Just wanted to thank Biff for setting up what was imo the best Brownstoner meeting to date. Plenty of space, plenty of bartenders, plenty of Asshats. A great time. Thanks Biff!

Posted by: denton at June 18, 2009 9:17 AM

Yes thanks Biff for everything. I had a really good evening.

Posted by: Amzi Hill at June 18, 2009 9:20 AM

Wonderful evening, how great that we had the garden! Excellent to see some new faces, and many of the PLUSAs. Biff, thanks for finding Rope — just perfect!

CG-ups, didn't see you as we were leaving, hope you got home ok.

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 18, 2009 9:24 AM

Good times - nice talking to you folks. You're just as interesting in real life as you are in text format!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 18, 2009 9:25 AM

where is report on everyone's behavior. A little gossip even if not true would be appreciated.

Posted by: Petebklyn at June 18, 2009 9:25 AM

It was a great time, again! As always, great to catch up with familiar people and meet new ones. My only regret at these events is that I never seem to have enough time to talk with as many people as I would like for as long as I would like.
And as Denton and Amzi said - really appreciate Biff's efforts in setting it up.

Posted by: etson at June 18, 2009 9:26 AM

The worst behavior was all the 'Stoners that smoke! Wassup with that? Is home ownership that stressful?

Posted by: denton at June 18, 2009 9:30 AM

"Is home ownership that stressful? "

I wouldn't know :(

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 18, 2009 9:33 AM

And did Mr. B show up? Didn't see him when we left at 10PM. Biff does it his his own hood, and he bails?

Posted by: denton at June 18, 2009 9:33 AM

Mr B was there for a while.

Posted by: etson at June 18, 2009 9:35 AM

Mr B was there for a little bit. He got cornered by Arkady and Snappy for a good majority of the time ;)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 18, 2009 9:36 AM

My pleasure, everyone. I thought it went really well and was very happy with Rope...the pre-event pub crawl to find a suitable venue seemed to pay off. I want to thank Rope's Manager, Frank, and the two incredibly friendly and efficient bartenders (one was Paul and unfortunately I didn't catch the name of the woman...they were both terrific). Other than the fact it was a slight hike from public transportation, I thought it was an ideal bar.

Thanks to all who attended, especially the first-timers such as Arkady, christopher and Heather, the injured but very game Snappy and CG ups, and Nokilissa, whom we were thrilled to see re-emerge. Also many thanks to sixyears and jessibaby for the ride home.

I counted 31 attendees, which is what I predicted. Let me know if I'm missing anyone; for some reason my mind is a bit fuzzier than usual today:

Daveinbedstuy, Nokilissa, Arkady, Dirty Hipster, cmu, Denton & Mrs. Denton, wasder, Cobblehiller & Better Half, infinitejester, Biff, Arkady, CG Ups & Friend, Amzi Hill, Montrose Morris, Mr. B, Bxgrl, Heather & (Adorable) Child & Other Half, Rob, InsertSnappyNameHere, sixyearsandcounting, Jessibaby, christopher, etson, More4less, Mopar, DeLepp.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 9:36 AM

I couldn't stand those "old" people. Sell the house for cheap and move to Arizona already. Dont we also have an age cutoff at the other end (ie noone under 30 allowed)? Why weren't there some verbal and/or hand-hand combat? Couldn't stand see everyone being friendly, laughing,..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 9:36 AM

ok, sorry I missed him then.

Posted by: denton at June 18, 2009 9:36 AM

Pete, You asked for it...

Snappy, bxgrl and I did a strip tease on the bar, everyone threw money! What came, in a suit and tie, turns out to have quite the charming party persona and regaled us all with tales of his recent adventures in Antartica. etson and M4L got into a fist fight and had to be separated for a time, but no blood was shed. Noki and MM turn out to be 4th cousins twice removed! Denton played the saxaphone, and Mrs. Denton turns out to be a drop dead double for Ella Fitzgerald! Jessi and six apparently have run off to Las Vegas for a quicky wedding, we threw rice!

