Biff appears to be WORKING again - the nerve of that guy

Posted by: more4less at July 1, 2009 9:22 AM

haha m4l - welcome back. biff is on vacation i believe.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 1, 2009 9:23 AM

a few days ago we were lauding the great coffee at Clover Cafe and Art Gallery, and today while driving by they look like theyve shut down. bummer. maybe the cost of the clover machine plus high price of coffee did em in...or the location.

strolling the lovely malls in virginia and north carolina, retailers are hurting bad - real bad. I kidded with some of the retailers about those "green shoots" and one response was worth repeating: "Yeah right. All we see is dead grass, dried dirt, and baking desert sand. Green shoots is a government sponsored propaganda that has yielded no improvement in our retail sales."

okay ive been saying how ive been watching a ton of hgtv cuz nothing else is good on. anyway, i am sooooooo sick of how houses look all tiled up. i guess hardwood floors are out of fashion now or something, but the tiling looks attrocious and will be so dated SO fast. and i hate how it's laid down!! like criss cross shaped and big ugly tiles like a foot by a foot (i have my theory about why they are a foot) and thick ugly tinted grout. and the color of the tiles are always terrible, all peachy and tan, etc. barf. a tiled bedroom is just hideous, how can it feel like a bedroom? it winds up looking like a hideous medeterranean hospital.

sorry if i offended anyone with hideous big tiles.

goldie i think they had a health code violation. that health code violation is called wallet rape. but seriously, i think they were open for the street fair or something but plan to reopen at a later date. (someone mentioned that yesterday) im gonna give the coffee a try if they have iced versions of it.

In honor of Canadian Day (Le Fete Nationale) and as a salute to Biff (who is on vacation) I looked for an appropriate FGVOTD. Not finding anything to do with cute Canadian cats, I thought you might like cute baby seals...

Rob, I've been seeing the same shows...it seems that in places like Florida especially, tile floors are king. I actually saw one Florida House Hunters episode where the buyers were crying about having wood floors instead of carpet. I was stunned. I don't know a single person who would rather have carpet instead of wood floors. I have carpet and I HATE IT!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 9:34 AM

rob- you asked yesterday about the Transit Museum- yes, it's a great, fun place to go! I used to live up the block and took my niece and nephew there. You'll enjoy it.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 9:35 AM

goldie...I've been past there and it has been open/closed/open at various times. I don't know for sure that they have an actual Clover Coffee Maker though. Can anyone verify that???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 9:35 AM

snappy, rob- I know! I always hated carpet. I don't know though about tile in hot climates. Seems that tile floors would feel cooler? But I still want wood.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 9:37 AM

Snappy...I have carpet in the bedroom up on the Cape and in PA. After years of wood floors in so many places, carpetting in the bedroom is quite nice.

PS It does match the drapes!!!! :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 9:37 AM

I'm with you re tiled floors Rob - so cold and unappealing. If I lived anywhere that had them I'm sure I would break my jaw eventually from slipping and falling so much.
Carpet can be OK in the right place (rewrites welcome) but generally does not suit NYC apartments.

Posted by: etson at July 1, 2009 9:39 AM

I thought about the coolness on the feet factor too Bxgirl. That may be why.

Dave, LOL!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 9:39 AM

i actually do like carpet a lot, primarily cuz i grew up with it. carpet can get nasty if you have animals though, but i guess if you shampoo it every once in a while youll be fine. ive always had a carpet even on wood floors in my room cuz i spend most of my time in doors on the floor. (not wall to wall carpeting or anything), but recently i threw out my carpet cuz i thought it was carrying ringworm (dont ask) and now i like just having the bare wood floor. i polished it on my knees last week wall to wall with pledge and this other cleaner and it's so slippery it makes my roommate's eldery dog plop over.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 9:42 AM

Starbucks owns Clover Equipment Company. I wouldn't support that.

Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 1, 2009 9:42 AM

oh the coolness factor could be true. maybe they are heated in the winter as well? i still think they are ugly. i dont want the feel of a bathroom or kitchen where im sleeping or watching tv.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 9:44 AM

what is it about starbucks you dont support randi? they are actually very good to employees (so ive heard).

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 9:45 AM

they are also good at systematically running local coffee shops out of business

Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 1, 2009 9:47 AM

I grew up with carpet. Dark green and then bright green shag (my father's choice- no one else's). My mother lost jewelry in the shag. Seriously, a gold ring that was never found again. I was sure there were little critters in there, no matter how much you vacuum

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 9:47 AM

and the coffee is meh at best, and those frappacinos are soooooo bad for you, like eating a big mac in a glass.

Posted by: Return of Randolph at July 1, 2009 9:48 AM

DIBS - do you have net curtains to go with the carpet?

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 9:49 AM

I'm gonna have to agree with Randi on the starbucks thing. I prefer to call them starf@cks.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 9:49 AM

quote:

"they are also good at systematically running local coffee shops out of business "

perhaps if those local coffee shops were good, they wouldnt be run out of business? i dont know, on one hand i sort of do agree with you. their presence is a bit much i think. but that's the kind of society we've become as sad as it might be.

that being said, ive never gotten a lick of attitude from a single worker at starbucks. cant say the same about independent coffee shops however.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 9:49 AM

randi...Clover Equipment & Clover Cafe are two different things. Pull your head out of your ass.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 9:49 AM

bxgirl, the critters is one of the many reasons I hate carpet. That plus having a cat, asthma, allergies and smoking...not a good combo!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 9:50 AM

aw dave, randi is trying to blend in today and actually participate in a conversation, must you be so harsh on our resident tranny?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 9:52 AM

snappy- how do you do the cat + the asthma + allergies? I would absolutely croak if I developed allergies and had to get rid of my cats. Actually, I wouldn't get rid of them, I'd medicate :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 9:53 AM

Actually, there have been a lot of articles about how high quality coffee shops have thrived by opening next to Starbucks.

Posted by: slopefarm at July 1, 2009 9:55 AM

i think laptops should be banned from coffee shops. there i i said it!

Hey Rob - I just walked up to the Duane Reade on Broadway and Houston and I saw no less than 4 construction sites were union guys were just chillin doing nothing.

i remember you brought this up last week and some people jumped on you - although you were def right!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 1, 2009 9:57 AM

Bxgirl...I medicate! My cat is my baby and I refuse to get rid of her. I also use an ionic air cleaner and vacuum every day.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 9:59 AM

dh...it's 10:00...break time for union employees throughout the country. That goes back to the days unions were necessary because of the sweat shops.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:01 AM

I used to work at Starbucks back in high school and it's insane how the workers in Manhattan locations cut corners. I won't get into the nitty gritty but starbucks stuff isn't that bad if the workers actually perpare things properly.

It was actually a good company to work for, and they treated their employees very well. it seems "specialty coffee" drinks were just a passing fad, and now they are feeling it.

That said - the Starbucks on Spring and Crosby is probably the worst in the country.

easy to get rid of those laptops. charge for wifi

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 10:05 AM

Rob- They tile the floors in Florida and places like arizona, Vegas etc.. due to the heat. The tile floors stay cool on hot days. I agree with you that they are ugly but have you seen the people from Flordia? Just as ugly.

They also like carpeting because it's baby proof, Also ugly and not my taste.

Don't get me started when they use the laminate Pergo fax wood floors. Sounds like you are walking on plastic.

Posted by: Adam Incognito at July 1, 2009 10:06 AM

Rob/Insert:

well you know I love to watch HGTV - I think the reason why tile floors are so popular in the south and southwest b/c frankly they are cold to the touch. Those places are soo hot, it's probably nice to come home to cold tile underfoot, no?
am not into tile - but I see the allure....

Posted by: gemini10 at July 1, 2009 10:06 AM

Only 2 more days til I leave for Majorca!!! I've got the white linen suit already to go!!!

