Today's FGVOTD was mentioned the other day.
This is the inaugural song created for the Schoolhouse Rock! Series (there were 46 songs in total). It first aired in 1973.
In 1996, alternative group Blind Melon released a cover version of the song on the Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks album.
In addition (no pun intended) to be educational, it's also a beautiful song.

I know i posted this yesterday but i can't help myself.
Jim cramer of CNBC the same guy who ran a Hedge fund and was smart enough to see the dotcom bubble coming, purchased a building in Brooklyn yesterday.
But what does he know ! I want advice from Missmuffett and BHO .
The Bottom is close.

got link of that purchase? Curious what & where he bought

it's not even 930 and i turn my computer on ready to gripe about a ton of stuff. but i've decided there will be no crisis of the day from me today.
it occurred to me last night that all i do these days, everywhere, is blah blah blah blah crankiness non stop. that crap needs to be flushed down the toilet. fast!
no more negativity from mouth and fingers.
it's raining. it's good for the flowers. (flowers are nice).

Cramer's girlfriend (of a few years now) lives in Brooklyn Heights, hence his current interest in the borough.
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 11, 2009 9:34 AM
sebb, most of us made more $$$ trading AGAINST Cramer's advice than following them. his concepts are sound but his timing is the worst - ie tells you to sell at bottom or buy at top. if his stock timing carries into real estate, he buying far from bottom. late last yr or early this yr, he made repeated calls that June will be pivot point on NYC real estate - good thing is he appears to put $$$ where his mouth is and we'll see if he's regain his forecasting touch or not

i just read the most barf-worthy article this morning in the wall street journal "Will Gen Y Sit Still for a New Chair?" and it talks about how young workers are demanding from their employers 1000 dollar chairs that will suit all of their many "needs". yeah, good luck with that! then they used the term i hate, which is my favorite way of sitting by the way. indian style. there is nothing wrong with the term indian style. now it's called "criss cross applesauce." lol that is the lamest term i have EVER heard. i refuse to say im sitting criss cross applesauce. im sitting indian! and i dont need a 2000 dollar chair to do it! yeah m4less, i guess it took about 10 minutes for old me to come back

I ate at Saraghina last night and the pizza was incredible. Instead of having 2 pizzas we opted for just one followed by the cheese course which was $19 but could have fed four people!!!! I got there around 7:00, wasn't crowded but filled up by the time we left.
There were a number of people who came in to ask about takeout but he says the quality of the crust will deteriorate by the time you get it home and he doesn't want to do it.

"last night i watch the creepiest documentary from 1975"
Rob: Grey Gardens? A fascinating story—downward mobility and insanity at it's "finest". They didn't inherit the house. The house was built by Big Edie's husband, and she and her daughter stayed in it after their divorce. And, well, you saw what happened to them and the house.

Rob, it's not the old members. It's chefs who already made names for themselves in the culinary world competing for their favorite charities. I am disappointed. I expected more from them honestly.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 11, 2009 9:57 AM
Pies range from $12 to $15 I think it was. Don't count on him having a box for you to put it in.
Not everything is Chinese take-out you know.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 11, 2009 9:58 AM
it should have been past top chefs but instead it was a bunch of old dudes what are already established award winning chefs with their own restaurants. so there was no pressure on them and they treated it like a stupid game. and the lame ass judges were too nice. what a waste of time.
Posted by: randolph at June 11, 2009 9:59 AM
DIBS, dont U worry about the details - chinaman has it all figured out. if we can counterfeit anything in the world, we can certainly figure out how to take the pizza to go
Posted by: more4less at June 11, 2009 10:02 AM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 11, 2009 10:03 AM
randi, I actually didn't watch the ending and switch off to UFC Championships between UK and USA. That was way more exciting. Gotta say Etson and Chicken, I thought your guys would take a beating but British did prove to have some pretty good fighters with a drive and stamina.

Biff, In taiwan, the "real" action is when the fight carries out from the parliament halls to the streets. some of those elected officials are current or retired big gangster heads. As the fights erupt, they call for reinforcement - ie "bring the boyz ASAP and meet me in the front of the bldg"

Rob, Grey Gardens is a great movie, tough to get it on netlix, too many people want to watch it. It became a broadway musical and an HBO movie. Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee (2 washington post bigwigs) brought the dump in 79 and re-made it. Little Edie had a cabaret show in NY before her death in FL a couple of years ago. Are you sure you're gay? They are icons for the tribe.

Rob also dislikes museums. If it wasn't for his Miley Cyrus obsession at 30-something years old, we would never believe he is gay.

Speaking of gay obsessions, did anyone get a hold of BRG lately?
Does anyone have her email? is she alive and just busy?
I had so much re-write potential past couple of days, it's almost criminal not to take advantage of that.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 11, 2009 10:55 AM
I don't like musicals either. They're for women visiting from middle America. Husbands want to go to a titty bar and their wives drag them to these.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 11, 2009 10:55 AM
Biff - I'm betting he isn't. Needs OT help w/ wardrobe, doesn't have a bed & isn't interested in decorating.

Cher.
When I was a little kid I thought she was the most glamorous woman ever created. Being that she was half Armenian on her father's side like I was entranced (not too many sexy looking Armenian icons). Those Bob Mackie costumes!!! I wasn't even 3 years old and I had the hair swish over the shoulder move she did down pat.
I love her to pieces.

