Battle of Brooklyn: Yards Documentary Trailer Drops

Clinton Hill-based documentary company Rumur (the same folks who helped produce a bunch of short videos for us a couple of years back) has just released the trailer for the Atlantic Yards film it's been working on for the last six years. You can read about how the producers got involved with the project here. You can pre-order the DVD or contribute to the project here.

uh, sorry. that is the worst trailer ever. i mean when have you ever seen a 6 minute movie trailer? and lets all face it, this is a niche local issue. do people even in bay ridge say care about the atlantic yards? nope. preaching to the choir at best here.

Atlantic Yards, eminent domain, David v. Goliath is not a niche local issue. Sorry to say, Return of Randlph. and the trailer appears to be a promotion of the movie to raise awareness of it and money for it, not a preview of a completed film.

What does this Daniel guy, the one who owns the last remaining apartment, hope to achieve?? It seems that all his protest, at the end of the day, have resulted in a significant net negative.

Now we have a whole in the middle of Brooklyn that risks not being filled for decades because one man decides he wants to be that hold out. I am all for the David and Goliath story where the underdog triumphs in the end, but I kind of like that story in the context of a "Rocky" film. Not when it negatively impacts the lives of millions of people.

This man was given a more than fair value for his home (particularly in these troubled real estate markets). He has held out and now millions of New Yorkers are left with a hole in the ground. That has become too expensive to fill because of the delays Danny boy has cost.

Thanks Dan!

Fine to blame Dan but there are a whole lot of community people who don't want AY as its planned, don't feel like having to pay for it and think it is way out sized. Not to mention, the whole eminent domain issue. Read the meeting report- it becomes obvious FCR, ESDC and the MTA are all in collusion, while trying to convince everyone what a great deal this is by pitting groups against each other. Does no one find it racist to hire a bunch of Black men to walk into the meeting to disrupt it by chanting? Can we say cynical? Especially since communities like Crown Heights North are part of the opposition and they are in the majority Black.

Bxgrl, can you prove the sonctruction workers were hired? I've heard that claim made previously but have yet to see any evidence. I don't find it unlikely at all that a bunch of (black) construction workers would want to see the project go ahead. I'm not saying FCR, ESDC and the MTA haven't worked together on this - I'm inclined to believe they have. But I don't think that anti-AY people realize there are stakeholders who genuinely want to see the project go ahead beacuse they see it beneficial to them - and not because they were "hired" by anyone.

According to the meeting report, these were a bunch of guys literally herded into the room together at some later point in the meeting. They began then chanting (they have pictures on the DDDB site). They were not there for the whole meeting.

I understand and agree that Black construction workers need these jobs- but considering FCR did not use union guys to demo the Wards Bakery, but subcontracted out to non-union labor, I sincerely have my doubts these guys will wind up with much of anything. They're being played and that makes me really angry.

ENY- they were chanting "Go Home" and (I think it was )Build's leader, Caldwell, who seemed to promote the idea that "real " Brooklynites support AY and the rest were either racist, classist or fake Brooklynites.

"the idea that "real " Brooklynites support AY and the rest were either racist, classist or fake Brooklynites."

Admittedly, that is just ridiculous!

Posted by: East New York at July 24, 2009 11:37 AM

yes, it is, but it is what Bruce Ratner's chief community supporter said and has been saying for years. you think that is by accident?

Posted by: brokeland at July 24, 2009 12:29 PM

"stakeholders", ???

Are there really stakeholders involved in this at present? I mean aside from Bruce Ratner and his crew of Nets owners. Which Brooklyn residents hold a stake in AY and what does their stake currently consist of?

I'm just curious.

"Which Brooklyn residents hold a stake in AY and what does their stake currently consist of?"

If you libe in the area, ot mugith gain empoylment or housing as a result of the development, you have a "stake" in the future of this project. I didn't intend that to necessarily mean a financial position.

Let's try that sentence one more time:

"If you live in the area, or might gain empoylment or housing as a result of the development...."

"employment."

Jeez. Blame it on Friday.

There's SO much evidence that FCR packs the room with the rent-a-crowd mob. I was at a community mtg at City Tech a couple years back sitting next to a sweet high school kid who was only too happy to tell me that he got t-shirts, hats, fast food coupons and other goodies in exchange for attending the mtg. I was actually worried for him when the carpentry union goons he was there with looked like they were ready to pound him for giving me the skinny!

Nice story grand army, but I'm afraid that isn't exactly what most reasonable people would consider actual evidence.

Posted by: East New York at July 24, 2009 4:05 PM

Grand Army, what evidence do you have, aside from the anecdotes you cited?

I'd bet my right arm that this movie contained quotes and interview that are 95% opposed to AY. Highly doubtful that it'll be balanced.
