Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 9:24 AM
This is so wrong. Did we not learn anything yesterday? This is like poking a sleeping bear during hibernation. The What is going to wake up really mad. lol

craigslist is free, rob.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 9:24 AM
oops....Rob don't be mad.
Posted by: faithful at June 25, 2009 9:25 AM
dave i will not resort to craigslist to find a boyfriend! that's only for sex anyway. tho i did find my last boyfriend who i was with for like 6 1/2 years in a gay AOL chat room. so i should have known from the beginning what he was all about. im not looking for gay trash. im looking for someone with substance lol. this is going to be impossible, isnt it?
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 25, 2009 9:28 AM
Mr. B should remove that first post.
Of course, if he does that and then leaves this post, everyone will think I was referring to Kens' FGVOTD!
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 25, 2009 9:30 AM
Obviously, Park Dope read yesterday's OT.
I think s/he is making light of the situation.
A joke.

You never find them when you're actually looking, rob.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 9:31 AM
Rob, I have a couple of friends that are looking.... One for a serious relationship.
We need to clean you up though, he is picky. I say you spend that 100 bucks on new clothes and we'll find you a BF for free. BTW, great attitude :o).
I can't pick up a girl for the life of me at a bar but I can be a totally good gay wingman.

that's not always true dave, just an old wive's tale. my goal is to find a boyfriend by the 4th of july. and ill find him! the only problem is that im very strict on age. the person can only be + or - 5 years of my own age. and i feel like every guy who is my age right now (32) only wants to be with 18 year olds or 50 year olds :-/

Speaking of I Am The Walrus, has anybody heard or seen The Fab Faux? They aren't an imitation band like Beatlemania, but rather a group of very accomplished musicians (including the basist Will Lee from David Letterman, the guitarist from Conan, etc.) who play incredible renditions of Beatle songs, perfectly recreating them, without trying to identical vocally. They are playing in September in New York and are incredible live. Check out this version of I Am The Walrus:

Park Dope's first post at 9:20 is both obviously a joke and obviously still offensive. It should be taken down. Very different usage than the one what attacked DIBS for yesterday.

Some beers are better than others. But you're right, each to his own tastes. I abhor all thos trendy wheaty beers. They're universally awful, and indestinguishable from each other.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 10:02 AM
possibly more dave, havent analyzed. ive been called them all and i dont let them bother me, even use some with friends as well. you can take the power out of the words or let them anger you.
dont get bossy. 500 posts a day doesnt give you that right.
Posted by: goldie at June 25, 2009 10:03 AM
oh i know dave. can't stand the gazillion stupid brands of the same tasting beer but all they do is design some random stick, try to come up with a funny name, and slap it on the bottle and charge 10 bux. i think that is what is wrong with our country.

Beer actually has more characteristics that distinguish it from others then wine does. That said, cheap beer will always have a special place in my heart.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 10:07 AM
" I abhor all thos trendy wheaty beers."
Wheat beer = girl beer (even though I was drinking Hoegaarden at Rope)
I hate when people ask for a Blue Moon, and the bartender is like "sorry we only have hoegaarden" - and then the patron orders a bud light.
Hoegaarden >>>>> Blue Moon

Anybody who drinks Bud Light, Coors Light or any Miller product is a complete douche.

"Anybody who drinks Bud Light, Coors Light or any Miller product is a complete douche."
I love Miller High Life - It's the champagne of beers!!
Crappy american light beer is necessary for the summer, when it's hot and your outside BBQing.
Anyone who drinks Corona or Heineken is silly. Those are TERRIBLE beers.

I don't like Heineken that's sold here. I like the stuff you get in Asia, it's a different brew, closer to Carlsberg. Corona is fine for a light summer beer, no lime please.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 10:19 AM
You guys are quick off the mark today.
"Anybody who drinks Bud Light, Coors Light or any Miller product is a complete douche."
Yep, I'm a douche. But guess you knew that already.

Corona Light is just way too light.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 10:20 AM
I like all those gentrified wheat beers one sees in gentrified Asshat fauxdegas. Yes, they all taste (almost) the same, but that just means they're all good.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 25, 2009 10:20 AM
Coors light - wouldn't that include every single college student in America? That was the beer of choice when I went to school.
Posted by: tiptoe at June 25, 2009 10:20 AM
Dave, that's why I drink it...won't get too drunk too fast :) Helps me keep the 'girls' in the shirt!

