Conservative Talk Show Host Beholds Williamsburg

A conservative radio talk show host called Jay Mundy describes his first visit to Williamsburg earlier this week. It's kinda hilarious until you realize that people this close-minded actually exist. Some out-takes:

williamsburg-bathroom-0609.jpgIt is a place that is now the official hipster neighborhood of the United States of America...I never thought that could exist here...I couldn't believe it. It is so left wing, how do I even describe it...If you could see what this place looks like...Just think of the most left-wing hippie, lunatic, nutcase; get that in your head and multiply it by thousands. It is extremely scary...Tattoos and people who are high on drugs all day and they are wearing weird clothes, like something you can't imagine, like a Hollywood picture, but here it was in the real world. Someone I was with said it's like all the misfits in this country went to this neighborhood. There's graffiti everywhere cuz they think graffiti is art...They are extreme leftists. I've never seen so many sick weirdos gathered in one place. They're all doing drugs all day. They have their hair died and tattoos so they can't have a job so they're all living on public assistance...They love Obama and the leftists and hate police power. They're carefree people. If I lived there a day, I tell you I would be in jail for murder...They don't believe in toilet paper there because it hurts the environment...I think even some left-of-center Democrats would be grossed out.

Someone better explain to this guy the difference between a hipster and a hippie. You can check Part 1 and Part 2 of the interview on YouTube.

Sounds like talk radio

I like to sniff hipster ass. I am obsessed with other people's asses. I am a closet case.

Posted by: ghettoazzpnkbtch at June 17, 2009 9:12 AM

Hey, What...

What kind of "spot-on" observations do you think a clown like Jay Mundy would make on the Fulton Mall or in Brownsville? I have a feeling you wouldn't be as forgiving to his broad generalizations at that point.

Posted by: Beau Guest at June 17, 2009 9:13 AM

the hipsters will be THRILLED with this review.

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at June 17, 2009 9:18 AM

I've never been to Williamsburg. I doubt I'll ever go. Talk radio is for nutjobs.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 9:19 AM

According to the links he appears to be in his early 20's and grew up in Mill Basin, so doubt it was really his first experience of Williamsburg.
Never heard of him before. Don't think he is very representative of conservatives. Just think he's an amateur trying to get noticed by saying daft things.

Posted by: etson at June 17, 2009 9:20 AM

What an idiot. Stupid on so many levels, it's not even worth going there.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at June 17, 2009 9:21 AM

Jay Mundy is not anywhere close to being a serious conservative talk radio host - anyone ever heard of him? I thought not. I listen to radio 5+ hours a day and I sure haven't.

If it were Mark Levin or Mike Church it would be one thing. But it's not.

Posted by: infinitejester at June 17, 2009 9:23 AM

On behalf of Williamsburg - Fuck you Jay Mundy

Who is Jay Mundy?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 9:23 AM

"What kind of "spot-on" observations do you think a clown like Jay Mundy would make on the Fulton Mall or in Brownsville?"

George Carlin once said "There is some truth about stereotypes"

Tell me what contribution have Hipster made to Brooklyn???

Jacking up rents! Jacking off in a coffee shops all day with no job! Disgusting Hygiene (Hey wash your fucking asses)! Living off Trust Funds. Attention seeking Assheads! Faux- Culture Fucktards! Shall I go on???!!!

Look at the Hipsters living in someone's backyard are you fucking kidding me????!!! Black people on Welfare don't live like that!

Oh BTW Brownstoner has said more disparaging remarks about " Fulton Mall or in Brownsville" than Jay Mundy.

The What (Are you going to defend Hipsters??)

OH NO...TATTOOS AND WEIRD CLOTHES!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!

Jay Mundy sounds like the narrator from Reefer Madness, the 1936 film that claimed marijuana would lead to murders, suicides, rapes and general madness.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 9:28 AM

Um...what kind of jobless, public-assistance-grabbing hipster can afford rent in Williamsburg? Wha??

Posted by: spacegirl at June 17, 2009 9:28 AM

LOL Hipsters living on public assistance. If public he means mom and dad then yes.
This dude needs to get out more.

And BTW - no the What is angry at hygiene- precious! You are only about class wars (though you really don't care about the "lower class").

Posted by: crimsonson at June 17, 2009 9:42 AM

Thank God for the Hipsters, What.

