ben%20and%20jerrys%20ad.JPG
We can't quite pinpoint why, but for some reason these Ben & Jerry's ads that have been popping up all over town hold a certain appeal for us...

Nice details but. it's overpriced for the area.

Offer 20% off asking price!

Although it is very close to public transportation, including the M and R lines.

I secretly enjoy Hagen Dazs' "Dulce de Fedders"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 22, 2009 11:08 AM

ironic considering that B&Jerry's ice cream is like 400 percent more than what it SHOULD cost. just like brownstones :-/

brilliant marketing!

It was done very tastfully.

Someone will be very lucky to scoop this up.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 11:11 AM

(I'm killing with the sp./typos today)

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 11:13 AM

What ad do they use in Queens?? Something with a Fiberama awning???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 22, 2009 11:15 AM

It's hard to say how this will do in a meltdown. The whole market has been turned upside down. Not like a few years ago when things were going lickety split.

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 22, 2009 11:17 AM

You may be right Biff. Even though a cherry like this is hard to top, they may have to whip up a heavy sprinkling of incentives to get it done.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 11:25 AM

OK - I know I'm a moron, but I've seen this ad and I have to say, i don't get it. There's obviously some pun going on here but I can't figure out what it is. What does ben and jerry's ice cream have to with bownstones? Normally, I'm quite witty. Really I am. Will someone help me out here? I've been trying to figure this out for about a week now.

Posted by: bkre at June 22, 2009 11:33 AM

Actually, bkre, I diodn't get it either until I realized it said "browniestone" not "brownstone."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 22, 2009 11:36 AM

You punsters are cracking me up!

You're not alone on this bkre! Ok, I get the "browniestone" bit, but why is the city upside down? Like an upside down cake? An upside down mortgage? Upside down sundae?

I just know someone is going to explain this and I am going to have to slap myself on the forehead...

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 22, 2009 11:51 AM

cobble, reverse mortgages?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 22, 2009 11:57 AM

cobble, don't have a cow! The city is upside down to symbolize that, when you turn over the ice cream container and pop it onto your plate, the ice cream is upside down (from how it was inside the container).

Posted by: Biff Champion at June 22, 2009 12:02 PM

The folks that came up with that ad must've been "browniestoned."

Posted by: dannyhellman at June 22, 2009 12:17 PM

LOL! Very funny Biff!

OK, here it comes>>>>>>>slapping myself on the forehead!! DOH!

But wait, who does that?! I eat it right out of the container, don't you! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at June 22, 2009 12:19 PM

Maybe if you buy enough of this flavor, they will give you a brownstone? Does the ice cream have stones in it? Like stone soup?

Posted by: mopar at June 22, 2009 12:20 PM

my entire office was obsessed w/these cup things after I came in and looked them up after seeing them at 4th Ave. They look delicious.

Posted by: new2hood at June 22, 2009 12:21 PM

The ad doesn't make sense.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:27 PM

Isn't the flavor Chocolate Fudge Brownie? And isn't it brownie color? This makes no sense!

Posted by: Nomi at June 22, 2009 12:27 PM

Has anyone notified PETA about that poor abused cow suspended by its hooves? Not only milked for all she's worth, but humiliated in the bargain too.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 22, 2009 12:32 PM

It's just a fun play on words. Don't take everything so literally.

Do you think Phish food tasted like fish and was the exact color of fish?

Man, tough crowd!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 12:32 PM

Very successful ad - look at this thread: brilliant minds obsessing over it!

Posted by: Arkady at June 22, 2009 12:34 PM

They are going to have trouble if they try to change the color or flavor. It's now landiemarked.

Posted by: slopefarm at June 22, 2009 12:37 PM

If it sells more ice cream, it's successful. If everyone talks about it, but it doesn't sell any more ice cream, it's unsuccessful.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:42 PM

"Do you think Phish food tasted like fish and was the exact color of fish?"

To quote the song "Do the Pee Wee" - Huh? What?

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:44 PM

Ahhhhh .... brownIEstone! I get it now. Thank you DIBS. I can now cross this off my list of "things that make me feel like an idiot".

