Streetlevel: Loulou No More

loulou-closing-0609.jpg
As The Local reported, Dekalb mainstay eatery Loulou has thrown in the towel. With receipts down 50 percent from last year, the husband-and-wife owners decided the time had come for a change: They're moving to Vermont to open a new restaurant there. You can read the farewell letter posted in the window here. And what about the storefront at 222 Dekalb Avenue? We hear that a new lease has already been signed by a duo planning to open an Italian restaurant. We also hear that the monthly rent was $3,200, double what Loulou was paying. GMAP

"We hear that a new lease has already been signed by a duo planning to open an Italian restaurant."

Clearly Sebb doesn't know how to read very well. Not that his statement wasn't totally idiotic to begin with.

Really liked Lou Lou's. Too bad. I wish them luck in Vermont.

Good luck to the new venture as well...

Will miss it and am sorry we did not support it more. Last we were there -- April? -- they said that General Greene was killing their business.

They did a farewell party with drinks until 10PM on Friday. I'm a little surprised if the above is correct and they were only paying $1600 per month in rent. That seems rather low and manangeable. Anyway, I'm glad for them they're moving to VT, clean air, less congestion and stress and getting the kids out of NJ.

I loved Lou Lou and we went as often as we could afford (not that often, unfortunately). They were my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood and we will really miss them. They had such a nice, low-key ambiance and the food was always delicious and very fresh. Ici's nice, but I don't think they are nearly as good as Lou Lou.

Good luck William and Christine and we are sad to see you go.

Sebb what was the point of your dumb comment? Weird.

$1,600 per month rent for that space? That is insanely low - $3,200 is still pretty low. How long was this establishment open?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 5:05 PM

I agree DH.

$3200 is about half the price of a similar space on 5th Avenue and 1/3rd that of 7th Avenue.

I had no idea Dekalb rents were so "cheap."

Dirty hipster, they've been there at least 7 years I think...

just wondering about a lot of people who are finding it tough right now. That's it.