Posted by: Adam Incognito at July 1, 2009 10:07 AM

On Sunday afternoon a patron of Haas Beans on 5th between 17th and 18th in GH got her laptop stolen. She apparently went to the bathroom and a guy just strolled into the shop, picked up her laptop and strolled away. The police showed up and she had to hop in the backseat while they took of looking for him based on a description other patrons gave. If you take your laptop to a coffee shop, NEVER WALK AWAY FROM IT!!! Unless you really don't want the thing anyway. Not saying she deserved to have it taken or anything, but people need to exercise a little common sense.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:07 AM

ah- common sense. A rare commodity, no?

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 10:09 AM

snappy, if i wasnt such of high moral stature, i could have stolen 100s of unattended laptops at the starbucks around the corner from me (the one dipster was speaking of) over the last 8 years ive worked here. people are so naive sometimes.

Rob,

My folks moved from NY to Virginia after retiring and they have mostly hardwood floors but...they do have a really lovely tiled area in the kitchen/sitting room and nothing feels better after coming inside on a hot day than feeling those ice cold air conditioned tiles on your feet. Sometimes I'll just lay down on the floor with a pillow under my head and watch TV.

Hot weather + Cold Feet = Happy me.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 10:13 AM

Adam, have a nice trip. It's a truly wonderful place, tiles notwithstanding. :)

Common sense is a very rare commodity.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:15 AM

Cats are smarter than human beings. They always lay on the tiled floor on hot days. The really smart ones go straight to the bathroom sinks.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:17 AM

More like drunk Brits and Germans dittoB. Still amazing and beautiful. Only spending 2 days in Palma to get my disco on, but most of the trip we will be in Cala D'or which isn't as crowded. renting an old motorcyle to take through the hills with my lady on the back.

I got the ring yesterday, going to pop the question offically next week.

Posted by: Adam Incognito at July 1, 2009 10:17 AM

My cat likes to doze in the tub or on the floor in front of the dishwasher in the kitchen. I prefer when she does that because she's a total fan hog.

Adam...congrats on the upcoming proposal! How are you going to do it?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:19 AM

Speaking of House Hunters, anyone catch the International show in Italy on the Amalfi Coast? I couldn't believe the couple that chose that shack on the hill with the 750 steps to climb and when they do renovations, which they will definitely have to do, the only way to get the materials up to the house is by donkey. I was stunned as they were in their late 40's or 50's and all I could think about is having to climb those steps when they get older.Yes the view was great but 750 steps with groceries?

Posted by: iluvclintonhill at July 1, 2009 10:20 AM

ugh, that Potential Renter posting above is giving me heartburn.

Adam- how wonderful!Congrats! She's a lucky lady.

dibs, snappy- my cat loves to sleep under the clawfoot tub. I have with very long hair though and she suffers i the summer. I'm thinking of cutting her hair this year.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 10:23 AM

I must admit I don't watch House Hunters Int'l...I can never stand the way most homes are done in terms of tile, kitchens, etc. I'm just not one of those people who love old world style anything. (admitting my narrow-mindedness...yikes!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:24 AM

Not sure yet. I thought about something like writing it in the sand on the beach and going for a walk just to run into it, but changed my mind and thought it would be too cheesey. Not sure yet?

Posted by: Adam Incognito at July 1, 2009 10:24 AM

Adam - that sounds like a fantastic plan. Hope it all works out!

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 10:26 AM

Good luck Adam. Does she check this blog or will it be a surprise?

Rob, yuo were kind of sour on that thread, but I will respond there.

I like the sand idea! That's pretty neat.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:27 AM

Adam - congrats!

Iluvclintonhill:
I missed that episode - however I saw one that was in Rome and I was appalled at how bad the neighborhood looked. graffiti all over the bldgs and the bldgs look poorly constructed and the interiors were cheesy.
Now the paris show - a completely different story.

Posted by: gemini10 at July 1, 2009 10:33 AM

Really cheesy would be to have it baked into her dessert at dinner.

