PLUSAs born prior to 1980 likely have very fond memories of having seen today's FGVOTD and other related ones over and over before and after their favourite Saturday morning cartoon (and wonderfully bizarre Sid and Marty Krofft shows).

I meant to post this earlier but forgot, until randolph mentioned it the other day in response to one of Rob's posts. Thanks again, randolph.

Per Wiki: Schoolhouse Rock! is a series of animated musical educational short films that aired during the Saturday morning children's programming on the U.S. television network ABC. The topics covered included grammar, science, economics, history, mathematics, and civics. The series produced original episodes between 1973 and 1986...Schoolhouse Rock! began as a commercial advertising venture by David McCall. The idea came to McCall when he noticed one of his sons, who was having trouble in school remembering the multiplication tables, knew the lyrics to many current rock songs.

As well-known as these shorts became, I still feel the music itself was underrated. The vocals and music are terrific. The first one ever made, "Three is a Magic Number" is actually a really beautiful song. However, here is the one that is arguably the most famous:

is it just me, or have old people completely ruined facebook? and some of them are actually out their ruining peoples' lives because of it.

granted, im middle aged (32) and facebook started out only for people in college, so maybe im hypocritical saying this, but im talking people a lot older, like 60+.! no offense people 60+ who are reading this. i just think that you should not invade social networking sites, that's all.

I've never been on facebook. I get a lot of links sent to me by guys that want me to read their facebook post but the whole thing is so lame that I think these guys must be losers just because they're on the site.

I like old people on facebook. Their status updates make my life sound more exciting then it really is. "Joe shmo is picking fresh strawberries to put in his oatmeal" ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

1.) i stupidly accepted the friendship of my grandmother's son's baby momma.

2.) that baby momma told everyone and now i have my grandmother's old ass friends trying add me.! and family members i want nothing to be a part of!

3.) i dont want my grandmother seeing pictures of me that i post and other people post of me. (she has cataracts tho so i guess it might not be THAT bad, but still). now i have to censor everything i say? SO annoying.

Oldies know better than to have compromising images broadcast - there are lots of ways to narrow-cast them. On the few links I have, it's young people who have the boring stuff: "I'm reading____". "It's a beautiful day here." etc.

Posted by: Arkady at June 10, 2009 9:41 AM

"I've never been on facebook. I get a lot of links sent to me by guys that want me to read their facebook post but the whole thing is so lame that I think these guys must be losers just because they're on the site."

Good thing nobody around here would ever be considered lame or a loser by posting multiple times on the same site day after day!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 10, 2009 9:44 AM

Rob - But do you always orient your head/feet in the same direction?

Posted by: Arkady at June 10, 2009 9:45 AM

I have avoided Facebook for that exact reason. Don't want everyone having access to everything & don't have time to work out who should see what. Not that I am interesting and mysterious or anything - more just paranoid!

Posted by: etson at June 10, 2009 9:46 AM

Biff, "I'm just a Bill" was was/is my favorite. Great song and very informative.

I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city.
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law some day
At least I hope and pray that I will
But today I am still just a bill.

Interjection!

Posted by: wasder at June 10, 2009 9:49 AM

the WORST part about facebook is that if you try to change your name on it so people cant search you, it still allows for your original name to be searched! grrrr.

arkady, i dont know. i wonder if sleeping on a leather sofa is bad for the back, but it's very comfy. better than the one i used before. and better than when i slept on a hardwood floor in harlem lol.

Rob,
The very last thing you should be worrying about is old people on facebook. Forget facebook. By the way, how much longer do you think your body will let you get away with sleeping on a couch rather than a proper bed?

Posted by: sam at June 10, 2009 9:54 AM

Rob - Comfy is all that counts but you should track whether you feel better after a night when your head was to the left or right - that would constitute which side you're getting out on the next morning. We here know there are good & bad days.

Posted by: Arkady at June 10, 2009 9:55 AM

Today's my birthday
just thought I would announce that!

and I love Facebook, it's fun - who cares if oldies are on it - am sure teens will move on verrry shortly to some other new social networking site. Look what happened to Myspace!

