Streetlevel: Rubdowns on Smith

Living on Smith closed last fall (not a great surprise given some of the customer feedback) and, reports a reader, a new business called Relaxing on Smith is now open in its place. Judging from the imagery on the awning, though, could this place be offering more than just backrubs? GMAP

why is it a shocker that places that gives massages offer happy endings? id wager to bet 95 percent do. i was FORCED (yes forced, dont ask) to get a manicure and pedicure for the first time ever at a place up in harlem in the 140s on broadway and the woman who was scrubbing my feet literally asked me if i wanted to go in the back for "more". :-/ i was like ew gross.

Actually it could be legitimate - in that it's just a massage place. I think these places tend to make big profit since they seem to take cash only (off the books) and also seem to hire people who are also likely paid off the books (illegal immigrants? no taxes, benefits, etc). So in terms of legality/ethics, it might not be legit. Honestly, it seems like a weird place for a happy ending kind of joint. Ick.

Yes, they offer a Brownstoner portal too!

I don't think that guy is walking by - by the look of his arms straight down his side I think he's doing a Riverdance-style Irish jig.

Gee, I liked Living on Smith, at least 5 years ago when I lived around the corner. Did the place turn over, or what? Wasn't it run by a nice Polish couple? They gave my daughter some cute plastic tea cups once, just to be nice. Maybe I'm thinking of a different place? Oh well, things change I guess.

I was always suspicious of the place between that shop and the drycleaner -- always dark, curtained off, claimed to be a "candy distributor" (riiiiiiight).
So I wonder if there's more of a story to the legit business right next door (Living on Smith) closing up and a massage parlor opening in its place. Certainly not a good sign for the neighborhood.

I'm doubtful there's going to anything "wink wink" about something in that location. More likely an upscale spa. Certainly I doubt any locals would walk into a sleazy massage parlor with all the kids and families who walk down Smith St. around there. You'd be sure to be spotted by someone you knew. I know there are some dark shops, as vanyali mentions, but those usually date from before the Smith Street change. And none of them have big awnings outside.
