After a few unused FGVOTD submissions, the chicken persisted and ended up hitting one out of the park (hitting it out of the henhouse?) with the one he sent me last night.
This is one of the funniest videos I have seen in a long time.
Thanks the chicken:

That was funny. At first I thought it was ripping on the karaoke videos but then realized that it was a spoof of the actual video. BTW, was Rob put in the penalty box?

The 'No Problem' Mindset: Guaranteed Destruction
by Gary North
Most people will not change. Too radical. Not going with the flow. Not betting against the herd.
The best examples in the 20th century were Jews in Germany in 1933. They stayed. This included Jewish bankers, all of whom could have left. They thought they could deal with Hitler. They did not read Mein Kampf. They did not take it seriously.
About 7% did leave early: 38,000 out of 523,000. More left after 1938. By 1941, about 160,000 remained in Germany. Then emigration was closed by the Nazis. Earlier, it was encouraged. The data are here.
At some price, almost all could have left. There were countries that would have let them in. They would have had to learn a new language. They would have arrived in poverty. But Jews had faced those options ever since the Assyrian captivity in the eighth century B.C. So what?
They all would not have escaped the Nazis. Some would have moved to other European countries that were overrun by Germany after 1939. But they could have tried to get away. They stayed. They refused to acknowledge the warning signals. "It can't be that bad." It got worse.
Jews had an answer for worrywarts. "No problem. We can handle it."
The Armenians went through the same thing. The Turkish massacres of 1895 were a foretaste. Most stayed behind. Then came the genocide of 1915.
NO PROBLEM!
Look back at the economy in October 2007. The Dow was at 14,000. The banks were booming. Real estate was down a little, but the experts gave no warning. They were wrong. All of them.
The U.S. government is running a $1.8 trillion deficit this year. Federal tax receipts are down 34%, which means that the deficit will go above $2 trillion. No one cares. No one says, "This is the end. The American economy will never again be what it was."
Think "2007." Would you have believed that Chrysler and GM were both headed for bankruptcy? In October 2007 GM shares were at $43. Now they are at $1. There was an industry called investment banking. Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Goldman Sachs were not part of the commercial banking system. To survive, a few made the transition in September 2008. Some did not make the cut.
Merrill Lynch is gone. Bank of America and Citigroup were bailed out by the government. They would have gone under. They sell for a fraction of what they did in 2007.
And what do most people say? "No problem."
There is no problem for which their answer is not "no problem."
Medicare will go bust. Social Security will go bust. "No problem."
The unemployment rate keeps rising. "No problem."
When people refuse to face reality, because reality is going to be more painful than anything they have experienced, they look for signs that the problems they cannot avoid without changing are really not that bad. They look for offsetting good news.
They think the status quo ante will return. The U.S. government is about to spend another $30 billion to buy a dead carcass of a company. It has already spent $20 billion. "No problem."
The government will let the company stiff bondholders for $27 billion in exchange for 10% of the company, 72% owned by the government and 17% by the United Auto Workers medical insurance fund. "No problem."
Bondholders were originally told that it would take a 90% vote to authorize this. The government has changed the rules. It will determine after the May 30 vote by bondholders what percentage must approve. "No problem.
The company will never return to what it was. "No problem." People will not buy as many cars as before from a company run by the government and the United Auto Workers. "No problem."
The Dow rose 100 points on the rumor that the largest bondholders will accept the deal. The deal is a disaster, but investors are in "No problem" mode. Somehow, the wipeout is less of a wipeout.
Who is going to buy a GM car instead of a Japanese car? Here is a company that is about to break its contracts with thousands of its dealers. "No problem." Yet buyers are expected to trust a GM warranty.
Oldsmobile is gone. "No problem." Pontiac is going. "No problem." Cadillac sells its cars with an ad of a flash model putting the pedal to the medal. Hot stuff! The company thinks people with money will not see through this ad. The Cadillac division has lost its way. "No problem."
The price/earnings ratio for the S&P 500 is over 120. Traditionally, 20 was regarded a sell. The investor pays $120 on the hope that the stock will retain a dollar of earnings, and pay investors some minimal percentage of these earnings as dividends. "No problem."
We are watching the investment world adopting a lemming mentality that has always produced losses. "This time it's different. No problem."
CONSUMER CONFIDENCE
The Conference Board announced that consumer confidence is up to 55. The 50 figure is neutral. Yet consumer confidence is a lagging indicator historically. When it rises, the stock market usually falls.
The indicator is a reflection on what the stock market has done recently. To use consumer confidence as a justification for buying stocks is nonsense. This is like saying, "I will buy stocks because the public is confident, which based on the fact that stocks have risen." If that strategy worked, stocks would never stop rising.
Even hard-money newsletter readers are beginning to doubt that the recent good news is in fact "less worse than expected" bad news. This is the stuff of dreams that do not come true.
Readers look at the reports, and the reports look awful: falling home prices, rising unemployment, an astronomical Federal deficit. But the media say we are close to a bottom – the bottom of a crash that none of them forecasted.
Readers think, "by the standards of late 2007, what

