StreetLevel: Cafe Grumpy Now Open in the South Slope
Cafe Grumpy, the coffee shop with locations in Greenpoint and Chelsea, now has a new outpost on 7th Avenue between 11th and 12th streets. The small storefront was previously home to the clothing store Lola. Grumpy is set up more for takeout than lounging; the narrow shop only has a few seats and a couple of benches. Click through for a pic of the menu.

This place makes a DIVINE cup of coffee. One of the best I've had in the U.S.
I've already been quite a few times...
Cute place too.

was there yesterday. excellent ethiopian yergacheffe. as i said before, great coffee from a clover needs no milk or sugar. its only a little more than starbucks, and worth it.
unfortunately only one table to stand around. this stinks in the summer b/c who wants to walk in the heat with a coffee?

sorry to be such a wimpo, but I am one of those coffee drinkers that likes milk and sugar. Soo is the coffee brewed so strongly that it would require me to add a half cup of milk and 4 tablespoons of sugar to make it drinkable?

That's the thing Gemini....it's quite strong, but not bitter at all. I think you'll just find that you'll want to add substantially less milk and sugar than you usually do. That was my experience. I'm not a coffee expert, but this stuff just tastes great and clean. Not like the sewer water that Starbucks passes off as coffee.

given that starbucks purchased the company that makes the clover machines, you might want to get used to the style now before theyre in all your starbucks rob. :)

I bet the machines that get put in Starbucks stores get "dumbed down." There's some speculation that they won't sell the machines outside the Starbucks system now and won't service what has already been sold. I suspect that might be part urban myth.

ok I will try it!!!

I agree, Dave. I also think that coffee brewing has so much to do with the beans and the way they are roasted. If/when Starbucks starts using these machines, I think it could have a negative impact on their business because it takes longer to make a coffee on a Clover. I think people are more apt to wait 3 minutes for a good cup of coffee at an independent or smaller chain, than they are to wait that long at Starbucks.
It's like if McDonalds starting taking 10 minutes for a burger instead of 2. They'd be doomed.

I agree, 11217. I don't go to Starbucks anyway.

I also meant to add that there is a big difference between a good cup of coffee and a strong one (Starbucks).

Cafe :( makes me :)
Another great addition to South Slope...I wish it/them the best of luck. Hopefully its roasting/brewing pedigree and yummy coffee contributes to it lasting longer than the other coffee shop that was in the retail space where the salon is now (seen in the picture). I love my 'hood, and this stretch of 7th has certainly seen its fair share of shop closings recently. Mazel mazel, Grumpy.

I don't think I have, Rob. I haven't been to a McDonalds in probably 2 or 3 years. Do they take a long time to make stuff down there...?
Posted by: 11217 at June 29, 2009 3:01 PM
ive only been in there like twice, but yeah they were super slow.

agree that sbux may 'dumb down' the machines for cost and even time of prep, their economies of scale may help on the cost issue right out of the gate. i dont see them putting these in every store, but from a marketing perspective this may be a machine that gets layered in rather than replace existing drip machines to create a multi-tiered pricing strategy. i.e. you can get a regular drip for 1.50, or a clover coffee for 2.00.
all just speculation for now.

Mazel tov, indeed.
Love the PS symbol in front - a stroller (and a Bugaboo at that!).

I never realized what a following this place has. I'll have to stop in and try a cup!
