Today's FGVOTD is a tribute to...randolph?? Yes, that is right.

Randolph had just one post in yesterday's Open Thread, but it surprised many of us by showing a different side of her (him?).

For your support of the Marriage Equality Act and criticism of "sub literate religious fanatics", this one's for you, Randi. It is a hilarious video showing what would America would be like if gay marriage was legalized.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 9, 2009 9:26 AM

I haven't read any commentary on it but I assume the shift in the NYS legislature yesterday kills the gay marriage bill. Anybody seen any analysis?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 9, 2009 10:04 AM

I have read stuff that makes the assumption that it is dead, in part because they would not now have time to vote.
That said, it was not looking that good for the bill anyway.
No Senate Republicans were officially in favor last I heard(although a couple probably would have 'come out' for it at the last minute). Several Democrats were openly opposed as well. So math would have been tough even if it did come up for a vote.

etson is right. The shift will mean the death of the bill, at least for now, as there are only two weeks left to get it pushed through prior to the summer recess. This is not enough time, especially in light of the current opposition to the bill.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 9, 2009 10:16 AM

there goes a potential tax rev uplift for the state and federal gov. Hitting gay couples with the lovely marriage penalty would've yielded much needed tax rev. Politicians are just enough of bean counter mindset

dibs, I do not think that the gay marriage bill is dead, it was just placed in a politically-induced coma for a year or two.

im gay. and am i the only one who gets a little nauseated seeing two grooms on top of a wedding cake? or two brides? im sorry, but it's lame. let heteros have their thing. jeez. and strip the heteros of any tax benefits tho for being married. people shouldnt get all the benefits they get just because they get "married". it's a ridiculous concept that needs to end sooner than gay marriage needs to begin. of course im probably just bitter and jaded cuz im single and most likely forever will be.

M4L and others, doesn't the Defense of Marriage Act (signed by the triangulating President Clinton way back in the election year of 1996) ban recognition of same-sex marriages in the federal tax code, even if sanctioned by a particular state? I'm not sure, just asking.

Listen to the Brooklynites talk about good pizza when they so many options at their disposal....

Try being used to delicious Brooklyn pizza then moving to Jersey City!

We went through 6 or 7 different places till found found an O.k. one. Then when we moved into the house 10 blocks from where we were renting we were suddenly out of their delivery area- ACK!!

Luckily we moved into an area that had a place that was our pizza salvation. A real transplanted New Yorker making Italian pizza in Jersey. FINALLY.

Honestly, I could live almost anywhere so long as there was good pizza and Chinese delivery.

"let heteros have their thing. jeez. and strip the heteros of any tax benefits tho for being married. people shouldnt get all the benefits they get just because they get "married""

Rob, I explained to you once before, and of course you refuse to listen, that married people generally pay higher taxes than single couples. M4L at @10:23 has it right, and you have it wrong. As usual.

If two people, gay are o/w, are co-habiting and make a salary of 80k each per year, they pay taxes each on only 80k of salary. When they get married, they pay tax on 160k in a higher tax bracket.

The tax code was designed, way back when, to allow for a tax break for the 'traditional family', i.e., daddy went to work and mommy stayed home. Daddy got the tax breaks.

However there are a lot fewer 'traditional families' today. In most cases, both spouses work, altho one may take off a bit to have children.

Therefore the more usual scenario is the 'marriage penalty' where it is actually cheaper to co-habit than to marry. This has frustrated conservatives to no end and there have been half-assed attempts to eliminate or reduce it, but the problem always is that the reduced taxes paid must be made up from somewhere else, like defense spending (lol).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 9, 2009 12:58 PM

Kens, a little education for my naive friend:

(1) pork fried rice is left over rice + left over pork
(2) lobster source is simply starch + egg white source; no lobster; just in the name
(3)egg drop is starch + egg yolk
(4) fried wonton - cant be sure but I suspect they're left over steamed wonton

Posted by: more4less at June 9, 2009 1:02 PM

M4L- It's like the pizza/burger comparison I make.

You go anywhere other than the New York and surrounding area and say lets order pizza and out comes a Domino's or Papa John's menu. You say let's get burgers and it's a fast food joint like McD's or the like.