Good morning, What.
Yes, and the banks will raise record amounts of money this week to pay off the TARP. I'd say the response in the market is "No problem."
See my Forum post.
The S&P is +38% from the March bottom, the NASDAQ +43% and Emerging markets, the best examples of risk, even more so. ISM New Orders/Inventories has staged a dramatic reversal for 3 months now.
You continue to ignore the facts at your peril. Only a fool uses the rear view mirror to look forward.

See yesterday's thread about the middle-aged couple from NJ selling their house and moving to Williamsburg. Rob was spewing out random vitriol, and Mr. B. had had enough of it.
By the way, at the end of the thread, the columnist from the NYT's "The Hunt" column actually replied to my criticism. It does a conservative's heart good to see that you put the NYT on the defensive!

Keep your eyes on the 10 and 30 T-Bill auctions. Also use your Bloomberg Terminal to look at the MBS Market, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debt markets! There is a vertical line going up and the Banks are trying to rescind the rate locks!

benson, thanks for pointing us to that. Mr. B gave it to Rob pretty good at 11:51am. Ouch!
Posted by: Biff Champion at June 2, 2009 9:55 AM
Rates are still historically low, What. Everything is relative. You need to think bigger picture and incorporate ALL the facts, not your selective cut-and-paste.
Include all the recent capital rising in the market volume numbers and then see where the money is flowing. It's been flowing into Emerging Markets in huge numbers. It has been flowing into corporate debt.
You have too narrow a view of "the market."
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 2, 2009 9:56 AM
Biff and all;
I found it amusing that Mr. B. came back from his vacation with all guns blasting, taking Rob and The What down to the mat. I can just picture his thoughts. One week the guy is soaking up the beauty of Amalfi, the next week he has to deal with their day-to-day comments on this site. I can just picture Mr. B. saying to himself "I don't need this sh*t" and then going to the keyboard to deal with them.
Posted by: benson at June 2, 2009 10:02 AM
Poor Rob.
Perhaps Mr. B should have a comment moderator. If the comment isn't 'elevated' enough it doesn't get posted.

I have no idea who Gary North is but his assessment of the Jews in Germany is about as amateurish as a high school term paper. Good use of a bad analogy to make a point but as someone who has a little knowledge on the subject, let me say:
1. yes, many Jews could not believe that the country they had called home for hundreds of years, or friends, neighbors and even family would turn on them. Mnay fought for Germany in WW I
2. Millions tried to get out and were held hostage by the germans in order to get their families to pay ransom to get them out. This happened to my aunt and her family. Only one survived.
3. those who tried to escape were often caught and beaten. My cousin, for instance.
4. Pre War Germany had a population of Jews put at anywhere between 600-900,000. (NOT 160,000) The majority of Jews lived in Eastern Europe. Poland had over 3 million.
5. They were lied to in order to not overly frighten them- so that the Germans could raid their homes and possessions and lands at their leisure. Had Jews been able to leave en masse, Hitler would have lost all of their arts and treasure and money leave with them.
6. Supposedly not even the majority of the German people believed in the reality of the "Final Solution."
To use Jews as an example of ostriches is both ignorant of the whole story, human psychology and actual history. Not to mention- an insult. Pick a better analyst- one has actually has a few real facts under his belt.

