Am I beating Biff? Good morning everyone! Happy Friday :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 9:21 AM

First?

Anyone think it's stupid for restaurants to ask "bottled or tap?" Brooklyn ones don't seem to do it (except for the late non-lamented Tempo) but Manhattan ones do.

Posted by: cmu at June 12, 2009 9:22 AM

"Am I beating Biff?" Is that what lesbians call it???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 9:23 AM

Morning all,

So my big news is that the Egg passed the test and got into the gifted program at school.

Either she passed on her own merit (in which case I am proud of her) or she cheated and didn't get caught (in which case I am super proud of her).

Posted by: the chicken at June 12, 2009 9:23 AM

cmu, I don't think its stupid at all. Why would you? My beef is usually when tap isn't offered cold, with ice but just delivered as it comes out of the tap. But that's pretty rare.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 9:25 AM

Cool - congratulations to the Egg.
Is that the school near you in BK or is she still going to be in Manhattan?

Posted by: etson at June 12, 2009 9:25 AM

LOL Dave!

Chicken, congrats on having a gifted egg!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 9:30 AM

Posted by: jessibaby at June 12, 2009 9:42 AM

Good morning all;

It is I, the angry free-market populist (Mr. B.'s characterization of me), here for the Friday NYC trivia question. Today's touches on the history of development in our fair borough.

Much of the manner in which Brooklyn developed can be traced back to the original political dvisions of the borough. For instance, much of what we currently call "Brownstone Brooklyn" was the original area of the City of Brooklyn, in which land was divided and sold in standard 20x100 building lots. The original City of Brooklyn was a wealthy place, hence high-end rowhouses (i.e. Brownstones) were erected.

The original town of Flatbush, on the other hand, was developed in the same way as today's suburbs: sub-divisions. Flatbush was rural late into the 19th century, and by the time it was developed, the idea of "Suburbs in the city" had taken hold. Great developments like Prospect Park South, Midwood Manor and Ditmas Park were built. These developments survive to this day, thanks to a combinaion of restrictive covenents, zoning and landmark protection. Interestingly, the names of these developments almost died off. When I was a kid, nobody referred to these areas by the sub-division's name - it was all simply called "Flatbush", the original town name. Only in recent years have these names been revived as real estate interests have focused on these areas.

Today's trivia quiz focuses on what could arguably be called the greatest suburban subdivision of its day when it was built in another then-rural section of Kings County. Hundreds of grand homes were put up, arguably better than those in Flatbush, and they too were protected by minimum lot regulations and covenents. Alas, however, after about 20 years, the subdivion failed due to a very bad economy at the turn of the 20th century. The management of the subdivison buckled under two pressures: the bad economy, and pressure from developers to build modest rowhouses for upwardly-mobile immigrants from the Lower East Side and elsewhere.

Today almost no trace of this subdivision remains. The old grand houses were largely torn down or converted into multi-family homes. Ironically, however, a shortened version of the sub-division's name became the name of the neighborhood and is well-known today. On the other hand, the name of the original town in this area is largely forgotten.

OK folks, with that background, here is the trivia question:

-what was the name of the sub-division?
-what is the name of the neighborhood today?
-what was the name of the original town in this section of Brooklyn?

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 9:45 AM

First BRG is MIA, then Biff. Is someone kidnapping PLUSAs one by one?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 9:47 AM

Yeah, what did happen to BRG? I think a PLUSA-napper may in fact be on the loose...LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 9:49 AM

Benson, I'm stumped.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 9:50 AM

Cypress Hills, Benson? Or Bushwick?

Posted by: Heather at June 12, 2009 9:51 AM

good post benson. I have absolutely no idea.

Posted by: the chicken at June 12, 2009 9:51 AM

Ahhh, it is so nice to feel missed. As it happens, Miss Moneypenny is away this week, but that is not why the FGVOTD did not get posted first thing. Unbelievably, I actually had something important to do here at Le Star de Death.

What to do? Benson has published his intriguing trivia quiz and others have posted videos already. Should I post a lame (lamer than usual one, that is) just to do it or post a really good one to show everybody how it's done?

(and congrats chicken!)

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 9:52 AM

"Cypress Hills, Benson? Or Bushwick?"

Bzzzzzz. Sorry, wrong answer.