No facebook for me. I saw all my old Highschool peeps were on there with and asking about and searching for me and I said NO WAY. My 20th reuinion is this year so everyone is coming out of the woodwork looking for people.

Not to be mean but I moved away for a reason and if I still wanted to be in touch with you I would via email and phone. Also, if we didn't talk in H.S. why the heck would I all of a sudden now want to be pals with you?

Anything I put out publicly, like here or on my blog is done anonymously as Townhouselady.

facebook annoys me cuz most of the people who i thought were like really stupid in high school turned out to have great careers and stuff. while i had no life and studied my ass off, i wound up having the opposite! oh well. bitter grapes i know. also pretty much every single person has kids. it's weird.

people in my high school were not mean or anything. it wasn't very clique-ish. it was probably one of the most (truly) diverse high schools in north jersey both racially and economically. so that was cool. when i went to college i was like holy crap i had a hard time dealing with so many white people.

I have my 20th reunion coming up also. I'm not on facebook at all, but my middle school son is. Facebook has some reunion tracker thingy and my son stumbled upon the reunion page. Next thing he showing me pictures of myself in high school. Sadly, there where no pictures of me hitting the books or striking studious poses. For some reason all I see are pictures of me drinking beers, partying and generally living the good life of a suburban teenager.

Apparently some of my high school buddies thought it would be a good idea post photos of the good ole days. Nothing to be ashamed of. It just makes it that much harder to be a hypocritical parent in the age of social networking.

I don't know if anyone's noticed this about me but, as a Taurus, so once I've determined I don't like you your chances of getting back in the fold are slim to none.

I really had a very wide group of friends in school but if you did something shady enough for me to cast you off, you're on that island for good. I'm not coming back to bring you supplies.

Anyways, I guess I'm just not one of these types to care what everyone's doing now. If I did, I'd know already.

"anyone watch RHONJ?

Yes, and you're so right- fluffed and folded. Very disappointing. I guess after the stripping kidnapping Columbian cartel coke whore episode anything else is going to be a little bit of a letdown.

She needs to stop worrying about those bubbies and get that hairline lasered. seriously T.

super loyal however super stubborn. Agreed, they do make great mates.
THL - I get ya on the FB thing.
OK - wow T does need some lasering - hahahaha! but she really is painfully flat. I could understand her wanting to get implants. She's like a negative A cup. I felt bad for her in the lingerie/swim store with the other girls and she's standing there looking like a pre-pubescent boy

Posted by: gemini10 at June 10, 2009 10:40 AM

"anyone watch RHONJ?"

Oh yes I did! Yes, a bit of fluff, next week looks to be CRAZY(ier)!
The convo at the restaurant with the kids about the bubbies, was INSANE. Nice lesson for the girls.
The scene with Danielle and the boyfriend was extremely cringe worthy.

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 10, 2009 10:43 AM

Moi difficult? Actually it's nothing I haven't heard before. Once you're in you're golden though. We spoil our peoples rotten. I'll do anything for my family and friends. To a fault.

I wonder if Carolyn Manzo (RHNJ) is a Taurus? Maybe that's why I love her "family is everything" attitude so much.

But Gem, at least she'll never sag. Even after popping out that litter of hers. Eh, whatever makes her feelgood.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 10, 2009 10:45 AM

"Wherre's the What today???"

Hiya guys just sitting here witnessing the long decent into Hell!

BTW Brownstoner missed two important stories!

Oh guys the Bond Market isn't looking so hot now. The 10 and 30 year auctions are coming up and everyone is sliding to the door.

The big news is INFLATION is roaring back with a vengeance! Do you know Gas is up 40% in the last couple of months and it's not part of my imagination I have a truck to fill up. This will have a bad effect of the summer driving season and economy.

Get Ready for Inflation and Higher Interest Rates

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124458888993599879.html

he Fed controls the monetary base 100% and does so by purchasing and selling assets in the open market. By such a radical move, the Fed signaled a 180-degree shift in its focus from an anti-inflation position to an anti-deflation position.