MORE FACTS WHAT.......
Pending U.S. Home Resales Surge the Most Since 2001
June 2 (Bloomberg) -- The number of Americans signing
contracts to buy previously owned homes climbed 6.7 percent in April, the fourth increase in five months and almost 14 times as much as forecast, as lower prices attracted buyers.
The gain in the index of signed purchase agreements, or
pending home resales, was the biggest in more than seven years and followed a 3.2 percent increase in March, the National Association of Realtors said today in Washington. The April reading was up 3.2 percent from the same month a year earlier.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 2, 2009 10:30 AM
I did think it was good that Mr B started to engage people in the comment threads yesterday, though. It's good to see him explain his point of view more rather than always having to draw inferences, which can sometimes be wrong, from the initial posts.
It's just unfortunate that he seems to have also seen fit to put someone in the penalty box for very little (whereas Randolph, ghettoazz etc etc are still here by the way).

"What-Fu!" OMG! Gotta hand it to you, What, you are hilarious!
I have to take issue with Rob being 'slapped down' by Mr. B, while Rob can be a bit foolish at times, he's certainly no worse than some other commenters that Mr. B has chosen to ignore. And etson makes a good point in that those of us who have met Rob know that he is a good person. His comments don't always reflect what we know to be true about him. But we've been around the block on this subject, time to move on!
DH, I saw Conan - at least the first 45 minutes. He bombed, he was entirely too nervous - which is to be expected to some degree, but he's a professional, and he seemed out of his league/element. I found it hard to watch. All that bobbing and weaving in front of the camera must have made the camera man crazy. Find your mark and stay there! Until he sat down at the desk, and then he calmed down a bit. Unless you're Colin Ferguson, but that's whole 'nother kit and kaboodle.
Posted by: cobblehiller at June 2, 2009 10:55 AM
etson- ghettoazz has been doing very funny rewrites of the What's commments and randolph usually limits him/herself to one or two snide sentences. As much as I like rob, I find his constant discussion of bodily functions and his weird rants a bit much. I don't know why he got to Mr. B yesterday but my guess is it isn't any one thing but just the end of a long line on stuff. And I'm sure he'll be allowed back.
Meanwhile, the Mr. B bashing - all things considered- is out of whack. We made Mr. B? Yeah- that and 2 bucks (soon to go up to 2.25) will get you on the subway.

Also, it seems to me that Rob wasn't so much PUT into the penalty box as he picked up his toys, in some dismay and psychic pain/shame, and went home. Bxgrl;
Who is bashing Mr. B???????? Many folks (myself included)were somewhat sympathetic to him. As I said, I could empathize (somewhat) with a guy coming back from a week in Amalfi, and then having to deal with some of the posters.
Frankly, I do not take well to your reminders to us that we are on Mr. B's "dime", everytime we criticize the guy. If he didn't want our comments, he can pull the plug on it. If he wants us to write on every thread "Gosh darn, that was a brilliant insight, Mr. B.", he can moderate it so. Of course, as a publisher, he doesn't, because he knows that his hits would quickly diminish to zero if he were to do so.
So, once again, I say: he makes his dime from his patrons, and what he offers them on this site (including giving his posters the ability to provide negative feddback).

benson- sometimes you should be reminded. You took loads of potshots at him at every turn. I give credit where credit is due. Mr. B takes a lot of hits and in case you haven't noticed, Brownstoner is a heck of a lot better place to post than curbed. There's a reason for that. My comment was not aimed at you personally so why did you take it that way? You've been more than curmudgeonly lately (your comment on MM.s column today a case in point). But you still remain my favorite curmudgeon.
Posted by: bxgrl at June 2, 2009 11:25 AM
I actually agree with What and benson on "L'Affaire rob"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 2, 2009 11:28 AM
Well, anyone who thinks Jon is a f**king pussy doesn't have to post here. The fact he didn't take your post down says a lot more about him, than you.
As for the covert race/war crap- please. Can the drivel. You can only get so much mileage out of that tired old canard you put on Jon. If you are referring to myself or MM, we've taken on far more of the battle against racism than you ever did. You in fact love promoting it.
Posted by: bxgrl at June 2, 2009 11:29 AM
"Rob does not whine about thing he has no control over ('cept falling down)."
That was funny.
I'm guessing that by "racist comments", people are referring to what might be perceived as his anti-white posts yesterday, which he has posted before. Personally, none of his comments offended me whatsoever (especially since he is white himself and there is probably more truth to some of the things he says than we care to admit) and I hope he returns soon.

