my guess, based on past disasters, is that the contractors did not know what they were doing and had no idea how shaky historic foundation walls are. They were probably excavating to underpin and the whole thing just settled and came down.

It looked to me like they were hammering stucco/mortar off the brick (former) party wall with a mechanical hammer. That wall was simply stacked brick and nothing else, and as we know there was already a large crack in it. I'm not sure that they were doing any excavating.

Last time I passed by I thought two things:

"Wow that's a huge crack, looks like the whole facade is about to peal off." and "Cheap renovations (the white brick and the smaller windows) never improve a property's value.

According to the NYT they were given a summons for cracks in the brick, so LL dutifully hires masons to fix the crack. Be nice if the DOB would have been more thorough.

My heart goes out to the people effected by the collapse of the building -I know they want answers.

I've been a tenant of Mr. Sang's for 5+ years and have nothing but the most positive things to say about him. Mr. Sang is an extremely conscientious, caring and honest person who in each instance I've dealt with him has done the right thing.
