Today's FGVOTD was submitted by sixyearsandcounting.

Yesterday we had dirty hipster discussing being blitzed from too much tequila the night before.
Today we have The Sweet performing Ballroom Blitz.

And what is sweeter than a 1970's glam rock band?
This is my second favourite song with the word "blitz" in it, after Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones.

Thanks sixyears...

I have a hangover and am in a bad mood. People like randolph better watch out today. You wearing your thimble and your depends today, r???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:20 AM

I can't tell the sex of anyone in that video!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:21 AM

randolph, what were the final results in the PLUSA OT posting competition yesterday? I got very busy with work in the afternoon after a strong start and fell behind the others.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:21 AM

Who did you end up going to Jolie with yesterday Dave? Does it really stand up to Les Halles? I wanna check it one out of these days.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 9:23 AM

You posting as male or female today, randy???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:23 AM

If you like oysters, jolie on Atlantic Ave has $1.00 oysters every Wednesday.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:24 AM

randi, I, too, fell behind due to having some sort of Pathetic Loser life and being absent for a good part of the day. How did I rank? Likewise, I'll be out for a good part of today. I'm very concerned that I'm going to lose my PL status!

DIBS, what were you drinking this time?! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 7, 2009 9:25 AM

Kens...the steak tartare does. The chicken isn't great though. The rib eye is good as are the scallops. I like their cheese course for desssert. And the trio of flans is very good. The wine list is very reasonable (1/2 off on Tuesdays) and the Wed $1.00 oysters are always good and cold. I went with the Chinese bf.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:26 AM

Wine, connle, a nice french bordeaux. 2 bottles that I mostly drank myself (the Chinese bf doesn't drink a lot).

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:27 AM

cobble, not connle. ARgggghhhhh

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:28 AM

cobble, I read some of your posts regarding you entertaining the rugrat yesterday. It was very sweet. I'm keeping my eyes open when in CH for you and Better Half, who I always hope to run into. Went to Eton's Dumplings on Sackett (at Henry) last weekend with one of the champettes. It was really good. Have you tried it?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:28 AM

DIBS, isn't "Chinese bf" redundant in your case?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:29 AM

Kens...for all those great pork dishes, no one compares to Les halles.

Stuffed pigs trotters anyone?? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

But Les Halles is that typical VERY noisy Manhattan scene which I don't like.

Posted by: Legion at May 7, 2009 9:30 AM

DIBS, 2 bottles! Sounds yummy, and impressive, and you were able to walk/transport yourself home?

I'd need a stretcher myself! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 7, 2009 9:30 AM

He's the main one, Biff. Don't get me started. Cobble & THL won't like it.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:31 AM

Dave, I am not much of the oysters and steak tartare fan. I am more of the boring Steak Frites type. Do you think I'll like Jolie for that?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 9:32 AM

Speaking of Les Halles I read Bourdain's book not too long ago "Kitchen Confidential". Was VERY intertaining and actually a good read to my surprise.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 9:34 AM

Thanks for the video...that drummer is cuuuuute! But then again I'm partial to drummers. I love the vest he's wearing.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 9:37 AM

Likewise, Biff, we have an eye out for you and the Champettes! The rugrat is a pip! He's got a devilish sense of humor, too. Cracks us up!

We have not yet tried Eton, but it is high on our list. BH LOVES him some dumplings!

[It's ok DIBS, I have my hangover translator widget on today!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 7, 2009 9:37 AM

Kens...I like Tony. Did you know that the head chef there now started as an illegal Mexican dishwasher???!!! I will get his book.

Unfortunately, jolie's fries are nothing to rave about.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:37 AM

And Tony started his career as a line chef at The Lobster pot in Provincetown.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:38 AM

"But then again I'm partial to drummers"

rewrite>>>>>

But then again I'm partial to hummers.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:40 AM

if you want real variety and authentic cuisine, the only place to go is Queens.
Authentic Southern Chinese; Main street Flushing
Authentic Indian: 74th St. Jackson Heights
Authentic Colombian; Elmhurst
Authentic Carribean: Jamaica

all this talk about Michelin or NYTimes or Zagat's is nonsense. Unless of course you want to pay $389 for dinner, without tipping the sommelier.

