Streetlevel: Vermont Market To Re-Open (a Decade Later)

The odd story of the Vermont Market & Pharmacy took another twist this weekend when Lost City spotted a flurry of activity at the storefront at 513 Henry Street. Asked what was going on, one of the workers at the site on Saturday revealed that the folksy-looking shop would open soon "as a kind of half-store, half-soda fountain." Locals may recall that the store closed suddenly in 1998 after a couple of years of operation under circumstances mysterious enough that The Times decided to investigate. Some kind of soft opening is being targeted for later this month. Interesting!

They've been clearing stuff out for weeks. You can see the floor now. There's at least 3 coffee places within a block so seems like it will be pretty mellow, a cute little place. (non-sequitur?)

That's nice. Is it still under the same ownership? There's a few stores like this in the area. Never any great mystery as the Times thought -- just an owner who had a lot of papers to sort through.

"...just an owner who had a lot of papers to sort through." What an amusing understatement.

I'll believe it when I see it open.

I've lived across the street from this little eyesore for years, so it is finally nice to see some progress. The place was so full old stacked newspapers that it just looked like a big fire hazard.
