Closing Bell: Quidditch in McCarren Park

TrespassersWill-Flickr-Quidditch.jpg
The Brooklyn Kickball League has some stiff competition at McCarren Park. Reported by The Brooklyn Paper, this past Saturday, some Harry Potter-loving college students got together in the Park to play Quidditch, "a high-flying sport practiced by wizards and witches who ride magical flying broomsticks." Obviously, there was no magical flying; feet stayed on the ground while running with the broomsticks. Definitely not something you see everyday in Brooklyn.

OK. I'm starting to rue ever having made a plea for being understanding toward hipsterdom. Watch out for splinters, douchebags!

Posted by: Beau Guest at June 23, 2009 4:10 PM

Read again. It says 'Harry Potter- loving college students'. In fact, many colleges have Quidditch teams.

Posted by: rukiddingme at June 23, 2009 4:15 PM

seriously my first instinct was to hate and make a nasty comment. but in reality it just looks like they are having fun. a lot of fun.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 23, 2009 4:22 PM

many things about hipsters bother me, but their creativity in sports and having fun is impressive. theyre not being annoying or offensive here, you should admire their carefree fun. on the other hand, yesterday i saw a group of kids in the slope all grab juices from a bodega and take off. lets be more pissed at that.

LOL ENY, good call. hahahha

FYI, there's one about "hating people who wear Ed Hardy."

How appropriate following comment from earlier in today's OT!

ZING!

Posted by: Santa at June 23, 2009 4:50 PM

They need to increase the doseage of their meds. They obviously aren't working. Oh wait, that is what got them there in the first place. It is the parents fault! They should be ganging up on bodega owners and stealing juices like normal kids.

Posted by: ou812 at June 23, 2009 4:51 PM

they are adults.

i can't stand when people who over the age of 18 are called kids.

Posted by: 11217 at June 23, 2009 5:03 PM

Santa,

I play tennis whenever I get the chance and I played soccer for about a dozen years and play with a few friends in Prospect Park on occasion. Been a bad year weather wise for it so far this year though.

Posted by: 11217 at June 23, 2009 5:04 PM

It was a joke, Rob.

I always thought you had a good sense of humor.

Posted by: 11217 at June 23, 2009 5:08 PM

Nor are any of them Asian or Latino. Next.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 23, 2009 5:08 PM

That is one painful injury if you fall the wrong way with the broomstick between your legs.

Posted by: etson at June 23, 2009 5:09 PM

ha stick in the balls.

Posted by: Santa at June 23, 2009 5:12 PM

"Nor are any of them Asian or Latino. Next."

Dave - there's plenty of Latino soccer players on the field next to it (not pictured)

You should go cruising there - you can say you were in Greenpoint so you can still brag about never going to Williamsburg. ;)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 23, 2009 5:21 PM

This makes you hate white people.

Posted by: Kannerr at June 23, 2009 5:21 PM

^^^^^^^
would you rather they hang in groups on the street, acting the fool, being loud and getting drunk, dressing like scum?

oh wait...dang this convergence

Posted by: goldie at June 23, 2009 5:30 PM

goldie is right. there are a ton of annoying things white people do, but this isnt one of them. yeah, it's not a diverse looking group, but then again, what really is?

ok and i JUST now got the convergence joke lol.

i like u goldie :)

sometimes i feel like i should be like these people doing silly sh-t. i dont think these are "hipsters" hipsters would sit at the sideline and sneer.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at June 23, 2009 6:23 PM

Ew. This is gross.

Posted by: mopar at June 23, 2009 6:34 PM

hipsters wouldnt be caught dead doing this

Posted by: Santa at June 23, 2009 6:48 PM

> hipsters wouldnt be caught dead doing this

Not without irony.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 24, 2009 10:13 AM

If you read the article in the Brooklyn paper, this was all for an MTV shoot for promos for the upcoming Harry Potter movie coming out next month. These people involved from the two schools involved don't even live in Brooklyn, and are NOT hipsters. As a couple people said, hipsters would be too cool for this.

Can't believe how judgmental you guys are (except for a few of you)! These people are just having fun. Who are they hurting?