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 9:53 AM

Morning Biffy :) We were about to call out the National Plusa Guard for you!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 9:55 AM

I believe that Benson was referring to Williamsburgh, originally a village, later a city, and now the neighborhood of Williamsburg, with the "h" removed.

Posted by: Bob Marvin at June 12, 2009 9:57 AM

Thanks Snappy.

Were you going to file a Missing PLUSA report?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 9:58 AM

Okay, yeah, I was trying to think of places with big old houses...

Posted by: Heather at June 12, 2009 9:59 AM

Bob;

Good guess, but not correct.

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 9:59 AM

Wild guess for Kensington, because that sounds like it may have been the name of a subdivision at some point.

Posted by: etson at June 12, 2009 10:00 AM

Canarsie? totally wild guess.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 10:01 AM

Yes, Biff, a Missing PLUSA Report indeed! And, I would have offered to represent you for free in a lawsuit against the PLUSA-napper for intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 10:03 AM

If I was taken, I guess the PLUSA-nappers would send the first 10 seconds of my next FGVOTD as proof they have me.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 10:05 AM

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 10:12 AM

Crown Heights?

Nope. Crown Heights was part of the City of Brooklyn.

Let's have one more guess, and then I'll reveal the answer.

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 10:12 AM

Brownsville

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 10:13 AM

Has Bayridge been guessed?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 12, 2009 10:14 AM

Biff...I answered one question correctly (purposefully) so I should get the tour by having the most correct answer. it was the one about the "Chase."

Mitwout or some other Dutch spelling of Midwood

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 12, 2009 10:18 AM

sixyears, that would be my guess but I can't think of any areas where they knocked of big victorians to build multi-families in Midwood.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 10:20 AM

I'll go along with the guess of New Utrecht.

Many prominent Dutch families, Benson, Cropsey, Nostrand, Van Pelt, Van Brunt and DeSille to name a few, called New Utrecht their home.

http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/History.html

Posted by: Bklnite at June 12, 2009 10:20 AM

OK folks, I have to run, so here is the answer:

-what was the name of the sub-division?

Bensonhurst-by-the-sea

-what is the name of the neighborhood today?

Bensonhurst, of course!

-what was the name of the original town in this section of Brooklyn?

New Uterecht.

By the way, as a final piece of trivia, Bensonhurst is named after the owner of the farm that was sub-divided, the Benson family (no relation!). The Benson family had owned this farm for centuries. When the family sold the farm to the sub-division management company, one of their stipulations was that the family farm be preserved, which it was for decades. Alas, when the sub-division failed, the family farm was torn down too.

If you ever get to see photos of what the original Bensonhurst-by-the Sea development looked like, you would be amazed.

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 10:21 AM

I'm guessing Bed-Stuy.

Is anyone else annoyed with the brainwashed pyramid scheme primerica cult newbie "Savenowforcollege" offering referrals in every forum thread?

Those guys are like vampires and will stick their nose everywhere to get referrals and sell crappy products to people. I bet he'll be at the next gathering trying to pitch his products and money advice.

Rant over.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 10:29 AM

No problem, Benson. I would have been wrong - I was going to say Gravesend.

Posted by: East New York at June 12, 2009 10:33 AM

My Rant of the Day involved CVS, Duane Reade, and all other drug store chains. When stores are hurting for business, why allow a large line to form by having one cashier working during rush hour while 6 or so other employees are meandering around trying to look busy or schmoozing with each other? This seems to happen all the time.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 10:44 AM

On top of that Biff, they chat with each other behind the checkout counter slowing down the checkout "experience."

He is not really masking himself well. He claims that he offers free financial advice to community BUT then puts his email address at primerica. Besides that, he is offering referrals to lawyers and other professionals at other forums. Whatever. I hope no one here is stupid enough to contact him. If they truly offered good advice and were educated, I wouldn't mind. Most are brainwashed dumbasses with a dream to make it big.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 11:04 AM

Dave, they get some kind of licenses that let them open Roth and Traditional IRAs for people along with a certificate that lets them sell term, life and disability insurances.

Primerica finds loopholes here and there and they target working class that's not very educated and might not know what CFP designation really is. It's really sad.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 12, 2009 11:06 AM

Arkady, Key Foods and Gristedes are just as bad, which is why the opening of Trader Joe's was such a bonus for those of us in the neighbourhood. While the lines at TJ's get long, they move a lot faster. Plus, the cashiers actually make you feel good about shopping there rather than making you feel like you're ruining their day by making them have to ring up your stuff.

