The FGVOTD is back (at least for today) and will hopefully set the mood for tonight's Friends of Brownstoner gathering at Rope, Inc. in Clinton Hill (at 415 Myrtle Avenue, between Vanderbilt Ave & Clinton Ave).

We will start around 6pm, but please feel free to drop in whenever you can. We plan on being there for at least a few hours.

Have fun PLUSAs! I will be there in spirit if not body.

I heard denton will be running a shuttle service from all the local subway stops. :)

Hooray - an inflammatory post about Williamsburg.

DH, breath breath.... you don't need a drink & smoke right now. breath breath....

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 9:42 AM

Cool, DH will be needing a drink tonight. I've got just the place!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 9:46 AM

sent a tips email to mr. B too... folks in the south slope might recognize this creepy scammer from 6th Ave & 12th St on the front page of the daily news...

I plan to attend tonight, subject of course to work.

Bklnnite...that story is a riot.

"Hooray - an inflammatory post about Williamsburg."

DH, oh yes, that thread should be white hot!! LOL!

Also loving the sloppy tenant thread, this will be most entertaining.

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 17, 2009 9:53 AM

Funny thing, he looked like the more normal one in the family. His brother looks really creepy. What a psycho.

if i come to rope how will i find everyone? i need to make sure it is rob who i am kicking in the balls not WHAT or dibs.

Posted by: randolph at June 17, 2009 9:54 AM

DH, that guy was a nobody. Who would believe that idiot - especially when he's doing it for attention / coverage? Am sure more would defend it if it was someone legit & more serious in his / her attack

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 9:55 AM

Biff....I got the nametags. You got the marker???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 9:55 AM

"always disappointed my fellow PLUSAs don't stick up for the burg when outsiders make attacks"

DH, I made a crack about the writer. Anyone who has been to Williamsburg knows it is a terrific and quite diverse neighbourhood.

Don't feel bad, I don't think anybody, including myself, ever defends Brooklyn Heights. As long as you like where you live, who cares what other Asshats think?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 9:57 AM

"Biff....I got the nametags. You got the marker???"

Yep, we're all set. What time are you planning on getting there?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 9:58 AM

Randi, I'm sure you can tell quickly who is Rob even if you're blind. issue is how fast can you run - ie when Rob's dog is chasing you down

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 9:58 AM

randolph, there aren't many PLUSAs who wear hot pink Hannah Montana baseball caps. Rob is pretty easy to spot.

haha i know guys - i know if i ever want to start a website to earn some advertising bucks all i have to do is write a crazy story about hipsters, which will in turn get linked to Brownstoner and Gothamist and boomski! instant page hits

Randi, you will need to identify yourself so the PLUSAs can form an orderly line in front of you for their nut-kickings.

p.s. I know raccoon sightings are common near greenwood and south slope...
but I surprised to seew one in above backyards last night - running along telephone/cable lines and I'm not near any park but off Smith st.

DIBS, I'll likely be there around 6:15 too. Should we have told Amzi it starts at 2pm?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 10:14 AM

am gonna try to make it out there tonight too!

Petebklyn, I live in south slope and had a racoon in my backyard walking along the wires in the back of my fence around 7pm, he then proceeded up a tree and hung out there for awhile.

G10, if this sweetens the pot for you, I believe Silex mentioned they were going to try to attend. I'm hoping Mr. B also shows up, as it's in his neighbourhood.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 10:20 AM

Where is Rob? I had a brush with G-List "celebs" yesterday. I saw It and Taylor Made from the I Love New York and I Love Money reality shows being filmed as they were walking across the Brooklyn Bridge last night. I almost ran over Taylor Made as he was obliviously standing in the bike lane right where it is the most narrow (on the Manhattan side, by the subway entrance).

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 10:24 AM

Biff, you should've ran him over and scream "Dont you know who I am?!!!!!!!!!! Get out of my way!!!!!!!!"

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 10:26 AM

Oh, goodie! A bike lane topic!

HOLY CRAPOLLA!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 17, 2009 10:36 AM

"another celeb sighting"

I saw Gabriel Byrne on Joralemon street, and Lily Taylor on Court Street!

Not really such a biggie, as I hear everyone sees them all the time! [Where have I been?]

CG_Ups, wanna split a car service or taxi? I can walk over to you and we can go to the meet up together?

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 17, 2009 10:37 AM

"You all were joking about the shuttle, right? My footy is acting up, am moving to the "maybe" column for tonight."