The percentage increase in the monetary base is the largest increase in the past 50 years by a factor of 10

This why the selloff in the long end of the Bond Market continues and it's not looking good for housing. Now you can chime in with your "drivel"..

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 10, 2009 12:06 PM

Everyone, I have an actual question: My girlfriend and I are looking for an 8/1 rental in Fort Greene for $2000-2200. We really don't want to pay a broker. Does anyone know how low I can negotiate a broker fee in this market? People can't still be paying 15% when craigslist is full of no fee places. If anyone has experience in this matter, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Posted by: GuyIncognito at June 10, 2009 12:11 PM

Biff,

When I was in the insurance Biz there is a company named ALTA Health and they wanted to establish with us so they sent over a bunch of quote/packages and frankly, they were ridiculous.

So I got back on the phone with the rep who is an older Jewish man and we were going back and forth discussing it blah, blah, blah, he wouldn't budge.

Finally I blurted, "ALTA, this is CACA."

He totally got it. Laughed hysterical and got us better packages.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 10, 2009 12:12 PM

Ummmmm, how about craigslist???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 10, 2009 12:13 PM

bicycles are lovely in the country, or on Governor's Island, or on quiet residential streets, but it is nutty to ride a bike at rush hour on crowded city streets where people are driving massive steel vehicles bumper to bumper and are driving them from a position nine feet above your helmet. Some of these truckers could run you over and think they hit a squirrel.
I know two people who have been killed, that's killed, as in "kingdom come", riding bikes in Manhattan. I dunno, it is one of those things like marathon running that seems to produce so many injuries and fatalities but is nevertheless considered "good for you". Are we a masochistic society?

Posted by: sam at June 10, 2009 12:15 PM

"We really don't want to pay a broker."

Then get out and do the work for your self!

"My girlfriend and I are looking for an 8/1 rental in Fort Greene for $2000-2200."

Lookie here another sucker! Have you look at Manhattan???

"Does anyone know how low I can negotiate a broker fee in this market?"

Whatever the Broker want to do...

"People can't still be paying 15% when craigslist is full of no fee places."

The No-Fee places are from Landlords that is in Foreclosure and they're 'Rent Skimming'! Most No-Fee places are fucking Dumps anyway!

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: Return of The What at June 10, 2009 12:21 PM

I'm with the What on that one, each and every point.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 10, 2009 12:29 PM

GuvIncognito,
Identify the buildings you like and call management companies / landlords direct and ask if they have availability. Supers and doormen often know about upcoming vacancies as well. It's a couple of weeks early for anyone to know much about 8/1 but now is a good time to do your research.
If none of the above applies, you will be left using a broker. I have no idea if brokers are accepting less than 15% now. I doubt it but it's possible.

Posted by: etson at June 10, 2009 12:30 PM

Rob, aren't incomes depending on buildings? some require like 20K some require 40K cap. I could never understand the reasoning.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 10, 2009 12:44 PM

no ken, you are thinking about buildings that have an "affordable" component to them. with just the regular projects there is a set amount. tho you have to pay 1/3 of your income to rent. living in the projects works out for someone who makes 20 - 30 K, but if you are between 40 and 60 K, it doesnt make sense to live in the projects if you have to pay 1/3 of your rent since you can find housing elsewhere. and it's not fun living in the projects. however it's still impossible to get in if youre a single male with no children. which i find extremely unfair. i wouldnt want to live in the projects tho. id feel like a poser.

The actual apartments in NYC public housing are actually pretty freakin huge and bright (if you don't mind the cinderblock walls) - the hallways and elevators are pretty dismal (every housing project i've been in smells like urine)

There is a pretty strong sense of community though - a friend's grandmother lives in a housing project in the south bronx and everyone leaves their doors open, kids and teenagers would stop in to say hi and the grandmother would feed them. I used to enjoy visiting

Posted by: more4less at June 10, 2009 1:01 PM

Okay, I have a real estate related question.