"Hey bxgrl and biff, now that Bigot that shot the security guard at the holocaust museum is claiming that Jews put Obama in the office and that he does anything that the Jew owners tell him."

Not according to White Surpremacist Website of of James Von Brunn. Get your facts straight Dave. We all know that it's a conspiracy and Jews elected him. Sheeeesh.

Von Brunn's Web site also promoted his book, "Kill the Best Gentiles," in which he claimed the Jewish-led "Illuminati" and Jewish figures such as Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx worked "to destroy Western civilization and the Aryan nation that created it."

Biff, and now we have an Illuminati too. Where was I for those elections?

Qaddafi Calls for Feminist Action, Says Women Aren’t Furniture 2009-06-12

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, who
came to Italy with a retinue of 40 female bodyguards and
demanded to meet 700 of the country’s most important women,
called for a feminist uprising and condemned the Arab World for treating women like “furniture.”
“We need a feminist revolution,” Qaddafi said in a speech in Rome today, after meeting Equal Opportunities Minister Mara Carfagna. In the Arab-speaking Middle East, a woman is “like a piece of furniture that one can change whenever one wants without anyone asking why.”

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 11:25 AM

I too would like to add how much I HATE going to CVS on 9th street in Park Slope
The girls in that store are AWFUL. It's usually just 1 girl handling the long line, while the other girls chat with each other in a corner and yell across the store to the 1 "photo counter" person. Then their manager will come from the back, who is like a 70 year old white man and they all bully him and sorta roll their eyes when he asks them to do things. It's really awful.

I'm with biff- today the Presidency (Obama is our sock puppet!)- tomorrow we activate our mole in Saudi Arabia (Oh puhlease people! You thought the Saudi Royal Family is Arab?) :-) Oh- and Qaddafi? One of ours!

Something like 78% of Jewish voters voted for Obama. The ultra-orthodox went for McCain/Palin pretty much. But religious fundamentalists are religious fundamentalists so what can you say?

Posted by: bxgrl at June 12, 2009 11:50 AM

I had heard the Bailey Mansion was going on the market. When I first moved to NYC, my Mom and I would go house hunting in Harlem, and I remember the first time seeing this place. The jaw dropped. I've never seen good photos from inside, or been in there, so I bookmarked them too, and if they ever have an open house, I'll be first in line.

Unless a school buys it, I don't see anyone shelling out that amount of money, and the taxes are enormous for NYC. It isn't really have a neighborhood around it, and is isolated. The last time I was in the area, the large mansion across the street from here was still a transient hotel. It's been used as a setting in several tv shows, like Law and Order. It obviously needs tons of work. For the last 40 years or so, it's been a funeral home, so aside from the parlour floor, which was kept as is for viewing rooms, I don't know what the rest would be like. Funny how they don't mention that little factoid.

Hi folks;

I'm back.

DIBS: OK, you get honorable mention for indicating New Utrecht (although that is the name of the town, not the sub-division).

Arkady: there is a book published on the history of Bensonhurst and Bath Beach that is loaded with photos of the original sub-division. I have it at home, and can't remember the name of the author. It is amazing. Each house was custom-designed for a prominent family. What I found amusing is that they reprint some of the newspaper advertisements for Bensonhurst-by-the-sea, and it extolls its suburban charms pretty much the same way that a developer of McMansions would do today.

Chicken: congratulations!

The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats in Islamabad and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Brits have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out.
Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance". The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender". The rise was precipitated by
a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability.

It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing". Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides".

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile are carrying out pre-emptive strikes on all of their allies, just in case.

people trash talking about the cashier girls @ associated on 5th ave need to step back. they are sweet, nice, and funny. so what if they have a bit of tude and like to gossip with each other. do u want robot cashiers or something?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 1:28 PM

Yes rob...self checkout lines like in the suburbs.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 1:30 PM

My friend and I popped into McDonald's in the Greenpoint area of Jersey City the other day while we were waiting for her car to be repaired.

On the counter, right by the register was a big pump bottle of Jergen's lotion.

I wanted to take a picture of that so badly.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:41 PM

"On the counter, right by the register was a big pump bottle of Jergen's lotion."

