It's Hard to Beat the Tent Rent

Here's something we may start to see more of: Brokelyn reports that three enterprising recent college grads have avoided moving in with mom and dad by pitching a tent in the backyard of a friend's Bushwick rental. The price? $100 a month per tent. The experience is not for the faint of heart, given that there are already six people crammed into the two-bedroom duplex. In all, that makes for nine people sharing one shower. All of a sudden, crashing on the 'rents couch doesn't sound too bad.

If they're paying the friend that money it's illegal. A tenant cannot make money off of a rental- that's the landlord's property. Nor can a landlord rent out his backyard as a residence. No matter how you slice it, it's very illegal.

And the place is packed already. I have a feeling the joyride is over though now that it's news. But I agree with gemini10 and biff.- if they weren't college students the wrath of the neighborhood would be on them.

This shit really pisses me off. This is an extreme, but in general, young people in NYC live in freakin horrible conditions. Whether it is the females in the upper east side doorman building with 3 sharing a 1 bedroom, the east village poseurs living in 6x7 rooms with no closets or whatever the hell these bushwick kids are - it's absolutely amazing what people will subject themselves to.

I lived in some shitty apts during college so I could have my freedom, but once i graduated that was no longer acceptable to me.

You know in today's third world cell-phones and MP3's are becoming increasingly more common, even in the slums. I'm finding it hard to believe that any of you people live in NYC. Wow! This used to be a place where anything could fly. Now I see where all the snobs live... These dudes are artists and they're doing their best to make it. Most of the musicians, painters, poets, etc. that you all hail from past years lived in similar conditions or worse. It's much better than going home to mommy and daddy or having mommy or daddy paying their rent. At least they're doing the best they can with what they have. And oh well that it's illegal... Dum vivimus, vivamus...

Oh my God, I am having a flashback to my tenant from hell. She was my own living nightmare when I first bought my house. She used every piece of her duplex apartment including backyard and cellar to "sublet". She had subtenants living by the boiler in the basement and people sleeping in the hammock in the backyard and she slept on a bed under a tarp in the backyard. She advertised in Italian newspapers for students, adventurers and along the way she made friends with the people in the neighborhood who were between apartments. She is gone now, thanks to tenant landlord court. Bye.

What they're doing is pretty cool. I think more punk rock than hipster. But it'll get old quickly, especially once the heat, humidity and insects kick in. They might just be looking for some sympathy from the ladies. Let the cougars lose on 'em and they'll be fine. It won't be long before they're back on the couch surfing circuit.