OK kids, I'm out to lunch. Please try to keep it civil, don't talk about me while I'm gone and don't engage in any further covert race/class warfare. Please do not slide down the slippery slope of discussing the socio-economic ramifications of Home Depot doors as others have in the Walkabout thread.

"Covert Race/Class warfare"
What, I said it yesterday and I'll say it again: Mr. B may or may not be guilty of race/class warfare, but he's certainly not covert!
I think anyone who gets all up in arms about Rob's comments needs to relax. People have different opinions and Rob makes as much fun of himself as he does of others. If you find someone's free speech unpleasant, counter them with more speech. You may not convince The What (or Rob), but there are any number of third party lurkers out there who will see your point. We shouldn't isolate ourselves from each other online, no matter how occasionally unpleasant we may be. Real life is different, of course.
And now back to grading.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at June 2, 2009 11:45 AM
rob doesn't need anyone's help. And you've slapped him down plenty in the past so all you're doing now is taking his side to score points against Jon. I hate hypocrisy and you're a classic example. I have no idea if rob even was banned- I don't supposed it ocurred to anyone maybe he is working or otherwise engaged? It's happened before- he just didn't post for a day or so. But by all means make this an anti-Jon rant. That's what you do best.

Belated response to what: Actually, if you read today's Times business page, you would realize that there have been concerns about a possible bankruptcy at GM for years and years. Lots of warnings. This isn't the shocker you think it is, only that the economy pushed GM and Chrysler a little harder and we now have a president who isn't willing to paper over GM's problems with a little more deregualtion here and there. As my mechanic told me a year ago in commenting on how my 10-year old car easily passed inspection, "If Chrysler and General Motors could make an engine like this, they wouldn't be in the sh*ithole they are in." (Of course, it sounds better in a smoke-inflected Argentine accent. Did my mechanic know something you didn't?) It is a selective misreading of history to think that these companies were fine until the recession hit. Remember, Mercedes tried to swallow Chrysler 10 years ago, only to cough it back up at the height of the boom. Chrysler was problematic in the good years.
P.S. Since I have lived in the Slope for 24 years, it is nice to know that, according to you, I am, by definition, not one of the retards.

I'm guessing that Rob probably took himself out of the game himself, after a good scolding from Jon. He's probably lurking today, and I hope he comes back, but I also hope he learns to edit himself. He is capable of nailing it right to the wall on some topics, and then mass spewage on others. I don't think he said anything racist, but that term gets tossed around way too much.
Speaking of which, I also don't think defending Jon is either sucking up or reminding everyone that we are playing with his ball and bat. I would have never interacted with, and then become friends with, such a great group of disparate folk without this blog. I've learned a lot about real estate, perhaps too much about what seems to be important to a lot of yuppie types here, and had my naievety dashed by some of the less than charitable remarks on a number of topics. I found my literary voice, as well. I also made some dollars selling at the Flea, so Jon Butler has been berry, berry good for me. (just dated myself, too) Nobody is perfect, nobody agrees with everyone at all times, and that is true in relationships, at work, with neighbors, or with friends.
Like Rob, I think the What nails it many times, and I have never denied that, or failed to give him his props when it happens. We vehemently disagree on many racial issues, which should go to show that black people certainly aren't a monolith, nor should we be. I took issue with Jon on some of the crime reporting, and on other class and race issues, and will continue when I see fit. I just think it's possible to disagree without being disagreeable.