[Note: None of this is even remotely true, but it entertained me to write it! ; )]

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 18, 2009 9:37 AM

Oh, and of course a huge thank you to Mr. B. Without him, none of this would happen. Some real friendships have been formed outside of this online world because of him.

DH, they used on fishing lines. when you see it giggle around, a fish is on the hook, yank it up

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 9:43 AM

I had a great time & am very glad I managed to get my geriatric bones over there. All kinds of erroneous presuppositions about "names" were shattered AND somehow Biff even managed to keep the rain off for the first time in recent memory! Thanks, Biff!

Posted by: Arkady at June 18, 2009 9:45 AM

given I haven't been ding'd for my earlier post, guess Arkady is still in bed recovering.

haha m4l re: fishing lines and age cut off on the bottom end

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 18, 2009 9:48 AM

"All kinds of erroneous presuppositions about "names" were shattered" although I was bored to tears by the maundering thoughts of some callow youths whom I'd thought might be interesting people...

Thanks Biff for putting together a fun evening. Now can you work your magic on this weather.

Question of the day is....DIBS is M4L everything that you expected him to be?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 18, 2009 9:56 AM

"Biff (or should I call you Ben Cohen), you were *hilarious* in the cab!"

JB, you can call me Ben Cohen, Ben Dover, Ben Gay or whatever you want as long as you and your blogmantic partner continue to make sure I get me home safely.

I forgot to add DeLepp's guest to the list of attendees.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 9:57 AM

sorry I missed the strip tease and fistfight. How much money did they throw.. And was it to take off more or put back on?

Posted by: Petebklyn at June 18, 2009 9:57 AM

chicken I missed it too. No worries, we'll have a mini one in our hood when you're back (Biff will be the master organizer, of course).

I had a great time, and finally got to talk to some people I've met before, but have never really chatted with, specifically infinite jester, dirty hipster and DeLepp. Next time, mopar and Snappy, 6 and jessi, we're sitting down together for a longer conversation. Mr and Mrs Denton, too. I enjoyed meeting new faces like Arkady, but missed christopher and heather. Everyone else, I thoroughly enjoyed our time together and look forward to next time. Good to see Mr. B, and to our cruise director, Biff, it was a great location. So good to not have to scream to speak to anyone. The vocal chords thank you.

Yes, chicken it is. But alas, the US will lag the rest of the world in new nuclear reactors. Of all the reactors to be builkt globally between now and 2020, China India and Russia will build 52% of them and the US will build 5%.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 18, 2009 11:32 AM

We slow on solar & wind deploymt too

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 11:35 AM

Have to chime in- I had such a great time and everyone was so much fun. Rob and I talked a lot and he did get home ok.Biff- you're a peach! MM and I protected Amzi from his many admirers (he's reserved for my niece, dammit!) and we walked almost to Atlantic Ave, admiring the gorgeous houses and the company of deLepp and M4L. See guys- I told you he was cute! I enjoyed meeting all the usernames :-). Biff (and I realize we all recovering from hangovers this morning) when's the next one?

Posted by: bxgrl at June 18, 2009 11:36 AM

Yes, only one new nuclear project in the US that timeframe -NRG's South Texas 2 project. Still in the approval process(and NRG is the subject of an unsolicited takeover bid from Excelon).
They have a design partnership with Toshiba, which they are hoping to leverage into designing reactors elsewhere.

Posted by: etson at June 18, 2009 11:37 AM

Don't worry - the US will have to come around. It's inevitable.
In the meantime, buy Areva (CEI FP) - biggest builder of nuclear power stations in the world.

Solar, in the form of photovoltaics, is not ecconomically feasible at current prices. It has to be subsidised by the government which, by definition, will continue to make it inefficient.

In reality, coal is still the most efficient here in the U.S.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 18, 2009 11:40 AM

Hey What;

I'm taking a long vacation from Brownstoner, both posting and lurking (of course, there's no way to prove the latter point, but take my word on it).