Also, Guinness is the best beer in the world.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 25, 2009 10:22 AM
Dave - have you ever tried Sol beer? Similar to Corona - but I find it much better.
A good way to know if a beer is really good is to drink it at room temp, as all alcohol is meant to be enjoyed.

much rather have a nice glass of white wine and yes I like Riesling or a good rose' - there I said it! - sure and while I am admitting my lack of wine sophisication, I also like a good moscato or zinfindel too

I don't like beer, either. I never understood how it could be such a thirst quencher in summer heat. But hey, whatever. When I was in college, I had a summer job at an Elizabethan dinner theatre. We made meade every night for the patrons. You can ferment just about anything, and I think people have tried just about everything, over the centuries.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at June 25, 2009 10:43 AM
"Also, Guinness is the best beer in the world."
The Guinness in Ireland is way better than the Guinness in the US. There is even a difference between the Guinness in Ireland and Guinness in Scotland and England. It doesn't travel well (especially in large quantities inside one's stomach).

InsertSnappyNameHere, when I said "I am offended by this!"
I was referring to the name; Negro Modelo.
How can YOU not be offended by the name but by other things. You should ban that beverage and there should be outcry for a name change.
And just for the record: I'm not really offended by the name, I said that to try to make a point as the use of that word should / coulg be offensive to some.
We all need to lighten up a bit and realize what satire is.

DH, I like a whole bunch but most are not sold in non-russian bars. I like pravda vodka and russian standard. I get bad headaches from some vodka's (including smirnoff and absolut). So I usually stick to Grey Goose or Three Olives if they have either. Some places actually have very good tasting house vodkas but I usually don't go for those since I don't want to play a test dummy.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 25, 2009 10:57 AM
Three Olives is really good!! I forgot about that one.
Also, shockingly enough "Tito's" vodka is really really good. It's the only american vodka on the market and it's only 15 bucks in a liquor store.

"much rather have a nice glass of white wine and yes I like Riesling or a good rose' - there I said it! - sure "
While some--not all--Rose is crap, Riesling is considered by many to be the most interesting and complex white wine grape, Pinot Noir being the equiv in red. Altho I love a big fat juicy California cab myself.

The best sake comes from Niigata. It's because of the quality, fresness and purity of the water. The best sake is really, really dry and typically more interesting than a martini.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 11:09 AM
gemini- you and I have the same tastes in wine it seems. I loved some of the NYS wines my sister and brother-in-law used to bring home after trips upstate. Those seem to have disapppeared- at least I never see them anymore. We've ben drinking a lot of Australian wine.
snappy- you're right! That was one lesson I learned quickly. (of course I had to learn the same lesson re vodka, tequila, wine..... I'm an avid student)
Posted by: bxgrl at June 25, 2009 11:10 AM
Riesling is great - really the only white wine I like actually - maybe a Sav Blanc.
Pinot Noir can be really good or really bad in my experiences. All "organic" wines SUCK!!!
I love a big cali cab as well, or a bordeaux (i think 98 or 99 was a good year)

WOW, I just read yesterday's open thread. Talk about an epic battle of the brains LMAO.
For the record, I gave up on Gin. It makes the frontal lobes of your brain hemorrhage, and the hangovers are ruthless.
I switched to Vodka, and the occasional Patron.

Rob, if you wish to date and establish a relationship with someone of substance, as you put it, you need to be someone of substance yourself. You should volunteer your time at charitable organizations such as God's love, we deliver, or meals on wheels, or Gay Men's Health Alliance, or some other group that attempts, in whatever small way, to help others and improve the city in some way.
I think it will make you feel proud of yourself and it will improve your social life too I'm sure.

I think Australian wine is pretty awful, although better than South African wine, which I find undrinkable.
The only places that produce really excellent winea are:
France
Italy
California
Spain
Portugal
German wines are the pits, Chile has good wine but the best of it stays in Chile, New Zealand should stick with growing sheep and NY State wine is right up there with Tunisian wines.