That comment about checking potential renter's spending habits was nothing short of insane! I hope he was kidding.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:40 AM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:51 AM

Adam, How great, Hope you have a wonderful trip! You'll think of something! Writing in the sand sounds very romantic!

"That comment about checking potential renter's spending habits was nothing short of insane!"

Snappy, When BH and I were looking, first we were told that there was nothing for us in this area—which obviously turns out to be untrue— then we were asked for brokerage statements, work stubs, bank statements, cashier's checks for deposit, first and last, and work and personal references!! I was pretty peeved at all that to say the least. And we had to pay $50 each for a credit check since we aren't married! It was brutal.

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 1, 2009 10:52 AM

"And we had to pay $50 each for a credit check since we aren't married!"

A small price to pay for living in sin. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:53 AM

That is over the top, cobble. I don't use a broker. I do want to see credit reports, but usually let people print out their freebies. I also don't see the point in a cashier's check for first month and security, unless we were signing three days before move in. As long as the check clears before I have to turn over the key, that's all I need. I also don't ask for any of that until I am ready to offer the place to someone. But as I told rob in teh other thread, I do want to know that a tenant who loses a job has the ability to keep paying. Usually, though, it has been a couple, both working, so I haven't sweated it too hard. The fact that the thread concers a studio makes the asset confirmation mroe important since there will be only one tenant, not two.

Posted by: slopefarm at July 1, 2009 10:57 AM

Dirty is right, Starbucks does (or did) treat their workers extremely well. I have not-so-fond memories of graduating college in Oregon in the middle of a recession and TRYING to get hired by Starbucks so I could have health insurance. Sadly, I wasn't selected for intensive coffee training and I was forced to move to New York and go into investment banking.

But I will always have a soft spot for that company, even if they didn't hire me. What I think Starbucks haters miss is, companies that TRY to treat their employees well are few and far between. I'm pretty damn sure that Bittersweet, Atlas, Oslo and Grumpy don't offer health insurance or stock options.

As for HGTV, I always end up screaming at the television: "DONT RIP OUT THOSE KITCHEN CABINETS! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

Posted by: Heather at July 1, 2009 10:57 AM

I am so lucky with my landlords (even the Great EVLL!). But I really think its over the top to demand all that really private info and I have to ask- shouldn't I know what my landlord's assets are? after all, if they go into foreclosure, I'm screwed just as well. I'm just sick and tired at how little personal privacy we seem to have any rights to any more. If a landlord wants my entire personal life laid out for them, I expect the same in return- but that never happens, I bet.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 10:58 AM

She doesnt check this site. She calls in my Real Estate Porno Site and let's me be when I'm on it. I need my privacy.

Posted by: Adam Incognito at July 1, 2009 10:58 AM

That's insane!!! I got lucky with the apt. I'm in now...they listed it as a two br because the br is really large and could be divided. Everyone who went to see it before me wasn't interested because they needed a true 2 br. I was the only one who didn't care. I saw it, liked it and hopped in the car with the LL's sister and went to her office and signed the lease and got my keys. No credit check, no questions, no nothing. I think they were just so happy that someone wasn't b!tching them out about it not being a true 2br. And, I paid no fee since the broker was the LL's sister and was doing for him for free. HOT DAMN!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 10:58 AM

"Sadly, I wasn't selected for intensive coffee training and I was forced to move to New York and go into investment banking."

No wonder that profession had such problems!!! :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 10:59 AM

Hey, the stock market went crazy when I was in the business.

Sadly I was working for a company that was shorting it.

And then I became an office temp.

Posted by: Heather at July 1, 2009 11:02 AM

DIBS. "Investment Banking" entry level is easier than remembering how to brew all those drinks. Entry level is just a super high paying data entry monkey - ie inputting #'s into fancy built models

Posted by: more4less at July 1, 2009 11:03 AM

Starbucks training is pretty damn intense.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 1, 2009 11:06 AM

I love shrieking at HGTV- so much fun. But heather- it is sad you had to go into investment banking (my choice is always go for coffee), but as they say- one door closes and another opens. :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 11:06 AM

I was always astonished at how many shoe stores could be concentrated on one block on W. 8th St. in Manhattan & survive for years. I don't have a particular opinion about Starbucks - just don't like their coffee & want to support local business. Same w/ B&N for books except I get gift certs for them.