Before I do,I have something to say to you: you are right about Mr. B. I find it interesting that the three men in this on-line community who were born in Brooklyn (you, me and East NY'er) see this guy for what he is.

I want to tell you something: I was born in a cold-water flat right on the edge of the Red Hook waterfront. My parents were both destitute, as they were both products of broken immigrant homes. After that shack burned down, we were placed in the Red hook Projects. My father never gave in to the temptations of the Red Hook waterfront: the loan sharking, the racketeering, etc. He made an honest living to pull us up, and I never forget it. I know what it means to have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. When I was 10, I was helping my father on some contracting work he was doing on the side, and he suddenly told me: "You are a smart boy, but I have no money for school. You have to earn your way", which is exactly what I did: scholarships to high school, college and then grad school (and I am proud to say, not just any grad school, but Standford Engineering.

I tell you this because I have utmost respect for ANYONE who tries to accomplish something in this life, and furthermore, I realize that even the greatest baseball players (to use an example) only bat an average of 0.330, meaning that 2 out of 3 times they don't make it to first base.

As you can well sense, here we have a guy who is either a trust-fund brat or made his money easily in some bubble. As such, as only such a person can do, he can easily mock and dismiss the works of others. Architects? Pieces of shit. Developers? Greedy. People who live in Fedder homes? "Ignorant" (to use his exact words). Pastors who have to struggle with a 60-person congregation and must make a hard decision what to do about a decripit old building? Why, he can breezily state from his keyboard that he is a philistine, and his acolytes pile on by calling the guy "venal" and "greedy". A guy on Ocean Ave who tried to legally sell his home to a developer? Why Mr. B. laughs at his loss in value when the home is landmarked, and invites everyone else to do so (remember that one What)?
A developer who goes belly-up? Mr. B also invites derision.

It irks me to no end to see a brat like this guy put down the efforts of others without a moment's thought. Disgusting. I'll tell you this. If a guy like Mr. B. tried some of these stunts in the old days of Brooklyn, he would have received some "attitude adjustments" in a bar.

So,in conclusion, What, I'll once again say that you were right, and you've got his number. As you said, we've had our differences, but I give you mucho credit on that one.

Good-bye to all. I need a vacation from the negativity of this site. It speaks VOLUMES about the state of this site that the OT gets the most hits. Most of you can ignore the negativity that permeates the editorial side of this site, but I can't, at least right now. I need a summer vacation, and maybe I'll be back then. I'll miss the OT and bantering about with you. The OT and the get-togethers are great: people of different backgrounds forming a community.

"Biff (and I realize we all recovering from hangovers this morning) when's the next one?"

I don't know. What's everybody up to tonight?
(that's a joke)

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 11:42 AM

Yes, wind also is unreliable and needs subsidies. The TX power grid nearly crashed one day last year because the wind was not blowing enough! Various US states have set unrealistic targets for the % of generation that they want to come from renewables.
But as investments you have to look at 1) whether governments are changing subsidy levels and 2) cost of conventional energy sources (higher cost oil / nat gas is positive for alternative fuels because it closes the cost gap somewhat).

Nuclear is the most efficient marginal cost, coal is most efficient full cycle (including the cost of building the plant). But very few players are building coal plants now because future carbon emissions regulation is so uncertain.

"I'm taking a long vacation from Brownstoner, both posting and lurking (of course, there's no way to prove the latter point, but take my word on it)."

Not a bad idea Benson! I think I need a rest too.

"Before I do,I have something to say to you: you are right about Mr. B. I find it interesting that the three men in this on-line community who were born in Brooklyn (you, me and East NY'er) see this guy for what he is"

That's funny Benson because we have a different perspective of New York City from the ideas and dreams of the transplants. We know the real "New York" and I'm afraid it will come back.

"As you can well sense, here we have a guy who is either a trust-fund brat or made his money easily in some bubble. "

Benson these people had it easy. I was Born and raised in Bed Stuy and grew up in a Brownstone and took the Hard Knock of growing up in the "Hood". Before the Mutant Asset Bubble Brownstones was just a house, a place where you lived and raised your family. I think the Hyper day of the MAB has made monsters of all of us and people have no sense of hard work, just bubble mentality. Jon exploits that Bullshit for his own gain!