Now, if I say I want pizza or a burger this is NOT what I mean. I want a real slice or a real hamburger from a grill. You can't substitute it with Domino's or McD's.

Sometime I do actually crave Domino's or McD's but it's a specific craving for fast food. Not the real thing.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 9, 2009 1:03 PM

M4L - My bf used to own House of Chan in mid-town & he makes scratch fried rice. Also fried dumplings - no left-over anything. Egg drop soup is good if the soup is good - just swirl whites into it. His lobster sauce starts w/ lobster shells - similar to making a bisque.
THL - I agree, McD's is a thing in itself that I sometimes crave but those mass-market pizzas have never hit any spot in my anatomy.

Anyone who lives in NYC and indulges in Dominos is either sadly misinformed, or just plain nuts. On the other hand, MacDonalds, consumed in sufficient quantities, is simply life-threatening. I'd imagine it's actually worse - or at least as bad - than anything you can get at a "Chinese" restaurant (the delivery kind).

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 1:27 PM

On the fried rice subject, you can't make decent fried rice without using leftover rice (or at least cold rice) - otherwise it clumps too much.

Posted by: the chicken at June 9, 2009 1:33 PM

only thing I order from dominos are those buffalo chicken nuggets thingie. they're good. McD's breakfast items are pretty competitive - love those biscuit sandwich

"Thingie" is the right word, M4L. You're playing Russian Roulette with that.....er, stuff. But hey, you only go around once!

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 1:47 PM

kens, other than meeting friends for dim sum at those big restuarants along 8th ave, haven't been to BK restaurants for lunch or dinner hence can't give a recommendation (ie dim sum is not enough to give a rating).

Ah, no, I hadn't seen the thread - but I just peeked. I ran into Louie the day after his mother died. She had been pretty sick for awhile. I've seen Mario to talk to on the street. He's 83 (?), I think, it might be time for him to relax a little. He told me his wife did everything for him. He had to learn how to iron his shirts, and shop, etc.

Although, I'll miss HIS pizza, I don't like the other guys crust as much as Mario's - not thin [and almost burned!] enough.

"ENY, would a "good" chinese restaurant do well in crown heights?"

Perhaps, but I think they'd have to be a bit pioneering. A "good" place would imply a sit-down meal, and I think there are only a few of these in Crown Heights right now. In my experience, middle-class CH folks tend to head over to Prospect Heights, Park Slope, etc. for "good" Brooklyn restaurants. But, for this same reason, such a place in Crown Heights might work - it would be novel. But as they say, location would mean everything. Perhaps on Franklin Avenue, one of the "nicer" Crown Heights retail strips.

There's a good bagel place on Court Street in Cobble Hill (forgot the name, maybe not so many good bagels b/c so many good Italian bakeries nearby?)

Not sure of your neighborhood Kensington, but if nearby CH, Sichuan Garden is pretty good. Not worth travelling for, but tasty. Chance on Smith Street is sort of Thai / fusion, and I really like it. Tasty and cheap and actually pretty groovy decor for dining in.

BXGIRL - thanks for posting that link. I read the story a couple days ago and was so upset but felt powerless to do anything. Agree with all, cruelty to animals / any living thing is a sign of serious issues. Ugh, it makes me sick to think about it.

Gosh you're all such food snobs. Granted I know that Some of the items we've mentioned like MCD's, Chinese delivery, Dominos, and Olive Garden can't be found in any Michelin Guides but still....yeesh.

I'm so going to offer any of you one of the S'mores Brownies I just made.

The brownie itself started off from a box mix. I didn't fly in chocolate from Switzerland made from organic cacao beans and shave it down myself. I didn't even use free range organic eggs from a food coop. I bought mine at BJ's. I even used graham crackers from a box.

I'm heinously declasse , I know.

Olive Garden surprisngly makes a good tomato sauce and I have had it with plain cheese raviloi's. It was good - no, not amazing - but good enough. I wouldn't go and order something too over the top like lasange with alfredo cream sauce and a side of manicotti - but it's not that bad!

