Jonathan Adler Coming to Atlantic Avenue!

jonathan-adler-atlantic-avenue-0609.jpg
Potter-about-town Jonathan Adler (or, as his new signage puts it, "your 24-hour pot dealer") is bringing his trendy mix of lamps, plates and home furnishings to 378 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond Streets. The sign in the window confirms the teaser that's been on his website. Excited? GMAP

i'd be more excited if his sofa prices were realistic. i'm happy though that he is bringing business to brooklyn.

Posted by: winthropst at June 22, 2009 10:32 AM

Fantastic!!!

I've been a fan of his works for a long time. What a nice addition to the area.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 10:49 AM

I think this is cool. I really like some of his stuff, and you can actually get some GREAT bargains on the sale section on the website from time to time.

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 10:56 AM

Affordability - or lack thereof - is going to be key to survival of this place. His price are stratospheric for tchotchkes alone... Nice tchotchkes (actually, j'adorable), but still!

Why?

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:24 PM

OMG, this must mean Boerum Hill is gentrifying!

Jonathan Adler's prices are extremely reasonable for the quality.

Posted by: mopar at June 22, 2009 12:29 PM

I proudly announce my ignorance and distain.

Posted by: ghettoazzpnkbtch at June 22, 2009 12:32 PM

Love him! And while I agree his upholstered furniture is over-priced, his accessories deliver a lot of decorating punch and color for the money.

Posted by: grand army at June 22, 2009 12:40 PM

I like to spell "disdain" correctly.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:55 PM

Frankly, I don't find the accessories from them to be that exciting for the money, although, admittedly, I've bought some items for gifts.

I keep passing the JA store in the Village and wondering when they're going to have a big "75% And MORE Off!!!" sign in the window but I guess they're somehow managing to chug along...so many stores have closed or consolidated with other locations around town it's kind of hair-raising! And in some places the numbers of restaurants that have closed is also surprising.

Posted by: BrooklynGreene at June 22, 2009 1:01 PM

I like to make fun of other people's spelling instead of changing my limited view of the world. I need to get out more, which is surprising since I claim to be a reporter.

Posted by: ghettoazzpnkbtch at June 22, 2009 1:25 PM

"I like to make fun of other people's spelling instead of changing my limited view of the world."

Rather, I prefer to point out POOR spelling, particularly when used in a self-righteous post that seeks to ridicule someone for expressing an opinion. I've literally visited dozens of countries and personally interviewed thousands of people. I'm quite secure in my view of the world. Certainly secure enough not to seek gratification through childish posts that attempt to castigate someone whose views differ from my own.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 1:41 PM

BrooklynGreene:

I think stores like this do a huge amount of business online, which allows them to set up stores in places they find attractive and "hip." Brooklyn has become a distinct brand, which many retailers find attractive these days. I'm sure they do the bulk of their business through the website.

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 1:45 PM

I traveled the world and yet I am still dumb enough to sleep with a co-worker when I was married and post it here on Brownstoner. Then I have the nerve to tell others not to post about their personal lives.

And when someone calls me on my limited world view, I get irritated. It must be because they hit a nerve. If they hadn't, I don't think I would have spent any time responding.

Ooops. I showed my hand.

Perhaps I better get back to the pennysaver and keep my childish views to myself.

I hope no one responds with a haiku. I am not smart enough to deal with one of those.

Posted by: ghettoazzpnkbtch at June 22, 2009 1:46 PM

"I get irritated."

"It must be because they hit a nerve."

"Ooops. I showed my hand."

Hmmm.... a hypocrite AND a poor speller!

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 1:56 PM

I have no real come back to the truth, so I am going to concentrate on spelling.

I hate Jonathan
He is too classy for me

$5,000 dollars for a sofa? I'm by no means an interior design buff but that seems a little bit steep - if I'm wrong please let me know.

Isn't there a West Elm in Dumbo? I've always liked their stuff.

That being said - does anyone know a place in Brooklyn where I could get a good sofa for < $1,000?? My JC Penny $300 special has seen better days.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 2:30 PM

DH, IKEA! or I really like www.laflat.com

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 22, 2009 2:51 PM

I am a fan of Crate & Barrel. Can get something good there for probably a little over $1000.

Posted by: etson at June 22, 2009 2:55 PM

ghetto---usually appreciate your snarky, meta critiques but I do have to say that I think ENY is a pretty good sport on here for the most part.

Posted by: wasder at June 22, 2009 3:18 PM

Thank you, Wasder! I try to be. But hey, that's life in the big city. I'll have to somehow manage to overcome my profound disappointment at being ridiculed by a stalker who doesn't know me but seems to have been personally insulted by something I posted (I guess).

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 3:31 PM

ghettoazzpnkbtch
is just DIBS thinly disguised
so goes my theory

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 22, 2009 3:55 PM

$5,000 for a sofa now? The upholstered furniture used to be about the same price as Pottery Barn and the quality was far superior. I guess they are now doing custom, hand-tied, etc. Anyway, expensive furniture lasts and lasts. I buy it used. Jonathan Adler is fun. I admire his needlepoint pillows.

