StreetLevel: Franny's Cheese Shop Opening Soon

bklyn%20larder-streetlevel-5-20.JPG
The folks behind Franny's are in the process of setting up a new shop close to their restaurant called Bklyn Larder. The store, which is on Flatbush near the corner of Bergen, will carry "beautiful cheeses and thoughtfully chosen foodstuffs available to us from around the world, chosen by Sergio Hernandez, as well as prepared foods in the tradition of the food at franny’s (simple preparation, seasonality and uncompromising quality) packaged to serve at home."

and good coffee.

and minus the 'tude that usually accompanies these types of establishments.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at May 28, 2009 2:09 PM

i don't find franny's folks to have much of a 'tude, if any. we take our toddler there, and we are super-lame, and they're *still* really nice to us.

Posted by: i disagree at May 28, 2009 2:12 PM

I can't wait!

Posted by: pop at May 28, 2009 2:16 PM

There is a picture of ham on their web site...

I'm feeling good about this place.

Posted by: northsloperenter at May 28, 2009 2:18 PM

This place sounds nice, and an easy bike ride from home. What is people's opinion of Stinky Brooklyn? I love their selection but do not really enjoy shopping there. For various reasons.

Posted by: CG_ups at May 28, 2009 2:38 PM

people who complain about "tude" seem to have self esteem issues.

its a fuckin cheese shop. You go in and buy cheese. Who cares if they give you "tude" if the food is good.

suweet. Can't wait.

Franny's has the MOST tude of any restaurant, bar none. And it makes for really stupid business decisions. When the kitchen backs up they will not seat anyone! they could say, "our kitchen is relly busy now but if you would like to have a seat and enjoy a drink for a short while..." But they do not -- I have even asked! Told we had to stand at the bar (it was packed) so we walked out. Walked out more than once for stupid stuff like that.

excited for a decent place to grab a loaf of bread and some cheese but hoping that the prices aren't out of line like they are at franny's. i refuse to patronize that palce because a pizza, a salad and a drink will set you back $50 and no one is full.

Posted by: tiptoe at May 28, 2009 3:15 PM

God I miss East Village Cheese...

Posted by: northsloperenter at May 28, 2009 3:32 PM

I eat at Franny's pretty regularly and never once encountered a "'tude"

I'm quite looking forward to this place opening up. Will hopefully be a great place to pick up dinner on the way home when not in the cooking mood...

Posted by: 11217 at May 28, 2009 3:51 PM

We had to wait for a table at Franny's once because they had "run out of menus."

Only about half full at the time.

I am not lying.

Haven't been back.

Posted by: likes2lurk at May 28, 2009 4:00 PM

I'm not really sure why some people say Franny's is so expensive. For specialty pizza's with locally grown, organic toppings, the pizza's range from $8 - 17 bucks. Is that a lot?

Posted by: 11217 at May 28, 2009 4:02 PM

Wow, that sucks likes2lurk. I don't blame you for not going back after something like that.

Posted by: 11217 at May 28, 2009 4:04 PM

Frannys is ok. The wine list is retarded. Please have more than 1 bottle under 40$. I am eating Pizza, I am not at Per Se. As for attitude, not seating someone is attitude??? Good Lord, grow some.

Posted by: billyboomer at May 28, 2009 4:11 PM

I like Franny's a lot. Find their wait staff to be friendly and very knowledgeable about the food they're serving.

As for overpriced wine: I skip the wine and have beer. MMMMM, capt lawrence. Also, even though I like the pizza there, it isn't their best dish. There best dishes are the seasonal appetizers, in my opinion.

Can't wait for this store to open...

I brought two well-behaved toddler relatives to an (early, Sunday) dinner at franny's once for my birthday. We'd done my birthday there the year before, with the same kids, a year younger, that went really well. This time, despite recognizing me as a regular, they treated my family like pariahs. They suggested we take the kids outside - in DECEMBER. When I complained about the treatment, I was told "this isn't Chuck E. Cheese."

The response I got when I wrote to complain translated to "our employee was a little out of line with the comment, but we agree with the general tenor of how you were treated otherwise. Here, have a gift certificate."

Needless to say, I haven't been back.

I_disagree, you may be having better luck for now, but I wouldn't count on it holding.

While I love the quality of the food at Franny's, as well as the emphasis on local foods, I'm in the camp that no longer goes there because of the prices and the attitude. While the pizzas start at $8, that pizza has no cheese and no tomatoes--basically, it's the dough with some oil and salt. To me, that is expensive. Once cheese and tomatoes are involved, you're looking at $15. And that's not too bad for a pie--I happily pay almost $10 more for a pie at UPN. That being said, the pies are a lot smaller at Franny's, and their refusal to slice them seems to have no other purpose than to say "we're better than you." (Incidentally, one can make the same observation that people go go along with 'tude have self esteem issues--i.e., "The proprietor and I obviously know more about food than you, and that's why we're so into the hoity-toitiness").