"As such, as only such a person can do, he can easily mock and dismiss the works of others. Architects? Pieces of shit. Developers? Greedy. People who live in Fedder homes? "Ignorant" (to use his exact words). Pastors who have to struggle with a 60-person congregation and must make a hard decision what to do about a decripit old building? "It irks me to no end to see a brat like this guy put down the efforts of others without a moment's thought. Disgusting. I'll tell you this. If a guy like Mr. B. tried some of these stunts in the old days of Brooklyn, he would have received some "attitude adjustments" in a bar."

Holy moly Benson, I think we discussed this here before. It's a BLOG (I wish I could put that in like size 70 font). This is not CNN when you have to be neutral on the subjects and report the news (Even they don't do a good job at it). If you don't like it and think Brooklyn real estate and community is more than what Mr. B posts, start your own. It costs 20 bucks a month and there are plenty of sites to start that are user friendly (wordpress comes to mind). If you can do a better job, we'll all read it.

I might not agree with everything on here but I dig the site as well as some of the people I met, albeit briefly. There is tons of information here and I learned a lot of new things from both lurking and posting for the past half a year or so.

Rant over.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 18, 2009 12:04 PM

I also hope you don't disappear benson but I'll be honest with you. The idea of Mr. B as some evil puppetmaster pulling our strings is a little much. Any positive or nagative things on brownstoner are from us because we all read into things and assume thing that we shouldn't. I've been reading and posting on this site since it began- Mr. B tosses stuff out there and we react- or not. and lately everything thing sets you off. I don't know why- lord knows you are one of my favorite people and I love debating with you but only you could take offense at an MM article on antique doors.

And now this final diatribe on Mr. B. Sorry benson, but don't you think it's a little over the top? The guy has a blog. That's it. I'm sorry but you're projecting things onto him that maybe have more to do with you than with Jon.

And that said, again, I hope you stay- everyone asked about you last night and we missed you. One of the reasons I went was to finally meet you. None of us will agree 100% of the time but that shouldn't make us enemies, just stronger friends. Again- please stay. You'll always be my favorite curmudgeon :-)

I am the only one who had a hard time growing up. You were all born with a silver spoons in our mouths. I can't accept that others have a different point of view than mine. I also can't accept the responses to my post so I am going to run away before you say anything. For someone who pretends to be tough, I have a very thin skin.

I like congratulating the one person on this site who consistently curses, threatens others with physical violence and apprears to do nothing with his life on a daily basis.

I don't know any of you personally, but I will comment as if I do.

I am better than all of you and you live in my shadow.

Time to lurk and see what my childish comments do on this site.

Hi, what and benson,

Interesting exchange.

What, you wrote: "Before the Mutant Asset Bubble Brownstones was just a house, a place where you lived and raised your family."

Wasder and I have been saying this all along. For a lot of us, it still is a house to live in and raise a family, pre-bubble, mid-bubble and post-bubble.

What and Benson, aaprt from what you think are the excesses of Mr. B's reporting and rhetoric, is there no room in the debate for a legitimate preservationist viewpoint? What and the preservationists, but not benson, are actually pretty much in agreement on AY, for example. The nature of blogging and commenting tends to lock in the extremes of everyone's views. There is actually more common ground amongst the posters here than you would know from reading the posts.

Benson, have a nice summer, chill out and hope to see you and your Borsalino sometime soon. Maybe if what shows for a gathering in the fall, you will join us too.

I don't get this, benson, to be honest. And I come from a similar background. There's an anti-development bias in NYC, it's all around you. DDDB and so on. It's part of living in a left-leaning city. It also stands to reason that people who buy brownstones don't like new construction. You made your choice, you bought in new construction, that's great. Some people would rather live in old construction and restore it accordingly. That, after all, is how this blog got started.

