Streetlevel: New Coffee Place Opening on 7th Ave.

383-7th-Avenue-Brooklyn-0509.jpg
Any day now there will be one more place in the South Slope to get a cup of joe. A tipster sent in this photo of a new cafe about to open at 383 7th Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets. Anyone know if it has a name? GMAP

rob - avert your eyes! There might be people with MacBooks!

ouch!
Naidre's is right across the street
and if Cafe Eleven which was pretty nice and had the outdoor space couldn't survive, what makes us think another coffee place will.

LOL snark

suggestions for people opening up coffee shops:

1.) iced coffee. unless your are starting with scalding coffee please dont charge 3 bux for a cup of ice with an ounce of coffee. and if someone says "light ice" they mean just fill the cup up with half ice please not the whole cup. we're paying for coffee, not ice. we'd like more than one sip for 3 bux. suggestion? keep the iced coffee in a fridge so it's already nice and cold. i stopped getting my coffee at ozzies on 5th cuz they are total butt munches when it comes to this issue.

2.) hmm ok i cant really think of any other complaints other than the iced coffee issue.

Word is it's Cafe Grumpy! YAY!

Posted by: redwagon at May 8, 2009 2:43 PM

I heard Cafe Grumpy as well.

Rob, I'm totally with you. My favorite iced coffee in the world? This little place out in the North Fork that makes iced coffee using ice cubes made of coffee.

To take it a step further, I think they should also freeze milk and you could custom request your ice (half coffee cubes, half milk), but that may be taking it a bit too far.

Rob - OH SO TRUE!
Oh and please leave room for milk
I know so many of you PS'ers are fancy pants coffee drinkers who mainly like their strong coffee black, I do not - I like my coffee with milk and sugar
gasp!

N2H
I never heard of that - genius! - frozen cubes - that's a great idea and would keep your ice coffee tasting of coffee all the way through until the end
brilliant!

The problem with cafe 11 is that they didn't really seem happy to have customers. I never ordered anything complicated when I went in there and they still seemed really put out by it. I am sorry they closed but am glad that their space was taken over by Brookvin, a really nice addition to the neighborhood. As for Cafe Grumpy, I hope they do well! It would be great if the open earlier than 7am. Would love somewhere to grab a cup of coffee while I am walking my dog! No place (aside from the 7-11) is open that early!

"rob - avert your eyes! There might be people with MacBooks!"

Rob, also beware of stroller moms, gentrifiers, college grads, the elderly and people with money.

I actually think that building is for sale that houses Brookvin and the new place, correct?

Yes - Brookvin is a welcomed addition to the nabe for sure

red horse cafe (on 6th Ave @ 12th street) makes their iced coffee using frozen coffee cubes.

> "keep the iced coffee in a fridge so it's already nice and cold."

Amen.

> "iced coffee using ice cubes made of coffee"

Once again, AMEN! Love that idea.

Rob is absolutely correct re: Ozzie's "iced" coffee.

So excited to hear about Red Horse!

Posted by: new2hood at May 8, 2009 5:00 PM

Unfortch, Red Horse does not do that anymore... Sad.

Red Horse only does Coffee Ice Cubes during summer... which started for them a few weeks ago.

Great coffee, great owners, local folks.... definitely go check it out.

Yes, it's Cafe Grumpy (cafegrumpy.com)! Another lucky neighborhood. They've already been serving up great coffee/espresso in Greenpoint and Chelsea.

yep, love Red Horse's iced coffee. They also know to brew it stronger so that it doesn't wimp out with the addition of ice. (I drink decaf, and they don't do decaf iced coffee cubes, but the coffee is strong enough that it still tastes good. I am very picky about iced coffee, and I will avoid other places in favor of Red Horse or Get Fresh on 5th Ave and 6th St (they brew Stumptown and Intelligensia, both terrific coffees)

I stand corrected - when I asked for an iced coffee during the mini-heat wave a few weeks ago, the barrista made it sound like they weren't making a come back this summer. But they are back - yay!

Now Red Horse becomes my only purveyor of ready-made iced coffee in the 'hood.