Exactly. You just hit the nail on the head. It's the development project that has been featured each week here for 89 weeks. This week's post was just put up. It is meant to allow us to follow the development of a project from soup to nuts. Unfortunately, it still seems to be more soup at this point and the only thing that is nuts is the length of time the project is taking to complete.

Why so late with COTD & HOTD. Has the market toatlly dried up???
This is the conundrum that BHO and MM face. There is less and less supply and they may not find something to their liking. Only once the market has bottomed and started to move up will more supply come out. Additionally, rates will be higher. Oh dear, what to do????

biff, who among the PLUSA's can afford that price tag? got me excited thinking you found a juicy listing
Posted by: more4less at June 11, 2009 1:22 PM
Lack of new supply now is probably just seasonality (at least according to a broker whom I trust and with whom I discussed this very issue a couple of weeks ago).
She said new supply always dries up after Memorial Day & then increases again in September.
Posted by: etson at June 11, 2009 1:22 PM
"biff, who among the PLUSA's can afford that price tag?"
M4L, you might be surprised. Plus, perhaps you can snag this for $500K, as HOBOKENROCKS hopes to do one day.
etson is right that traditionally things slow down dramatically after Memorial Day until the fall. But there still seems to have been very few new listings this entire year, at least in Brooklyn Heights, which is the neighbourhood I follow most closely.

You make a great point Dave.
Might I also add, while no one has the perfect answer of when the bottom is and when you should buy I'd like to think that your house is something meant to live in and enjoy. Not just a chit that you cash in for the highest profit imaginable.
I say buy what you can easily afford when you find what you like. Stop killing yourself trying to time this to the millisecond. You could end missing out on your dream home and winding up with a higher interest rate to boot.

Not to be a downer, but talk about life being so unfair. The white supremacist who killed that poor security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum made it to 88 years of age while Anne Frank, Charlie Parker, Mozart, Lou Gehrig, Martin Luther King, John Lennon, etc. etc. etc. all died so young.

Not really a conundrum. More supply will come to the market - as resets hit, people burn through redundancy money, etc.
I, for one, am welcoming higher rates (both for my savings and as a prospective buyer) because that is going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back and pushes prices back to rationality.

Kens, good point. The security guard who shot the killer certainly prevented what could have been a tragic massacre. There is no doubt he saved many lives.
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 11, 2009 2:07 PM
In my book he's a hero - security guards in high risk jobs know they may have to put themselves on the line- and he certainly was. We take them for granted- and that's a shame. These were highly trained armed guards- the Mall is iconic, like the Trade Center was- I guess it was only a matter of time. He was there on the front line and he died for it - he died a hero.

I believe that he does run the show. Yes, the Ayatollah's have certain power over him but it's not dissimilar to the situation in Thailand where the King has the ultimate say when things get out of hand but the politicians get a free hand to continuously muck things up.
Besides, the guy most likely to win is very moderate and has held the Prime Minister's post before. he's not unknown.

The 'supreme leader' is more powerful than the president in Iran, and is unelected. Can't remember what the current guy is called, but he is a religious leader (think he has to be for this role).

DIBS is right re the oil / dollar inverse correlation. In recent weeks, and in general over the past 18 months, it has been very tight.
Rising $, falling commodities and rising treasuries sounds bearish for equities though, DIBS. Reversal of the inflation / recovery trade that has driven the equity market up.

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/06/mortgage-market-remains-solidly-frozen.html
Mortgage Market Remains Solidly Frozen
One problem is lenders are requiring applicants to put up $500 for appraisals and if the amounts do not come in, even if they miss by a tiny bit, the deal is denied and the applicant is out $500. Jeff had a $1.2 million sale stall because an appraisal was $20K short.
A couple years back lenders were letting anything slide, now they appear to be looking for excuses to kill any deal, especially with the recent spike in rates. If the appraisal and paperwork is not perfect, goodbye loan and goodbye $500 appraisal fee. Customers are not too happy to say the least.
Yields on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage securities rose, setting a new high since the Federal Reserve announced plans to buy the bonds to drive down interest rates on new home loans and further thwarting the effort.
U.S. mortgage applications fell last week to the lowest level since February as a jump in borrowing costs discouraged refinancing and signaled that Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s bid to cap rates is stalling, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data released today.
The Fed initially said on Nov. 25 that it would buy as much as $500 billion of mortgage securities, before announcing in March that it would expand the program to as much as $1.25 trillion, as well as buy $300 billion of Treasuries.

Posted by: Return of The What at June 11, 2009 3:05 PM
Borrowers need to understand their alternatives for when the appraisal comes in low. If they are scraping by to come up with the down payment and the closing costs then they ought to walk away because its likely that they'll need to cough up more money for when the low appraisal comes in...or renegotiate the price. Sellers need to be realistic about this too.
This is why you need a lawyer to write you an air tight contract.

Posted by: DeLepp at June 11, 2009 4:42 PM
Wel, the thing that makes this even more ridiculous is that the geese got there by a program many years ago to repopulate the geese in the area! They brought these larger geese in and clipped there wings, so that that generation would 'imprint' to the area. And later generations as well. And it worked! And now they want them to go away.
Perfect.