Get a second id, Adam. You can use the original when you're posting as your usual, wisdom-distributing self (and I do mean that), and the second for when you're letting your hair down. Most of us have had 1 or more user ids over the years. I changed mine early on because of horrible trolls, as did Montrose. Several us us have other ids we used sometimes in fun (are you out there Miss Chiff?).

Normally don't post here but Denton, I have to stick up for Rose wines! They're a great summer drink, and traditional French ones can be incredible.
There's definitely a lot of crap organic wines, but also a lot of good ones. I've had some great stuff from the importer Jenny & Francois. They're worth looking for.

dh...legally in Japan it isn't "sake" or "seishu" if it is not clear or strained.
It's a variety that has a following for sure but true sake afficionados prefer sake from polished rice and clear. Also, the best sake is always served cold.
If you just search Wikepedia it goes through the types of sake. It's very informative.
BTW, one of the best and most extensive collections of scotch I have ever seen in my life is at the Old Imperial Bar at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The Japanese really love their scotch.

Haha Bxgrl - I always order Sutter Home White Zinfandel when I'm at the OLIVE GARDEN (makes face at East New York)
Interesting Dave - do you know the rationale behind serving find Sake cold? I always thought fine spirits were to be enjoyed at room temp as it is easier to taste the botanicals and components used during the distilling process.
There's a Japanese guy who comes into the local bar near my apt - he speaks very little english, but uses that time to practice his english, and drink no less then a half bottle of oban (the ones with less peat are lowland right?)

The Japanese are complex people. They like Scotch (which is the elixir of the Gods) and they like sake (which is warm medicine to de-worm dogs).
Perhaps they just drink sake for cultural reasons and marvel at westerners who say they actually like it.

Dave, you may well be right about sake. Whenever I share a meal with Japanese colleagues or businesspeople, they order Scotch, which suits me fine. I have not been introduced to the rarefied world of excellent sake. I have only had the warm, awful stuff.
I also love beer, but seldom drink it because it makes my belt shrink.
Posted by: sam at June 25, 2009 11:53 AM
DH - I too LOVE OLIVE GARDEN and order a Peach Belini when I am there - frozen as well! - haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Posted by: gemini10 at June 25, 2009 11:56 AM
I'm a huge fan of Reislings (favorite! so many varieties!), Pinot Grigios (I know wine snobs hate this), and Chardonnay's for whites. Not a fan of Sauvignon blancs.
Red's I'm a lot more particular about. I like certain grapes grown in certain areas but not when grown inother areas etc.
Red's are hit and miss with me. I usually like to order a mixed case of reds try them all and then go back and order cases of the ones I like. The others I'll use for cooking.
I'm also one of those people who don't think you need to spend more than $25 for a good wine. Most of the time I shop in the under $15 category for my everyday wines.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 25, 2009 11:58 AM
What,
I know you are not happy with the position I've taken on this question but I am going to try to wade in and have a discussion with you on this and we will see where it goes. We may disagree on this episode but I take actual racism quite seriously, although you probably do not believe me. So here goes:
1. You are right to be upset with Park Dope's post. A bunch of us are, and we wrote so. Nothing more needed to be said.
2. Given your disagreement with DIBS, and given you both have combative styles, there is no doubt he goaded you a bit this morning. Your view is that he used the word improperly the other day and his point is that he did not and the only reason we get posts like Park Dope's is that you blew up over DIBS's use of the word.
3. A bunch of us were not silent yesterday, we disagreed with your view of DIBS' use of the word. Perhaps the tone of debate was more geared toward point-scoring than actual engagement.
4. Which brings us abck to yesterday's discussion. As I read DIBS's original post that angered you, he was saying that the N word, like the F word, are hurtful to the groups they target and should not be used. Is it your view that even that use of the N word is improper if used by a white person? Or is it your view that DIBS's post meant something else (and if so, what did it mean and how do you reach your conclusion)? Because I think you have to answer yes to one of these two questions to justify your attack yesterday on DIBS. I know you are quite angry now, but I hope you can reflect on this, and I will leave it to you to decide whether to try to respond to my post.
As for all the regular denizens of Greater Asshat, if we have a discussion, let's keep it civil and not snarky (I mean the adjective, not the poster). Everyone please treat it seriously and try not to escalate this, or just get back to beer, wine etc.