Posted by: Arkady at July 1, 2009 11:14 AM

Snappy, Slopey, I don't show my family my brokerage statements let alone a complete stranger! It was totally intrusive, and made me feel like I was being looked at like a criminal when I have never even had so much as a parking ticket in my life. Credit check should be enough.

I ditched the two brokers that asked me for all that crap and went with an agent and management company which asked for the broker fee, regular checks for dep, first and last, and the credit checks. Which were all pretty reasonable, except the broker fee which feels slightly 'shady' to me when the broker works for the management company.

I could tell you broker stories that would make your head spin. BH and I were treated like crap over here, and if I didn't have personal reasons for wanting to be here specifically, I would have left the area.

Oddly enough, I found the listing for our little "den of unmarried iniquity" [very funny DIBS] on Craigslist!

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 1, 2009 11:15 AM

THL...that looks like the economy version. Mine has shock absorbers inside the coil springs.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 11:17 AM

I can see why they would ask for bank statements but asking for brokerage statements is ridiculous for a rental.

Posted by: etson at July 1, 2009 11:18 AM

"Does Starbucks still make its employees go through coffee college or whatever?"

Yeah - it was a whole week's worth of paid training. lots of reading about the company's motto. stressing of being overly nice to everyone (definitely don't get that fake chipper demanor at any manhattan starbucks)

there was a lot of tasting of coffee (black of course) - i can still differentiate which part of the world a coffee comes from by it's taste, acidity etc.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 1, 2009 11:18 AM

cobble- I've posted the horror story of finding a place in BH when I was in a biracial marriage. Brokers can be real jerks (oh, well- so can tenants but I digress) and sometimes I think they believe intimidating a tenant is the only way to get a good tenant.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 11:20 AM

Hey, question for you all...I am trying to find a hotel for my b-day...I want to be out of the city for the weekend but not too far (say westchester area or something like that). I'm having trouble finding a hotel with a nice room/suite that has a jacuzzi tub in the room (my must have), a balcony would also be nice (negotiable), wifi access in the rooms (must have), room service (must have). Anyone know of anything? I'd also like to be able to get a smoking room but I realize that most hotels now are 100% smoke free so I can bend on that one.

Did you know that in about 200 years or so there will be no more true redheads born? Not that I care.

I find it sadly ironic that the politicians who represent the communities that are the least educated, least literate and most impoverished are the same politicians who oppose (and appear willing to take advantage of the current chaos) Mayoral control....
Ruben Diaz and John Sampson (among others) should be publicly castigated, driven from office and eventually indicted as the criminals they are!

So I went to The Highline yesterday and it was very very nice. Lovely walk after the rain. Bumped into Cameron Diaz while on there. She is anorexic and looks really scary.

THL, I found out why Caroline was crying about never forgiving Danielle for something in the last reunion show for RHONJ. Is that old news already?

Someone who doesn't have to dye their hair red.

What, the sign of a civilized gentleman would be to extend your hand to your perceived enemies, not just your friends.

Ken...what is the reason??? SPILL IT!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 11:54 AM

Snappy, it was along the lines of Danielle saying something to Dina's exhusband how she doesn't take good care of Lexi and doesn't give her enough time and Caroline was really pissed that Danielle got children involved and how children shouldn't be involved in personal agendas.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at July 1, 2009 11:56 AM

I apologized to you and you did not acknowledge it because you felt it was "disengenuous" You're problem is everything has to be your way. You never once could understand why I should have even commented.

Narrow minded is narrow minded. It's why you believe you can get away with all your recial slurs but god forbid anyone else says a word that you believe (wrongly) was a slur.

I might as well argue with a brick wall.