In the UK, it is the landlord who pays the broker fee. There are two models - 1) get a vetted tenant, get a flat fee, 2) enter into a maintenance contract where you give up a percentage of the rent and the broker is the tenants point of contact if anything needs fixing (although the landlord still pays for the repairs themselves).

Why is this not more prevalent in NY? One argument is that it will be factored into higher rents but rents are broadly comparable over here. It seems silly for the tenant to have to pay up front for the privilege of living in your apartment. What gives?

Posted by: the chicken at June 10, 2009 1:02 PM

Sorry What, I have not "look at Manhattan". After 5 years in Fort Greene I don't want to leave and the market is very different from when I first started out.

Just wondering if anyone here has had any personal experience negotiating a lower fee in Brooklyn in this market. Trying to do the legwork before I actually start looking.

Posted by: GuyIncognito at June 10, 2009 1:02 PM

m4l - I've been playing with it this week & having no luck - all I get is NBC while I usually watch CBS & PBS. I have a couple of antenna boosters I've tried too. I phoned FCC who told me that PS is one of the worst places for over-the-air. She also said that getting a new t.v. wouldn't do any better than the converter I have. I've just located an old roof antenna wire dangling down my bldg. & am about to see if that helps.

"a ton of projects have fabu water views too.

Posted by: more4less at June 10, 2009 1:01 PM"

Why is that? If you are living in publicly-subsidised housing, you should get what you are given. I know it's a vote-loser if people are kicked out after they've been living for a while but surely a water view has always commanded a premium and therefore this would have been known about before the buildings were even put up.

Posted by: the chicken at June 10, 2009 1:06 PM

"id feel like a poser."

Now why is that? In many ways, Rob, you'd fit right in. Based on your comments on a variety of subjects (40's furniture, cars, bodegas, etc.) you appear to have quite a lot in common with many of the people who live in NYC public housing projects.

Posted by: East New York at June 10, 2009 1:07 PM

Not sure of much else then what you just stated about the UK chicken - but my thoughts:

For a while vacancy rates were so low in NYC that it turned into a competetion between tenants to find decent apartments (apartments basically rented themselves)

In a normal environment - it would seem its the landlord who should be competing over tenants, thus paying the broker fee.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 10, 2009 1:09 PM

Chicken - When I lived in Shepherd's Bush I paid directly to the landlord who had held a lottery for the lease - the only time I've won a game of chance. He had an 'agent' I could complain to if something were wrong but usually the agent told me to get it repaired & take it off the next week's rent.

I hooked up one for my neighbor here in J.C. and the reception is pretty good except that you do have to re-adjust the antenna from certain stations. FYI, DH's 12:58 post is quite accurate. Public housing project apartments tend to be pretty large. The public spaces do tend to suffer the effects of indifference. And, there is normally a strong sense of community among public housing project residents. Also, as M4L said, there are several public housing projects with tremendous views. There are also many people (as foreign as the concept is to many here) who make much more than they report and live in public housing projects by choice, thereby saving on housing costs.

M4L, don't forget the helicopter to get there and back fast and to avoid the insane weekend traffic.

Speaking of helicopters, I was surprised when I first heard about this.
The (PanAm/MetLife) building once provided helicopter service to John F. Kennedy International Airport, a seven-minute flight that left from the rooftop helipad. This service was offered from December 21, 1965 to February 18, 1968 by New York Airways and for a few months in 1977. It ended after a major accident that killed five people. On May 16, 1977, a broken landing gear caused a parked Sikorsky S-61L with rotors still turning to tip over, killing four people who were outside the helicopter waiting to board, including exploitation filmmaker Michael Findlay. Part of a rotor blade sailed over the side of the building and killed a pedestrian on the corner of Madison and 43rd Street. Two other people were seriously injured.

GuyIncognito - I am sure you can find something pretty decent on craigslist as no-fee apartment. I know some of my friends called different brokers and specified that they are not willing to pay a fee and only will look at no-fee apartments and brokers showed them a few that the landlords were paying the broker fees but I don't think they ended up getting any of those at the end.

