StreetLevel: Slope Card Store Getting Bigger Digs
The very cute 5th Avenue card/gift shop Scaredy Kat is trading its current storefront for a larger one across the street, in the recently vacated Star of India space near the corner of President. The business is about to celebrate its 10-year anniversary and plans to be up and running in its new space the week after Father's Day.

I was surprised it took this long for Star of India to fold. The food was sub-par, even for Park Slope Indian food standards, and the place was always empty.
Glad to see that Scaredy Kat appears to be thriving.

Does Scaredy Kat plan to sell drugs or something? How can you make the rent (and payroll) on 7th Ave. by selling cards?

They are on 5th and sell interesting/amusing cards, gifts, toys, etc., including a lot of local themed stuff.
They are definitely not "just another card store", and the other store was so cramped that you couldn't turn around without bumping into yourself, so a bigger space is not a bad idea.
As for the rent... who knows. Too much rent has killed many a promising business.
Perhaps their new landlord has seen the writing on the wall for commercial real estate and decided that maybe squeezing every last dime out of a tenant is not a great idea if it will force the tenant into bankruptcy.
Just a thought... I don't really think any commercial landlord thinks that way.

Scaredy Kat has all kinds of cool stuff. I bought the bf's kitchen clock there.
I've definitely found it more useful than the vast majority of the boutiques on 5th that come and go.