Just think, in 25 years when they are making movies that are set way back in the "Great Recession", they will have to do their location shots in Brooklyn. The hipsters, for good or ill are what "movie people" will remember about this time. Like the punks on St. Marks or the club kids at Studio 54 in the 70's and 80's. Maybe they'll even give one of these films the title "Asshats" in your honor. Williamsburg in the 00's and Hipsters in general will be a productive vein of humor and nostalgia for years to come. For that, we owe them our gratitude. But, since we are all fellow residents of Brooklyn, we should band together to give a guy like Jay Mundy a collective kick in the ass. In fact, a guy like Mundy is way more likely to be a future 'asshat' pushing a stroller around Ft. Greene than any would-be artist in skinny jeans and a funny hat living with five roommates in Williamsburg.

OH NO ASSFUCK!!! Don't go there! Let me tell you something you 27 year old jerk off! In the 70's and 80's people made contributions not sucking and leeching the lifeblood out of a neighborhood! Look at the old clips from CBGB and get back to me. That was art and people had talent not this Faux-Artistic shit you see. Hipsters live like fucking animals ANIMALS in Williamsburg. They don't work, sleep all day, don't wash their asses, rip off the culture of the Ghetto and jack up rents because the Fucktard from OHIO has arrived.

all this will do is increase real estate values in Billyburg - all PR is good PR - keep it coming, especially from the "scared of their own shadow" right's of this country - believe me, the tourists will come to Brooklyn rather than the sterile Times Square...

Wait - you mean that venue in Manhattan that hasn't been significant since the 70s - and is now a John Varvatos boutique?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 10:00 AM

yeah, no one in the ghetto sits around all day doing nothing and leeching off society, mr. what. did you ever think that many of the young people in williamsburg support themselves with jobs that take place at night, which means they have free time during the day? so much hate.

FYI - the original punksters where considered hacks, you dumb ass. 3 chord progression being played loudly. Get a clue.

You don't even know what you are talking about. It was not until very late 70s and early 80s until punk was considered legit art.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at June 17, 2009 10:12 AM

It's just that it's in your neighborhood now, What. But gentrification and flux has been going on as long as NYC has been going on. New groups colonize a neighborhood and other groups move on. Too bad. And I wasn't making a value judgement on the worth of the so-called hipster versus the youthful archetypes of days gone by, just an observation that the hipster is very much tied to what passes for a "scene" these days. BTW, I was one those scenesters from the past--I was actually in CBGB's and the Peppermint Lounge when they mattered. My glory days started in the golden age of Danceteria and ended the day I left my last rave saying "God, I'm too old for this". I went home, hung up my Fozzie Bear backpack forever and joined the great asshat migration. All I'm saying is, that for those kids who are part of the Williamsburg scene now, all that is going on there DOES matter. That is what they will remember fondly in another couple decades and they will rail on blogs and in community board meetings against the destruction of Williamsburg as it was when they were there. I will tell you, no one in the 70s or 80s thought they were doing anything particularly important. They were just going out and getting trashed and having fun--same as kids today.

Posted by: Beau Guest at June 17, 2009 10:16 AM

"Wait - you mean that venue in Manhattan that hasn't been significant since the 70s "

Some of the greatest rock bands came from there! They made a contribution to society unlike the Assfucks in "Billyburg".

"FYI - the original punksters where considered hacks, you dumb ass. 3 chord progression being played loudly. Get a clue."

And now we have Fag Synth Pop! I guess tight jeans and nipple rings have improved Chord Progression.

"You don't even know what you are talking about. It was not until very late 70s and early 80s until punk was considered legit art."

You was still sperm during those days! Get a clue Jaggoff!

"And pretty sure they had a reputation of bad hygiene - including tatoos and lack of ass washing."

Oh no Hipsters made Hygiene Counter Revolutionary! Grab a bar of soap and have a shower!

"mr. what. did you ever think that many of the young people in williamsburg support themselves with jobs that take place at night, which means they have free time during the day?"

Come on, come on! You don't believe that!!!!

certainly this radio guy is saying outrageous things to get noticed. Maybe that is why the What empathizes so much with him.
Yet I have read enough of the hipster criticism, park slope mom bashing, project tenant snickering, along with lots of other silly stereotypes and overgeneralizations by many many many readers here. Don't understand all the negativity.

How about some bashing of all of us -brownstoner commenters - who have nothing better or productive do to then banter all day on the blog (when most of us are at work anyway).

I've always felt the What was a Googling imposter. Whenever he talks about any old school New York thing, he parrots the party line about it. "CBGB - they had legendary bands there." Oh, that seals it, he must have been a total insider.

