Today's FGVOTD follows on the heels of a hip hop discussion in yesterday's Open Thread.
This video features Marvin Young, better known as Young MC, who was born in England and raised in Queens. From Wiki:
In 1989, Young rose to prominence with his hit "Bust a Move"...which won the second (and last ever) Grammy Award for "Best Rap Recording" at the 1990 Grammy Awards, during the golden age of hip hop. His Grammy acceptance speech was interrupted by Flavor Flav of fellow nominees Public Enemy, who ran on stage and mockingly congratulated him for his win. The bass line of the song was provided by Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame, with backing vocals sung by Stevie Wonder's studio background vocalist Crystal Blake...In addition to producing the hit "Bust a Move", Young MC was also an accomplished songwriter, having co-written the hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" for Tone Loc.

"Keyed Car Incident" thread in Forum might be fun.

Indeed, especially after yesterday's Clinton Hill too white thread.

DIBS, think I'm giving some great advice on that car forum.
Posted by: more4less at May 5, 2009 9:27 AM
Dibs - I thought the same thing - but come on - it's an old lady
Biff - thanks for this I had no idea he was born in the UK - good trivia!!!

Mornin' Asshats! Thanks for the nod to the Hip Hop discussion Biffy :)
Dave, I read your response on that keyed car post...funny!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 5, 2009 9:28 AM
gemini10, after the stunt that lady pulled, "old" is not good enough reason to let her off the hook cause she's acting like a child.
Posted by: more4less at May 5, 2009 9:29 AM
m4l - aw man come on! have a heart!
I picture this little old lady who is like 70 and can barely move around(sure there's an argument here maybe she shouldn't drive) trying to park and this young "newbie" robs her of the spot to be venegful and "teach that old lady a lesson". Sure the little old lady was rude or nuts to take the spot away in the first place, but come on!
hahaha that person got what they bargained for I suppose. am sure that old lady is old school brooklyn

SNAPPY:
If you still have those nicotine patches i want them. I called 311 yesterday to get mine and they said they will be delivered in 2-3 weeks. that is too long. I actually NEED to stop smoking ASAP for various reasons. I have enough smokes to last me til thursday morning but i don't get paid til monday :-/ and im googling food pantries to get free food. if ever someone wakes up and realizes a stupid nasty smelly addiction is making them live in poverty it's this. Good luck NYC btw... by raising the stupid taxes on cigarettes and making them 10 bux a pack (btw i have a black market dealer who sells me them for 7 but even at 7 im struggling) you are shooting yourself in the foot. Nice way to implement a poor tax. Nice way to make someone want to rob someone for a damn Newport.
I've officially had enough. I didn't even touch my first cigarette until i was 22. TWENTY TWO! i was against cigarettes and alcohol, etc, everything. i was hardcore straightedge for the first 21 years of my life. what kind of idiot starts smoking at 22? so now it's been 10 years and i am convinced i have lung cancer (my grandfather and mother died of it), and im terrified to go to the doctor until i quit officially. I've noticed that doctors in general are nasty when you tell them you are a smoker.
I was afraid of quitting smoking since all of my friends smoke and my roommate and his boyfriend smoke all the time in the apartment, but i think im at the point where im like whatever smoke as much as you want i dont want that anymore.
im afraid of getting fatter tho :(

"Good luck NYC btw... by raising the stupid taxes on cigarettes and making them 10 bux a pack .... you are shooting yourself in the foot."
Rob, I think it is working, they want you to quit:
"Tax increases are the single most effective way to help smokers quit. When New York State’s cigarette tax rose by $1.25 per pack last year (from $1.50 to $2.75), the jolt prompted more than 2,700 calls to 311 for help to quit over the course of one week – three times the number of calls during the same period in the prior year. New York City has 300,000 fewer adult smokers today than in 2002 – thanks in part to price increases – and smoking has dropped 52 percent among public high school students since 2001."

