Streetlevel: Checkers Signage Goes Up

checkers-court-street-0509.jpg
As two tipsters have already emailed us to say, the Checkers restaurant currently under construction at 111 Court Street just got its signage up this morning. In addition, one notes, "the inside is starting to look like a restaurant (large kitchen equipment, a service counter, a counter along one side for people to eat at)." The anticipation builds.

F Checkers! Where is Sonic when we need them? They have teh Snickers shake thing...Checkers...FEH!

Posted by: CrabappleNYC at May 7, 2009 2:23 PM

hopefully Checkers won't steal your identity like those b*stards from the former BusyChef.

Posted by: martis at May 7, 2009 2:36 PM

They seriously don't sell milkshakes? Then I won't bother trying them out.

BusyChef stole identities???

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 2:41 PM

isn't checkers and sonic owned by the same company? nary a difference!

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at May 7, 2009 2:48 PM

Checkers is NOT owned by the same company that owns Sonic. Checkers/Rally's is part of a privately held company. Sonic is publicly traded (SONC).

Further, Checkers DOES sell milk shakes. Go cruise around the company's website. Milk shakes are listed under desserts.

Full disclosure: I took the photo and am going through a bit of Checkers obsession. Yes. I need help.

oh, and who said they don't have milkshakes? they gottem on the menu on their web site. although it may be debatable how much milk is actually involved.

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at May 7, 2009 3:16 PM

wendy's is the only place that has the best shakes EVER!!! they dont call them milkshakes tho, they call them frosties, so that's what im used to call them.

Incidentally, that liquor store next door is excellent.

Posted by: hermanjoshua at May 7, 2009 3:25 PM

True on the liquor store. You wouldn't know it from looking at the joint, but they've beefed up their bourbon selection and they carry organic wines and all (if you're into that sort of thing). Guy named Todd -- mustache, "Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism Since 1492" t-shirt, and an Iron Maiden belt buckle -- dropped some wine knowledge on me when I was in there on Saturday.

And on weekday mornings, you can watch construction crew workers pick up their morning pick-me ups in convenient airline-sized bottles.

you know ragin cagin that ALWAYS scares me. in soho which is a constant construction zone i always see guys drinking beers from paper bags in all the delis and stuff. while they are on the job. no wonder there are so many construction accidents. i mean who knows maybe they need a shot in the middle of the day to calm their nerves or something and it actually makes their job safer? but it's still mind boggling to me.

Rob,
Then you certainly don't want to go into the Blarney Stone on Third Ave, between 44th and 45th during lunch on a weekday to see what they -- and your friendly National Grid workers -- are having for lunch.

Zap liquors is the best. way better than S+V especially their $10 and under selection.....not to mention zero pretension nor a hipster in sight. their clientele is primarily sad-faced, ringless, middle aged women. LOL thank god i have a precious few more years before we can put me in that category.....

In Jersey City, Fatburger was the closest restaurant to our house. I will never have the same cavalier joy about high-end fast food again. Is this another chain or something?

2 things.

1 - As stated above, that liquor store is actually really good. Great bourbon and scotch selection and very knowledgeable staff.

2 - The Blarney Stone in midtown is an awesome bar.

Zap's pretty good, it's true. The selection could be better, but it's not bad, considering the size of the place. And Todd knows his wine and spirits. In fact, he's the only guy working there who knows what he's talking about. Fortunately, he's always there.

As for Checkers: Eesh.

I didn't know Todd's name but he's been very helpful for me in the past; I went in once looking for a bottle of sherry to use in a recipe and he steered me towards one that was tasty and very affordable. Lots of other places would try to upsell you instead.