Posted by: Legion at May 7, 2009 9:40 AM

cobble, you definitely should give it a try. One order had 5 or 6 large dumplings and was something like $3.50. The dipping sauce was delicious too. So you can have a nice lunch there at a very low price.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:41 AM

DIBS, come on, there's a better re-write than that...and a very naughty on indeed!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 9:43 AM

Who's talking about Michelin & Zagats legion???

I paid $160 for 2 with 2 bottles of wine. That said I'd gladly pay $500 at Le Grenouille. No one wants to spend his whole life eating in Flushing, Jackson Heights, Jamaica & Elmhurst.

Lift yourself up once in awhile.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:45 AM

"But then again I'm partial to drummers. I love the vest he's wearing."

Don't make me break out my drumming pics from the '90s with the feathered hair, the ripped jeans, the earrings and the leather vest that almost broke the needle on the Fromage-O-Meter!

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:47 AM

La Grenouille...the best dining experience in ALL of NYC...

http://www.la-grenouille.com/

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:47 AM

Actually Legion does make a good point. The best Chinese food in the city is on Main Street in Flushing.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:48 AM

Yeah DIBS he mentiones it in the book and he also talks a lot about Thailand and illegal Latinos working in his kitchens and how he'll take a Latino anyday over any of the trained culinary school chefs to work with in his kitchen.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 9:50 AM

I agree that the best Chinese food is in Flushing. Most of the places in Chinatown are crap. Best Latin is jackson heights, too.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:51 AM

DIBS,
sure, I went to Bouley a few times and recently to Blue Fin in Times Square and Vong is still quite good, but seriously, I can have a great Korean Barbecue in Sunnyside and use the $200 left over for Birdland and a Cohiba.

Posted by: Legion at May 7, 2009 9:52 AM

"Don't make me break out my drumming pics from the '90s"

What drummer?

"and the leather vest"

Can I see?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 9:54 AM

legion, there's a big difference between Korean barbecue (which is good) in Sunnyside and the best French cuisine with a rose filled room and one of the best wine list in the city.

I eat on the street in Thailand. that doesn't mean its a sustitute for the best restaurants in that city either.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:55 AM

Hi guys!
Where can I get some fresh lobsters in BK?
I tried that new place "Lobster Pound" in Red hook - however its only open Fri-Sun!!

Posted by: gemini10 at May 7, 2009 9:57 AM

The reason I don't like Bouley and Jean georges and Vong is because its all about the show and the noise. Yes, the food is good (not so much at Vong anymore) but the food, the wine and the service is not cntral to the experience anymore. It is at La grenouille. try it with a date sometime. She'll be very impressed.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:57 AM

gemini....Fish Tales on Court Street. Best fish in brooklyn, not the cheapest, but the best.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:58 AM

Legion, say what you will about Obama, but even you must be excited that his presidency might result in easier access to Cuban cigars. :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 9:59 AM

Its a store, not a restaurant if thats what you were looking for???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 9:59 AM

I have to go to Bay Ridge on Saturday.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:00 AM

DIBS,
LeBernadin was excellent for a night out, no doubt. But I found myself stopping off at Gray's Papaya later in the evening.
The fine dining experience is certainly a thrill but making an inexpensive neighborhood place the routine is much more fulfilling.
Ask Bourdain, that's what his No Reservations is all about.
There used to be an excellent German place on Metropoltan in Ridgewood ; Neidersteins, a hundred years old, now it's an Arbys.
sad.

Posted by: Legion at May 7, 2009 10:01 AM

"I have to go to Bay Ridge on Saturday."

Thanks for the warning. I'll put on my plastic pumps and high tail it outta there.

Biff, be ready for the culture shock. You may never be the same again!

Cuban cigars, "rolled on the hips of virgins",

that's a good smoke.

"The fine dining experience is certainly a thrill but making an inexpensive neighborhood place the routine is much more fulfilling."

I'm with Legion on this one!
Too bad all the inexpensive nabe places that I regularly frequent aren't in my nabe!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 10:07 AM

I agree, legion, these place i speak of are not weekly jaunts. A great pork tamale with a Pacifico is as satisfying as a plate of truffled wild boar pappardelle with an expensive Amarone..