As to Mr. B's background, seems a bit unfair to speculate unless you know better. In any event, it's unlikely he's making millions off the blog. He pays a mortgage like most of us. And, his anti-development bias, if you were, attracts like-minded people. Altho strangely enuf his biggest advertisers seems to be developers. So they're not bothered.

Like the What, there are many things I miss about the old New York, about growing up in the 70s. Still, change is inevitable. I'm a New Yorker and I will never leave.

Anyway maybe I'll see you around.

Benson, last time I checked, I don't think a single PLUSA that I met was born with a trust fund and a silver spoon in their mouth. I might be wrong but not a single one struck me as such. You have noooooooo idea what's growing up tough is. Trying growing up a jew in communist Russia than get back to me. You wouldn't get into a good college period, even if you were the smartest one in the whole town. Instead ,you would be forced to serve in the army, and be beatin everyday by non-jews until you learn to defend yourself agaist at least 5. Yes, we're talking about modern day, including 90s.

P.S. I think the fedora hat or barsalino or whatever that is is pretentious and makes people look like they are better than someone else anyways. Here is some NYC hate for ya azz.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 18, 2009 12:32 PM

The wonderful thing about blogs Benson is that if you disagree with the person who writes the blog you can call them out, as you and What both do with regularity. But I can understand your desire for a break. I go up and down with this feeling, not because of Mr B's editorial take but because of the trolls and the investment that some folks have in shitting on other people. I find this tiresome and frustrating.

I hope you come back cause you have a unique take on things and are valued for that.

Yeah I just love being:

1. robbed at gunpoint walking to school in 8th grade at 7 in the morning by some cokehead.

2. stabbed/sliced during a fight of 2 against 20.

3. having my jaw dislocated during a robbery of my friends nintendo while walking to my house.

(Disclaimer: All happend to me in Kensington in the 90s.)

I would just love my kids to be exposed to that as opposed to walking on the streets of Brooklyn safely (sarcasm). Oooo, this NYC is soo bad. It's actually safe to get out of the subway at midnight and walk home. Wow, who would actually want that? I want my kids to run home from school and dodge bullets, hey why not, it will only make them tougher if they survive. I'll just have like 5 kids and I figure 4 will survive the tough NYC and I'll only lose one. (more sarcasm).

THAT was funny!

""Benson in the "Good ole days" if pussies like Brownstoner post someone's house and made nasty remarks that person(s) would've rang his bell and beat the fucking shit out of him (You know I'm right)!!!!"

He probably is right about this.

Benson is a great guy, hands down. I agree with him that Mr. Brownstoner at times goes to far. To me, it seems that he (Brownstoner) tends to place everything in the context of historic preservation, and any views that oppose or conflict with the end goal of saving and restoring old buildings are unworthy and subject to ridicule. I try to call him out on it when I believe see it, and then move on, because it's his blog, he can say whatever he feels.

However, while no one appreciates history and historic structures more than me, I'm old enough to know that you can't save everything. Furthermore some things, although old, aren't worth saving. I don't see any of that from Mr. Brownstoner. It's almost like he's a modern-day Ellsworth M. Toohey.

The What remains the single funniest and among the most prescient posters on this blog. I don't always agree with him, but his contributions here are invaluable, although I don't approve of how he tends to sling around the insults. But he does crack me up, and he makes some very good points at times, as I see it.

Benson, take it easy my man and have a good break. Hope to hear from you again soon.

Benson, I will miss you as well, and even though we probably will never agree on much politically, or on other issues of the day, I always respected you, and like you very much in person. It's all just talk and opinion, that's all a blog is, and this one has brought together a disparate community of people who probably never would meet, and from it have come real friends, at least for me. I include you in that group. I hope you come back, and I sincerely wish you and your wife and family the best.

For what it's worth, I don't think too many here were born with silver spoons, and some of us have had similar, or equally challenging life circumstances. All of that shapes who we are now, and in the long run, all of us are only trying to make our lives, and the lives of those we love and respect better. I think that binds us together much more than the petty differences separate us.