I am not a wine snob simply because I don't drink wine made in Australia or New York State. I do like German Rieslings, to cook with.
I love a good chilled Pinot Grigio in summer, and the rose wines from Provence. None of these are snob wines and yet they are good wines. Good enough for me anyway.
Now I want to go out for a nice lunch but alas I think it will be a sandwih and diet Snapple for me today.

winthropst, I think it's the whole culture thing. Many never come out to their families. I had this convo with Dave at the last gathering. I am pretty sure my best friend is gay. He never admitted it while living in NYC (very traditional family) but when he moved to LA, he totally changed his look and is only friends with gay guys (very good friends). He never talks to me about it but his roommate, who is friends with me, told me that he doesn't have a single straight guy friend and he doesn't really come home at nights and he only has guy "friends" sleep over. I don't care either way, He is awesome and whatever makes him happy, I am all for it.
Yeah the Will Smith look alike is 6'5. He literally looks like him. same skin tone, same height, same body, same type of stick-out ears. He is 34-36. I know he is on one of the dating sites (I think the AOL one). I can ask the site and his logon name if you want me to? Like I mentioned, he is picky those. Slopefarm (Breathe What, Breathe)...
I know your trying to have a civil discussion to this topic, OK I understand.
You have a different perspective because we are different people (Race, etc..). I don't expect anyone here to see my view on DIBS use of the "N Word" I have given up on that!
The What is upset because there was many more illustrations of Dave's point without using the "N Word" and please please Dave is smarter than that! I can't believe that was a knee jerk reaction because the it was Randi Vs. Ron and Dave have no business getting involved! I could see in the beginning Dave and Randi was engage in a heated discussion but Dave jumped in. Kensington used this phase "N word" and you see I had to problem with that whatsoever!!!!
I thing that upsets me is Dave gets a free pass to exploit Covert Race/Class Warfare! Imagine if "The What" said something along those lines????!!!! The post would be screaming for Brownstoner to BAN ME!!! I learn one this these last couple of years about the Covert use of "Hypocrisy" as a weapon! Sometimes things happen for the better like the first post here and I wonder why Brownstoner has not removed it, maybe he wants to generate page hits or hates black people himself!
I go by what people do, not what comes from their pieholes! Slopefarm thank you for trying to have a dialogue with me and you don't have to agree me with me but just try to understand where I'm coming from...

What, One step at a time because you have this lack of ability to respond.
First.
I was invited into the discussion by the use of the word "faggot" on randi's part, the same way you feel compelled to react to the use of the "n word."
Let's start with that first.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 12:34 PM
(1) Satire = trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly. goldie and Expert Textpert got it.
(2) Daveinbedstuy said NOTHING wrong and is not racist; the only one at fault is randolph for starting this by using the "f" word
(3) What is starving for attention and will twist around anything he can to antagonize. As the biggest racist and homophobe on Brownstoner he wants us to believe an innocent and illustrative example was meant to be offensive and then we are to believe it is somehow all about gentrification. What does not care about what Daveinbedstuy thinks. What needs to be noticed and responded to and doesn’t care what it takes to accomplish this. Unfortunately he got exactly what he wanted yesterday. He should be ignored.

"If someone does cocaine does it show up in their "bodily fluids?" So if somehow I happen to acquire some of said fluids will it show up in me???"
Cocaine passes through your system in 2-3 days if you did it directly. Probably less if you got it in a secondary fashion as you stated.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 12:35 PM
It's mostly the sharp hook nose that gets me, DeLepp. :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 12:35 PM

DIBS--I have an answer for you!
Years ago, I hired this pretty senior guy with an impressive resume for a sales/mkting job. Our company had a drug testing policy--you HAD to be tested before you could start work, no exceptions. He claimed he was dealing with sick parents on the west coast and ended up not getting tested until the morning of his first day of work. He tested positive for cocaine.
His excuse--he didn't use coke, but he was intimate with a lady friend who did!!! The testing agency said this was total crap--not possible. He did not start the job.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 25, 2009 12:40 PM
Wow - if someone actually tests positive for anything else other than marijuana in a drug test they have a serious problem.
Every other drug is non-detectable after at most a week (in urine) - if you can't stop doing coke for 7 days when you know a drug test is coming thats not good.
Marijuana is fat soluable, so it sticks around for 3 weeks - a month (depending on usage)