THL, I think you just found out the secret to the "special sauce" in the Big Mac!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 1:43 PM

self check out lines is the most F'ed up concept, next to yogurt, i have EVER heard.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 1:43 PM

Those self checkout lines aren't all they're cracked up to be. They malfunction a lot and then you have to just stand there like a dodo while the manager mosey's over and resets everything. Most time syoiu have to start from scratch again.

I have the cashiers that I like (usually the older ladies are the best) and I always try to get on their lines. Worth waiting a minute more to not have someone dump a package of meat on top of your strawberries.

Yes, that happened tome and I made her take them off the bill.

OMG, I'm 38 and I sound like such a cranky old fart.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:44 PM

OMG THL. gross, hot, ghetto, and creepy all at the same time!

*rob*

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 1:46 PM

Biff, I swear it was like one of those gallon sized bottles you get at BJ's.

The cashier had the dragon lady length acrylics, was snapping her gum, and staring at us with dead eyes. Seriously, if she wasn't snapping the gum you might have thought she'd slipped into a coma.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:47 PM

LOL THL im 32 and ive gone into cranky old fartitude myself. i LOVE it tho.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 1:48 PM

Biff, the CVS on Court in Cobble is great. Never had any issues. Associate in Clinton Hill are great too. Guess the "attitude" seem confined in BH and PS - 2 of the snottier hoods in BK

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 1:49 PM

THL, I would have taken a pic, but only AFTER I received my food.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 1:49 PM

Why does my Big Mac taste like Cherry-Almond?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:50 PM

I go to McD for the sausage biscuit every few weeks. I use the automatic checkouts in PA and MA all the time...I love them. Tey are manned by one dedicated person standing in the middle so those usual problems are no big deal. Besides, that person is always super responsive, not like some zombie with attitude you'd find in NYC.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 1:51 PM

M4L, it isn't just BH and PS, the attitude was just as bad when I lived on the Upper East Side. Wait, maybe this IS more prevalent in "snottier" (you mean "snootier"?) hoods.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 1:52 PM

Rob, I go to McD's. prefer Wendy's more

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 1:52 PM

also does anyone else think minimum wage needs to be increased? by at least 3 dollars? i know this is an issue many o you would never think about, but i think about it sometimes. what kindof attitude would u have if you were making 7.15 an hour *i.e* 4 bux after taxes, have? welfare dependency would cease to be so hardcore if we paid people a decent wage.
*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 1:53 PM

For a fast food burger though, nothing beats a Whopper.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 1:54 PM

Honestly Rob, I don't go too often. It just happened to be across from the repair shop and we were starving.

I'd just be happy if stores banned cashiers from having cell phones at the register. There's nothing more annoying than having a cashier pull out their cell phone to respond to a text while you are bagging your groceries or getting the change out of your bag.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:54 PM

Fast food burger, McD's angus burger better than whopper.

best fast food chain stores are those high end roy rogers or arby's (forget which one exactly) I saw in Virginia. Super high end renovation, staffed by all these eastern europe exchange students or something like that, fancy menu,... wonder why we never see them here in NYC

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 1:59 PM

Rob when I was young I worked as a cashier in a grocery store and then as a front end (cashier) manager at that same store. We'd have been fired if we acted like that. Seriously. They were pretty strict and we weren't exactly making a ton of money either.

I think if you agree to do a job do it the best you can.No one is forcing you to be there. If you think you can do better than go and get a better job.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 12, 2009 1:59 PM

Biff, yeah, meant snootier but snottier makes sense too (ie they acting as if they got more snot up their noses)

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 2:01 PM

Yes, THL...I managed a few NAPA auto parts stores after college and rule number 1 was that you'd get fired if you kept talking to the other employees behind the counter while there were customers there.

m4l, it's not about the beef, its the sauce flavor that I like with the Whopper.