wow this scares me from reading the website...
***
In New York City, one of the richest cities in the world, food poverty is around every corner. Throughout the five boroughs, approximately 1.3 million people — largely comprised of women, children, seniors, the working poor and people with disabilities — rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. In addition, the number of New Yorkers experiencing difficulty affording food for themselves and their families has doubled to approximately four million since 2003.
Food poverty in New York City results from problems affording or accessing needed food. Low-income New Yorkers often have to make choices between providing enough food for themselves or their families and paying the month's rent or utility bills. With food prices steadily rising, difficulty affording groceries among New Yorkers with already stretched budgets has reached crisis levels. The steadily rising cost of living is also being felt by middle-income New Yorkers, who are increasingly experiencing difficulty affording food. Meanwhile, a number of financial pressures — including health issues, health insurance issues and low wages — continue to affect New Yorkers with low to moderate incomes.
In addition to financial problems, low-income neighborhoods throughout New York City are characterized by a lack of affordable, nutritious food. Add to that equation chronically stretched budgets and the prevalence of low-cost, low-quality food and it is easy to understand the challenges of leading a truly healthy lifestyle in many neighborhoods — which lead to high concentrations of diet-related conditions such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension

DH just suggested peanut butter under the car door handles....if you really wanna be mean, use doggie poo!
(I can't believe I just suggested that!)

haha - i just realized they might have a really bad peanut allergy NOT GOOD!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 5, 2009 9:48 AM
Rob, are you out of food? Call 311 to get the names and addresses and operating times of food pantries nearest to your home. I think there are 2 in PS on 7th Ave that work out of churches. And, you are more than welcome to come over to my house for a steak and potato dinner this Friday night :) I'll even have a 40 chilling for you in the fridge.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 5, 2009 9:49 AM
You can go to this place in the East Village for food. Though it seems, the pantry isn't open on the first Saturday of month :(
"Guests are also encouraged to take part in our food pantry program, which supplies emergency food in grocery bags. As an EFP, emergency food pantry, we distribute grocery bags to those who are referred to us by NYC’s Hunger Hotline and anyone who comes to our door. "

Peanut allergies are more common in little kids...not the elderly...stick with the dog poo for the super gross out factor!

a good one for summer time (continuing on the keyed car) is piss into the car grill. The car cant be driven for a while - at least A/C cant be turned on unless you don't mind the smell

jessibaby, nyc shouldnt have to HELP ME or MAKE ME quit. i enjoy smoking. immensely. i know it has health risks, but i have no kids and no family under the age of 73 so what does it matter? i look at it like nyc being a dickbag telling me i shouldnt do something but if i do i have to pay crazy ass taxes to do it? i like smoking! hells most of native american culture was centered around smoking. im keeping it real! so now because of the ridiculous tax increases i have to stop? like patsy from ab fab says, TAX THE STUPID PEOPLE! put a tax on dumb girls with oversized sunglasses and poodles in their bags, put a tax on men who dress like women with tight short cut off denim jeans flip flops and tote bags, put a tax on doublewise strollers, just leave us smokers who enjoy our habit alone! im not out puffing in peoples faces or anything. grrrrrrrr
i am SO angry today. and the thought that i have to quit my favorite habit (other than bean bagging) out of economic necessity makes me a very angry boy.

Cats? Gemini, this one's for you...
I cleaned my house this weekend and my cat, Pia, decided a little something was missing from the living room. She has a fetish for dirty clothes. She went into the bedroom, dove into the laundry bag and came back to the living room with her favorite find. She situated herself with her treasure on the back of the sofa. I then realized what she had...MY BRA! Check out the photo:

haha I agree with you Rob. Or tax fast food, as more people die from heart disease every year then lung cancer.
Just leave the cigarettes and alcohol alone.

M4L not into the car grill. Pissing into the vents on the outside of the front windshield is WAY more effective.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 5, 2009 10:08 AM
Rob - seriously if you want to keep smoking and don't have the hookup to get out of state cartons - try rolling your own. It's like five bucks for a big pouch of rolling tobacco and like a buck for rolling papers. Even though they are unfiltered they don't have all the additives your newports do, and since they are harsh you'll smoke alot less.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 5, 2009 10:09 AM
Thanks Gemini - that's my baby!
BRG, I'm telling your hubby on you!!!

Rob, did you read the articles about rent parties coming back?
Maybe you should throw a rent roof top party at your place and invite all your facebook and brownstoner friends, provide 40s and charge 5-10 bucks admission? I am sure you can make some money with that and maybe even make it a monthly thing and subsidize a second income.