Posted by: infinitejester at June 17, 2009 10:37 AM

Whatever, What. You sound like the happy idiots that used to rail against gentrification in the East Village. If you weren't an anarchist or squatter, you were somehow destroying the neighborhood. Like it was somehow "preserving" the neighborhood to smoke crack and live under tarps and packing crates in the park. I dutifully purchased purchased my clothes at Unique and Canal Jeans and was barely scraping by, but I was supposed to give the beggar punks on St. Marks money? Right. I don't remember those "artists" having steady jobs beyond begging and calling their parents back in Ohio to wire them some more cash. I'm pretty sure their Trash and Vaudeville bondage wear and dye jobs cost way more than my monthly rent. AI suggest to you that there is nothing different between then and now.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 17, 2009 11:09 AM

Hate to break the news to Jay Mundy and The What, but Billyburg hipsters are NOT left wing - they are not driven by politics, concerned about government, or trying to improve the lives of the poor by any stretch of the imagination.

They are libertarian hipsters who want no part of social responsibility - they want to be able to do the drugs they want without gov't interference, work or not work, live more or less peacefully without anyone telling them what to do and without telling anyone what to do.

I'm not a hipster but I admire the way they have created a haven for like minded people with their own aesthetic. lots will be in for a rude awakening as their trust/parental/freelance funding dries up, but whether or not you like it they have their own culture, which is more than I can say for the ass-hats who dominate wall street or the corporate hos of the west village and meatpacking, etc...

in anticipation of nasty comments from The What, I wash my ass, I work, I live in a humdrum working class neighborhood, wasn't here in the 70's and don't have an std.

I remember when the same things were said about Wash Sq in the late 50s-early 60s. Kids in expensive suede jackets hitting you up for a dime, feet unwashed, teeth green (ugh!). I never got close enough to judge how much they bathed but the rants from the 35+ group were identical to those on today's thread.

It amazes me that people think hipsters are ONLY in williamsburg/bushwick.

I was at a friends place in Bed Stuy - Bedford and Gates and there were ALOT more hipsters walking around there then you would see at any given time on Lorimer, Leonard, Manhattan or Graham Aves (West of Union Ave is a diff story)

Yes Dave, you live amongst hipsters!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:24 AM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:30 AM

Did anyone else see the Bed Stuy gay bashing story from the Thursday Blogwrap thread....

"Recently some white newcomers to our block, were gay bashed in front of their brownstone at 9:30 at night. Not surprisingly, they're moving out. I find this even more disturbing than the increase in local muggings that have occurred over the last year or so. Sure, these guys dressed flamboyantly - Big Joe noticed one of them strolling down the street in a pair of hot pink short shorts the other day. But just like a woman who dresses provocatively is not asking to be raped, neither is a lesbian, gay or transgender person asking to get beat up for dressing up. Interestingly, if you look at Bed-Stuy apartment shares on Craigslist, you'll discover that at least half the people who've recently moved to the neighbourhood are gay"

I believe the blogger and Big Joe live somewhere close to the Marcy Station of the J/M line from their other posts...far north end of bed Stuy. Anyone else know any details about this?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 11:37 AM

"Did anyone else see the Bed Stuy gay bashing story from the Thursday Blogwrap thread...."

Yeah - i did Dave. Was going to ask you your thoughts/experiences regarding this.

J/M at Marcy Ave is solidly southside williamsburg.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 11:45 AM

I read that yesterday too. There will always be idiots and morons who can't be trusted to act like human beings when faced with people who don't live their lifestyle. I don't think this incident is the norm, and I would hope the community speaks out against it. We have enough problems without caring if men wear hot pink shorts or young people in billyburg have tatoos.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 11:53 AM

Yes, but they live somewhere south of that station, which is solidly Bed Stuy. Hence the name, bed Stuy banana for the blog.

I searched other Brooklyn blogs and saw no sign of this.

Question: Why do hipsters buy those ridiculously small 8 oz. (?) bottles of beer?????

I see Philly hipsters (you think the Williamsburg ones are lame, hahahaha) drink these at Dirty Franks.

I can only assume that the bar sells them because they make more money by ripping off these hipsters.

And that, as Martha Stewart says, Is A Good Thing.

But before I climb down from my soapbox I want to mention again- this is not the norm in Black neighborhoods. And I will confess to being grossly embarrassed by the likes of Jay Mundy and his ilk- which is why I was surprised to see you so enthused about his comments on Williamsburg. Perhaps the What will be so good as to answer how he's such an expert on hipster anal hygiene to begin with. I think that's the most troubling thing about this whole thread.