Feel free to rewrite that sentence.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 2:02 PM

M4L: i <3 wendy's, but i was mad when they turned the dollar menu into the "value" menu. i.e. prices for a baked potato, chili, etc went from 99 cents to 1.09 to 1.29, to 1.59, and now 1.69. :-/

all in a matter of like a year.

also, at fast food places, the meals are actually no less expensive than if you went to a fauxdega or deli and bought a healthy meal.

get a full meal @ mickey d's these days, 10 bux. you could just get something better for that price anywhere else. sometimes i totally believe places like mcdonalds, BK,etc lure poor people in and take advantage. workers, and patrons btw.

fyi, i think im gonna steal one of the new potted plants mcd's put on the corner of 4th ave and 1st. but there are lots of cameras.. hmmm

"self check out lines is the most F'ed up concept, next to yogurt"

You have a LOOOOONG "hate" list, man.

I dislike long lines and crappy service as much as anyone. But really, what class of person do you expect to find working full-time at a CVS, grocery store, etc.? These people are not among society's highest achievers. Some are students working their way up and others are down-on-their-luck types who will segue to better things. But I'd be willing to bet most of the rest (and the majority) are high-school drop-outs and wastrels. You should be glad they can even use the register.

Posted by: East New York at June 12, 2009 2:06 PM

Rob,
Someone at that wage level would not pay that much in taxes.
That said, I agree with you about minimum wage levels (one of the few issues where I am not on the Conservative / Republican side of things!).

Oh, and I love lots of fast food. Try not to indulge too much though. Also a lot depends on the individual restaurant - some McDonald's are great, some are disgusting.

Posted by: etson at June 12, 2009 2:07 PM

"wastrels" I haven't heard that word since I was a child, along with "blaggards"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 2:07 PM

THL, i so agree. if u have a job, u DO it. im just trying to open up a dialogue about where many of these cashiers' attitudes come from. most did not grow up with a good work ethic to begin with, and when u are working on minimum wage and deal with customers who give attitude, it can be frustrating. next time u are at mickey d's or associated, compliment your cashier's hair, or engage in a conversation. your next trip there will be well worth it.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 12, 2009 2:07 PM

"high end roy rogers or arby's"

Oxymoron

Posted by: East New York at June 12, 2009 2:09 PM

For a good hamburger chain, I would recommend "Inn-n-Out". They are only on the west coast, however.

They keep things simple and fresh. For instance, they cut the potatoes right before they deep-fry them. Hamburgers are broiled.

Yummy! I'm getting hungry just thinking about them.

Posted by: benson at June 12, 2009 2:10 PM

"next time u are at mickey d's or associated, compliment your cashier's hair, or engage in a conversation."

I do, usually with any latin or Asian male cashier or bagger. Sometimes it works. :)

"sometimes i totally believe places like mcdonalds, BK,etc lure poor people in and take advantage"

Well, several of you guys must be "poor" and are being "taken advantage of" (paraphrase) because by your own admission, you eat at these places periodically, semi-regularly or like THL, because you happened to be nearby. Yuck.

Posted by: East New York at June 12, 2009 2:15 PM

Even worse w/ cell phones is the post office. You stand there looking at a sign saying you mustn't use cell phones while at the service window & you have tons of time to read it while you wait for the clerk to get off her (usually) cell.

Deadeye: (sticks out hand for money, doesn't tell me how much, it's assumed I'm to look at the screen)

Me: (hands her a $10)

Deadeye: (big sigh, gum smack, rolls her dead eyes like I handed her a turd)

Me: Wow, cool designs on your nails (thinking- I wonder how much bacteria can be stored under a 1 inch long fingermail).

Deadeye: (stares at me with her deadeyes while handing off the bag of food)

Me: Is there ketchup in the bag?

Deadeye: (squirts some Jergen's in her hand and walks away as though I hadn't uttered a word)

Me: Have a great day!

You're right Rob, she was very open and responsive (I kid).

ENY's post reminds me of an experience I once had.

I made one of my first trips to Japan about 20years ago, as a member of a contingent from AT&T. We went there to start negotiations with a future business partner, which took up almost a whole week. During that time, our business partner was a gracious host, and took us to all sorts of places specializing in various types of Japanese cuisine, for both lunch and dinner. Some of the stuff was good, but really "out there".

The last day of the trip was free time, and a bunch of us went on our own walking tour of Tokyo. As lunch time approached, we stopped in a busy shopping area that "just happened" to have a McDonald's nearby. One person said slowly "So, where do you want to eat"? A period of awkward silence ensued, complete with darting eyes. Finally, someone had the courage to say it:"Damn it, I want Mc Donald's!". We practically ran to the place, and happily wolfed down Big Macs.