Yeah, that's right - I'm a snob when it comes to Italian food. I'm black, but my Mom grew up in an Italian/black neighborhood in Newark, and her friends taught her to make Italian dishes, and she passed several on to me. The thing is that it is remarkably simple to make GOOD Italian food - the cuisine mostly is based on several simple ingredients. It doesn't have to be expensive to be good, but it should be made with some care and with a personal touch. That just won't happen in a mass-market category restaurant like Olive Garden. Hey, I'm sure the food there is "not amazing - but good enough," but I don't HAVE to accept "good enough" when it comes to Italian food here. This is NYC, dammit!! I can choose from "outstanding" (i.e., the better Italian restaurants in all five boroughs) or "very good" (what I make myself). Olive Garden is for chumps.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 9, 2009 3:23 PM

Bxgrl, I have a by scratch recipe for them but I think you may have realized for every day stuff I like to do things quick and dirty, this is the easy cheat way...

Make a brownie mix like you normally would bake them halfway (abotu 20 minutes) then put large crumbles of graham crackers all over the top (not powder fine, like one quarter to one half inch-ish bits) and cover with marshmallows (the small ones work better). Continue baking they may take a little longer than normal. Do the toothpick test.

See easy. If you want the from scratch recipe I can email it to you (it is better).

When I went to the first adult session of NASA Space Camp I met people who had never been to a restaurant that wasn't a franchise. I've never been to Olive Garden, Applebee's, TGIF, etc. - but if you were raised out of NYC or other major metro area, your tastes were probably set by that kind of cuisine so whatever tastes good to you tastes good to you.

Posted by: Arkady at June 9, 2009 3:39 PM

ENY...Vetri is expensive and hard to get into without a reservation but maybe not on a Wednesday. They have a sister restaurant north on Broad Street that is just as good but more casual...Osteria.

LeVirtu is truly excellent. It's in South Philly on Passyunk almost where it meets Broad St. It's more casual and its not expensive and I believe the food rivals Vetri.
If she goes make sure they get an order of the truffled mushroom pappardelle.

Applebees - not sure if it's just my local one in Long Island employing Sasquatch, but there have been very few times I've gone there I haven't found hair in my food. And not little hairs, big long ones - which typically results in my sending my food back and drinking the rest of the meal.

No, I don't think that's it. This place is run by a younger staff and the service is crappy. I just kept going because it was the one place to get a good carbonara. That and everyone else at worked liked it. Frankly I think it's overpriced but serviceable.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 9, 2009 3:44 PM

"ENY, what's your opinion about Applebee's?"

It's not bad for what it is. When I worked in Secaucus, I ate there from time to time. That's the only kind of restaurants there are in those corporate parks. Applebees is a glorified diner. I know that because I worked as a cook in a diner (Juniors). In almost any diner, as long as you stick to the right dishes (burgers, chicken, etc.) you'll do fine. However, you don't go into a place like that looking for, let's say, sea bass with saffron risotto.

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 3:44 PM

I really don't know, but I do know bad taste is much more common in this country - irrespective of race - than good. Plus, I don't like a lot of things some other black people do. Grits, for example....disgusting! But I agree that lots of black folks go to Olive Garden and Red Lobster.

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 3:49 PM

ENY, easy answer to G10's question is you weren't standing in front of those enterprises to EDUCATE them that this "good enough" food is not good enough for them. Throw out a few "if you eat here, you're a chump" and you'll get your point across or get your behind beaten

Posted by: more4less at June 9, 2009 3:53 PM

The Carmines in the Financial District north of Hanover Square was in the ground floor of a modern office building. It was not tacky nor do I remember murals. Wood paneling, yes. The waiters were professional, not wanabe actors, the food was very good and expensive. It was strictly an expense account joint. I ate there twice. I used to prefer la torre d'or on the top floor of 14 Wall Street. Very Robber Baron-ey. Great views and nice terraces. I don't think it is in business any longer.

"THL, can you please stop posting pics and videos all the time? It's so annoying when posters do that. :-)"

Uhhhh....The short answer is NO!

The long answer is, don't like it, don't click on it. Oh and the term 'shove it' also comes to mind.

Bridge cafe is around the corner from where this place was, sam.

Somebody could use a brownie right about now.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 9, 2009 4:10 PM

Biff, I had major crush on Telly when I was a kid. When I used to get to pick out a candy at the local deli I'd always grab a Charms lollipop.

I'm assuming you knew I was kidding too.

Dibs, Meyers Hotel?

