Streetlevel: Bell Tower Opens on Livingston

163-Livingston-Street-Brooklyn-0509.jpg
In case you were distressed at the news last February of Timeless Treasures's closing, you're in luck: its replacement at 163 Livingston Street in Downtown Brooklyn is another Christian-themed store called Bell Tower. From what we gather, it's being operated by the Tabernacle which owns the building. GMAP

"In case you were distressed at the news.."

Don't think the sarcastic tone is called for here, or in the original post. Don't see things expressed in such a way about other religions on the blog.

The tone is exactly the same as the tone in yesterday's streetlevel about a Dollar Store replacing a Dollar Store.

Posted by: brownstoner at May 19, 2009 2:16 PM

Exactly, what's the matter with the tone? One came, another similar one replaced it. Either way, big yawn for most readers, I bet.

Well yes, but you expressed lighthearted disappointment yesterday in the dollar store moving back in. Religion is obviously a deeper issue than dollar stores. I don't think it would have been expressed this way if it were a Jewish or Muslim bookstore, and Christanity merits the same respect.
Love the blog generally - just did not think this post and the original one on this space were cool.

Merry [war on] Christmas! Perhaps a little inquisition-style torture would put Mr. B in a more righteous state of mind.

I'd take a dollar store over a religious book store any day. A religious book store of any denomination, in fact.

Religious book store? Really? Shakes head... a sucker really is born every minute. 2nd a dollar being > than nut store.

Instead of hate literature, why not take some science classes and learn how the world really works. But, a rational thinking is not the way a delerious mind works.

Will they carry The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins?
I've been dying to read that book.

I think this is nice. You don't hear that much about God anymore.

Posted by: East New York at May 19, 2009 2:58 PM

That's a funny one, ENY. I mean it.

My first thought was how in depth their book stock would be. The best Christian books come from scholarly presses like Eerdman's and Abingdon.

Posted by: infinitejester at May 19, 2009 3:55 PM

i think people who focus on religion have a simple mind.

Posted by: swine_flu at May 19, 2009 3:59 PM

some could say the same about people who focus on brownstones, swineflu. :-/

im not a religious person (tho i did puke at my 2nd grade communion), but people have the right to religion as long as it's not imposing on other people and i dont see how this builing is imposing on anyones beliefs or non beliefs. yes boo hoo to some it can't be another overpriced whine bar or other such yuppie establishment.

Surely you mean inquisition-style enhanced interrogation techniques.

Thanks, brownie.

And they say that religion leads to intolerance - you'd think quite the opposite from reading this thread!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 19, 2009 4:23 PM

Did you hear that Zeus? Looks like you're going to have a following again! Yay religion!

This country was founded upon religious freedom. Even Brooklyn was called the Borough of Churches at one time. Let is not forget our heritage. Even if you don't believe, have respect for those that do. Thank You and God bless.

Indeed! Let us hearken back to a simpler time when the sun revolved around the flat earth, and we burned anybody who said otherwise!

infinitejester, what you said here is the most ignorant post on the entire board. Scared to step out of your comfort zone? huh, huH, Huh!
