -- so once they move into a city neighborhood they expect everything to change for them. They want to be down with a city but refuse to accept some of its old traditions. They want the old businesses removed if they don't directly cater to them or if they cause any type of inconvenience not considering whether or not these are hard working families that have operated there for generations. Truly despicable behavior.
5) They both are attention seekers. Hipsters have their exotic pets and parades and yuppies have their pure breeds and babies. Yuppies use babies as an accessory - they parade these brats around to get approval and attention from people around them as if the world only revolves around them, their baby and their French Mastiff. True definition of narcissism.
6) They both are lemmings, sheeple, followers. They are motivated solely by trends, but believe they are so unique and the world revolves around THEM.
7) They both are condescending, pompous and sarcasstic all while riding on complete ignorance as they fool themselves into how much they truly know about city life, culture and society. They are deluded in their own self worth.
This list is interchangeable and can go on and on and on because of their shallow pretension.
Hell yeah - hipsters and yuppies are they same implanted scumbags with the same mind set and motivations - and the mass urban gentrification over the past 10 years that they have been about are certainly part of the economic treachery that we all face now.
All in the name of: "LOOK AT ME, I'M SPECIAL." Thanks asswipes for destroying our city!

Legion:
Health care is already "rationed."
Those who can afford it have it.
Those who can't don't.
And that's 47 million people.
And what's one of the first things Canadians say they miss when living in the U.S.? National health care. Same for the Scandinavians.
But then, as I was told by somebody from Sweden, the U.S. is a poor country. And if you measure our birth deaths, average life expectancies, etc. against other "developed" nations, she has an argument.
(We're also beginning to decline in height, on average, Northern Europeans surpassing us because -- ahem -- they eat better and have better health care. Who's the tallest of them all? Not Americans, as we used to be. It's the Dutch! And this has happened in just one generation, according to an extended article in The New Yorker.)
Yes, Northern European countries tax people heavily, but add up all the out-of-pocket expenses Americans pay for health care, day care, elder care and raising kids (down to school clothes, which are covered in a place like Holland), we shell out the same amounts and more, and often for inferior services.

What- I saw it. I was out for awhile (dave- the service at Peaches SUCKS!!!!! Food's great tho'). and I have no disagreement with you that that piece of trailer trash has no business living in a big City if she can't handle diversity. I have doubt whatsoever had the officer been Black, she would have said even worse. I would be the last person to deny racism exists, based on my own experiences. FYI- when I went to school upstate I had a few lovely antisemitisms thrown my way.
For that matter when I was with my husband and walking down the street(also Upstate) I had quite a few white folk spit at me and call me N---lover. They're out there- but they are not going to win.

My racism cannot be subject to a vote since I am not capable of voting. As I have mentioned before, there was "some confusion" regarding my ability to vote this past November. I think the confusion stems from my criminal past and if that disqualifies me from ever voting in my life.
I will complain about the system even though I don't take part in it. Everyone else is the problem, except for me. I am perfect despite my insanity.

NOP,
you've got it all wrong.
First, the "47" million uninsured is a canard.
breaking down the figures you get the following;
approx. 15% of these folks are children who would qualify under the state's SHIP program if the parents took the 10 minutes to apply on line.
approx. 15-20% of these folks are not citizens of this nation, they are citizens of another sovereign nation and are therefore the responsibility of that sovereign nation, cross-reference this fact with California's current bankrupt medical system for a better understanding of how citizens from other nation's can become a burden on the medical system.
approx. 15-20% of these folks are working adults who CHOOSE not to purchase health insurance because they simply don't think they need it. Like all those uninsured motorists on the road for which us insured people have to pay into a pool with our auto insurance premiums to cover. You can purchase major medical insurance for a reasonable amount, comparable to auto insurance.
To summarize, you really only have about 15-20 million truly uninsured people in America. These folks can easily be absorbed under the current medicare/medicaid/SHIP programs, why would we need to re-invent the wheel and restructure the entire medical system to insure them? what's more, there is a little known alternative which actually works, which rewards people for remaining healthy and not overutilizing the medical system and can be instituted quite easily; it is called the Health Savings Account. Basically a combination of major medical with a pre-tax health savings account. What you don't use, you keep and continues to grow like an IRA. You are covered by a major insurer like GHI or Oxford and don't have to worry about breaking a leg. If you remain healthy like most Americans age 15-55, you get to keep the compounding pre-tax monies into retirement. That makes sense.
next point; comparing Sweden to the USA makes no sense at all. Sweden is a nation of 9 million with a negative birth rate and very little immigration. The USA is a nation of 300 million with the largest amount of immigration, legal and not of any nation on the planet. This includes many people who are sick. This means our life span decreases on average, because we take on the poor and infirm from other nations. Any gains made on the national scale by our healthcare standards are diminished by the influx of poorly nourished and poorly treated immigrants. Not to say we don't have our own problems, but nothing like the endemic conditions of the third world. This means our average height decreases because we accept millions of individuals from Mexico for instance who have a much shorter average height than northern Europeans, just a fact.
We need informed debate to hash out this issue, and don't even try the race card over this issue folks, it's not about race or culture or nationality. it's about applying facts and logic to better serve our children's future.