I think we might need an ambulance, not a shuttle, to get the PLUSAs on the disabled list out tonight!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 10:39 AM

"Dis you watch table tossing Teresa?"

She LOST her EF'g mind! Soo much fun to watch, but pretty shocking too.

"Hope some of you are still holding the bar up."

I have a feeling it'll be the other way around.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 10:54 AM

"Jacqueline turns out to have a backbone and some real credibility/integrity - the only one of the bunch. I was pleasantly surprised by her and her hubby."

I have to admit I was so turned on by his sticking up for both his wife and (surprisingly) Danielle in the face of his sisters.

Now THAT'S a man!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 17, 2009 10:56 AM

THL/CH
OMG!!! - where to start
first off how inapproriate is Danielle on SO many different levels? oy vey! - showing nude pics of herself to her daughters was beyonce bizarre. then the book ordeal at the table. I think Jaqueline never should have sided with danielle. she never should have called dina a liar - you guys are family - you have to stick with them. at least her husband seems nice and sensible - I thought he acted with class. Teresa lost it - hwoever not sure why other than I would be pissed too if this horror show showed up to my party and took over with her attention seeking self to confront the other ladies at my expense..literally. wow! - I can't wait for the reunion. I have insider dirt as my friend's client actually lives in Wayne NJ and knows the Manzo's and admits that Danielle doesn't live in Franklin lakes, but in Wayne where she is now dating the police chief there and EVERYONE in town hates her - hold on lemme email her for the gossip again!

Posted by: gemini10 at June 17, 2009 10:58 AM

Biff - do you have your notes RE: Rope handy? I don't seem to recall their beer selection.

oooooh I lurve Gabriel Byrne. I guess I need to hang out in BH more. I like Lili Taylor too. I guess they live in the neighborhood? I was on the UWS yesterday and saw Hoda Kotb. Yup. A-lister. heh. Like a dork though, I kept staring at her trying to figure out where I knew her from. By the time I realized it was from the TV, I already looked like a wacko. sigh.

THL...How did you resolve the poor dead kitten issue????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 11:22 AM

Adding to Housewives chatter, I was literally encased in a nearly paralyzed pile of horror and delight during the final supper there. I think my jaw was on the couch corner until I felt spittle dribbling out and promptly clamped it shut.

And was it just me, or was anyone else baffled by the fact that several of the women seemed concerned that the children leave the room... not 2 minutes after Teresa had announced how sore she was from being banged silly after her "bubbie" job?

My GOD. And her husband appeared to be grinning and drooling like a man in heat as he tried to calm her a bit following her total meltdown. I wouldn't be surprised if their 4th bundle of joy was conceived that night in the restaurant bathroom. Brrrrr.

Yesterday 11th graders across NY state took the US History and Geography Regents Exam. The grading began today (a truly mind-numbing experience - this morning I read 90 essays on the same topic). For your entertainment I'm posting a composite essay of sentences culled from student essays on the June 2006 Regents. Keep in mind that the vast majority of essays (90% or so) are perfectly acceptable and normal, but then there are kids who crack under pressure of an exam they have to pass to graduate. They also have little time to edit their work (and some don't use the time they have). If you want to see the questions, they're in the June 2006 US History
exam: http://www.nysedregents.org/testing/socstre/regentushg.html (pg. 9 for the thematic essay and 10-18 for the DBQ). With that in mind, enjoy:

I was once on the front page of the New York Times cleaning pumpkins. FDR was a man in a wheelchair who wouldn't expose himself in public. Soldiers were on posters that looked like a real man - who wouldn't want to be a real man? A woman his holding a wrencher seeing his man
go to war. Mass media has made the intangibles in hand's reach. Many had a way to show others that these things are happening it's not a joke. Adults, kids dieing every second because of things like killing them, beating them, locking them up in jail or just killing them in ways they shouldn't be in, etc. In the year 1980 they described a
quick teabag that which you drop in water and stir. In a few years there won't be a slim person known to man.TV helps make decisions. Media today has got so crazy there are over a thousand different channels. We watch the weather to know what to wear, the radio to find out the hottest music, and most of us still don't know how to
make cornbread. Without the media, JFK wouldn't have won, people wouldn't have protested Vietnam, women wouldn't have gone out to work in factories, and Harold and Kumar would never have gone to White Castle.

