Streetlevel: Former Dollar Store to Become...a Dollar Store

dollar-dream-fulton-0509.jpg
Remember back in the salad days of 2007 when the word on the street was that Union Market was going to set up an outpost in the former Dollar Dream store at 633 Fulton Street in Fort Greene? 'Twas not to be. After many months of renovation, the new facade was revealed last week, along with a large For Rent banner and a smaller one announcing one of the new tenants for the refurbished space: a Dollar Store. Sign o' the times.

my favorite motto on a dollar store sign i saw recently:

"every item 99 cents or higher!"

We had a near deal for the entire space for a food tenant but latter's group took forever to decide so we lost space. Bummer.

Bummer!

Ugh, why bother fixing up the facade for this!?

Well, as a long-time resident of Fort Greene ("LTRFG"?), I have to say I missed having the 99-cent store there! In a pinch, I would saunter down Fulton for glasses, aluminum roasters and other disposable cooking tins, Sterno (TM), candy for my 90-year-old aunt, a bucket, helium balloons (99-cents was a lot better than $4.50 from other places), nightlight bulbs, etc., etc.

Sorry, Guys!

:-)

The facade used to be white brick with scattered dark bricks. I'm not sure this is an improvement.

if there's a heaven, for me, it would be a gigantic dollar store in the sky. im not kidding

I'm pretty pro-dollar store. Isn't everyone? I mean, aside from rich people who want everyone else out of their neighborhoods?

Right, so hundreds of people exiting the Harvey theater will get great use out of this dollar store? Might as well stick a bodega under Forte' while you're at it.

Snob.

A bodega under Forte would be handy, actually.

Too many of most things aren't usually good for a Neighborhood. Do the residents of Lefferts Gardens, Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights need another 99 cents store, probably not? But does Fort Greene need another place to sell you a $10 salad, organic apples, or imported Beer? I would say no. Dollar stores are never a first choice but most true Fort Greeners may appreciate having at least one.

thank goodness the dollar store is back! i can't tell you how many times i've needed something cheap and fast- roasting pans, notebooks. sorry remxxed- the neighborhood- or what's left of it is not exclusively theatergoers. since when do we plan stores around people in and out of the area for two hours? god! the elitism at play! the holier than thou- we know what you people need attitude. the long time and old timers are being priced out. please allow us the privilige of being able to buy things we can afford. thank god union market didn't come in! provisions part 2!

If Fort Greene needs a 99cents store why not put it in Fort Greene? This location is zoned as the developing BAM cultural district. Residents need dollar stores, meanwhile the closest ones are in luxury condos. Not to mention that in about 2 years the Strand Theater and TFANA will be more of a reason why this space should have held out for a proper tenant. Hopefully the lease on this dollar store is short, so it can be bumped out when the economy picks up.

The dollar store that used to be there was not all that great, but it had its purpose. That particular block of Fulton (at least during the day) is really busy with people coming and going to the government offices next door. (Social Security Admin, Food Stamps, etc.)

I wouldn't mind having a mid-size grocery in the neighborhood, but it can go somewhere else. The BAM "cultural district" has a much smaller radius than brokers want to tell you. Just about everything west of Ashland is downtown BK in my opinion.

where's the love?
a "proper" tenant? elitist, much? why are some people so against neighborhoods having services??!! and yes- a cheap retail shop is a service.and yes- it can co exist with theaters- as it did for years before. the way the economy is going more of us will be at those govt agencies and need to shop at dollar stores!
now can we just get a new hardware store? god i miss 7 corners!

Posted by: ramona at May 19, 2009 10:16 AM

Yes ReMXxed, what exactly is a "proper" tenant.
