Looks Like Lucali is Coming to the South Slope!

lucalli%202%20soslo%20072009.JPG
Eater has an "insider" saying that the rumored expansion of the much-lauded Carroll Gardens pizzeria Lucali to the South Slope will be helmed by the brother of Mark Iacono, the pizza-maker behind the original restaurant. Two guys working on plumbing in the Slope space yesterday, which is on 6th Avenue and 20th Street, said the rumor is true. One added that the place is probably going to be called "Lucali 2." Although Lucali is not confirming the rumor, seems like signs are pointing to yes on this one!

I lived near Lucali while they renovated the space before opening the restaurant. It took them forever.

Luigi's pizza on 5th between 20 and 21 is pretty decent. But I'm psyched to have another good pizzeria in the hood.

this it outrageously good news.

lucali's is the BEST. it will be a struggle not to eat there every night of the week.

somewhat arbitrarily, i'd say this is a sure sign that the nabe has arrived (or is over, depending on how you look at it.) north slope has, er, strollers, and south slope has lucali's. no contest.

I'm a little "meh" on Lucali. I lived around the corner from them since they opened until a few months ago (although I still frequent the area.) On a bad day (1/2 of the times I've had pizza there) it wasn't "the best" although its still the only pizza my husband will eat. But the thing about pizza is: its the type of food you get in a hurry when you don't want to cook (at least in my mind.) So to wait that long for pizza seems to be an anathema to me. Plus its expensive pizza. For the price we would just go to Fragole instead. So yeah, living literally around the block from America's best pizza, I ate it exactly twice. Decent pizza, just wildly inconvenient and hard to justify for the cost...hmmmmm.

The only pizza I really like in the hood is that guy on 4th ave by the R train. Look forward to this.

Peppino's on 5th Ave between 10th and 11th is good.