Turning points in history are called turning points. A turning point is is a major event in any time- kind of like the climax in a good novel, the high point of a good discussion, or hitting the winning home run in a Mets game. Throughout history there has been a lot of events that lead to different and major events. Both good and bad
changes are good. Since I was born, there haven't been many turning points in American history. For the most part, the President choking on a pretzel and the Vice President shooting a man is about it. After the Declaration of Independence people gained the right to vote, especially African-Americans. People had to go to court to make the
Declaration of Independence come true. World War I was caused by the Boston Tea Party. Before the women's movement women stayed home and worshipped their husbands. The flip floppers were women who didn't cover themselves anymore. In 1929 people had no money and started killing themselves, which hurt the economy greatly. We were island
hopping and then the Japanese decided to get tuff so we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Then they surprise attacked Pearl Harbor. Most Americans saw WWII as necessary after a mean trick like Pearl Harbor. The real hit on Japan was a Fat Man and Chubby Boy. Germany, Italy, and Japan lost WWII and their world power rankings. JFK won the 1960 election because Nixon used a product called five o'clock
shadow. The change from 9/11 is that we have a new term called 9/11. Once stated by a wise member of the human race, if left unanalyzed, history is doomed to repeat itself. During the history of the world many incidents have occurred that people wished they could take back but they can't. In conclusion I can justifiably say that
major historical events can be referred to as turning points.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 17, 2009 11:34 AM

sixyears, these 11th graders all need to be sent back to re-learn the English language, and to get their history correct. I couldn't imagine anyone writing stuff like that when I was in 11th grade. This is very sad on so many levels.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 11:44 AM

"THL...How did you resolve the poor dead kitten issue????"

My husband took care of it. I went and talked to the momma while he did it. She knows me pretty well so I figured I could pacify her a little.

This morning she moved the remaining two kittens into my yard. I was hoping she would eventually b/c it'll make them easier to catch. Everyone else has chain link which is easy for her to climb with them in mouth but I have stockade so it's hard for her to bring them over here. The one's I have from a previous litter didn't come until hey were old enough to make the jump themselves.

She knows we took care of her other ones so I guess she feels safer with them here.

She's such a good mum.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 17, 2009 11:45 AM

Noki!
OMG - totally I forgot that all the kids were there during that discussion. I really think her husband is totally wacky - I like Jaqueline's husband and I think Caroline's is probably a riot
interesting that Caroline's family also is friends with ex-police commisioner Bernie Kerik.......

I used to love taking Regents examinations. The US History regents in 02 was a joke after preparing for the AP Exam in US History.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:50 AM

Six years
ok am literally crying at my desk with laughter
wait - are you saying these are sentences you have collected through the years since 2006? If not, where did you find them?

Posted by: gemini10 at June 17, 2009 11:51 AM

DH - such a braggart!
hahaa - AP US history - look at you!
but did you take AP bio as well? or organic chem?

Posted by: gemini10 at June 17, 2009 11:52 AM

DH, I didn't have notes on the beer selection, but here are a few reviews I found:

"Rope offers a fine selection of booze, tap beer and bottles for inhabitants of the still-affordable Clinton Hill neighborhood, and enough cheap Pabst and well-worn couches to accommodate Pratt students who wander over from campus."

"Decent selection of beers, but huge pours on whiskey!"

"OK beer selection. But it's cheap. And the bartenders are really, truly kind."

"It has a decent beer selection, wallet-friendly prices and a pretty good jukebox."

MMMMmmmmmmmmm, PBR....

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 11:53 AM

"hahaa - AP US history - look at you!
but did you take AP bio as well? or organic chem?"

no gem - science wasn't my strong point. i can say with pride i scored a 90% on every regents exam (except the 67 on physics, that i don't count)

i was TERRIBLE at science - i had to study very hard just to get the grades my parents found acceptable.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:57 AM

sixyears- omig-d! Hilarious and horribly sad. Some of them actually once you get past the actual language, have some very interesting to say.
"Without the media, JFK wouldn't have won, people wouldn't have protested Vietnam, women wouldn't have gone out to work in factories, and Harold and Kumar would never have gone to White Castle."

That is a brilliant summation of the decline and fall of the Western Empire :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 11:58 AM

gotcha biff - i might have to stick to whiskey then.

if PBR is more then 2 dollars then we might have a problem

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:59 AM

Question: Why do hipsters buy those ridiculously small 8 oz. (?) bottles of beer?????

I should post this in the Williamsburg thread as well.

I see these Philly hipsters (you think the Williamsburg ones are lame, hahahaha) drink these at Dirty Franks.

i can only assume that the bar sells them because they make more money by ripping off these hipsters.

