StreetLevel: Dean Street Can Eat Cake
About a month ago a new bakery called Cake Ambiance opened on Dean Street, near the corner of Flatbush. According to the shop's website, it specializes in all sorts of confections, and the business runs baking classes. Anyone checked it out yet?

speaking of cakes, anyone know a place with good german chocolate in bklyn? i think the best thing about magnolia is not their cupcakes, but their german choc cake. and black hound for their busy bee marzipan/chocolate cake. bklyn has to have a good cake place.

Maybe you can go see if this place has good German Chocolate, as I know some good cake places, but wouldn't feel right about recommending them on a thread about a new cake shop.

This place seems to always be closed when we have tried to check out their cakes
not sure what the deal is - but I would think keeping it open on a weekend eve would be prime time...

hmm, looking at their site they look more like a custom order shop rather than takeout.

"The Cake Ambiance?" They couldn't think up a better name?

can you really "specialize in all sorts"?

Very nice people, but really tiny cupcakes.

i've passed by a couple of times in the past week. their "ambiance" does nothing for me.
goldie - i'm not a fan of anything from magnolia. have tried a variety of things at catered parties. you couldn't pay me to stand in that line of SATC wannabes at their store. billy's bakery is my favorite in this genre. as for brooklyn, i like baked in red hook a lot. but not sure if they have german chocolate cake.

wintropst:
as I have said a million times - for great cupcakes go to out of the kitchen dowon on hudson and i beleive Charles street inthe west village
Billy's is awesome too - I have to say I like Crumbs as well
ENY - thank you! - that name is dumb

winthropst, i forgot about baked. it is good but a difficult trip to make except for occassional biking weekend.
i just remembered that i love ozzies almond croissants (not sure who they buy them from).
havent heard of billys, but b/w you and gemini, sounds like a must-visit.

out of the kitchen is on leroy & hudson - i used to live down the block. they were a few blocks north in a different life. i will give their cupcakes a try - i usually just eat savory stuff there. a bit overpriced though.
billy's was opened by a former employee of magnolia. he sold his share of the bakery to his partners to help pay for his sex change. he appeared on martha stewart during this time - his/her appearance didn't seem to faze martha. no surpise to me. i think billy's also opened a 2nd location recently in tribeca.

I have a sweet spot for Sweet Melissa - and Joyce on Vanderbilt has great desserts - but the top shop is Cousin Johns on 7th. Cake Ambiance has their work cut out for them.

I just got two small yellow cupcakes there. Super expensive and truly awful. We threw them away mostly uneaten before walking out the door. I posted a longer review on Chowhound, but I would not recommend this place.