Posted by: mopar at June 22, 2009 4:03 PM

Really!? I think Ghetto is Randolph.

Posted by: mopar at June 22, 2009 4:04 PM

Snark,
Pretty sure that is not the case, unless DIBS is even craftier than I thought :). Ghettoazz appears to have posted a couple of times last Weds night, while DIBS was at the get together at Rope.

Posted by: etson at June 22, 2009 4:06 PM

"ghettoazzpnkbtch is just DIBS thinly disguised"

It's not really important. Oh, and while the story I told about sleeping with a co-worker is true, it happened in 1990 during my first marriage. While that would certainly qualify as "personal information," since no one here actually knows me, it's pretty much innocuous. The posters I referred to put pictures of themselves and their friends on this blog. Not the same thing.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 4:18 PM

There is one couch that's $5000 on the website, and the rest are more like $2500-3500 from what I can tell.

That's not obscene for a nice couch of high quality, like many of Adler's stuff is. The pillows are especially great.

DH - what about CB2?

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 4:47 PM

agree with 11217 on CB2. Love their stuff.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 22, 2009 4:50 PM

True - I didn't realize that every sofa is available in different fabrics - so I'm sure 5,000 is higher end leather or something. Really nice looking stuff though.

For a website that focuses mostly on the aesthetics of the exteriors of homes - sometimes how the interior is decorated makes all the difference.

CB2 looks good - their track sofa is pretty much what I'm looking for and is $999. thx!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 4:58 PM

> CB2. Love their stuff.

I like the look of a lot of CB2 stuff, but be sure to check it out in person. Much of the construction quality seems to be a bit shoddy.

> Ghettoazz appears to have posted a couple of times last

Ahhh, well, so much for that grand theory.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 22, 2009 5:09 PM

I guess if I can't take the heat - or have nothing to say about a particular posting by Mr. B - I should keep my fingers off the keyboard. I wonder if I could actually learn something instead of talking about myself all day long.

(Not DIBS, snark. Wasder, if everyone could be as nice as you on this site, I would have nothing to say. Word to the wise.)

Posted by: ghettoazzpnkbtch at June 22, 2009 5:16 PM

DH - CB2 is poorly constructed. it may look ok in their catalog photos but the stuff is...

best bet is to go to craigslist and do a search for "DWR sofa" within your price range and you'll find choices in brooklyn and manhattan from lots of brands - "DWR" is just an easier way to do a search for modern sofas. and also look for floor sample sales at DWR and other stores like that. it's a step above CB2 in terms of design and construction and still within your budget if you get a gently used sofa.

Posted by: winthropst at June 22, 2009 5:19 PM

"Wasder, if everyone could be as nice as you on this site, I would have nothing to say. Word to the wise."

True enough I suppose. Just didn't get why ENY was your target this time.

Posted by: wasder at June 22, 2009 5:22 PM

Yeah, I've never actually owned anything from CB2 (I get everything I own vintage or from flea markets if at all possible) but I've just heard they have nice stuff. Don't know anything about the quality though...

DWR is certainly a major step up in both quality and price.

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 5:25 PM

I have a JA loveseat. It seemed a lot cooler inside the store ;(

Posted by: jessibaby at June 22, 2009 5:25 PM

Cool - thanks guys will have to check it out.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 5:32 PM

DH - just did a quick check on CL. also try a search for "west elm sofa"
if you want to be a true hipster you should check out the furniture at:

: )

Posted by: winthropst at June 22, 2009 5:33 PM

If you like older stuff, you gotta check out RePop on Washington between Park and Flushing.

They have AMAZING stuff! Love those guys.

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 5:38 PM

Haha thanks winthropst/11217 ;)

Does the current bedbug epidemic make anyone weary of buying second hand furniture?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 5:50 PM

I wouldn't take anything off the street, but I feel relatively ok with buying from a reputable vintage dealer.

Posted by: 11217 at June 22, 2009 5:55 PM

i second 11217 on that.

on CL i would use common sense and ask the sellers to be frank.

Posted by: winthropst at June 22, 2009 6:04 PM

Check out Room and Board for "classic modern" sofas at reasonable prices. Very well made stuff.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 22, 2009 6:20 PM

I hate whomever posted the repop site- what great stuff. rats!

Posted by: bxgrl at June 22, 2009 6:42 PM

Gift of a haiku
Reducing to the essence
What you "have" to say

CB2 is kind of junky and IKEA can be very junky.
DWR is over-rated although their very funny oversized desk lamp that is huge and actually a floor lamp is very funny. They have one in the SoHo shop but I haven't seen it in the catalog. Has anyone spotted it? It's bright orange and very funny. We don't need it, but it's funny.

Jessi, that's too bad! Maybe it needs some crazy needlepoint pillows or something. :)