Cobble, I think it was the careless white comments in combination with some of his "thoughts" on the thread about teenagers being shot by other teenagers in a school yard that together gave a rather racist (albeit likely unintentionally) read.
And Biff, UNCLE! I can no more keep up with all of these acronyms then I can read or keep up with the open thread (I always have to scroll and skip. Quel horreur!)

2. A Brooklyn born conservative pussy to the nth degree! When I was hunting for him attacked someone else for associating with me. When I was yelling "I'm over here", the pussy ran away!
See guys I'm right here!! I'm not Rob or 11217 Bitches, I'm The What Brownstoner's and Brooklyn's finest!!!!
But the sad thing is that pussy will not engage, just hides behind other people's jabs..
The What
Someday this war is gonna end...

A long time ago cobble gave me the STFU Award (yes, I remeber everything, I'm a Scorpio).
I now pass that award along to randi, who is far less interesting than ghettoazz and is nothing more than a pnkbtch

yes i have a purpose being here- it is entertaining for me and it seems to annoy all of you PLUSAs. No I don't live in a brownstone, but near many. I'm not a decorator, plumber or electrician. And I have been reading this site for a few years before I started posting.

Haha - well done DIBS. If I may toot my own recommendation:
"If you interested in a speculative bet, GM bonds are currently trading 8.5 cents on the dollar. I reckon they should be worth closer to 30 cents so there could be some big upside once the dust settles.
The main question is whether the US government will trample on bondholder rights. If they do (which I don't think they will but never say never) then it's game over for the dollar.
Posted by: the chicken at May 29, 2009 10:09 AM"
Bonds are at 13 cents now. 53% for holding over the weekend is not bad. Wish I had picked the right bond class though - some of them were 2.5 cents at the time, now 13 cents - 420%. sweeeeettttt!!!!

All this ad hominem carry-on is a drag. It's much more fun on the days when you hurl snide or snarky invective at each other or when there are legit differences of opinion expressed in high dudgeon. Mud-slinging is for dumb politicians.

Not for nothing Benson but what the heck does that have to do with anything?
I don't go to the Brownstoner shindigs but when you're acting like an ass I have no issues throwing down with you. Doesn't mean I need to see you in person and be in a situation where I feel I need to act phony and friendly with you so the sake of the others in attendance.
Point being, one has nothing to do with the other. Weak argument.

I like to think I control everyone. I get to call people out but I do not respond to intelligent and respectful requests for input. I am not capable of intelligent and respectful input.
My truth scares me and I rebel with insults. I refuse self-reflection and analysis.
I like you until I understand that you do not like me. I often need time to fully comprehend what is being written about me.
I have always been here. I will always be here. There is no need to look for me. I am immovable and unchangable.

THL,
It was hilarious. Still not sure if Eminem knew about it beforehand (or if so how much), but guess that's part of the fun.
Posted by: etson at June 2, 2009 5:03 PM
From what I read, Eminem was part of something and knew it but apparently didn't want any part of the wardrobe malfunction once Sacha's ass landed smack in his face.
Eminem is an ass anyway.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 2, 2009 5:04 PM
I think that he knew something was going to happen. Like maybe he was going to fly in and sit on his lap. I really don't think he expected it to be quite so 'intrusive'.

The thing is I would love to meet BHO, Cobblehiller Biff Champion and Team Bear but I know deep down some Asshole wants a "tittle shot" and I would give him one. I love to travel, read, go to the movies, take stolls along the beach. I love fine dining and home renovation.
I am looking for someone who will love me for the self-loathing, trash-talking lonely person I have become. I would love to find someone with whom I can live through the explosion of the Mutant Asset Bubble.
If interested, please insult me on Brownstoner and I will find you. Eventually.

a while back I wrote one of my usual amusing posts calling someone an alpha asshat or some such thing and then, poof! the what copies my line (sorta) and calls Dibs an alpha retard. You see, not to be overly pedantic, but what he really should have written was "delta retard", or possibly "delta-minus semi-moron". I just want to keep the "1984" references straight even for those of you who were not yet born in 1984.
fave orwell quote:
"In our age there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics.' All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia."