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:07 AM

I loved Mexico. Probably one of the last few civilized places on earth where you can have dinner in a 5 star restaurant and there's a cigar lady walking around with Cohibas to smoke at the table after dessert.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:08 AM

"I have to go to Bay Ridge on Saturday."

Biff decided that after yesterday underwear conversation, he has to go to Century to buy another 99 pairs of underwear to catch up to you ladies. :o)

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 10:09 AM

Dibs - Thanks!
yes I need a store that I can buy fresh lobsters to cook... but will they kill them for me there?!?!?!
checked out their website and it doesn't mention they sell fresh lobsters

Truly stellar, but yes, a little pricey at times.

Any other Cobble Hillers reading here? Anyone know about the partial building collapse over between Marquet/ closer to Joya?

Posted by: the chicken at May 7, 2009 10:10 AM

"Cuban cigars, "rolled on the hips of virgins""

DIBS likes to roll his cigar on the virgin hips of Cubans.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:10 AM

gemini...They have a lobster tank as you walk in the door. I don't know but I assume they will cook them for you as well as they also have prepared dishes...Pick up a few tubs of their gumbo...its great.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:11 AM

Kensingtonian, funny, but not quite true. The C21 downtown is very close to the Death Star and I could go there if I really wanted to (and try to avoid the swinging elbows of tourists and locals on their lunch break).

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:13 AM

Morning fellow PLs! What's the good word for the day? And don't say lobster...lobster is yucky.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 10:14 AM

Legion,

If you are saving money by going chowhound rather than gourmet, why aren't you doing the same with jazz? Lots of good places to hear great music without coughing up all that dough at Birdland.

* * *

In other news . . . .

Chicken, you were name-checked in Doonesbury today.

Oh, and some humorless poster took a belated swipe at me in the Lis Pendens forum thread (scroll way down) because I tried to have some mild snarky fun at BHO's expense. Grrr. Not worth a response.

P.S. Would love to see pix of you in your drummer gear and outfit, Biff. My daughter is studying drums and I want to know what to expect.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 7, 2009 10:14 AM

Biff...I had a Cuban bf back in Chicago in the 80s. He's now a nationally renowned architect and owns a mansion on Astor Street. Oh well.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:14 AM

Jordan's Lobster House on Flatbush has a great lobster roll, it's way the heck on the other end of the avenue, next stop is the Marine Park bridge and the Atlantic.

slopefarm, I better not; you would never allow her to continue to play. I have electronic drums at my place in Brooklyn and I would highly recommend them if your daughter is serious about playing. They sound great and keep the noise way way down. You can get ones with pads that actually have almost the same feel as the skins on a traditional kit.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:27 AM

Snark, very funny!

A friend just sent me this Facebook status from another friend.

"Getting out the subway heading to work. At the bottom of the last stairwell a guy leaning on the rail (1) + a well-dressed guy (2) standing with him. Asked if everything ok. 2 says 1 thinks he broke some ribs. Pain on coughing and a little short of breath. We suggest the ER as it's right around the corner. As we reach street level 1 says "Wait, I have to get coffee first. It's cheaper out here than in the hospital!""

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:29 AM

What happened last week? Sounds ominous...

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 7, 2009 10:40 AM

Ok...hold on....

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 10:40 AM

Ok, I spoke to wasder and he said he's too busy right now to organize his photo show at Outpost and to go ahead without him. As such, I was thinking of moving the next gathering up to June 3 or June 4. I'm also thinking of having it at Brooklyn Public House now and will talk to them about their space and date suggestions (i.e., if a Wednesday is better than Thursday as it's apparently becoming a popular hang out).

Are people ok with June 3 or June 4 and the venue?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:41 AM

Uh-oh, gotta run.

Randi, can you get my counts together. I know I'm running behind, I want to catch up tomorrow!

Ok...I just sent you a response.