The beer on tap seems only slightly expensive at $7, but it comes in a glass that couldn't have been more than 10 ounces, and appeared to have been 8 (it's a real pint* glass when you order at the bar--go figure). I couldn't help but chuckle when it came out, to which the waitress scowled at me and said "Is there a problem?" in a demanding tone.

All that aside, I think an earlier poster was right in noting that it's hard to have a lot of attitude when standing behind a counter and selling cheese/cured meat, so I do hope that Brooklyn Larder turns out to be a nicer experience. I'm looking forward to seeing how it shapes up. Hopefully, they'll take their cue from some place like the Bedford Cheese Shop and not from the mothership further down Flatbush.

*With the caveat that most "pint" glasses in the U.S. actually measure in at about 14 ounces.

phbalanced -- that's rotten. I've never been to Franny's, and I doubt I'll ever go...

Posted by: northsloperenter at May 28, 2009 6:27 PM

so, for everyone who doesn't like Franny's...where do you go to eat?

not for pizza (if you want the best nyc pizza: DiFara's, by far and away)but for seasonal italian?

Posted by: young archi at May 28, 2009 8:12 PM

I go to Aliseo on Vanderbilt around the corner when I want my fine Italian fix. The prices are about the same as Franny's, but you get a real dinner for that money, not pizza and salad.

If you ask nicely, and they are not busy, they'll negotiate a wine-pairing deal with you--instead of getting two glasses of red, they'll parse out that two glasses into several small ones of white, prosecco, red, and dessert wine, changing with the course.

As for attitude--I have always found Aliseo to be laid back and Italian, charming.

Another big plus: unlike Franny's it's cozy and you can converse with your dinner companion without yelling. The room at Franny's is all hard surfaces and echoes--it's really an unpleasant room to eat in.

Count me among the ones who are "over" Franny's

I agree with most everyone on this blog. Franny's has a great rep for the pizza, but that is because NYMag has raved about this place so many damn times. Why? becasue a relative of Francine's is the food editor... that's why. So people go based on the reviews. Is it worth the wait and the money? I dont think so. I have been there wwith a large crowd and when it started to get busy, Franny walked by our table every 3seconds to make sure we getting ready to leave. The waitress deposited our check before we asked for it and didnt offer us dessert. That takes balls, and anyone in the restaurant business knows that is the worst thing you could do to a customer. When we finally paid the bill, not even a thank you from Franny herself. $350!! no thank you, "Come back again" smile, something. nada. Many people have similar stories. If you are looking for a friendly staff and great food, try GEIDO the Japanese restaurant on the next block. You want really, really great food, go to Blue Ribbon on Fifth Avenue. Otherwise, stick to Manhattan for good Napolitan brick oven pizza, there are hundreds, less expensive and i am sure they will appreciate you as a customer and say thank you, even for a $3.00 slice.

Peperoncino

Posted by: northsloperenter at May 28, 2009 11:03 PM

Perhaps someone should print this out and post it on Franny's door, since there seems to be so many people who have issues with the place.

That might be a wake up call...

Posted by: 11217 at May 29, 2009 11:02 AM

Franny's is a magnet for haters. I think it may have to do with expectations not meeting hype. It is an excellent neighborhood restaurant. I live around the corner and LOVE it. Go there about once a week. Their pastas are to die for, and the anchovy pizza--divine! And I've always found the service to be quite friendly. I do agree the wines can be pricey but all in all I am a big fan of the place. To each his own!

Posted by: bklynrosie at May 29, 2009 11:27 AM

Also: sorry, but Aliseo and Peperoncino are not even close to being in the same league as Franny's IMHO. Apples and Oranges.

Posted by: bklynrosie at May 29, 2009 11:31 AM

"Also: sorry, but Aliseo and Peperoncino are not even close to being in the same league as Franny's IMHO. Apples and Oranges. "

That may be the case -- I've never been to Franny's.

But the staff at Peperoncino are friendly and welcoming, the food is good, it's fairly easy to get a seat, the prices aren't bad, and I don't have to worry about someone telling me to take my kid to "chuck e. cheese".

If I just want fantastic food, I can cook it myself. When I go out to a restaurant, I expect to have a good time.

Posted by: northsloperenter at May 29, 2009 11:48 AM

I think Peperoncino is quite bad actually. And no less expensive than Franny's.

Talk about a place I'd never go back to.

I'm done with Franny's. Too precious, and insanely overpriced for what it is. I've had some delicious things here, but...19 bucks for a clam pie that has, like, 4 clams on it? 15 bucks for appetizers?

I was there with a friend a few months ago, and we ordered the special appetizer - some sort of pork belly thing that just happened to be terrible. The piece we got was a solid hunk of fat with a very weird, unpleasant flavor. Told the waitress we were a bit surprised and dismayed by the taste (it was bad!). She whisked it away without a word. Later we were visited by a manager who said, "I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the pork belly... because everyone else is raving about it." And it shows up on the bill, even though the waitress TOOK IT AWAY.

This, my friends, is what we call 'tude.

I'll take Amorina any day. Not the same thing, but delicious, cheap, and no one acting all haughty and virtuous about their artisanal cred.
