The FGVOTD is often a tribute to a topic discussed in the prior day's Open Thread.

This tune from the one-hit wonder Starland Vocal Band is for DIBS; who introduced the term "nooner" to many of us PLUSAs.

This video may not be the most exciting one ever made (although there are probably some very funny lines we can imagine the one construction worker saying to the other at the 1:34 mark), but the lyrics are timeless:

Thinkin 'bout you's working up my appetite
Lookin' forward to a little Afternoon Delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite
And the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting

I'm not sure I was first to introduce the word to the sheltered world of the OT. If my memory serves me right I commented on nooners after rob admitted to one on his birthday. Although I may more frequently engage in such dalliances I'm not sure if the credit for the opening of this discussion is entirely mine.

Full disclosure: I had a noontime massage yesterday.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 12, 2009 9:22 AM

Seems that randolph may not have had a nooner in a long time. Maybe nothing at all in a long time. Sad, really.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 12, 2009 9:25 AM

anyone have any experience with the vet on 5th ave in park slope between 7th and 8th street? i have to bring my dog there tonight :( yesterday we noticed he was rather depressed and lethargic and his eyes are like glued shut and runny and bloodshot. do you think it might be allergies to pollen? there's no pollen in manhattan, and i know there's a lot of pollen in brooklyn and this is his first spring there.

do you think it's necessary i bring him to the vet? i just know it's gonna cost a good couple of hundred bucks and ill be so mad if it's just a little head cold or pollen allergy, but at the same time i dont want my roommates very old dog catching anything if it's contagious or my dog to go blind or anything :(

do vets do payment plans? would it be ghetto to even ask them? im just hoping it's not more than 300 dollars, but i guess if it is i will just have to pony it up. dumb dog better appreciate!

^^^^^^
Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody
knows Your name.

BRG....the only one I know of is the Liberty Inn. Are there others???

Rob - am sorry about your dog
I know the vet on 7th aven around 11th street is always packed with folks and the people look nice

Posted by: gemini10 at May 12, 2009 9:42 AM

Rob,

I can't advise about whether you should take your dog to the vet, but I can tell you that Dr. Madden (at 5th Ave, 7th-8th Streets) is absolutely the best. Very smart, a good obsrver of animal behavior, good bedside manner with animals and people, thoughtful diagnostician. Took great care of our old cat years ago who battled lymphoma for about a year. Is great with our current crazy trio. Remembers the patient well from visit to visit. Get there on time but expect to wait about half an hour or more. Can't imagine it will run you $300 unless your dog needs lots of tests and workups.

Good luck.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 12, 2009 9:45 AM

ah yeah i think that might be the emergency vet clinic gemini. i just looked up eye problems with dogs and all the websites say dont overlook any eye problem even if you think it might just be an allergy.

I think we should all go to the Lotus Gallery and get tattoos of our favorite brownstoner poster.

I want to see a lot of I L O V E D I B S tattooed across your fingers.

Did you PLUSAs know that nuts are good for your eyes? (unless you're using walnuts to try to scratch them out)

DIBS, you must have 20/20 vision.

See as much as I love dogs, this is why I don't get one. I would fall completely in love with it and at the slightest cold I would fork over whatever is necessary to fix it.

Posted by: LincolnSlope at May 12, 2009 9:54 AM

"I want to see a lot of I L O V E D I B S tattooed across your fingers."

That would work perfectly for any nine-fingered PLUSAs out there.

Well, to resolve the 9 digit issue, you could have an exclamation point at the end!

I L O V E D I B S !

DH, will you join us this Thursday at Waterfront Ale House around 7pm for a wobbly pop or two?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 10:13 AM

rob- the place on 7th is Animal Kind- they're very nice and very good and very very expensive. They don't do payment plans, as far as I know. At least they didn't used to and in the case of one pet I took there, they performed a lot of unnecessary and outrageously expensive tests for an animal they knew wouldn't live more than a few days. When you're desperate to save your pet you grasp at straws. My regular vet was very upset with them. But they are open late for emergencies if you ever need and the head vet (whose name I forgot) and several others are really great.