Dave? Hello? Are you hiring? I'm not much of a pool boy, but I can try :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 10:43 AM

Yes, Biff...and i get to walk by that captains house on the corner of lafayette & vanderbilt.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:44 AM

June 3rd may be easier as that is mobbed on Thursday nights.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 7, 2009 10:46 AM

Thanks DeLepp. I'll call them to discuss it. Do you have any other suggestions? I ixnayed Outpost. Heather also suggested Mandiba and Speakeasy. Lox is also in the mix but seems potentially noisy. I don't know the nabe at all so I need assistance. Does Brooklyn Public House have outdoor space? Decent space, less noise, outdoor space and a good drink selection would be ideal.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:50 AM

Got the email, Snappy. Another time ;-)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 10:50 AM

Both dates are bad for me.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 7, 2009 10:52 AM

What neighborhood are all of these places in?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 10:53 AM

Sorry, Snappy, not hiring. Mexican bf's hours were cut back so he's on the payroll now!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 10:58 AM

"What neighborhood are all of these places in?"

A neighborhood with a bunch of Asshats living there!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 10:58 AM

Bif, Public House doesn't have outdoor space and Madiba may be tight as they don't really have much of a bar. 7 has some decent area around the bar, though 30+ people will be tight.
How about Downtown Atlantic? May be roomiest of the bunch.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 7, 2009 10:59 AM

Clinton Hill, Snappy. It's for all the folks from Crown Heights, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and Bed Stuy who are regulars here but haven't had a gathering that close to their hood, which is why I really want to have a workable date and good place.

slopefarm, that's a bummer. I want you to be there. wasder can't make the next week. Would May 27 or May 28 be too soon? Should we stick with June 18?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 10:59 AM

BIF, or Social on Smith.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 7, 2009 11:00 AM

Pick something *very* close to a train or bus and I'll be there, even if all you asshats will show up as well :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 7, 2009 11:01 AM

Downtown Atlantic is more of a restaurant and probably won't want a large noisy crowd. Not enough room around the tables.

Floyds was fine except for the weird sofa and table placement making it difficult for a group to talk. lets not repeat that layout.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 11:02 AM

DeLepp, thanks again. I'm really aiming for Clinton hill so Brooklyn Social might be a good choice for the one after the next one. Downtown Atlantic is also walking distance for me, so I like the thought of it, but wrong location for others.

Outpost has outdoor space and is in Clinton Hill but has a limited drink selection and early closing. I'm now leaning more and more towards Brooklyn Public House despite the lack of outdoor space unless people have a better idea. And what about May 27 or 28 versuss June 18?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 11:05 AM

I get back from P-Town on the 26th...no problem but woyuld rather do it a week later.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 7, 2009 11:07 AM

Now I have to look at my calendar?
It doesn't matter to me...if I'm here and free, I'll show up if not, have fun.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 11:12 AM

Seems like it'll be hard to work it for DIBS, wasder and slopefarm. slopefarm, let me know if you can do it May 27 or May 28. I'm waiting to hear back from wasder too about it. If that works, let's move it to then. Sorry DIBS, but I think that's the only choice that might work for all three of you.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 11:14 AM

Biff...NOOOOO!!! Please not those dates. I'll be out of the country and only coming back on the 4th. Maybe the following week pretty please?

Snappy, you live right next to me. If the place is not by the train or bus, I can pick you up on my hoopty.

Biff 27th I can make it but 28th I'll be on a beach in Dominican with a good book in one hand and a margarita in another.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 7, 2009 11:22 AM

Kens, so maybe May 27 is good. I know you want to attend so will try to accomodate your schedule.
slopefarm, can you confirm? If wasder gives the thumbs up, it'll be a go.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 11:25 AM

Snappy, and of course I'll offer you a ride if I'm going with the jalopy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 11:26 AM

Kens, we can also do a more spontaneous, smaller gathering of PLUSAs later on in June. We don't have to wait that long to have drinks with friends. That gives me an idea for the name of the next drinkup! LollaPLUSA!

By the way, are any PLUSAs going to Blogfest in DUMBO tonight or at least for drinks afterwards at the after party? It feels a bit Star Trek conventionish, but maybe it would be fun?