Posted by: bkre at June 22, 2009 12:44 PM

ENY:

Posted by: TownhouseLady at June 22, 2009 12:47 PM

THL, anyone who markets ice cream under the name "Phish Food" has no reason to expect the product will be successful. Why WOULDN'T people think it tasted like fish and was the exact color of fish? That's like naming something crap and then saying, "Well, it doesn't really TASTE like crap...."

No one has adequately explained why Brooklyn - and the ice cream - are upside down on the ad.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 12:54 PM

ENY: you flip the ice cream. http://www.benjerry.com/flipped/

Posted by: jessibaby at June 22, 2009 12:58 PM

Thanks, jessibaby.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 1:01 PM

Oh! That makes it all make sense! OK, it doesn't suck anymore.

Posted by: Nomi at June 22, 2009 1:07 PM

ENY, tons of brands have names that dont necessarily tie in to their function form or flavor, but are good for recognition, recall, or awareness.

this flavor has been a success long enough that its obviously working.

Posted by: goldie at June 22, 2009 1:10 PM

"this flavor has been a success long enough that its obviously working."

But it's new, isn't it? http://www.benjerry.com/flipped/

Posted by: Nomi at June 22, 2009 1:16 PM

That's what you say, goldie. Just because it's been around a long time (according to you) doesn't mean it's successful. It's possible that, like you and THL, the owners have some strange affinity for the name "Phish Food." Furthermore it's entirely conceivable that the successful B&J flavors are subsidizing the "Phish Food" losses. I'm not saying that's what's going on here, but it's certainly possible. In any event, "Phish Food" is a disgusting name for ice cream.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 1:26 PM

it's named after the hippie band, Phish. no? it's pretty obvious just by the design and what's in it. it's actually really tasty tho :) one of the few flavors ive tried.

ENY- I think you are going to replace benson as the most lovable curmudgeon on brownstoner :-). My least favorite in bunny tracks from blue bunny. Never ate- probably, thanks to the name and the visual, never will. It's an unfortunate connection.

Posted by: bxgrl at June 22, 2009 1:41 PM

"ENY- I think you are going to replace benson as the most lovable curmudgeon on brownstoner :-)."

Thanks! It's an honor to be compared with Benson. I like to make my views known and can handle any opposing views that may come my way. Furthermore, after I make my point, I'm done, and I can certainly understand if people disagree with me. In general, I try not to take myself (or any of the issues raised here) so seriously that I can't simply move on.

Posted by: East New York at June 22, 2009 1:48 PM

JB, that looks yummy. Now I want to get myself one of these.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at June 22, 2009 1:51 PM

I hear you, Kens. Looks like it's going to be an ice-cream-for-dinner night for me!

Posted by: jessibaby at June 22, 2009 1:54 PM

I'm really hoping benson comes back soon. And that things are getting better for him. Until then you're on elevated status (and I mean that in a good way).

Posted by: bxgrl at June 22, 2009 1:56 PM

"In any event, "Phish Food" is a disgusting name for ice cream."

"Phish" is a popular band.

"Phish" is not a water dwelling invertebrate whose flavors are unlikely to be pleasant when mixed with cream and frozen. That is spelled "Fish".

The ice cream in question:

Chocolate Ice Cream with Gooey Marshmallow, Caramel Swirls & Fudge Fish

It's good, but it's no Cherry Garcia.

Posted by: northsloperenter at June 22, 2009 2:04 PM

Oh. You (goldie) were talking about Phish Food, not what's in the ad. Sorry.

Posted by: Nomi at June 22, 2009 2:11 PM

Fish are not invertebrates.

Carry on, punsters.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at June 22, 2009 2:12 PM

I once ate a pint of Phish Food for dinner for a week straight. I went to college in Vermont however.

Posted by: infinitejester at June 22, 2009 2:25 PM

Phish food is my fav B&J flavor - is it still made? I have trouble finding it.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at June 22, 2009 2:32 PM

"Fish are not invertebrates."

! My brain is not working !

Posted by: northsloperenter at June 22, 2009 2:53 PM

Bad puns are not funs
Vermont fat, milk and sugar
They got out-of-hand