I thought Thursday was at the place in Ft Greene?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 12, 2009 10:16 AM

I use Animal Kind on 7th @ 11th & think they're terrific. For one thing, they'll answer questions over the phone when you're not sure you really have to take the pet in. They're open late. And the vet I see used to be a psychiatric social worker & is great at calming down owners who might be over-reacting (last week her only Rx for a bloody nose my cat had was suggesting I take a Valium...)

Posted by: Arkady at May 12, 2009 10:17 AM

bxgrl....I hear you on that one. We brought our 19 year old burmese cat to the hospital at Penn and the admitted him and we kept him there for about two weeks at which point I said this is enough. He was clearly depressed, and they had run up an enormous bill with all kinds of tests every day. You do these things for yourself, not for the cat. We learned.

You couldn't begin to guess the size of the bill.

DIBS, are you serious? That's the Brooklyn Public House and will be the site of the next big gathering on Thursday, June 18 (although I'm still wondering if they have enough space).

This Thursday is our pseudo-impromptu gathering at Waterfront Ale House on Atlantic.

dave- sadly, I can imagine. And my poor 18 year old cat was there for 4 days until i went over and took him out and told them no more. he died the next morning- My regular vet put him to sleep. Now that was man i adored. he just retired though and I still go to his old practice but the new vet is just not the same. He's really nice but I was with my old vet for a long time.

Rob,
Check Brooklynian as well for vet info (I have no pets myself so can't offer anything personally). Always seems like they have a ton of such questions on there. Here is a recent thread of theirs that may be relevant:

http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50204&highlight=vets

Don't see how it would do any harm to ask if they have a payment plan. Worst they can do is say that they don't.

Posted by: etson at May 12, 2009 10:44 AM

Rob / Pitbull - You can absolutely get financing for vet care. It's called care credit, I got it when my dog was admitted to the emergency clinic and they wanted $2000 for the initial stuff, and possibly another $7000 for MRI and spinal surgery. After I recovered from hysterical crying (how can you choose between your dog and having to rob a bank), they explained to me the whole care credit thing. It's basically a credit card (backed by GE Money, sub of GE). It's totally legit. No interest for a year, but after that, it's a whopping 23% APR or something, so try to repay it within a year. Call the office and see if they accept it, if they do then they probably have all the paperwork that you need to fill out. Good luck, hope it's nothing serious.

ps. for ongoing care, we actually found a wonderful amazing vet in Staten Island, his name is Dr. Kinnear. They charge $60 for a regular visit, don't try and upsell you with all those bogus charges and are super nice and provide high quality care. It's a 30 minute car ride from Carroll Gardens and totally worth the drive.

Posted by: CG_ups at May 12, 2009 10:49 AM

Rob, I take my cat to the one on 5th ave and 7th street...they are very good and reasonably priced. At least for cats anyway.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 10:49 AM

rob- no- the guy you are asking about is a different vet. Always get a sense of what your vet would do for an animal. Some vets will do any amount of tests and procedures, even for a terminally ill animal. My vet at Cobble Hill Animal clinic was always up front and honest. He refused to keep an animal alive to make an owner happy- only if he could save an animal with some quality of life.

On the other hand, there was a dog owner one building over who had a pet with advanced cancer and her vet kept operating because she insisted. An ethical vet won't do that to an animal.

Posted by: bxgrl at May 12, 2009 10:50 AM

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 10:52 AM

Snappy,

I have to bring my Turkish Van wild guy in for his annual, soon. If yours are due, we should plan to have our cats meet up in the vets office. As you can see from my post above, we are big fans of Dr. Madden.

There, now, we've combined matchmaking and cats in the OT.

Rob, stick with the original plan and avoid Animal Kind. The vets will take good care of you on 5th Ave.

My First Dictionary

A library assistant in Leeds, England, is doing wickedly subversive things with the illustrations he finds in children’s books. His bosses may disapprove, but we couldn’t be more delighted.

