Streetlevel: Yummy Taco Opens in South Slope

A reader wrote in to inform us that she returned from vacation last week to find that, while she was gone, the Chinese restaurant at 1106 8th Avenue at 11th Street in the South Slope transformed into something called Yummy Taco! Does anyone know if this is straight-up Mexican or one of the Mexican-Chinese hybrids that has been increasing in popularity? GMAP

There are lots of Yummy tacos out there as well as functional equivalents like Fresco Tortilla. They focus on lower end mexican or TEX-MEX type of food.
They are owned by Asians and tend to be run in a similar style to the low-end Chinese that populate the city.

Straight up mexican run by Chinese. They make the tortillas fresh and the food's
OK. But judging by the lack of foot traffic, it may not be there too long.

"tend to be run in a similar style to the low-end Chinese that populate the city."

My favorite of these places is Super Happy Taco.
I've never eaten there. I just like the name.

I think it is pretty obvious. I don't believe you or "a reader" returning from vacation doesn't know what Yummy Taco is and who runs them, unless of course you just arrived from Ohio and didn't have you contacts in. From the picture it looks like your reader was close enough to see Asians running the place.
Slow news day eh....

I love Crummy Taco! The flagship store is on 6th ave and Flatbush on the edge of the Slope!

Taco Poblano on Broadway between Throop and Stuyvesant is really authentic. Try the barbacoa..its real goat!!!! Also the burittos lengua are good. Very, very cheap with a bar attached on the side.
Unless you like authentic Mexican soupy guacamole don't order the guac.

This is one of the predicted signs of the apocalypse. Yummy Taco is the worst. I wouldn't be caught dead eating in there.
Posted by: infinitejester at June 3, 2009 2:22 PM
I love these places. 3 bucks for a bowl of rice and chicken.
sold

jester...the outcome of the apocalypse will be that only la cucaracha survive.

DIBS, we're trained to ignore the dumb ass remarks from stupid people. We work hard, save the USD, and wait for those dumb asses to come begging for loans
Posted by: more4less at June 3, 2009 2:29 PM
this used to be dragon garden, so I'm assuming it's chinese/mexican.
Posted by: new2hood at June 3, 2009 2:30 PM
La cucaracha has no marijuana que fumar.

the "flag ship" store on flatbush is a hoot, they were once [9 years ago] passing off wattery ketchup as salsa sauce for a day cause they ran out... i never went back, but always tell non-new yorkers about the mexican/chinese/sushi joints in brooklyn... [including the place on newkirk ave with all 3 on the sign]
Posted by: sender9999 at June 3, 2009 2:35 PM
does one have to be italian to make a pizza? does one have to be a martian to make a nitrogren drink? no. tacos are just a bunch of crap on a tortilla. not brain science! yummy tho. yummy taco, just the name tho, sounds soooooo x rated.

rob...most of the Chinese take-out places in bed Stuy are run by Cantonese Chinese and they are absolutely the worst Chinese food I've ever had.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 3, 2009 2:39 PM
chinese food is pretty gross though. i have neven eaten chinese food before without feeling like complete illness afterwards. tho, ive really only done the take-out chinese talk out joint kind of food, so not sure what traditional chinese food is like, or even if it exists? like even just a plate of steam vegetables make me feel gross after eating it. why is that?

No, Rob, you do not have to be of the ethnicity that first created a cuisine, but it might help. But I swear to g-d the Puerto Rican pizza under me in Williamsburg was the worst ever...until it was taken over by a Trini-Indian--that s#it was like straight tomato paste on matzo with low-fat soy-cheese.

stop altervoce you're making me hungry
Posted by: infinitejester at June 3, 2009 2:48 PM
There's some Italian guy named Ray Bari who makes the worst pizza I've ever had.

If you want authentic mexican head down to sunset park. I followed this blog route on saturday. Off the charts ! Pig skin taco for serious foodies only though...the Pombazo is a serious carbohydrate boost !

10thStreet...those pictures are making me drool. I spent most of my adult life in Chicago where there's lots and lots of great mexican.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 3, 2009 3:02 PM
The one and only time I ordered from Yummy Taco I got baby corn and water chestnuts in my veggie burrito. So wrong.
Posted by: yobalove at June 3, 2009 3:17 PM
Best Mexican definitely in Sunset Park, but Tacos Nuevo Mexico is a good alternative (probably the only one) in South Slope.
Posted by: basementalist at June 3, 2009 3:40 PM
That's what you get for ordering a veggie burrito. So wrong. :)

Chino-Latino restaurants based on types of places in Cuba used to be very trendy in the 80's. Don't see many of those around anymore?
Posted by: 1910 at June 3, 2009 3:52 PM
GROSS GROSS so sorry go into the one on Bergen and Faltbush you'll want to puke.
Posted by: BrooklynRooster at June 3, 2009 3:54 PM
If you look at the picture above it reads "New Yummy Taco Sister's"
Posted by: IMBY at June 3, 2009 4:00 PM
I've never had haggis and I'm 50% Scottish. I love tripe though...get it mostly in Italian places as a tripe stew...even better with parmigiana on it. MMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 3, 2009 4:15 PM
*rob* - your last post was so lame. have a Chinese friend or a knowledgeable non-Chinese friend take you out to Flushing or Brooklyn or Manhattan Chinatown for authetnic Chinese food. Some of the restaurants cook Hong-Kong style, my personal favorite. You have not been eating authentic Chinese food, you are eating what Chinese people think stupid white/black/orange people would like. Explore a little - sheesh!
Posted by: tiptoe at June 3, 2009 4:16 PM
there are a plethora of extremely low quality establishments out there. however, there are good places out there.
I like the peking duck house in chinatown and Tang Pavilion in Midtown.
Posted by: slick at June 3, 2009 5:16 PM
What's funny is I was going to correct BrooklynRooster who was saying new yummy taco's flagship is bergen and flatbush, becuase I thought it was bergen and park place, but turns out it's new HAPPY taco there. Not new yummy. New happy taco's a different chinese mexican chain, find it surprisingly ok, especially for the price.
The worst mexican food i've had in NYC was at the California Tacqueria on Court St, i'm pretty sure the staff is Mexican...
Posted by: woodys at June 3, 2009 5:54 PM
My current fave regular city-slice pizza (ya know... sauce out of can, mozz out of bag) is Georgio's. It's near Wall Street and made by Mexicans.

The Yummy Taco on Church Ave. in Kensington is just fine, but I don't go out of my way for it.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 3, 2009 6:56 PM
You guys have it wrong, you have to think of Yummy Taco as Asian Fusion.
Posted by: Grumpy at June 3, 2009 8:33 PM
Oh for crying out loud go to any Mexican place in Bushwick, it's authentic and good.
Posted by: mopar at June 3, 2009 10:03 PM
If this is related to the one on Flatbush - avoid!
blech. dirty. filthy. ruined that entire building.
The old awning said, "The Fresh Tortilla As Taco Tex-Mexican Restaurant"
The left that awning up for way too long before replacing it. Was torn, covered in soot. Had remnants of "grand opening" flags from about 8 years earlier. Sadly, the new sign isn't worded nearly as well.

Yummy Taco on Flatbush is great. I'm super ultra bummed that the South Slope location doesn't have bean curd. Bean curd burritos are the only thing I order. Why be a ChinaMex joint if you don't have bean curd?!?!