And that, as Martha Stewart says, Is A Good Thing.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 11:59 AM

"All beers and well drinks are $3 during daily happy hour, from 5:30pm to 7:30."

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 12:00 PM

DH - ok gotcha - I kid with you b/c I was one of the kids who never would have been in an AP class and the only regents I took were SS and English - however like you I did get a 90 on my SS regents! Math/Science - let's not go there

I'm not familiar with this Dave. Maybe they are free promotional bottles the bar gets from distributors that they inturn sell very cheaply to the said hipsters?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 12:04 PM

DH, I think PBRs are $1 on Monday. Just as well it isn't Monday or we would be crowded out by Pratt students, although I assume school is over now.

Seems like there shouldn't be any rain tonight despite all the recent showers and ones expected in the next few days.

cmu, a number of people are coming around 8 or just afterwards. Hope to see you again.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 12:05 PM

"wait - are you saying these are sentences you have collected through the years since 2006? If not, where did you find them?"

G10, they were all from a single exam, the June '06 US History Regents. Of course, we have 800 kids taking the test, with two essays per test, so these are chosen from approximately 1600 essays. Thankfully most kids are smarter than the ones who wrote these sentences.

DH, you graduated in '01? I theoretically could have been your teacher. It was my first year on the job. I'm sad to say the Regents are much easier now than eight years ago - a quick survey of the assigned essays over the years will show anyone what I mean.

Ok, back to the grading. See you all at Rope tonight!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 17, 2009 12:28 PM

Any PLUSAs know which stop on the C train is closer to Rope, Lafayette or Clinton-Washington?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 12:36 PM

DH - you graduated HS in 2001?
-I graduated HS in 1993

Six - ah ok! - wow and whoa!

Posted by: gemini10 at June 17, 2009 12:49 PM

Clinton-Washington is easiest.

Posted by: DeLepp at June 17, 2009 12:50 PM

Thanks DeLepp. I knew you would have the answer.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 12:54 PM

Biff, if you're lazy, switch to G at Hoyt - 3 (2 long ones) blks closer than C @ washington

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 12:55 PM

i actually graduated in 02 :-\

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 12:55 PM

DH, you realize you'll be hanging out with a bunch of "OLDER" people later?

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 12:57 PM

Biff, C or G, go to the last cart - that'll put you at the closest exit out of the subway

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 12:59 PM

By the way, and I will mention this to people tonight, tell the bartender Paul that you're with Brownstoner and you'll get a discount on your drink...likely a nominal discount of $1, but it's still a nice gesture.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 12:59 PM

If you get off at Clinton-Washington on Fulton you'll understand why that street needs a BID and get to see some mansions in major renovations along Clinton. If you take the G you'll understand what the G train trot means.

Posted by: DeLepp at June 17, 2009 1:01 PM

Actually, $1 is like 33% of a PBR, so it's not a bad discount.

Great, thanks M4L re: the train tip. I'll be sticking with the C and walk to Rope rather than risk a time-consuming transfer to the G.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 1:01 PM

Posted by: more4less at June 17, 2009 1:24 PM

Rob - That's only about 4 blocks more than I have to go - easiest way I found was to walk.

Posted by: Arkady at June 17, 2009 1:24 PM

Rob - unfortunately the closest stop on the R is the Dekalb stop, from there it's about a 15 minute walk (that's what I'll be doing)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 1:25 PM

Can I come into defense of these students...I graduated the same school that sixyears teaches in and when I did (before he started working there) it was full of immigrant students. I was only in America for 3 years when I started high school so cut these people some slack. I took the regents and even though I don't remember what I wrote, it is a good possibility that it would be along those lines. I was always getting perfect scores in math though, including AP exams and regents.

http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/100784/-em-manhattan--em---small-businesses-in-harlem-take-a-big-hit/Default.aspx

To many, talk of the recession might just mean a bunch of numbers, percentages or falling stock prices, but in the neighborhoods of New York City, its effects are very real. NY1's Rebecca Spitz filed the following report on how the recession is hitting home in Harlem.

Hey kens, i agree with you about making fun of students who are not native born English speakers, as I'm sure their English is much better then my (insert other language here)

I didn't really get the impression that's what were were making fun of when reading sixyear's essay examples. they just sounded like the essays of kids who didn't know the material, and were trying to creatively fill up the page.

sure, immigrant students may have trouble with sentence structure or proper grammar (as rules in English apparently don't make much sense) - but you can tell if they know the material. I didn't get that impression from sixyear's essays

Sixyears - how are US History essays evaluated? is it purely content or is spelling, grammar et all taken into account as well?