Ross Horsley’s blog, My First Dictionary, matches the drawings to definitions of his own devising: Pocketbook is described as the bag Mother uses to carry money and Xanax. A clone, we learn, is “a copy of a person. How would you know if your daddy had been replaced by a clone?” The adults in Horsley’s world tend toward the lecherous; the pets are abandoned; the children, sinister. Older readers will be reminded of Shel Silverstein’s classic Uncle Shelby’s ABZ Book. And younger readers should probably be warned away.

rob, bxgrl-

I'm looking for a vet, too. We use Cobble Hill but the original vet, Dr. Maddox, sold the business and I'm not sure I'm loving the new guy that bought it. Let's just say the bedside manner could use a bit of work. Dr. Maddox used to take his time to explain things and really make recommendations that made sense for everyone. He was of the mindset that there was no sense paying for an expensive procedure if the dog didn't have long to live and was honest in helping you gauge things like that. The new Doc tells you a list of all the things you can do and doesn't make strong recommendations about the truly best course of action would be in his opinion. We have to ask a lot more questions to get any answers.

Just figured I'd let you know before Rob checked him out or bxgrl decided to take pets back to him.

Yeah, I liked "In Bruges" -- although I wasn't watching it closely, husband was. It did good job of both confounding and meeting expectations, which is what I want in a movie.

Brooklyn Veterinary Hospital on Vanderbilt seems pretty good to me. I really like the head vet's realistic attitude about pet care... they don't try and do a bunch of crazy stuff you can't afford, which is in contrast (for me) to the place we were going in Williamsburg, which wanted me to start feeding my cats raw food and probiotics in addition to giving them acupuncture and massage.

I am not saying it's bad to feed your cats raw food and probiotics and give them acupuncture and massage... just, when you have four that adds up and I don't want to feel like a bad cat mom because I just give kibble and let it be.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 12, 2009 12:51 PM

Heather, are you coming on Thursday? I'm still torn on where to have the June 18 party in Clinton Hill. Brooklyn Public House seems decent; just worried about the size (no short stick comments, please). Do you know Lox Lounge? Would that be a decent option?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 12:53 PM

"which wanted me to start feeding my cats raw food and probiotics in addition to giving them acupuncture and massage."

WHAT???? Ok, that's just nutso. I consider my cat spoiled simply because she eats the 'good stuff' from the pet store instead of crap like 9 Lives or Friskies (which is nothing but beaks and toenails) and gets some tuna and steak every once in a while. Sounds like that vet is trying to get people to spend more money than they should. I love my cat, but geesh!

Speak for yourself Cobble. If I show up and am wearing my plastic pumps...get the short stick out, we are partying till the wee hours of the morning.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 12, 2009 1:03 PM

To my old ass, the 'wee hours' would be like 10pm! What are you people, like under 30 or something? Where is all this energy coming from???

"Speak for yourself Cobble. If I show up and am wearing my plastic pumps...get the short stick out, we are partying till the wee hours of the morning."

If you show up in plastic pumps I promise to stay out until the wee hours with you!

[You may have to carry me part of the way, but I will be there! ; )]

Do you guys actually have "after-hours" places in proper brownstone brooklyn?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 12, 2009 1:08 PM

HA! — after hours places here?! Oh, that tickles me so!

I sincerely doubt it, but I'm such an old lady, I might just be out of it!

By 1 am I'm pissed off and wishing I were home snoozing with the Golden Girls playing in the background on tv! Sigh. I'm so old. When you are young, it's totally fun to be out all night and not get home until the sun comes up again. Now, when the sun goes down I go all Cinderella on my friends like 'I gotta go home...NOW!'

G10, are you coming Thursday?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 1:32 PM

Sounds like you need a Red Bull Snappy - I hear they give you wings!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 12, 2009 1:34 PM

Anyone see where the co-pilot on the crashed commuter plane near Buffalo was 24 years old? WTF. Isn't it the case you used to not be able to rent a car until you were 25?

Posted by: infinitejester at May 12, 2009 1:35 PM

I encountered problems back in the day when trying to rent a car - but I think it was eventually ruled unconstitutional, so now they just charge you an arm and a leg if you are younger then 25

I suppose for my next road trip I should just rent an airplane.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 12, 2009 1:37 PM

I will be ready to drink, I have to fire someone Thursday afternoon.