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 1:00 PM

I'm with denton and Kens on this- and i agree. Speculating about someone's background is foolish. Brooklyn wasn't the only tough place to grow up in, and plenty of us and our families did the bootstrap thing so this whole "only the Brooklyn-born know NYC" stuff to be ludicrous. (and I <3 THL too!)

"Name one time in New York City history when WHOLE NEIGHBORHOODS was subjugated and large numbers of people had to move out for "Progress", HUH????!!!"

Oh well- you were one up on us in the Bronx. The Bronx got burned down- and not for progress. Homes completely destroyed, people burned to a crisp, neighborhoods decimated- not just "subjugated". Think it was violent in Brooklyn? Oh- and did I neglect to mantion the disease factor that resulted from all the arson? And not the changing demographics but the NO demographics? You would have been considered a wuss in the Bronx. It's only been within the last maybe 10-12 years the Bronx has begun to come back. Compared to that, Brooklyn was practically a cakewalk.

As an Oldie, I think everyone is losing sight of the fact that the world changes in ways both good & bad & the longer you live, the more changes occur. The purpose of this blog it seems to me is to serve as a place for an exchange of ideas &, as we saw last night, even when our basic philosophies may differ, the gumutlich is there. A totally homogeneous group would be boring. I've learned a lot of both practical & theoretical knowledge from many posts. Some of the ad hominem remarks are uncalled for but even they add to the spirit of the dialogue. Some days a neutral stimulus can just lie there while other days the same entry will start a bunch of vitriolic comments. I believe it has more to do w/ our own particular mood on a given day than w/ what specific issue is raised. I hope, Benson, that you find some tranquillity during your vacation & return w/ the general upbeat outlook you're more typically noted for.

K, I managed to survive without those things happening to me, but anecdotes are just those.

I loved being able to play actual sports instead of Nintendo, with real kids on the streets.

I loved being able to get in just about every cultural institution for free.

I loved being able to take the train to Yankee Stadium and actually be able to buy box seats and see the game without paying a fortune to some effin' broker.

I loved being able to go to Times Square and see a double feature for a buck without seeing fukin' Disney all over my town.

I loved being able to ride on the outside of buses and trains.

I loved being able to get what I need from quirky local merchants who lived in my neighborhood.

I loved playing stickball with my homies, and basketball, without some damn parents trying to stick me on a team with a coach and a uniform.

I loved smelling the bread from the Silvercup factory.

I loved smelling all the other factories in NYC and knowing that all the 'poor' parents actually had jobs in them.

I loved when the stuff I bought didn't say 'Made in China'.

I loved when any working shlump like me could live in any neighborhood they wanted.

I could go on, but you get my drift. There was good and bad, but all we ever hear about is the bad. NY was a thriving place then, always was, and always will be. A lot to be said for the good old days, but I've moved on and adapted.

What the Sam Hill is an "arrangement po' room"?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 1:13 PM

and I <3 denton too! I miss those same things and I know when we have to move on. It takes more hard work and gumption to make things better than it does to sit and whine about the past- denton has the right of it.

(Loved meeting your better half last night.) Sorry we didn't have more chance to talk. Hopefully next time.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 18, 2009 1:19 PM

denton, I might have came across wrong. NYC did have a lot of great things about it as well. I have great memories, otherwise I would have jetted first chance I could. I love it as well but I still wouldn't turn back the clock. Like Arkady said, as you grow up, the world changes but NYC overall, in my opinion, changed for the better, not worse.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant..

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing......that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O..K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes..

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

people are sooooo ridiculous and precious about their kids. yes I know times have changed and all that crap - but maybe if we really tried to understand why it's ok to give our 9 year old a CELL PHONE than I think we would be a better society

Posted by: gemini10 at June 18, 2009 1:28 PM

what- Your personal fantasy is of the great Brooklyn savior/rebel- unfortunately that's your delusion.