Posted by: Beau Guest at June 17, 2009 1:41 PM

i would never wear hot pink shorts. yapping on my cell phone, screetching how cool i am cuz of where i live.. in the ghetto. jeez. are people THAT dumb? im not blaming the victim .. sort of.. this thread was painful to read. u do realize that 99 percent of the people talked about in this thread are posers right?

i look at 99 percent of the hipsters to be the whitebread version of 99 percent of the wannabe thugs and gang bangers out there. neither group offers anything of importance. it's time to move on to space suits and vellum toilet paper.

What,
There's hardly ever a post about any person of any color on this blog. In case you haven't noticed, the posts are about buildings, restaurants, stores, etc...Of course, you might consider today's mural post positive, but, as we recall, you don't like street murals...

Posted by: brownstoner at June 17, 2009 1:46 PM

What- get a grip. take your meds.FYI- I was being sarcastic about what a positive African American role model you are. Let's see- foaming at the mouth, poor command of english ( not to mention poor command of Ebonics as well), faux self-righteous rages over the "covert" race war- the only point that's moot is that you're an embarrassment to your people and a foul-mouthed, unintelligble, cyber-joke.

You spend so much time ranting and raving- not because you really give a flying you-know-what about African-Americans, but because you believe your own hype. It's all about you- you think you're some kind of intellectual leader on brownstoner, and heaven forgive them, there are those who buy your crap and think you're cute. You really want to see a fucking hypocrite- take a good long look in your mirror.

"You spend so much time ranting and raving- not because you really give a flying you-know-what about African-Americans, but because you believe your own hype. "

Answer the fucking question!!!!

"Hey Bxgrl since you are on your soap box did you fine 10 positive stories about African Americans on Brownstoner????"

Again, What- you are your own best advertisement for "positive" role models. (disclaimer-that was sarcasm, What). You continue to dominate the cyber covert race/class warfare by shrieking and whining while doing your best to promote it. You aren't even consistent - except in your use of obscenity and invective. When you can behave like a grown up and actually carry on a real conversation I'll be more than happy to answer your question. Until then, you can choke on your skittles for all I care. Have a nice day (as if that's possible for you).

...and you must not have liked the posts we've done about the Tattoo parlor, Eddie, Michael Allen or the new cleaners on Fulton and Clinton. Maybe you need to take a break from commenting and catch up on your blog reading!

Posted by: brownstoner at June 17, 2009 2:33 PM

" the Tattoo parlor"

You're joking right?!

"Michael Allen"

+1

"new cleaners on Fulton and Clinton"

I guess you're not joking.

Brownstoner do you know what African-Americans look like??????? You know "Black people"! I see the problem you don't know any Black people. If that's the case I'm sorry for ramming it your ass!

"You continue to dominate the cyber covert race/class warfare by shrieking and whining while doing your best to promote it. "

Answer the question!!!!!

Brownstoner here is a classic example of Covert Race/Class Warfare!

http://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2009/06/tuesday_links_159.php

A picture is worth a thousand words Brownstoner and I know why you went with this picture. It shows a Black Woman with her hair wrapped up in front of a dilapidated building, most likely in Bed Stuy! Now Brownstoner I fucking know there are better pictures to choose from!

Jon let me tell you this- A year ago you would've ignored me but, since the collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble you realized its falling apart. Thanks Jon for the confirmation.

Joe Mundy should be quiet about everyone being on drugs, when that gets out everyone will want to live in Williamsburg, and the rents will be even higher.

Posted by: mopar at June 17, 2009 2:55 PM

Jay Mundy, I mean.

Posted by: mopar at June 17, 2009 2:55 PM

So we're only allowed to run What-approved pretty pictures of Bed Stuy now, What? You are ridiculous.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 3:03 PM

What- "answering" you is an exercise in futility. YOu neither acknowledge or accept anything other than what's running the little hamster in the wheels of your mind.

When you give me an example of anything positive you have done for your own race, I'll answer your question. In fact- just tell me anything positive you have done in life, even if it was picking up a piece of paper on the street, or admiring a blue sky. Something...anything.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 3:09 PM

Is it okay to run photos of dilapidated buildings in, say, Williamsburg? Just want to get your permission first...

Posted by: brownstoner at June 17, 2009 3:12 PM

jon- and don't forget to run your text by him also. we wouldn't want him upset :-)

"So we're only allowed to run What-approved pretty pictures of Bed Stuy now, What? You are ridiculous."