Posted by: sam at June 9, 2009 4:11 PM

Speaking of Italian food, I'm making chicken livers & onions sauteed in bacon fat and served over pappardelle for dinner tonight.

Nope, sam.

"I'm assuming you knew I was kidding too."

Actually, to be honest, I got a bit nervous thinking you didn't realize I said it as a joke since I'M notorious for posting lots 'o links to pics and videos.

PHEW...I need a brownie...

never been to either DIBS - I'll have to check it out.

But "best in brooklyn" is quite a ballsy statement!

For the record, Mario batali has spent quite a bit of time in Italy and did a little pizza judging a few months ago

papardelle? Dave, are you gay??

sam, if I was basing my selection on being gay I would have said canneloni. That said, they're rather short and stubby.

least fav has to be pasta that one has to cook vs. being served it - spoken like a true lazy husband (but perfectly acceptable in Chinese culture; Chicken, back me up here)

I notice that more and more I either like homecooked tomato sauce or butter and cheese on my pasta(any kind)
for some reason I got off my olive oil kick with pasta

Dibs -you are way too fancy for me with your wild boar ragu - hahahah! - but I do love it when Olive Garden has it as a special!

Oooohhh, I didn't even consider gnocchi when choosing my favs.

Love gnocchi, I make a great potato one. I never tried making the ricotta cheese style but have had in a restaurant and it was really good.

from north bergen & jersey city. yes, i used to walk along what was basically a highway, but there were also weeds you can walk thru and stuff. it was probably an 1 walk. not too bad. maybe longer. there were even a few times people would stop their car and ask if i wanted a ride. shaaaaaaady! never got in their cars tho ahhaha.

am sure you like bikes and kids and dogs, flowers and parks - but you probably just like to enjoy those things without having to go on and on about how great they are?
am I right?

Yeah, THL, it's pretty great. My friend was trying to impress this guy once and I served as her ghost chef: I made the gnocchi and left before her dude arrived and let her take the credit.

2 hamburger, 6 chicken nuggets, fries and an apple pie.

I won't tell you what I had for the main course...

Hi Snappy. Please tell me you didn't eat at McDonalds or Olive Garden for lunch today.

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 4:49 PM

THL, I was in Brooklyn all day for a deposition and just came on home when it was done. Work is ok so far. Nothing spectacular except the paychecks :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at June 9, 2009 4:49 PM

Thanks for the love, Rob. Did you pick up any new clothes last weekend? My friend is coming to town this weekend and she's great with that stuff if you still need help.

Good point, THL. I doubt she took notes but the guy didn't stick around for too long (not on account of my gnocchi, of course).

Posted by: jessibaby at June 9, 2009 4:49 PM

Oh sorry chicken!! I didn't mean to yell at you. I meant M4L knows what he did. You did nothing!

He wanted you to back him up on some shady Chinese women obey their men kinda shizz..

I was saying don't do it!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 9, 2009 4:50 PM

Oh, and THL, I was dying during last week's RHWONJ when Dina said "If one more person tells me Danielle said something about me I'm gonna get my Brooklyn on"!!! I wanted to chat about it all last Wednesday but was too busy at work :(

Ah - now I see what you were getting at THL!

Funny thing is that, with the one couple, one child policy and the resultant glut of boys v girls, the girls have become a lot more picky and a lot less subservient (not an endorsement, just an observation).

I'm just a glutton for punishment so Mrs Chicken is a round-eyed white devil...

Not as good as yesterday - maybe because I watched the webcast from the orifice so had other distractions. Tommorrow should be quite entertaining though.

Posted by: more4less at June 9, 2009 4:56 PM

Hi Cobble! Oh, how I love Mr. Franklin!! LOL

THL, I was wondering if Dina was from or lived in Brooklyn for a while when she said that. I'll have to email you my comments on the show. I'm excited for tonight.

Cobble, I miss you all too! During the deposition today (which was long and painful) I thought about the 11217 line of wanting to scratch my eyes out with a walnut and had to stifle a laugh. Over the weekend I went shopping for a new suit. I found one I liked to try on and the saleslady goes "Wait...let's find another one...no sense in getting naked just for one time." I almost said to her "That's what she said!" I stopped myself just in time!