Actually, Rob, I think it's quite appropriate. I mean, I don't THINK you would kill anyone, but then again I don't actually know you. But based on your posts, you are very angry at a wide cross-section of society - some person/group/phenomenon manages to piss you off every day, at least enough so that you blog about it. You've described how you've chosen withdrawn from relationships rather than engage people. I mean, we all feel frustration from time to time, but with you it's an obsession (or so it seems). Mr. Brownstoner banned you 'cause (in his opinion anyway) you were incapable of controlling yourself, and this is just a blog! You even use the term "grrr" in your posts! For all I know one day you might snap and go postal.

Posted by: East New York at June 12, 2009 2:43 PM

Rob, reaction is similar to if I gas'd it. people are always stunned (ie frozen face) when this mild looking chinaman turns abruptly into angry loud american.

m4l, yes, Goodburger makes excellemt burgers. When I profess my desire for a Whopper its because I need that high sodium, high fat fast food fix, not becasue I think its a good burger. Hell, Peaches makes an excellent burger, a real burger, not a McD, Wndys or BK burger...those fulfill a different need.

m4l, ever had a Jackson Hole burger???????????????

And, I can honestly say I haven't come across anyone with a perspective on things quite like yours. I sincerely mean that as a compliment.

"When I want a burger I usually get one from a good diner. Burger Deluxe, please!"

That's the ticket! THL knows "the real!" You fast food guys need to try this. BURGER DELUXE - REAL hamburger and fries vs. post-frozen-processed-reanimated-beef-like-product and fries. Same price.

Can you please serve my sugar and milk from serving pieces?

"Can you please serve my sugar and milk from serving pieces?"

At least when it's in those little environmentally unfriendly packets, you know it hasn't been untouched, unlike when they give you milk in a serving piece that might be the result of combining leftover milk from 5 other serving pieces. If I really thought about it, I would probably be freaked out by ketchup and mustard containers at delis whereby people eat some food, dip their dirty cutlery back into the mustard and spread some more. Then I end up using the same condiment containers.

Biff, that was exact speech I gave the mrs on the milk & sugar. but despite compelling reasons which she agreed with, she stuck with via serving pieces

A sugar dispenser and a milk server on each table.

5 Guys are my favorite "fast food" burgers, and my favorite fries ever anywhere.

Bonnies on 5th Ave is the best "home made/diner style" burger I've ever had

As long as you don't bring out these salt and pepper shakers from the last dinner you hosted.

Oh so late to the party, was trying to get some work done — eh, EFF it, it's Friday!!

Congratulations on the Egg, chicken! The Egg doesn't fall far from the chicken! ; )

"how do hausfrau propers do it?!"

It is exhausting, some pay others to do it. I scrub "chez cobble" myself...in bits and pieces over the week.

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 12, 2009 4:05 PM

Troy, I completely agree. When I'm starving, I always make the mistake of ordering the large fries from Five Guys and can barely make a dent in them. The ones that spillover into the bag are usually more than enough for a meal. Bonnie's is an excellent casual place too. I found out about it when it was the ROTD here once and gave it a try and was impressed.

cobble, please try and keep up.

I'll be in your neighborhood, Biff's too, on Saturday afternoon. Drinks???

I have to pick up something I had framed at that shop on Atlantic Ave.

Even better yet, lets get liquored up and then go to the flea!!!! I've never actually been.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 4:18 PM

DIBS, that sounds like a definite possibility if you are talking about tomorrow (Sunday is busy for us).

Shoot me an email and let's coordinate. I'll go to the Flea too. Cobble, I'll let you know if and where we're meeting in case you and BH want to join.

Big Mac = oxymoron

often times, could barely find da beef; looks more like big veggie

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 4:31 PM

"historically, military smarter or the commander in chief?"

I would say commander in chief presently. However, from 2000-2008, that is a very tough call. I would have to say the military during that time period as they somehow were able to sell an invasion to the majority of the people.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 4:33 PM

Biff....they didn't sell it to the majority of the people, just the Commander In Chief.