Just for a couple of weeks. DIBS/Etson, going to be midtown for lunch tomorrow. Got time for a coffee around 3:30/4:00-ish?

Posted by: the chicken at July 1, 2009 12:22 PM

Chicken--had a good time in London but was mostly work. The May Fair should be called the Meh Fair on account of its cheesy attempts to be high class while actually being over priced and inefficient. The rock stars who were part of my entourage were most displeased with the room service fare and the bar (which only served one obscure brand of czech beer that coincidentally---not--was owned by the corporate group that owns the hotel). The shows at Brixton Academy were great, and my shoot was awesome. Then got to see DMB open for Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park. The Employer (as I like to call him) opened with "London Calling." Had a nice lunch with a friend in Green Park. Was shocked by how little one can purchase (besides illicit goods and services) even in the most prime areas after mid night. My random thoughts on London...

Posted by: wasder at July 1, 2009 12:23 PM

Should be around chicken - do you have my e-mail? Think I have yours.

Posted by: etson at July 1, 2009 12:25 PM

Are you back in Brooklyn now?

Posted by: the chicken at July 1, 2009 12:26 PM

Brixton academy. Ah, my misspent youth.

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 12:27 PM

yep - will email you and DIBS a bit later.

Have to run out for some errands. Catch up with the OT later.

Posted by: the chicken at July 1, 2009 12:27 PM

"haha - glad you had a good time wasder.
Are you back in Brooklyn now?"

--Yep, back in Brooklyn. I love visiting London but I really think it would be a tough place to live. Drove me crazy that when I got home from my shoot after midnight couldn't get anything to eat or a drink in a bar.

"Brixton academy. Ah, my misspent youth."--some how I missed the dittoburg is a soapdodger (as the Aussies like to call the brits) memo. Love that venue, such energy in that room it makes shooting there very exciting.

I "lost it" quite a bit myself last week. I'll be spending a bit less time here over the next few weeks. Have some freelance work and just need to focus on a few things. [Did BRG start a trend?! ; )]

Thanks again, What, I appreciate the thought/feeling behind your note. Take care! : )

Soapdodger! Those roo-stew lovin melanoma bags.

I'm reluctant to admit it, but soapdodger is a pretty good insult.

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 12:34 PM

Dare I ask? Soapdodger?

Although I am proud (?) to say I did figure out the roo-stew insult :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 12:38 PM

I spend most Christmases on Bondi Beach in Sydney and the POMs there put you all in a bad light, wandering around sunburned and drunk in santa hats, pissing everywhere.

But god knows the yanks in London make us all look really f-in bad too!

Posted by: wasder at July 1, 2009 12:38 PM

you know bxgrl I am not sure what the provenance of soap dodger is---ditto, any thoughts. Clearly the aussies think little of the personal hygiene of their UK brethren but I don't really know why.

Posted by: wasder at July 1, 2009 12:40 PM

bxgrl,
soapdodger = dirty, lack of personal hygiene. Literally 'one that avoids soap'.

Never knew the convicts called us that.

Posted by: etson at July 1, 2009 12:41 PM

"wandering around sunburned and drunk in santa hats, pissing everywhere"

Brits do the same everywhere its sunny. I try to be the only limey vacationing at wherever I go due to that fact.

wasder, glad you had a [mostly] good trip, and yes, London seems to shut down a bit early — but isn't that true in most places outside of NYC!! [hold your fire, I know there are other places where they stay open late!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 1, 2009 12:42 PM

etson, ditto, chicken etc--any thoughts on how the Ashes is going to play out this year? I always root for you guys, as does my Sydney by way of Johannesburg father in law who taught me the love of the game. We hate the crappy sportsmanship and general muscle-headedness of the Australian side.

"London seems to shut down a bit early — but isn't that true in most places outside of NYC!! [hold your fire, I know there are other places where they stay open late!]"

True, but given the extreme expense and sacrifice of space that London requires I think one should receive some convenience in return.