I get mine from an Indian reservation out west. They can't ship to NY state so they go to a pal who forwards them to me. Even w/ all the shipping, they're under $20 a carton!

this is going to sound really weird, but i like the additives in cigarettes i think more than the tobacco itself. ive tried rolled cigarettes. they taste like dirt. like im smoking potting soil. newports taste unorganic and very synthetic. that's why i like them and crave them so much. remember back in the day people would say that newports contained fiber glass? lol. they probably do!
even when i tried the patch last time i was still smoking during the day and using the patch to get wacky dreams :-/

There were at least 33 folks at the last gathering. wasder was going to try to do an art show at Outpost at the same time as the gathering, which I think would be great, but I'm just not sure the limited drink selection and early closing at Outpost makes it as desirable as Brooklyn Public House. i was going thru some old journals last night and found out that i got my dog on july 15th of 2004 and the woman i got him from said he was three. so his 9th birthday is coming up. im thinking about giving him a surprise party (have my roommate walk him for 1/2 an hour) and set up inside the apartment. i know it will rile him up and he will probably bite someones nose with all the commotion, but he will like it. he loves opening presents. there is a video of him from 2 x'mas's ago of him opening up his gifts :) if anyone wants to watch... ugh the video is gone from youtube :( it wasnt on my account it was on my ex boyfriends account. looks like he deleted his account. :(

BRG knows what I am talking about. I worked in plenty of Bay Ridge clubs/bars (Legacy, Rio, Gazibo) back in college so I know exactly what the crowd looks like.

Please, he's more likely to hear from Benson than BRG.
The code of ethics according to Benson clearly states it's verboten to mention anything remotely relating to anything Italian, no matter how obscure the reference may be. Unless of course it's a positive statement. Then he's very welcoming and open to it.

Yes it's very scary! The funny thing is most of the retards don't know about the Real New York and someone is going to get hurt. I noticed that Jon has taken a very negative tone this week! Rob, you're not missing much in my opinion. I went once and was not impressed at all. Innovative italian food but nothing to rave about.

I won't go to a restaurant that doesn't take resevations unless I'm assured of a seat in 15 minutes or so. Its just not worth it and they do a disservice to their customers.

al di la is wildly overrated imho. when you tell a park sloper they have no real good stand out restaurants - they will always throw al di la and blue ribbon in your face (blue ribbon is also overrated and overpriced)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 5, 2009 2:12 PM
is blue ribbon the sushi place that is near there? i ate at some sushi place around there when i first moved in. i have no opinion on the food because i dont have much of a palate really.

There are many relatively unknown great Italian restaurants all over that have got to be better than this place. They are the ones that I miss having left Mnahattan...Cantina Toscan on the UES with baby eels, asparagus sformatills (sp?), pappardelle with wild boar ragu. Gimmie a break
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 5, 2009 2:19 PM

al di la is like 2 blocks up from that.

If anyone wants to know why I don't post on the open thread anymore, look no further than today's thread. I've been refraining from posting, but yesterday jumped in to offer some advice to a person in distress. The follow-up? See above. You can't win when your dealing with a clique.
Fire away at 11217 and me, if you wish. All I know is that guys like him, Polemecist, Dittoburg and others made this site interesting, and they are disappearing one-by-one.
Posted by: benson at May 5, 2009 2:21 PM
Benson, have you done any modeling in your youth?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 5, 2009 2:32 PM
Benson, I am not part of any "clique" and you don't see people "firing" at me. If you are going to be stating in the restaurant review forums how good looking you are and how you get to go in front of the line because of that at some overrated restaurant, you deserve everything that's coming to you. Expect to be called out and mocked. This is not TMZ or a gossip blog. This is a real community blog and no one likes a show off or someone who acts like they are above someone else. That's Brooklyn for you.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 5, 2009 2:36 PM

Don't worry, I'm sure that was directed at me Ken...
Benson,
Not that I was asking for advise (it was more of an aggravated rant) but yes, your post was I'm sure helpful to some and I responded in kind.
Today, merely stating factual information gathered through first hand experience.
That's all.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 5, 2009 2:41 PM
Kens, I agree with Benson on this with 11217. When 11217 starts something on a particular thread, handle your business there & then until the next encounter triggering another response. for example, when WHAT comes after me, I fight back there & then but I leave him alone when he isn't bothering me. In this case, 11217 didn't come after us TODAY.
11217's park slope bias doesn't bother me. I really find it entertaining when I debate him or he debate others. I really miss his presence. When he goes too far, set him straight right there & then (ie as happened with his unemploymt remarks to CH)
People take their positions way too seriously here and get way too involved in trying to convince others to agree. This is a freaking blog - mainly for entertainment purposes. Be a smart reader - filter out what's good, bad, to-be-ignored, etc.
Benson, you need to chill a little and post more often cause as a lurker then I found your posts very interesting reading and sometimes educational.

