Bumblebees Take Downtown Brooklyn

We missed this when the Eagle first reported on it in May, but McBrooklyn ran a photo yesterday of the traffic barrier on the north side of Tillary Street that gives cyclists an extra buffer against cars and trucks. According to the Eagle, the project was a collaboration between the Groundswell Community Mural Project and the city Department of Transportation that brings together high-school artists to create public art. Very nice.

More damn bicycles ruining the traffic in Brooklyn! Everything would be so much better if it weren't for those self-righteous pedal pushers!

Just gives them more space so they can concentrate on running down poor defenseless pedestrians and their babies!

(btw, kinda perdy. that part of brooklyn really does need a bit of brightening up.)

I'll assume you're being "ironic," and agree that it is remarkable the way that the obliquest references to bicycling can elicit knee-jerk reactions.

I'm against paint. The only thing that looks more ghetto than murals is the same murals after they've been tagged.

Congratulations Mr. Brownstoner on uncovering an evergreen issue for your blog - bicycling. Guaranteed response.

I actually agree about the paint thing... I always wondered why jersey barriers (especially the ones that are permanent) couldn't be ordered with a nice color mixed into the aggregate. Boring ol' grey concrete is pretty drab. Wouldn't it be nicer if this barrier had a yellow or green or blue or orange "tint" to it? (tinting the concrete makes it permanent -- doesn't rub off when cars hit it)
I wonder if that would make it really expensive... wouldn't think it would be extraordinarily pricey. Of course, the Mural painting is basically free.
(and yes, I was being "ironic" -- actually going more for facetious...)

It is pretty simple->
Pedestrians hate drivers and bikers
Divers hate pedestrians and bikers
Bikers hate pedestrians and bikers
Millions more drivers and pedestrians than bikers
Therefore bikers=most hated.