Posted by: wasder at July 1, 2009 12:46 PM

I'm guessing that Aussies living in relatively new cities where they were all taking showers in contrast to poor old brits stuck in our ancient cities still taking baths or washing at the sink. When I grew up (and I only turned 40 this year) a shower was a novelty. Usually I washed at the sink and often just washed my face and "underneath the arches". Until the age of 7 we had an outside privy, and one sink for both kitchen purposes and washing purposes. When my brother and i were small enough, we still took baths in thast sink together.

All part of my over-privileged asshat upbringing.

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 12:47 PM

Precisely Snappy — she made it sound soooo dramatic. Oh, and add drama queen to my list above!! She just oozes massive insecurity. The whole thing of trying to 'take one for the team' at the 'last supper' also drove me up the proverbial wall! Does she think she's currying favor with her family by acting that way? cobble...FTI Consulting was just on CNBC...aggressively hiring. we discussed this company a few months ago. Biff knows them well. checkout their website

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 1, 2009 4:39 PM

I can't honestly say I'm looking forward to Atlanta. All the other seasons of HW bored me...Jersey is the only one that had me glued to the screen. I'm not sure anyone can live up to the personality of the NJ ladies.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 4:39 PM

I love a crawl...crawlllll honey....

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 4:40 PM

CH: I loved the Atlanta one b/c of the personalities and really just how snobby they were about all their crap!

Posted by: gemini10 at July 1, 2009 4:41 PM

I wonder if there is a blog in atlanta about the asthetics of McMansions where the commenters make fun of old, historically signicant homes.

"FTI Consulting was just on CNBC...aggressively hiring"

Will do! Thanks DIBS! : )

ON the Jersey Housewives. What is up with that bitch's hairline? Is it a weave or wig? Her hairline starts about an inch above her eyebrows. Is she a neanderthal?

"CH: I loved the Atlanta one b/c of the personalities and really just how snobby they were about all their crap!"

Gem, I'm sure I'll watch the first one, just because I'm SO DAMN hooked on these crazy people. But I don't know if they will impress me with the degree of COCKAMAMIE BS the other women have! ; ) I'm pretty jaded and cynical!

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 1, 2009 4:46 PM

Adam...which one are you talking about?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 4:52 PM

Cobble, Kim is the Daniele of the crew. In one of the promos on Bravo Nene (LOVE Nene) is seen yanking Kim's wig.

Oh, they got BS in Atl. trust that.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 4:54 PM

Teresa, has to be Teresa. I have something really nasty I could say, but I'll be good!

Have a good night all!

Posted by: cobblehiller at July 1, 2009 4:54 PM

THL - yes I saw that nene/dwayne trailer - toooooo funny - I cant wait

DH - um what IS up with every house in Atlanta looking the same? however I do like a lot of their older housing stock that were probably built in 1920s/1930's - those are actually really cute, and many owners tried to keep some of the details at least

CH: you won't be disappointed with Atlanta

Posted by: gemini10 at July 1, 2009 4:57 PM

the NJ one was the only one i really found funny, but i loved nene from atlanta and some of the others on that one. nyc was okay but i missed most of it. i never saw the oc i dont think. not looking forward to the real housewives of dc. DC?!?

cobble, i guess im just scared of having the apt to myself for a week cuz i have to take care of my dog, my roommates dog, and then go and take care of my roommates boyfriend's cat in his apartment (just go and feed it really and pet it for a little bit i guess). tho im a big boy i should be able to handle it. i handled it fine the last time they went on vacation, but that wasnt for a whole week! hahah

Wait...someone gets their weave ripped off? I'll be watching :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 4:58 PM

rob- we're always here for you anyway. Let us know if the solititude freaks you out and we'll get together.

Some just posted on the rental thread that they demand to see the kid's report cards if they are over 13 years old, in addition to everything else. Have we all lost our minds?

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 5:06 PM

I'm freaking out by what that nitwit just said in the rental thread.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 5:10 PM

I just freaked out with you, THL :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 5:13 PM

Report cards? For real? WTF???