Schip is a program for people on medicare and "SHIPs provide free counseling and assistance via telephone and face-to-face interactive sessions, public education presentations and programs, and media activities". HSA's are great if you have the money to put in them and if you don't have much, you won't be saving much. So no- these 2 plans do nothing for the uninsured such as myself who were covered until our jobs went away. We don't qualify for medicare or medicaid, SCHIP programs are basically window dressing (as per their website) and HSA's wouldn't begin to cover a broken leg unless you could afford to sock away thousands of dollars.
"Contribution limits for 2009 are $5950 for Family, $3,000 for individual, and $1,000 for catch-up contributions." This is totally laughable. The contribution limit for a family would be gone if 5 minutes with one emergency room visit and follow-up. The whole idea was conceived by people with a great federally funded insurance plan for people with the money to afford it. Still does nothing to address the problem the rest of us have- especially those of us who have worked hard, paid taxes and are even citizens. It was all window dressing and B.S.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 2, 2009 8:11 PM
thank u bxgrl. our company went sort of cheapo and switched from great heath insurance to kinda shitty one. but id rather have a shitty health plan from a company than the universal one. sounds weird i know. tho i do think everyone should be covered. im on the fence with this issue.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 2, 2009 8:16 PM
rob- I'm not sure what bothers you about the universal plan but it's better than a crap private plan that costs too much. Millions of uninsured people cost everyone also.
I've never worked for a company that has an HSA plan but the amount of money you can put into them per year and all you're doing is saving on some taxes- is ludicrous. having gone through 2 devastating hospital stays, the tax free 3000$ max they let you keep tax free is simply ludicrous. It's totally inadequate for real medical care. The taxes they are letting you save on that amount of money is a pittance.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 2, 2009 8:27 PM
Legion,
The 47 million figure is from the American Public Health Association, citing the U.S. Census Bureau, describing 47 million "Americans" as uninsured in 2006.
The declining average in height for Americans was controlled for immigrants, according to the New Yorker article, so they're factored out.
It's worse than we think. The U.S. ranks 42 in life expectancy world-wide -- for people BORN in the U.S, according to reports published by the Kaiser Foundation. So it's not just Sweden.
NOP
Posted by: NOP at July 2, 2009 8:36 PM
bxgrl,
WRONG.
The SHIP programs include Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus.
If you have children, your children will be covered as long as you are making less than 28,000 per year as a couple in NYState. Mind you , you will also be qualified for food stamps, housing subsidies and free education.
If you are a single individual, you will qualify for Family Health Plus as long as you are making less than 11,000 per year. It's not much but also consider that you will qualify for all the other social programs at that level.
Now if you are making say, 20K a year and you are single. You have to make some decisions. This is the hard part because this is where people start with the emotional outbursts about how they should be entitled to do whatever they want. There are consequences however, to our actions. Should you rent a 1500/month apartment? no. should you have a kid with no support structure around you? no. Should you go out nightly to have dinner and drinks at PerSe? no. Sould you live beyond your means? no.
You should pay the 400 per month for Major Medical coverage. A plan that will cover you should a catastrophe happen, as in breaking your leg. If not, you have a high deductable and the knowledge that most people in their twenties and thirties do not have major medical problems.
You should be living with a roomate and sharing expenses. you should be living frugally and enjoying the many free things this city has to offer. You should be saving and working towards a better future. you should be training for a job that has many job openings ; such as home health aid or nurse.
As far as the HSA account, you can certainly roll over the amount into the next year, I know, because I had an HSA account with Oxford. I am self employed and the HSA is considered a medical IRA of sorts, it's my money.
BXGRL; here's another solution, if you were to break your leg. You go to any city emergency room, where the law requires them to treat you. You will be treated and billed. If you cannot pay, you will be put on a payment plan according to what you can pay. I know because I have tenants who have done just that. They even have payment plans at HHC city hospitals where you basically pay $15 dollars a month for medical care including visits to the many clinics. Go to Metropolitan or Lincoln Hospitals if you don't believe me. You say you need medications? the major Pharmaceutical companies are tripping over themselves to give you free medications, if you qualify.
bottom line, you have to pay for some services in life. Some people, simply don't want to have to pay for medical services.
HSA accounts work on the idea that most insurance companies and persons who have taken a statistics course understand; that most people do not have major medical problems between a certain age. 15-55. Some do, but not the vast majority. As such, taking pre-tax dollars out of your paycheck to build up your health savings account will quickly add up over the course of a few years, say 25-31. Does anyone here recall even seeing a doctor in College? I went once, for a banged up knee. Once in 4 years, and not a single time in the 4 years of post-graduate studies. and again, if there were a major catastrophe, the HSA has the Major medical component which will cover you if you did break your leg and an orthopedist had to set it for 10,000 dollars. The benefits usually kick in after the first 2,000 dollars is spent. Bxgrl, are you telling me, you cannot accumulate 2000 in your health account within 2 years?
Here's yet another solution; sign up for one of the many low cost health care cooperative plans, through which you will have access, at a low monthly fee of about 60 dollars, to thousands of healthcare practitioners at a lower, negotiated fee schedule. AmeriPlan Health. look it up.
Final solution, if you are that sickly, simply do like many patients do in the hospital systems of new york; apply for medical disibility and get medicare early. I am not joking. I know of people who are on SSI/medicare disability for anything from lower back pain (which 45% of the population has after age 50) to "psych" problems.
Good luck and understand that there is always a way in this great nation. At least until we get to the point where we think the government will solve all our problems.

