Help from the Feds for Community Gardens?

Via a tweet from @xrisfg (aka Flatbush Gardener), news of a new bill introduced last week in Congress called the Community Gardens Act of 2009. Proposed by Jay Inslee of Washington State, the bill's primary purpose is to "establish community gardens to enhance the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions." If passed, the bill would enable community members to apply for federal money to acquire property, construct a garden or pay for operations. Shovel-ready!

is this at the actual flatbush gardens complex? (formerly the older notoriously dangerous Vandeveer housing projects?) i was thinking about an apt there a while back, it's stabalized, and relatively cheap, but i dont know much else about it. stuff online about it are pretty vague. the commercials for it make it look like a low rent version of stuy town. sorry, if this is a different flatbush gardens you are talking about. they do in their ads boast all the greenery around the complex..

Not sure how you came to the conclusion that this post was about the Flatbush Gardens. Pretty sure that some rep from Washington State wouldn't introduce a bill to specifically benefit that complex. If it is the mention of the "Flatbush Gardener" that confused you maybe a simple click on the name would have cleared things up.

I think the bill is a great idea- hopefully someone in Washington has a brain and agrees. They should pass it- its good on so many levels.

DIBS, I'm trying to imagine what a republican community garden would look like. Seems a contradiction in terms. A republican garden would, by definititon, need to be a private garden, unless it belongs to a church, dontcha think? But if you had a say, what kinds of republican things would you want to grow in a community garden?

Same stuff they grow in Iowa (corn), Ohio (cucumbers, berries, onions), Illinois, etc, but without the lead content of wholesome organic veggies grown in our wonderful Brooklyn soil along the Gowanus....
There's a couple of good reasons produce is grown upstate and not with in the city limits,'get your Greenpoint Peppers!, naturaly florescent in green, red and orange neon'