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 5:17 PM

Bxgrl - are you kidding
I gave up over there. that WOG character is too much

Posted by: gemini10 at July 1, 2009 5:26 PM

He's so convinced he's right. He just asked me about when I applied for my mortgage. Big frickin difference dude.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 5:28 PM

I'm starting to think WOG and Jack are trolls who are enjoying being ridiculous. If they are in fact serious, then we can laugh at them because I can't imagine any renter, particularly in this real estate climate, agreeing to part with all that personal and invasive info. Their apts will be empty forever and next thing you know we'll be looking at their house as the next forclosure of the day on B'Stoner.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 5:29 PM

wrath jsut asked you again about applying for a mortgage- then he used homeowners who defaulted on equity loans and sub primes as an example of why RENTERS should give them all this information. It is too funny!

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 5:30 PM

Mortgage applications and rental applications are apples and giraffes. No close comparison at all!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 5:30 PM

Bxgirl, if anything, that is the perfect reason why your suggestion should be taken that the LL provide their financial info to the tenant lest they wind up on the street post-foreclosure!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at July 1, 2009 5:34 PM

You know, the odd thing is, because i do rent from a friend, I really do understand and sympathize with homeowners too. I know tenants can be great or horrible. But these guys! I bet their favorite book is 1984.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 5:38 PM

WOG IS crazy to expect people would provide such detailed information solely to rent and apartment, but honestly if it makes him comfortable as a LL to ask for it - he has that right. Just like the prospective tenant has the right to say "Later, man." Unfortunately, I suspect that has worked for him w/some people who just don't know any better.

Posted by: East New York at July 1, 2009 5:39 PM

ENY- yes he does. But if this becomes the required norm for everyone- and it looks like between landlords, brokers and rental agents it will, it will open up huge cans of worms. Jack looks at report cards of tenant's children. How long before someone makes that into a discrimination suit because that child has a learning disability they are trying to address? Where does a landlord get the idea he is in any position to know the full circumstances of someone's life? Or have the right to them? We all went nuts over how overbearing the homeland Security Act was- but here we have people demanding the same powers to personal and private information. It's just nuts.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 6:07 PM

I really don't think there's any chance of it becoming the norm, bxgrl. I've been both tenant and LL and this is the first I've ever heard of something like this. Most landlords, I suspect, would agree it's unnecessary as well as invasive. But I agree it's nuts to expect someone would provide this information just to rent an apartment.

Posted by: East New York at July 1, 2009 6:16 PM

Bxgrl, they're not doing this to people like us. They're doing it to people who perhpas don't have the means or connections to fight back. People do it because they don't know better or are scared not to. They expect it's the norm.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at July 1, 2009 6:16 PM

Jeeze, everyone is throwing the word WOG around. Where is the What. Its the W-word people.

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 6:20 PM

I hear what you're saying ditto, but this is the U.S. - that term is not considered an insult among Americans and certainly doesn't mean what it means elsewhere.

Posted by: East New York at July 1, 2009 6:25 PM

phew

Posted by: dittoburg at July 1, 2009 6:27 PM

ENY, I hope so you're right. I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy nut theorist (I hate those!)and I don't have anything to hide- oh, wait....ok...maybe the cats...but it just feels so offensive. And I don't like being vulnerable to someone's whim.

On the other hand, since I have this masochistic need to try to be fair, I would guess most homeowners who rent probably feel just as vulnerable.

Posted by: bxgrl at July 1, 2009 6:51 PM

i gotta ask wog means... anyway, someone just pulled up in a car and gave me a nice 100 dollar bill :) (it was my roommate's bf for going to feed his cat while they are away). woo woo! good it's a cash transaction. dont want p\/ssy feeding to show up on a bank statement in case i ever want to rent again! hahaha sorry if that was crass. but it's just as crass to ask to look at someone's report cards.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 1, 2009 6:54 PM

Bxgrl, To the homeowners I'd say, "If you can't stand the heat buy a single family."

It's a business and you can't just do whatever you please when you run a business. Tenants have rights. That extends to potential tenants as well.