Kensingtonian, are you sure that was me? I don't think I was on Cortelyou at all on Sunday. Maybe you're spying on someone else!
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 5, 2009 2:55 PM
You know what else. You're an incredibly intellectual person who often provides amazing insight into things in which I have no experience or knowledge of. That side of you I really enjoy.
The other side. Not so much. You're very self important and require entirely too much coddling. Beside the fact that you're threatened to leave or cease posting on more than a few occasions yet you never seem to. You just lurk and pounce when you get prodded.
Quit crying, leave or stay but stop sitting on the fence post complaining it's uncomfortable.

Posted by: East New York at May 5, 2009 2:56 PM
M4L I agree with you. I don't oppose some of 11217's threads and I do find Benson's posts useful as well.
I just don't see anything wrong with mocking someone who starts to go off on how good looking they are when the Forum is MEANT for Restuarant recommendations. Just say something along the lines of "I don't know about you guys but I never had to wait more then 15 minutes in line at Al Di La" and go on your merry way and no one will mock you.
Look I love where I live, so do many people who post on here. Nothing wrong with commenting on the love for your hood but when you say how great a 100 sq. foot box is for $1,000,000 you have to be able to support your opinion with a little more than "well it's in 11217 so anything there is God's gift to real estate and supports those prices".
for example, both DIBS and ENY love BedStuy and you see them rarely saying that a particular house in their hood justifies the price that it is listed at, and when they do say it, they have plenty of information and data backing their point.

Maybe if your plastic pumps are on a foot high platform and you can be 6'4 in them, you might have a shot.

M4L, that is the best gift of all.
What are you giving Mrs. M4L?
BRG, did you have your little glass baby booties bronzed?

I have no clue where you emigrated from, m4l. Nothing in the way you post has given away any Britishisms or any other malarky. Somebody used the word "mobile" earlier. If that was you, you're from the UK, Australia, NZ or Asia.
Give me some clues...do you come from a land where 110/120v or 220v is used? Is your surname monosyllabic or multisyllabic? Does it end in a vowel??

Noooooo! We had them shellaced!

M4L I actually dont do much of ,y work in excel, well at least I don't do any VB lookups or macros or anything fancy like that (eventhough I really need to learn and master it so any book recommendations for that would be appreciated).
My work is more analysis based where I look at the numbers and reports and see what story it tells about the industry and business overall.

""BRG, I gave my wife and mother the gift the keeps on giving - a bouncing baby boy."

Isn't an actuary someone who found accounting too exciting?
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 5, 2009 3:34 PM
Yes, I was thinking that, m4l but I didn't want it to be such a gross stereotype. So you ARE Asian. Chinese (and from what part of the diaspora), Thai, Malay, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Indian subcontinent????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 5, 2009 3:35 PM
I always assumed M4L was Asian, but don't know where I got that impression from.

First part is right, second, no so much. I have nothing to do with stocks, bonds or anything like like that. I am in consumer products.

Actuaries usually work for insurance companies and they are the ones that calculate all of those complex insurance policies, annuities and other variable crap. It's basically a very complex and high level of math.
I should know, I am related to one who is a lurker on this site.

m4l...but I suspect you've been in the US for quite some time. I grew up in upstate NY, moved to Chicago in '78 for grad school and stayed there until 1994. Lived in HK in 1991-1994 and then moved to NYC. Only been in brooklyn since May, 2007.

An actuary is a risk accountant, mainly working in the insurance or pensions industry. If an accountant is a GP then they would be the equivalent of a specialist or surgeon.

BTW, I do say "mobile" instead of "cellphone"

m4l do you have a carrying case for your "mobile" and is it attached to your belt or is that taking the stereotype a bit too far?? :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 5, 2009 4:47 PM
"cellphone" is old school tech - ie those analog brick size phones
"mobile" is correct & popular term once tech went to all DIGITAL
dont need case - got a tiny one that can be slipped in easily.