Posted by: infinitejester at May 12, 2009 1:37 PM

LOL DH. I don't do caffeine though! Besides, if I had wings at 1am, I'd just flap my way home and into bed :)

Infinite...sounds like a job will be opening up then? Let me introduce myself...Snappy - employee extrordinaire! I'm available :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 1:39 PM

Not sure, Biff. I want to, but friend in town staying with us then and husband flying to India the next morning... (which, by the way, sucks) -- so the timing is sorta bad. Not really the night to skip out and leave him with the kid, or leave friend with the kid, or take the kid... so, probably not. Bah, humbug. If you started at say, 4PM or something, sure. But starting at 7 makes it harder. Maybe friend and I will go there with kid at 4PM and have beer.

Brooklyn Publick house has a pretty large dining room and the tables all come together I think -- should be fine for room? Dunno Lox, is that the place on Fulton near the post office?

Posted by: Heather at May 12, 2009 1:40 PM

LOL Snappy...

btw I take Paula. Danny needs a haircut, Gordon keeps the unkempt around but discriminates against them in the end.

No!!! I want Danny to win! Danny has a James Hetfield/early Metallica thing going on with his hair and I love it!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 1:50 PM

Oh, that's too bad, Heather. While I would love to start drinking at 4, if I did so, it would have to be in my office (which wouldn't be the first time).

So you think Brooklyn Public House is ok? At the gatherings, most people stand and drink and chat; nobody really sits at tables, although they'll sit on couches if we're at a loungy place. Not too familiar with Lox. It has a huge, industrial looking door in front apparently. Was suggested by someone here.

Biff - my issue is we are renting the apt now so I have loads of people coming in this week in the evenings to see it - if we close up shop by 8ish I can head over

I kind got pounced on yesterday in one of the threads b/c I wanted to share with other owners that renters are out there.
But I posted my apt at 12pm on Craiglist and by 2:15 had like 8 people interested and all of them are coming over the next 2 days to see it - this is a $2800 2Br rental in PS

"they are called the "freelance brigade"

Also known as out-of-work media types. There are no "unemployed" journalists, only "freelancers."

Posted by: East New York at May 12, 2009 3:00 PM

Kens- sorry- didn't see your post. Yes- I have been to him and feel the same way. Dr. Maddox was my vet for years and I have never seen a better one. I was heartbroken when he retired- he was the best. Montrose does like the new guy- she had to have one of her cats put to sleep and she said he was very kind and compassionate with her. They also have a woman vet who comes in part time- I can't stand her. She's a b*tch. No pun intended.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 12, 2009 3:04 PM

That must be one rough cat you've got there, DIBS. One of ours -- the Turkish Van -- will attack and intimidate big dogs, but is a sweetheart lap cat with people. We are trying him out in the front yard with a leash and harness to see if he can hang out with us outside without running across teh street.

Seriously, rob, Dr. Madden's office is pretty mellow. Waiting room is never overcrowded. Cats stay in carriers and people take responsibility for their dogs. Keep yours on a short leash and it is unlikely you will need the muzzle. Madden and his staff are pros. Just be responsible and everything will be fine.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 12, 2009 3:08 PM

He just got a little feisty when the vet was "doing things" to him...otherwise he's a fine 22 lb. lap cat.

There are 2 cats across the small street from us in Philly who will both regularly stalk and gang up on dogs!!!! Its a riot to watch.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 12, 2009 3:12 PM

Dave, mine always do the dying duck routine. they go all limp and lifeless and look up at you with those big mournful eyes. And to make it worse, they mew piteously and loudly.

rob, let us know how the puppy does. And if you like the vet.

Chicken- I saw in Bruges. Very good, very dark movie- Too depressing. I can't say I liked it though because it did such a good job of making you depressed.

Dave, have to ask. you refer to your mecixan bf and chinese bf often and sometimes, just say "our". So, is one a live in and one a "piece on the side"? or do you live with both, which would either be pretty cool or an absolute horror.

Posted by: Troy McClure at May 12, 2009 3:50 PM

biff- and then they started quoting her in the NY Times too. Horrible. I was expected to genuflect to the "oft-quoted in the New York Times" MM. Hmmmphf. The last straw was the day I had to use a crowbar to help her get her head through the doorway.