Oxymoron = Microsoft Works

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 4:36 PM

Biff they even got the conflict neutral Canadians into the fight. that's some hoodwink job

Posted by: more4less at June 12, 2009 4:37 PM

M4L, Canada participated in the invasion of Afghanistan, but not Iraq, which is the invasion to which I was referring. DIBS, most of Congress and the Senate supported the war, as did more than half the citizens I believe. How else did Bush get re-elected? This is way too heavy for a Friday afternoon!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 4:43 PM

Yes, I wouldn't have let myself get dragged into this if I was on the train.

What! Heavens no! Not my PLUSA status!

I'll work harder, really I will, I promise!

Saturday drinks with DIBS and Biff, wow, there's a thought....drunk stumbling cobble being dragged hither and yon by the "professionals"! LOL! I've been to the flea in FG, are you talking about the new one in DUMBO? Uh-oh! Falling behind again! LOL!

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 12, 2009 4:46 PM

Rewrite:

I have never "pulled the train" in drag.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 4:46 PM

NO, the Saturday flea in Ft Greene. I don't do Dumbo.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 4:47 PM

I thought you meant DUMBO too, DIBS, since you were going to be on Atlantic. Just let me know. I can venture to Ft. Greene too.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 4:48 PM

Well, the flea was an afterthought. I was primarily interested in afternoon drinks. Perhaps a bottle of light rose and a cheese platter at Jolie...or anythin else you may think of.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 4:50 PM

Just a suggestion...

Flea then drinks = good deals

Drinks then flea = empty pockets (and tons of crap)

What happened to BRG?

Posted by: dittoburg at June 12, 2009 4:53 PM

Yes, THL...I went Christmas shopping many years ago after getting liquored up. Too many expensive gifts!!!!

Same sort of thing happens at the go go bars in Bangkok.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 12, 2009 4:56 PM

"Perhaps a bottle of light rose and a cheese platter at Jolie"

I was going to email Dirty Hipster too...we might have to change this to Pabst and beercheese if he's free.

Biff, you know me, I'm flexible. TWSS. Oopps, I made that mistake.

Margharitas and nachos sound just as good.

or even better yet, pitchers of Sangria. Who does them good around that area????

PS I will likelt have the Chinese bf in tow.

"pitchers of Sangria."

Mexcal? Dunno, happy to have sangria as well - if DH would attend! BH just gave a thumbs up!

Oh, well in that case nevermind! KIDDING!

Happy to meet said Chinese bf! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 12, 2009 5:04 PM

There are plenty of choices on Atlantic, Court and Smith, including places for sangria, margharitas, etc.

"PS I will likelt have the Chinese bf in tow."

His name is In Tow?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 5:05 PM

He's probably more likable than I am. Certainly more intelligent. But that's not saying much. He's an MD in China but not practicing here.

Don't sell yourself short DIBS, I find you to be very sociable, if one can look past the "wandering eye"! ; )

Any news on BRG? Missing that gal!

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 12, 2009 5:09 PM

"Biff saw him at Union Hall. Not sure if they were introduced."

Yes, I met him at the end (no rewrites please). He was shy but definitely a handsome fellow. And obviously he must be a very patient and tolerant man.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 12, 2009 5:14 PM

I don't know what to tell you Rob, do you know a good accountant? Might be better than a lawyer?

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 12, 2009 5:25 PM

Rob,
You need to speak to an accountant that deals with the IRS first. Then you should contact the IRS if you think they have made a mistake (there should be a phone number on the letter) BUT only do that after you have spoken with a professional. I am not an accountant but can ask around a couple of folks who may know someone cheap.
5 years is a long time for them to go back - usually they don't go back more than three, and it's weird you have not had a letter before (maybe you did but it went to an old address?).
Does the letter say what they think you owe the tax for? Is there a check list attatched to the demand with some of the boxes checked? Is it federal tax on the preceding year's state refund?

Posted by: etson at June 12, 2009 5:27 PM

Also Rob, it's very possible they have made a mistake. But you have to get advice and deal with it - these things don't go away on their own, even if the IRS is wrong.
You have to find someone who can try to prove to them that they are wrong and get them to agree.
If in the end it turns out they are right and you do owe the tax then you will have to work out some kind of payment plan with them.

(As an example, I am the treasurer of a non-profit. A couple of years ago. the IRS tried to charge us five figures in taxes from which we were exempt. We had to provide written proof that we are a non-profit and not liable for the tax they were trying to charge us. It took a lot of letter writing but they ended up agreeing that we did not owe anything.)

thanks etson