FYI- Jon does not constantly read every thread. But if someone emailed him and said Jon look at this- he does and he has taken down offensive posts in the past when told about them. this I do know from experience. So instead of assuming Jon left it there because he doesn't like Black people or he thinks it will generate page hits, why don't you just email him?
Posted by: bxgrl at June 25, 2009 12:49 PM

DIBS - that's why I called for an IQ minimum yesterday. Reading comprehension is an alterntive screening tool that would work too.
Posted by: dittoburg at June 25, 2009 12:56 PM
What,
I appreciate your response. Here is how I see it:
I still do not understand how you reach the conclusion that there was something wrong with DIBS jumping in or using the word. Randi used the F word, so he felt compelled to jump in, just as you felt compelled to jump in with the N word. Both are quite hurtful, which was his point. It did not appear to me that he was calling anyone that word or referring to anyone by that word, or even that he sees people that way. Do you think DIBS was calling randi by that word? (What does randi think?) If so, how do you get there from what he wrote? If not, what was wrong with his use of the word? I am curious to understand. I may disagree but my point is not to score points at your expense, but to understand.
Everyone else, take it easy and engage respectfully in calm tones if you want to jump in. Let's treat this like a discussion, not an argument.
Posted by: slopefarm at June 25, 2009 12:57 PM
DH, by the way, a lot of these improv groups are "girls that make bad decisions" (from what I here). I am going with a girl from my building who should know a whole bunch of people there and plays a great wingman. Her BF is actually one of the improv guys but not sure if he'll be there performing or watching.

I disagree with his theories on gentrification and the "Asshat movement." In fact, THAT is his covert racist agenda.
But when he becomes schizophrenic and can't understand a fairly logically setout discussion then he becomes unlikable. When he dismisses any rational alternative to his oftentimes ridiculous viewpoints then too he is not worthy of engaging.

Bernanke Defends His Record on Bank of America Talks (Update1)
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aC7qjZqeA39c
une 25 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank acted with the “highest integrity” in talks on Bank of America Corp.’s takeover of Merrill Lynch & Co., defending his record against some lawmakers who have alleged officials’ actions were inappropriate.
Failure to disclose that Merrill Lynch was a walking Zombie! The Shareholders got hosed on that one!
"Legislators are trying to determine whether Bernanke overstepped his authority in pressuring Bank of America to complete the purchase of Merrill. Bernanke’s record on the issue and lawmakers’ reactions may also figure in whether he will be reappointed by President Barack Obama, and in debates on overhauling the Fed’s powers and responsibility."
Bernanke better update his resume or start applying for unemployment benefits.

cobble- we're friends and I love you. YOu know that but why are you fixating on randi and giving What a pass? I have my own battles with him so I know his reaction when I engage him. He goes way over the line but I expect that.. What I find unforgiveable is what he has said to Montrose on many an occasion, without reason. The names he's called her- what about that? He says a lot of really foul things. He's made anti-semitic references. He's threatened people- including and especially Jon. He accuses people. So I really don't get this. I'm happy you have a relationship with him but still and all.

On to your regularly scheduled topic, how long are you going to keep posting that we have 5 months until disaster. Should be 4 months soon, no?
Posted by: slopefarm at June 25, 2009 1:52 PM
Ok bxgrl, let's talk about this. I'm not sure "fixating" on randi is the right term, but ok, I'll roll with it for the sake of this convo.
I don't like randi. I think he/she has tried to insinuate themselves here, in a really messed up way. Opening with insulting people, and continuing to the point of using the F bomb which to me is as bad as any other intensely derogatory hurtful insulting word.
I do like What most of the time. I used to tell him when I didn't like his verbiage. I sort of gave up. Unless he directs it at me, I'm gonna leave it alone. Other people here seem to know how to handle themselves and fight back. He knows I don't like it. You know I don't like it. But I refuse to "throw the baby out with the bath water there".
randi, on the other hand has aimed a good enough amount of her/his crap at me that I have developed an extreme distaste/disdain/dislike for him/her. And I think many here are, in fact, giving randi a pass. Which is pretty EF'd up to me. So I'm making a point of saying what I think.

ok- I did say I find trolls beneath my notice but randi- it's time to back off cobblehiller. In case you did not notice- this is a community and many of us have become aquaintances and friends offline. You can either add something intelligent to the discussion or you can go away. But trying to start trouble because you think it's fun doesn't do much for you.

