Did you see *this*? Cops stopping people in East New York just because it's a high crime area -- and only 10 percent actually get arrested. Now....I'm in favor of stopping crime, but that sounds madly unfair to me.

For anyone who needs a real pick me up FGVOTD today, this one should do the trick.

Mr. Armstrong, whose grandparents were slaves, grew up in virtual poverty in New Orleans and had an extremely turbulent childhood. He overcame all that and went on to become one of the most beloved musical legends of all time.

morning all,
I like to continue the chat from late last night if I may.
Your thoughts please.

Here's a cowboy story for you: My landlady paid $2,000 (labor) for her contractor to install a new kitchen, refinish the floors, and paint my apartment.

The apartment is probably 800 square feet, and the kitchen is a galley side kitchen but the work involved installing about nine linear feet of cabinets, granite tile counter and backsplash with contrast tile, and a tile floor. Painting included contrast trim.

Talk about a deal. Half the grout fell out a week later, and six months later the floors have no more polyurethane on them.

Kitchen still looks pretty good though.

Isn't that a crazy price? Poor contractor, he must be more than half way to the poor house by now.

Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 10:23 PM

And she'll probably keep our $2,000 security deposit when we move -- on account of the missing polyurethane, which is entirely her fault -- and make back all the money.

Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 10:24 PM

mopar, that sounds about right by London standards if you're not paying a middleman although depends how much prep work involved for the painting.

remove old kitchen - 1/2 day
install new kitchen - 1 day (add 1/2 day if carcasses need building up)
tiling and prep - 1 day
painting prep, undercoat and topcoat - 4 days
Total = 1 week

The grouting problem is because he used cheap grout and not enough of it - which is stupid because even the good stuff is fairly cheap and no more difficult to use the right amount.

He's chosen the wrong PU sealer or applied it incorrectly - again would not have cost much more to do it right.

Sounds like he was a general labourer that needed a bit of direction. Day rate of $250 x 7 = $1,750. Add in another day of contingency and you are there. Not good if you are paying taxes on it but not bad for cash in hand.

Posted by: the chicken at May 1, 2009 3:40 AM

Very interesting, chicken, about the costs and the grout.

Don't forget the floors. Maybe a day to sand and put down the first coat, then two more days to put down more coats and dry? He was late and in a rush so he put down only one coat as far as I know, then covered the whole thing with paper before it was dry so we could move in the next day.

I've been quoted $2,000 just to do polyurethane, I've never heard of anyone installing a whole kitchen for less than $2,000 (but now that I think of it, maybe that included all the materials), and I've certainly met a lot of painters who would like to think they should get $2,000 to paint an 800-sf apt.

Posted by: mopar at May 1, 2009 9:16 AM

Posted by: the chicken at May 1, 2009 9:48 AM

mopar- I'll be interested to see how that plays out in court since there's already litigation. I still find it appalling that someone sitting on a milk crate was given a ticket and that a young, pregnant girl was given one for sitting on the subway steps for a moment.

DIBS, driving to NJ is a lot easier now. the traffic is super light - side effects of the massive layoffs in this area. Not kidding, I now view the traffic load as an indicator of how econ is doing in the area.

$2,000 for PUing the floor sounds like chancing to me. The problem is that most people don't know how straightforward it is. Polyurethane is cheap - even for the good stuff so most of that is labour.

How long does it take to apply and how difficult is it? See here:

U.S. Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index Rises to 65.1 in April
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Bob Willis

May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Confidence among U.S. consumers rose in April to its highest since before the collapse of credit late last year unleashed a financial panic that sent the economy into a freefall.

The Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment rose to 65.1, the second straight gain, from 57.3 in March. The index reached a three-decade low of 55.3 in November.

Record low mortgage rates, cheap gasoline and surging stock prices are providing some relief to the beleaguered American consumer in the face of mounting unemployment and tumbling home prices. Improved confidence may keep consumers spending, helping to pull the economy out of its slump in the second half of the year.