So your best answer is to claim that MM and I are jon's lapdogs or have "Nut Sack down your throats??" Gosh- that makes you sound just so intelligent and really gets your point across. You also don't get what a blog is- so obvious. YOu had no real answer to what I said so throw some insult out there. I'm always amazed at how many people seem to find that refreshing or find you cute. I simply find it disappointing because on occasion I actually see glimpses of actual thought. Too bad it's always obscured by your obscenities and insults.

And read some history, What- it wasn't speculation that burned down the Bronx. No one was speculating in the Bronx- it was being written off. (And what does my birthday have to so with knowing that? My family lived in the Bronx (and still do) for several generations. I kinda think that makes me a bit more of an expert on it than you.

There is a woman in Washington and she is a foster mother to little infant kittens until hey are old enough to be adopted out.

The thing is she's also a photographer and she takes the most INCREDIBLE photos of these little imps. For real, the pics are fantabulous.

scroll a few posts down and look at little babies getting all puffed up and hissing. It killed me...

Posted by: chebubble at June 18, 2009 2:14 PM

Oh dear g*d, are we back to figuring out just what Rob is AGAIN?!!!

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 18, 2009 2:15 PM

The landlords burned them down for the insurance money- many of the buildings were long ago paid off so landlords felt they had no way to make money on the building, there was no back up financing. They were losing money. they weren't speculating- there was nothing in the Bronx at that time that was attracting people, there was no gentrification movement. Partly, I think, becasue it was mostly apartment buildings. Though most were Pre-War to the 60's, they didn't have the cachet of brownstone neighborhoods and because the neighborhoods were poor, they were red lined.

It had nothing to do with speculation and everything to do with the times. denton is right except to say that most of these buildings had tenants, but they were very poor.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 18, 2009 2:16 PM

" Because they had build these buildings for people with money to live in?"

Most of the South Bronx is pre war. They torched them for insurance money.

Bxgrl/Denton - thanks! -always was so curious as my mom and I used to speed down the Cross Bronx Expressway in her Buick Skylark on our way to visit family in NJ and would marvel at the burned out shells of buildings that stood there vacant for at least the entire 80's!

Posted by: gemini10 at June 18, 2009 2:19 PM

gem- because the taxes were too high for the income, and most of the buildings were in terrible states of disrepair- it was just a horrible cycle of no money-no repair- no high ent- no repair, etc. At some point landlords decided they would make money from their insurance policies and everyone be damned.

Biff Champion - I mean, Ben Cohen - glad you got home and then to the Death Star alive and well.

In other news, we're done grading the US History Regents. The cats that used to be strays do.

The older ones that have long since put their sordid pasts behind them do not.

In fact Cookie will just knock it around and holler and yell until dad comes to kill it for her. Then she does the happy proud of herself twirling dance because she knows she's getting a treat.

For the strays the bug is the treat.

Blech!

Rob - have you ever traveled outside of the US? You might find your monolithic view of "white" people just a tad stupid if you got into a room with a white albanian, greek, south african, icelander, scot, kiwi etc.

We don't have time to adequately take apart Benson's tirade right now, but we find it funny that Benson and his new-found buddy, The What, can't seem to get their stories straight: Benson accuses us of being anti-development and The What accuses us of being a cheerleader for the development boom. Which is it? Sometimes the truth is a little more nuanced than that. And, for the record, we were born and raised in New York and, yes, even got mugged a couple of times in the 70s, so you two can stop pulling your city cred crap. It's getting very old. You don't have to have grown up in the Bed Stuy or the Red Hook Houses to be a New Yorker. Heck, you don't even have to have been born here. You are both blinded by your own burning self righteousness and, ironically given the humble origins you both love to brag about, sense of entitlement.

Posted by: christopher at June 18, 2009 4:01 PM

I'll attempt to answer this one christopher.

PLUSA = Pathetic Looser Usual Suspect Asshats/Assheads.

Pathetic Looser - Contribution of Randi
Usual Suspects - not sure who but comes from Brownstoner thread of usual suspects are the evil kenivel posters that kidnap all the threads and don't let innocent lurkers post their opinions.
Asshats/Asshead - Contribution of the WHAT.