ROTD is Hiiiilarious! I almost fell of my chair. You guys are really funny. Biff, it officially beat the russian plumpy tuhas ROTD. I think from now on, there will either be awkward people in front of all restuarants pics OR never any at all.

Oh yeah, one more thing - cheap American beer sucks!! Obscure Eastern European beers are SO much superior (and can be found all around brownstone Brooklyn, for example the Key Food on Flatbush and Sterling). Miller Beer/Bud Light/Coors = DCTW (Damn close to water).

EUROTRASH
Actually Pilsner Urquell is a favorite

ENY I heartily disagree...I can never tell what the fuck I'm ordering.
Posted by: infinitejester at June 25, 2009 2:50 PM
Hahah ENY - whilst out on Long Island with my "home friends" who are in grad school and don't have much money.
Olive Garden is perfect - get smashed off a bottle of wine and have soup and breadsticks for 5 bucks. Then go cruising for long island chicks wearing leggins, uggs and carrying fake LV bags at the great long island bars where a pitcher of beer = a pint in brooklyn.

ENY don't be hatin' on the white boy fun.
Posted by: infinitejester at June 25, 2009 2:57 PM
haha awesome jester - applebees actually makes my 2nd favorite cocktail (off menu of course)
2 parts whiskey (best stuff they have, maybe makers mark if you're lucky)
5-7 ounces nestea raspberry iced tea.
give it a try - it tastes like awesome.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 2:59 PM
OK, DH that sounds like fun. Seriously. On that basis, Olive Garden in LI is perfectly acceptable. Just not in NYC proper!
Posted by: East New York at June 25, 2009 2:59 PM
Anyone ever had bacon infused bourbon??? Smoke joint makes their own, along with a whole other bunch of infued whiskeys. Peaches has a lot too.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:01 PM
You don't HAVE to know when it comes to Eastern European beer, infinite. They're all good, man! Besides, cheap American beer is not by any means solely the domain of the white boys. Plenty of brothers drink these brands too! Just goes to show that bad taste cuts across racial lines.
Posted by: East New York at June 25, 2009 3:01 PM
ENY - Have you been to Zum Schneider's in the East Village? Pretty good German Beer bar on Ave C - they have some obscure stuff.
My fav beers by far are belgian ales (duvel, chimay, delirium etc) - all over 8% abv and complex. They are a little heavy for the summer though.

"Anyone ever had bacon infused bourbon??? Smoke joint makes their own, along with a whole other bunch of infued whiskeys. Peaches has a lot too."
Yeah Dave - I had an old fashioned with bacon infused vodka at PDT in the East Village. Doesn't really taste like bacon per se, you get more of the hickory smoked flavor.
Double Down saloon on Ave a and 1st has bacon infused vodka (which is essential a bottle of vodka witih some slim jims stuck in it)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 3:04 PM
We need to have a welcome party for 11217. This is step one to showing up at a FOB (not FOD) party.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:04 PM
"ENY - Have you been to Zum Schneider's in the East Village?"
Not since the 1990s when I had friends who lived on Avenue A. I swore off the East Village after spending WAY too many nights there. I developed a phobia about that part of town and haven't been back since. Maybe it's time to return.

Yeah ENY - I try to stay away from that part of town whenever possible. Anything good is WAY too crowded.

11217, I never thought I would see the day!
Welcome.
Ok, DIBS, do you have a PLUSA initiation package for 11217? (loaded question)
DH, do you mind doing the honours by singing the PLUSA fight song?
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 25, 2009 3:20 PM
11217 will get all stary-eyed if dh sings.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:24 PM
But how would 11217 ever know what a PLUSA is if this is his first time here????? :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:25 PM
Haha Biff - as per the ROTD thread, i think you're a much better lyricist than I!
(was that correct usage of then/than - i can't tell anymore)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 3:25 PM
I have no idea what PLUSA is.
I'm hoping it's not, please leave the USA.