Chicken- Star Trek is great!! In Bruges was pretty dark- I thought- I mean, my endomorphins don't kick in when someone splatters on the ground and their buddy is shot all to hell. And the better the movie, the more disturbing it is. So I haven't been able to watch it again.

Posted by: bxgrl at May 12, 2009 3:51 PM

DIBS, what is the most bizarre food you've eaten? I'm assuming it was somewhere is Asia.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 3:51 PM

Troy...the "we" refers to me and my partner who is Filipino and lives in the house we have in Philly. The Chinese bf and the Mexican bf are up here in NYC. I see them both once a week or so. They know about the partner in Philly.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 12, 2009 3:54 PM

ah. sorry to be nosy, just couldn't help being overly curious.

Posted by: Troy McClure at May 12, 2009 3:58 PM

Python in Vietnam, little baby whole birds in Hong Kong, fried grasshoppers in Bangkok and the fried gusanos worms in Mexico. They were all very good. Durian, on the other hand, tastes like rotten mush.

One of the best meals I've ever had was pig trotter ravioli sprinkled with crispy pig tongue bits in Siena. Baby eels are delightful.

So if you see one, make sure you see the other the same amount of time.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 12, 2009 4:00 PM

Yes, I think QOTD was awarded permanently and retired. Obviously not a good business move for Mr. B as the lobbying and backbiting was good for 50 comments a day, easy.

Snappy, there was a show on MTV (maybe part of their Real Life or whatever it's called series) that was entitled something like "I'm a Jersey Shore Girl". It was an hour of amusement that I watched in disbelief as I wondered if I'm even of the same species as these people. Not saying I'm better or worse, just very different!

Biff, I'll say it, we are better! They were scary! I remember what it was like to be young and all about a party and some drinks, but I can honestly say I never acted like that. They really make me shake my head!

THL, the RHNY reunion looks good!

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 12, 2009 5:48 PM

Damn, why so late? Argh...I guess one night without watching Murder She Wrote won't kill me :) I'll make some popcorn and crack open a beer. Yay! Trash TV jammy party for me and the kitty :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 5:48 PM

I totally remember that! Tommy is a piece of work huh?

He said to the girl he's just met an hour ago and is bringing home, "We only drive Cadillacs. We've all got money, you're with some rich boys now."

CLASSY

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 5:49 PM

BRG's new pick up line:

'I only drive a Cadillac. I got money, you're with a rich girl now.'

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 12, 2009 5:53 PM

This one's shorter. "Where's my cheeseballs?"

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 5:57 PM

Ha ha! Maybe if he dropped a hammer on his head he'd think a little more clearly!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 6:00 PM

Snappy, are you going on Thursday? If I go and drive, you're welcome to ride shotgun as I have to cut thru Greenwood Heights to get downtown.
I have a meeting in the afternoon and depending how early I'm done, I might come home and get the car. So let me know.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 12, 2009 6:02 PM

WPLJ does their annual Summer Blastoff at Jenkinson's on the boardwalk...I've been tempted to go and check that madness out first hand, but I don't think I can get up that early to be that grossed out!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 6:02 PM

Sorry all. Snappy I'll just email you.

Oh, I'm lauging so hard I'm crying

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 6:08 PM

Biff, you so have to put that up as tomorrow's FGVOTD. That should be seen by everyone!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 12, 2009 6:09 PM

Run it as the FGVOTD. I doubt too many people are seeing this and it's worth a reviewing. I could watch it ever day.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 6:09 PM

My belly hurts so bad from laughing I felt like I was stoned.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 6:11 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 6:54 PM

Sorry, on Bravo

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 12, 2009 6:59 PM

Probably uselessly late, but I have always loved our vet - Dr Julie Morris at Animal Healing Arts in Carroll Gardens. In fact, one of the reason we bought our house was that we would still be able to walk to see her. She does not overmedicate or over vaccinate, has never tried to sell me anything (in fact, has recommended treatment elsewhere rather than getting herself lucrative drug sales), etc. She's wonderful. Has seen me through the decline and death of 2 very very dear kitties, and never once did I feel uncomfortable with her work or her choices.