Bxgrl - do you mean Miss Muffet or Montrose Morris?

g10, montrose

benson's debates w/ Muffet are usually pretty mild in comparison

Hi CG_ups, sorry for the delay in responding, had to go out for a bit. Can you email me at cobblehiller1 at gmail dot com, and we can discuss. Thinking about leaving 5:45 or so — flexible.

GB lives in the Heights, but has been spotted at Cobble Hill Park by my BH, I believe, and LT lives here in CH - pretty sure.

DH, no specific thread; in gen'l, benson debates with bxgrl and Montrose often - one of the few match-ups where the reading is good

Gem, yes, BH and I will be there! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 17, 2009 1:57 PM

gotcha m4l - yeah benson rules. i always like reading the arguements between him and montrose. neither is wrong, they just have fundamentally different ways of looking at things - although i can't really recall things ever getting too nasty between them - alas i was probably sidetracked on some stupid bike lane thread.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 2:01 PM

benson is a really good guy- he's fun to debate with for the most part but lately he's been really down on montrose. But I hope he shows tonight. I really want to meet him (benson I hope you're reading this).

DH, The Benson / MM debate was on the Church thread yesterday (and early today!). I like both of them a lot, but don't get the feeling that Benson is going anywhere.

One the subject of high schools, thought this was a pretty amusing article (although it may be just me because we didn't have high scool graduation):

Well, it won't be great for J, Dina and Caroline will abuse her mercilessly for this, but BRAVO to J's husband, yes, THL, what a MAN!! Yes, T was clearly upset that HER party was wrecked by something that never should have happened and Danielle's comment just set her off, understandably, but WHOA! What a reaction! I want to see the clapboard that gemini posted yesterday at Adelphi & Lafayette so i will get off at Lafayette.

M4L, be prepared to stay late. Amzi has many positive qualities, but punctuality isn't one of them!

DH, I've been meaning to read that book forever (along with Invisible Man). Let me know how it is.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 2:09 PM

DH- I think you mean the preservationist/tear 'em down debate brings out the worst. Montrose stays eminently reasonable (never one of my strong points)- but benson seems determined to find something wrong with everything she says. The odd thing is that they actually agree on many things in general.

What do you think of the G-d Delusion? I haven't read it yey

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 2:11 PM

DH, Richard Dawkins tutored a couple of people I knew at college. They thought he was great, although he was not that well liked generally. One of the folks I knew subsequently came out though, which would not seem to fit in that well with all the Selfish Gene stuff.

If you want to read the other side of the story at some point try 'There is a God' by Antony Flew or 'The Reason for God' by Tim Keller.

Posted by: etson at June 17, 2009 2:19 PM

Ah - gotcha bxgrl. well regardless i hope benson doesn't leave us. love his stories about brooklyn past and friday's trivia!

I had a little trouble getting into The God Delusion at first but right now it's a pretty quick read. Can't say I agree with everything, but it's interesting to read the other side of things after being subjected to catholic school for several years.

I think it was m4l posting for Nokilissa.....nice place but too much work.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 2:30 PM

Why did benson threaten to leave this time????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 2:32 PM

DH- I tend not to read books that start out with a set idea or agenda because most of them tend to be flat or shallow in their thinking. I'm squarely in the agnostic camp and I envy those who are firm in their faith, I really do. On the other side of that coin, sometimes people of faith need a reality check. But not for their faith- for their interpretation of their holy books. Then there are the atheists who simply insult people for having faith. It is so complicated maybe no one could write about it really but I have to say the title of the book itself- the G-d Delusion- was really off-putting to me. So I am curious about your take on it.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 2:34 PM

Why?

To garner attention.

What situation arose to give him another opening to do so? Not sure.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 17, 2009 2:36 PM

The church thread, dibs. I know benson is going through a tough time lately but he needs to calm down. ok, ok! I know. Who am I to talk? :-) But when a veritable saint like Bob Marvin can be irked and fought with, what is going on? Whatever it is benson, I really hope you don't leave.

I'm at the point in the book now where he's developing his hypothesis so I can't really give too much of an opinion about it - but I'll report back next week when the OT is slow and I have finished.