Also look at it this way, If you're looking at a 2,200 apartment that a broker is showing you and he can negotiate it down to say 1,900-2,000 and you love the place, he just covered his own fee. Don't understimate brokers because, some of the time, they are able to get you more for your money hence making their fees worth it.

Biff I agree. My favorite turkish place that's 5 min car ride to my house is open for over 20 years and till this day they don't deliver. You can call them to place an order and pick up at anytime you specify and they'll accomodate, yet they don't hire a delivery guy to deliver the food. Their business would increase without a doubt if they did that. Everytime I eat there (and it's often) they have 3-4 people picking up take out in that span.

But if you seriously digging Red Hook and those prices, I thought JC is a worthy alternative to check out. I think the areas around the parks are good to check out - hamilton park, van vorst,.. so is the area along the water (super high taxes though).

based on limited knowledge, I think area around hamilton park and area near grove st station are decent choices - can find some good value, near enough shops, near path stations, etc.

I think you might be able to ride bike to check it out - albeit dont recall seeing bike lanes

"JB, you can come with me to DiFara's anytime! I'm willing to wait in line with you, too."

Thanks, that's sweet. Biff, I guess you'll just have to meet us down in Midwood :)

"his #1 gender verifier"

Biff, I'd say you're my *only* gender verifier. What kind of slice do you want?

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 10, 2009 5:33 PM

THL, yeah that's the house. wife was lukewarm about chking it out earlier (job concerns,....) so never got in to see it. I walked around that area and it's really nice. think it's still on mkt and it's dropped 60k or 70k since then.

haha sixyears, for those not fortunate enough to live within walking distance, the long train ride and the long line must be part of the allure!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 10, 2009 5:35 PM

"I just invited Silex to the next drinkup in the QOTD thread. While I was ignored, at least BrooklynGreene expressed interest! I need to promote this more"

haha Biff, "haiku for asking"

Posted by: jessibaby at June 10, 2009 5:37 PM

I understand. I didn't go in but I really loved the details on the outside. I think it's going to need a lot of TLC but it really looks like it has some good bones. I wished they'd have an openhouse so I could go and look anonymously.

It's even better know that the house next door will be in great shape once they complete that literally gut reno.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 10, 2009 5:37 PM

JB, that was sixyears who invited you to wait in line with him.

sixyears...you have good taste in pizza and posters. I'll trust your judgement on what you think is best.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 10, 2009 5:38 PM

Biff, I know that it was sixyears. I was inviting you to wait in line with us.

Posted by: jessibaby at June 10, 2009 5:43 PM

I would hate to be a third wheel. What say I wait at the bar at Sycamore's and you come drop off the slices once you get them?

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 10, 2009 5:46 PM

JB, don't forget who gave you early endorsement. It was me who said you're very cute and that was b4 the Biff verification

Posted by: more4less at June 10, 2009 5:47 PM

I'm kinda scared to ride my bike home today after all the gloom and doom the past few days on here.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 10, 2009 5:49 PM

THL, it does look real good and think realtor said it has original details. I'll drive by that house again later and convince my wife to chk it out.

outta here.

Come on, chicken. You have a little one /little ones in the nest. You should know that I welcome ANY opportunity to get out of the house for drinks, no matter how far I need to travel...even if it means going south of Union Street!

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 10, 2009 5:58 PM

Which reminds me, the man-date needs to be scheduled!

Okay - block off a day at the beginning of July.

What's a "man-date"?

Posted by: the chicken at June 10, 2009 6:21 PM

"What's a "man-date"?"

it's what guys do who are involved in a "bromance"

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 10, 2009 6:25 PM

Chicken, the rules are described in detail here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/10/fashion/10date.html

Of course, this Sycamore outing won't be limited to Team Hetero.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 10, 2009 6:26 PM

Great article sixyears. Funny, but very true.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 10, 2009 6:45 PM

Was it a "bromance"
In Brideshead Revisited
Between the two men?

(Look, if I weren't trying this haiku thing out, I'd be writing lousy romance novels.)