Yeah why not! Start respecting your neighbors Jon!!! The fucking retards don't live in a vacuum!

"BTW, nice picture"

It was sarcasm Dave!

Posted by: Return of The What at June 17, 2009 3:16 PM

I might also point out that Brownstoner prints HUNDREDS of pretty pictures of Bed Stuy (and Crown Heights) every week when he runs my column. Most of my photos are of those neighborhoods, and if the comments like "beautiful", "wow", or "thanks for showcasing my neighborhood" mean anything, then I think he's more than providing a positive spin on Bed Stuy, which is certainly more positive than anything the What has ever done for these neighborhoods. Screaming things like you deserve what you get when you come to (name that black neighborhood) don't count.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at June 17, 2009 3:16 PM

I've seen many delightfully beautiful photos of Bed Stuy posted on this blog over the years, but of course The What is unable to see those. Maybe those were posted on days he was blocked.

Posted by: 11217 at June 17, 2009 3:17 PM

"Is it okay to run photos of dilapidated buildings in, say, Williamsburg? Just want to get your permission first..."

Jon don't be stupid! You know what I mean OK! And knock off the " who me" shit, is very disingenuous! You sound like Donald Rumsfield now!

Posted by: Return of The What at June 17, 2009 3:20 PM

HEY WHAT...you were ranting about rising rates last week....

Treasuries Stage Longest Rally Since January After CPI Report

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- Treasuries rose for a fifth day, the longest rally in five months, after a government report showed consumer prices rose less than forecast in May, easing concern inflation will accelerate as the economy strengthens.
Longer-maturity debt, more sensitive to inflation
expectations, rallied, with the yield on the 30-year bond
dropping to the lowest in over two weeks. Mortgage bond yields fell for a fifth day. Federal Reserve officials are considering whether to use next week’s policy statement to damp speculation they will raise interest rates this year, signaling to investors they have a handle on any rise in consumer prices.

Being too early is the same as being wrong, What.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 3:23 PM

Ok. I've seen Jon. Fits the description of "man".

You? Not so sure. You looked like Cousin It in New York Magazine.

As 11217 points out, there've been probably hundreds of photos showing the beautiful side of Bed Stuy over the years. Do you want to pretend that there is not poverty and decomposing housing stock in BS? La la land...

Ok I'm done Jon you're full of shit! But before I go dig this...

Someday this war's gonna end. That'd be just fine with the boys on the boat. They weren't looking for anything more than a way home. Trouble is, I'd been back there, and I knew that it just didn't exist anymore.

If anything Williamsburg doesn't get a fair shake when it comes to nice pictures. Sure the majority of stuff there is crappy new construction but there is some nice architecture/blocks.

Lots of great pics of Bed-Stuy (and CH) are showcased here and are frequently my wallpaper on my work computer.

I remember a picture of Bainbridge and Stuyvesant about a month ago that was awesome

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 17, 2009 4:05 PM

shame you think so, ENY.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 4:21 PM

"shame you think so, ENY."

I don't at all mean he's correct in his assessment of Wiliamsburg - his comments are among the dumbest I've ever heard and he is clearly an uninformed moron. I mean that Mr. B's posting of Jay Mundy's stupid rant provoked a full-scale blog race battle here. In that sense, Jay Mundy wins.

Posted by: East New York at June 17, 2009 4:39 PM

Any publicity is good publicity.

Remember how the Catholic Church went after that "cow dung Madonna" at the Brooklyn Museum (?) many years ago. LOL

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 17, 2009 4:45 PM

ENY- I have to agree with you on that. (Gosh- that was so painful!) :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 4:47 PM

Enlighten me, what exactly will happen in five months?

Posted by: infinitejester at June 17, 2009 4:50 PM

the earth will be rent asunder, the oceans will overflow the land, we will have 7 plagues and the What will still be complaining that he didn't get enough credit from Jon for being right about the MREB. Oh- and the entire economy will collapse taking civilization with it. SO says our resident prophet and "sage."

Posted by: bxgrl at June 17, 2009 4:59 PM

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 17, 2009 6:02 PM

I hope he profiles Bed-Stuy next and all its "many Obama-skinned people" in their "weird clothes and baggy bed shirts". Or Park Slope and its "Leftist rich people who own homes I can't afford and have 'weird' babies" or maybe the UES and it's "Weird leftist Jews that own the radio station I work for"
