Checking In On Albee Square

albee-square-park-0609.jpg
The creation of a 17,000-square-foot public plaza in the Fulton Mall that will be known as Albee Square is well underway. The portion of Dekalb Avenue that is being included in the paved public space has been decommissioned already and the park is is expected to be operational, at least in part, by the holiday season. According to the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership website, Albee Square "will contain new seating, distinctive lighting, and landscaping."

Somehow the pedestrin mall concept did not result in a chic Euro-style shopping area like in Bruges or Zurich. Instead it gave us Newark without cars.
Re-open Fulton Street to regular traffic, it's a commercial street, not Main Street Disney World.

that "newark" comment was uh.. a bit uncalled for.

Yeah, what's your problem with Newark?

Posted by: East New York at June 9, 2009 11:46 AM

I like Newark -it has commercial streets with cars! Imagine that.

You have a funny way of expressing yourself, sam. I'm not sure where you're coming from. It seems like you often talk out of both sides of your mouth.

Sam, Sam. Let's see, what do Fulton Street and Newark have in common? As far as I know Newark, unlike Fulton Street, is not a hugely profitable commercial district. Let's see, could it be that Newark, like Fulton Street, is predominantly patronized bt people of African descent?

Curb the racism, please.

Holy shit, the word "Newark" is a loaded one here. I think you guys should chill out and curb your outrage. Newark is a city known for its many urban ills and planning failures. That's a fact. I know several people in Newark and they are all of Portuguese descent, so stop the name calling and the self-righteous indignation. And stop calling people racist, how do you think that helps anything?

"Newark is a city known for its many urban ills and planning failures. That's a fact."

It is also a city that in many ways has worked hard to come back from the worst days, and by some measures has been successful. Yet you clearly sought to use your unsavory image of Newark to denigrate Fulton Street, a successful, albeit not "chic Euro-style" shopping street. You shouldn't be surprised that some people don't share your views, or think your words are meant to imply something else.

Did they have to cut down all those huge trees? I was really pissed when I walked by the other day and they had been removed.

They were at least 40 years old, and provided a lot of shade on that street.

The project sponsors said at a public meeting that those trees were diseased. They will be replaced with new trees.