BIF, there is also Moes on Lafayette in FG. Large space. CH places tend to be small.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 7, 2009 11:33 AM

May 27-28 is doubtful for me but not out of the question. If it works all around, go with it. Otherwise, I was good for 6/18.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 7, 2009 11:35 AM

Thanks DeLepp. Let's consider that for next time.

Ok, the final answer is let's stick to either June 17 or June 18 then as that seems to work for wasder, Kens, DIBS, slopefarm, etc. We can have an impromptu gathering before that if people are interested.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 11:42 AM

Any of those dates work for me, Biff. And what's this about a Blogfest afterparty tonight?

Anyone get caught in the monsoon last night without an umbrella?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 7, 2009 11:45 AM

It's obvious that some people are itching to get together sooner than later and more frequently. Coordinating schedules is always tough.
You all should get together once a month; ie. Third Wednesday of the Month. Whoever shows up, shows up. It'll be like a fraternity or the Knights of Columbus.
You can call it Asshats of Brownstoner (AofB). You can sip drinks, play cards, smoke cigars, talk about other Asshats.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 11:46 AM

Yeah - even though I haven't participated in any of these shindigs, i think the once a month idea is good.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 7, 2009 11:50 AM

BRG, that's a great idea. How about a get together next Thursday?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 11:53 AM

"i think the once a month idea is good."

Okay, I was kidding...but run with it.
Only if we all wear matching T-shirts that say 'I'm with Asshat'
We should get a club house.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 11:55 AM

We should buy one of those horrorshow friday places and turn it into a "pathetic loser" flophouse.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 7, 2009 12:00 PM

"BRG, that's a great idea."

OMG, I really was kidding about the once a month...but do it.
You should do different things every month.
Bowling - different teams. Assheads vs. Asshats
Movies
Picnic in the Park
People can bring spouses and children if they like.

Hi guys! I'm looking for the Retard named "Dave". He's lives in Bed Stuy and like to have large objects rammed up his ass! If you see him please explain why Quantitative Easing is not fucking working out!

Quantitative easing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_easing

The term quantitative easing refers to the creation by a central bank of a pre-determined quantity of new money ex nihilo as the start of a process to increase the country's money supply. This new money is injected into the private banking system by using it to purchase government securities and crediting the bank accounts of the vendors of those securities (a process called open market operations). Quantitative easing can basically be understood as a method of 'printing money' although today the new money is generally created electronically rather than physically printed.[1] The usual method of increasing the money supply is by decreasing the interest rates at which the central bank lends to private banks and the monetary policy of quantitative easing is usually only applied when the interest is at or close to zero and there's still not enough money in circulation to stimulate the economy.

The 30 year Bond Action was a fucking disaster today and the yields on the 10 and 30 year Bonds are imploding right this very minute and guess what happens to Mortgage rates??? They go up and the equity on your **Cough** Investment goes Ker-Boom!!!

This f*cker is the 1st car in the turning only lane and decides he’s going to sit there and monitor the corner. I go around the police car sitting on my horn the entire time!!!!!!!

Sam, you can have my gay card. But try explaining why there's a black woman's photo on it when you present it to get in certain places! LOL

Darn, I got caught out in the rain and missed the whole rain convo. I would list "Here Comes the Rain Again" (listened to it on the way home), "November Rain," Led Zeppelin's "Rain Song," "Like the Deserts Miss the Rain," CCR's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

Oh, and a shoutout to my glamrock years in junior high: Whitesnake, "Crying in the Rain"!

I'll add one vote for November Rain (GnR), Kiss the rain (Billie Myer's one hit), and Queen of Rain (Roxette).

Quick art recommendation. Mrs Chicken went to the Whitney to see the Jenny Holzer exhibition (Protect Protect) and she said it was very good.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 7, 2009 5:37 PM

I did a search for "rain" in my media player. How could I forget "It Never Rains" by Dire Straits?

Posted by: the chicken at May 7, 2009 5:38 PM

Randi...you should have waited, another PLUSA showed up.

bxgrl - 1

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 7, 2009 5:38 PM

Posted by: bxgrl at May 7, 2009 5:55 PM

Bxgrl....maybe tomorrow Randi will get it right and submit the spreadsheet after 6pm.