I think Biff gets the official credit of creating "PLUSA" club and is not only the president but also a member? Correct me if I am wrong on this one.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 18, 2009 4:27 PM

Should we have a blog psychologist to evaluate all the blogicides we've had here in the last month or two. I think it's fair to say there's been an epidemic.

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 18, 2009 4:28 PM

"I don't think we should mix the job of party-planner w/ that of membership secretary."

Exactly...the person planning and drinking at the parties should not be responsible for selecting members.

We have to be assured that we have the most upstanding members entering our circle, despite the fact we had a couple of limping members out last night.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 4:29 PM

Looser=Loser. Sorry.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 18, 2009 4:29 PM

I think rob invented "blogicide" or at least introduced us to it.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 18, 2009 4:30 PM

"Usual Suspects"

This came from the thread where Mr. B invited everyone who hates the OT to dis it, and dis us good! They called the OT people, regular posters, "Usual Suspects". It had quite the derogatory and nasty edge to it, so we adopted it for our own.

Do you notice a trend here?

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 18, 2009 4:31 PM

"I think Biff gets the official credit of creating "PLUSA" club and is not only the president but also a member?"

If a member commits blogicide and then comes back, does that mean he or she remembers?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 4:31 PM

I say we nominate Rob to be official PLUSA to dub people into the PLUSA club (and kick them out). That should be fun :o). he might even get some free drinks out of it as bribes.

DIBS, obviously you haven't been keeping up-to-date with our recent changes. We have raised our standards for assessing members. The requirements are much more stringent now. Don't worry, nobody other than you in that group would be mistaken for a dirty hipster. I went for the hipster look, but unfortunately my jeans were not tight enough, my shoes were too new and clean, and I'm about 20 years too old (and I can't stand camping, especially in backyards).

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 18, 2009 5:24 PM

No dave. Times have changed. Muffs are no longer de rigeur for the well dressed woman's winter wardrobe. One should never get a fishing hook caught in ones expensive clothing.

think we need to have diff levels of membership (regular, VIP, gold, Platinum......)

some of the following are legit requirements for premium levels and some are purposely to EXCLUDE (& insult) people so we can make this a SNOB CLUB:

employed - doesn't matter; YES does yield bonus points
Age - doesn't matter; over 30 yields bonus points
Own property - doesn't matter; more ppties, more points
Rich - doesn't matter; more money, more points

Here comes the good stuff:
SINGLE - NO GO; if you cant hook up, you aint good enough to join
have CATS - NO GO; to accommodate our gay membership - no pussy cats
No Car - NO GO; if you rolling on bike, go play with the kiddies in the park
Live outside of NYC - STAY OUT; we don't want you

According to that, who's at platinum, gold, or EXCLUDE?

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 5:43 PM

Uh oh, based on that criteria, I think the PLUSA President just got disqualified.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 18, 2009 5:46 PM

Posted by: more4less at June 18, 2009 5:50 PM

wow- I see a conflict. I do own property - cats. So far that's about the only double requirement I qualify for :-(

Oh wait- live in Brooklyn. No car- but I take public transportation which should appeal to the self-righteous elitist ecology types among us who aren't opting for coHousing.

How about excluding those who WORK in Jersey? If you aren't contributing to the NYC tax database or work for someone who doesnt, NO GO!

Posted by: etson at June 18, 2009 5:57 PM

Primordial Ooze (for the lowest of the low- hipsters perhaps?); rust; tin; fool's gold; less than 925 sterling; 10K gold and solid gold.

The fellow sitting with Rob who just wandered in, the one you think might be the What, told me his name was Cory. He said he'd been "away" in Europe for a long time, had grown up in the neighborhood, and had only lived in it a few months (now).

Rob, you are delightful and we all love you, but it's painful to see someone drink so much (by the time we chatted, you could not finish a sentence).

Thank you, THL, for the Newburgh link, I will check it out.

THL, you coming to the next one? Living in New Jersey and having to commute 16 hours each way is only half a valid excuse.