Regarding the New Yorker article on average US height. I will give you the point that the study was adjusted for shorter immigrant populations.
But here is the counter-point. Is this height indicative of a true lack of prosperity and healthcare or is it more a function of too much prosperity and freedom?
We have the freedom in the US to eat however badly we want to, however much we want to and whatever we want to. In fact we have a term for this; FastFood nation. We also have an obesity problem and a problem with diabetes. I suspect all are linked, but not by an underlying poverty, more by an underlying abundance of junk food and poor nutritional habits.
Once again, I will also point out that you must compare the United States to other nations which have populations in excess of 200 million and take on the immigration health issues that we do, to make a truly comparative analysis of whether or not our health care system is working to meet the demands of the people.
Also realize that all those Northern European nations cited in the study have benefitted greatly from the largesse of the American people in that funds that we could have been using to beef up our own healthcare system were instead used to protect the entire European continent for about 50 years. We still have bases in Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe. In other words, it is quite easy for the five million or so people in the Netherlands to grow a couple of inches over the past two generations and concentrate on prenatal care, when they don't have to apply 1/3 of their nation's GDP to protect against endless stream of despots always lurking about.
Finally, more recent studies show, that Americans are once again starting to increase in height. And don't discount the looming spectre of technology which has been America's ace in the hole for about a century now. It will not be long before genetic height selection will be available, we are already cloning dogs for goodness sakes. Not saying it's a good thing, just an inevitable phenomenon.
Posted by: Legion at July 2, 2009 10:15 PM
Legion- I got the information from the web sites so if its wrong you can contact the webmasters. thanks though for the other information and i will look into that stuff and yes, I'm sure i could accumulate 2000 over the course of a year or two. But unless I misunderstand you, you mean i can have 2000 in that account and still get major medical paid for if it goes over? I'm a little confused on exactly how it works. the websites are a little vague on some points. I have looked up coop health plans. i would love to find one for 60$ a month but the lowest i found so far started at 180 for almost no coverage. Right now I can't afford that much- I'm looking for work. But I do thank you for giving me some more leads.
Considering my present income on unemployment I might qualify but I have never been on welfare, have always paid my own way and like a lot of others have had a few disasters thrown my way that ruined any financial security I had. I don't expect anything for free or the government to do everything for me. What I do expect is a better return for the tax money I pay.