Pathetic Loser Usual Suspect Asshats
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:33 PM
As a brit I can't fathom why you tarts all have to drink your beer cold, but anyway, have you tried non-blended lambics? (non-blended is important). Because they rely on wild yeasts blown in the barn window and falling from the rafters onto the vats they vary immensely in flavor and strength. Its a crapshhot each time you open a bottle.
Posted by: dittoburg at June 25, 2009 3:37 PM
"I have no idea what PLUSA is."
"Pathetic Loser Usual Suspect Asshats"
11217, while it sounds insulting when spelled out, we actually consider it a big honour to be a PLUSA. It sort of means one has finally arrived and is the member of an exclusive club; albeit one that most normal people with more interesting things to do would want no part of.

True dat ditto - a bar near me serves cask ale at room temp - and it's amazing how when *good* beer is warm you can really taste so much more. They have an IPA that tastes JUST like grapefruit. it's insane
Haven't tried non-blended Lambics (i don't think) I guess you mean ones that aren't fruity? (like framboise or cassis being fruity ones)
do you know any brand names?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 3:44 PM
Biff, I don't really like "normal" myself, but I don't think I deserve the honor quite yet. Perhaps I should be a probationary PLUSA for the time being to see if I can live up to it...?
Posted by: 11217 at June 25, 2009 3:46 PM
DIBS, I assume that video is part of 11217's welcoming package that you prepared?
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 25, 2009 3:46 PM
No, the fruity ones don't count. ;-)
I don't know any brand names, I had them in the land of the walloons.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 3:49 PM
Enough with the "fruity" remarks.
Please, can't 11217 have at least one day's grace before you insult him. :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 25, 2009 3:49 PM
Biff, we should quickly copyright "PLUSA" and create a social club. This can be a good business venture. You can do all of our marketing, advertising, PR and planning work. DIBS can be our resident "ghetto fund manager" and have chicken and M4L as his subordinate fund managers (I bet you like that one Dave). Anyone else has anything useful to contribute to our society?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 25, 2009 3:50 PM
It's good fun, dh. It passed our filters.

now THAT is pathetic.
Posted by: randolph at June 25, 2009 3:52 PM
Haha ditto - I didn't think so. Although a good framboise at home is a guilty pleasure i don't usually admit to haha.
I'll have to check out the non-blended ones.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 25, 2009 3:52 PM
Kens, first the What and now you are assuming that I'm the dominat one. Things may not always be as they seem.
I'm happy to be the chicken's or m4l's "b word."

"I loved some of the NYS wines my sister and brother-in-law used to bring home after trips upstate."
Bxgirl, the Finger Lakes region is considered near world class in the production of Rieslings. Not other grapes. Someone else asked what vineyards to visit in the area? Dr. Konstantin Frank is the one to see, but he keeps off the beaten tourist path. He's the one who first started vinification in the region, and makes some of the best wines. BG, sounds like you need to come over and get some wine education, mainly by drinking. lol.
Sam said:
"I think Australian wine is pretty awful, although better than South African wine, which I find undrinkable.
The only places that produce really excellent winea are:
France
Italy
California
Spain
Portugal
German wines are the pits, Chile has good wine but the best of it stays in Chile, New Zealand should stick with growing sheep and NY State wine is right up there with Tunisian wines. "
Sam, your wine knowledge is seriously out of date.
Germany: Best Rieslings in the world. Best Gewurtz, along with Austria.
NYS: See above, otherwise agree.
South Africa and NZ are producing some of the finest Sav Blancs in the world today, and certainly the best bargains. SA is making some very interesting reds as well, especially pinotage. I had a most excellent bottle of the same recently, made by a Black-owned estate. WHAT, we'll drink together, I'll bring this, you bring the skittles.
http://capewine.com/fairvalley_start.htm
Australia makes a huge amount of high RS mass market wine, but they also make some good stuff. Don't write them off.
Ironically, Portugal doesn't yet produce much of interest, altho they are improving. Port was developed because Portuguese red wine was so bad it had to be used for something.
Bottom line is, with the internet, technology transfer, and wine schools all over, it is increasingly difficult to find truly bad wine, and the old rules about France, Cali, and Italy no longer apply.

randolph, what is really pathetic is claiming to be a black lesbian and then calling one person a faggot and another person gay (in a derogatory way) on two consecutive days. How can you support the Marriage Equality Act and still say things like that?
"Can you tell us about any more of your at home guilty pleasures? Inquiring minds want to know... "
