Ferry Service to Governor's Island Starts This Weekend!

Via Lost City comes a reminder that tomorrow marks the inaugural run of the new ferry service from Brooklyn to Governor's Island. On Saturday, the ferry will leave Fulton Ferry Landing at 11:15 a.m. and every hour thereafter until 4:15 p.m.; there's no Brooklyn service on Sunday and you'll need to consult the ferry schedule to find out when it will run again. I've heard a trip to Governor's Island is a really fun place to go with the kids. Having taken them on the Staten Island Ferry just for something to do a couple of weekends ago, I'm pumped at the thought of being able to walk to this ferry and go somewhere interesting and new with the family for a few hours!

According to the Governors Island website, this Saturday's schedule from Brooklyn is on the hour and every 20 minutes thereafter, while the return is on the half hour and every 20 minutes thereafter. http://www.govisland.com/Visit_the_Island/directions.asp

Joe - I think you can
we take the "Water Taxi" that runs like every 20 mins from Fairway in Red Hook right to Gov Island - I think it's $5 per person but it was a fun 4 min trip!

Yes, you can bring bikes. And there are 5 miles of bike paths on the island. Have fun!

This is from a press release I received recently:

Every Friday between June 5 and October 9, visitors can borrow a bike for free, for up to one hour. More than 200 bikes will be available for the program this year. Free Bike Fridays is sponsored by Bike and Roll

Governor's Island is awesome! You can bike ride, take tours of many of the old buildings, see art shows, etc. Go next weekend. My friend is part of their art show/festival running from 6/12-6/14! I want lots of people to see her paintings.

Can one enjoy a cappucino (or, more civilized-ly, a drink) there or is this the typical American Puritanical Park routine?