Also Bxgrl - you probably wouldn't like the Bill Maher documentary "Religulous" While he made compelling arguements, the whole tone of the film was snarky and condescending to those who are people of faith.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 2:44 PM

thanx, DH. You'll be quizzed :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 2:44 PM

"If you want to read the other side of the story at some point try 'There is a God' by Antony Flew or 'The Reason for God' by Tim Keller."

I wasn't going to go here, but haven't we been hearing the other side of the story basically our whole lives? Even in politics, whereby there is supposed to be separation of church and state, we hear endless references to God and religion. It's amazing that there are any non-believers whatsoever with all of the religious propaganda (for lack of a more tactful term) we are fed from childhood on.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 2:48 PM

I liked Religulous a lot. But then again, I am often snarky and condescending. :-)

And I do agree with bxgrl in that it is nice if people can take comfort in their religion, especially during hard times. I'm also envious of those who truly believe those who pass away move on to a better place. It sucks to believe it's all over when the heart stops beating, but I can't force myself to believe something that I just can't believe in.

Randi, are you coming?

Posted by: jessibaby at June 17, 2009 2:55 PM

Biff - John Tierney in The Times on Tues cites a study that believers cling to life when they're dying more than non-believers do & their families ditto. He expresses surprise that the faithful aren't less reluctant to go to the elysian fields & hang out w/ the angels whereas those who foresee a void tend to exit more easily.

Posted by: Arkady at June 17, 2009 2:56 PM

jessi, maybe. biff, exactly.

Posted by: randolph at June 17, 2009 2:56 PM

I liked religious too - there were some scenes that were a little much for me.

like when he was in that pathetic looking church down south basically questioning the faith of these guys who were reformed criminals. Maher obviously had a better command of the english language and I just thought he was mean about it.

get him in a room with one of my old friar teachers and he would get a pretty good debate.

Posted by: jessibaby at June 17, 2009 2:59 PM

Arkady, that certainly sounds counterintuitive and an interesting study. Maybe the religious ones clinging on the most to life are the ones not expecting to go to heaven but rather to the other place. :-)

Randi, I hope you're serious. It would be great if you could make it. We're a fun and very friendly crowd, despite the impression of us you might get here.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 2:59 PM

Sixyears - how are US History essays evaluated? is it purely content or is spelling, grammar et all taken into account as well?

Content, analytical thinking, and organization. Grammar and spelling don't count at all on the rubric we're given.

Kensingtonian - it's true, many of our students are immigrants, but there is practically no difference between immigrant and American-born students in writing ability. It's unfashionable to teach English grammar in our elementary schools, so American-born students don't learn it. Immigrants do (in their home countries or ESL classes) so it balances out. As you know, your alma mater tends to attract students more motivated than average - I'd say this is especially true among our immigrant population.

The real difference is the level and variety of vocabulary the parents use at home (whether English or some other language), which prepares kids to write well no matter where they came from. Many of our immigrant students, especially those from the former USSR, have very well-educated parents. Even if the family don't speak English at all in the home, it still helps the kids do well in school.

Biff,
The relevance both books is that they argue for the existence of God without relying on the assumptions (i.e. faith) or 'propaganda' you disparage.
The Antony Flew book is that it is an attempt by a formerly atheist philosophy professor to argue that the balance of evidence supports the existence of God. He does not feel that he has had any personal experience of faith.

DH- I am an equal opportunity laugher. I haven't seen it but I'd probably laugh at it- but then again, I don't go to Bill Maher for deep intellectual thought either.

I don't make fun of people's faith- or non-belief. But the things that are done in the name of religion- that's fair game. There's always that disconnect between for example, the teachings of Christ and how believers follow them. Sometimes religious people make the worst Christians (or Muslims or Jews for that matter).

etson, fair enough. In that case, the books sound well worth checking out. I would be extremely interested to learn of any scientific evidence supporting the existence of God. I pride myself on always being open to all sides of every debate before forming an opinion and I have given religion what I would consider more than "a fair chance", but the book you describe seems unique in how it approaches the subject.

On a lighter note, are you joining us tonight?

No, I didn't know that DIBS, but thanks. I can drop the "When you're out of town, you're out of Point" line at a strategic point and look smart.

Good luck ENY - You should tell them no one goes to Soho anymore - I get anxiety just standing out there on my smoke breaks at work!

If you happen to head east after dinner, check out Barrio Chino on Broome and Orchard. Banging margaritas (I feel obligated to tell everyone about this for some reason)

I might have that wrong...it might have been:

"When you're out of Point, you're out of beer."