“The shell-shocked consumer of late last year is feeling a little calmer nerves and a little more willing and able to spend,” Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group Inc. in Pittsburgh, said before the report.

Economists projected the sentiment index would rise to 61.9, according to the median of 52 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Forecasts ranged from 57.3 to 63.

They interview people from Dave's office for this survey!

Speaking of Bridges.
I loooooove bridges. I’m very fascinating/intrigued by them. I don’t pass a bridge without stopping and to look at the construction. I see suspension cable and I swoon. Show me rivets and I’m ecstatic. I love all types; suspension, arch, truss, etc.

I also love to walk over bridges. I’ve walked over quiet a few.
In NYC:
Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, 59th Street, Bridge that connects Manhattan to Riverdale (don’t know name, it has really pretty iron work btw), George Washington (my favorite to walk)

Here are the bridges, I’ve yet to walk:
Randall’s Island, Willis Ave. Bridge, Tri-borough (I think is walkable)

Which bridges are walkable in New York City that I’m missing?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 1, 2009 10:40 AM

BRG,
Don't think you are missing anything in not walking the Willis Ave bridge - short and ugly and doesn't connect to anywhere that interesting (for drivers - real good alternative to paying the toll on the Triborough, for now).
I think most of the bridges up the Harlem River that connext Manhattan to the BX are walkable, and some of them connect interesting areas. There must be 5-6 at least.

24 million Americans are either un- or underemployed. "Consumer confidence" is reflecting the fact that retailers are slashing prices to move the merch...even as they continue to go under. That's not "confidence," Dibs, that is switching seats on the Titanic.

Posted by: bridges at May 1, 2009 11:39 AM

Battlestar Galactica discussion from the Wmsburg thread:

cmu, my biggest problem with the finale was the absurd thought that these thousands of people were going to walk off into the veldt with no technology whatsoever. The funniest thing I read on the subject was on the BSG official forum, where someone said something to the effect of - one lion says to another, hey, look, all these people just landed and are now wandering off with nothing. Smorgasbord!

That and the idea that little Hera, who was played up from day one as the most important person in the universe, dies early and becomes Mitochondrial Eve. Makes no sense.

There were some good parts, such as the death scene with Adama and Laura, but I was let down that most of that dramatic build up went nowhere. Reminded me of some of Stephen King's novels like It and Tommyknockers, where you have a great dramatic and scary build up, only to find the creepy spider alien hiding in the sewer. Booo.

Galactica finale must have been written by a special end of series committee, cheaply paid. For a show that was so richly textured and complex, the finale felt like a throwaway. The entire Hera story line was a waste. I did find it interesting though, how Starbuck's Cylon husband became such an integral character at the, but thought the whole Saul and his wife thing stupid.

Posted by: bxgrl at May 1, 2009 12:56 PM

how is stop and frisk constitutional?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 1, 2009 12:56 PM

OK: here it is:

After 3 seasons of probably the best writing/effect/tangled lives/dark scenes of any TV how, the last 1/2 doz episodes I thought were writers frantically trying to tie up all the plot threads together. And they failed miserably.

What about Starbuck? A frakking corporeal angel who doesn't even know why she's there or what she knows? And was she or not Daniel's daughter? And do we care if it isn't mundane to the story?

The whole opera-house-in-BSG thing!!! WOuldn't it have MUCH more sense if that overlaid the cylon base instead...all that running around would've made much more sense.

Poor Tory (a little ethinc idendification aside,) Chief going beserk and killing her was...Stupid!? In the middle of them saving all of humanity he can't stop himself?

And the actual ending...destroying all the technology was perhaps the weirdest action they could do. Besides...why was it Lee-pretty-boy's call? No holdouts among the other 49,212 souls? All in agreement that they'd live on agonizingly with no medicines, no machines, no algae food and no means of transport on a hostile planet? No wonder they all died out.

And as for Mitochondrian Eve...let's just say the writers either don't know s&&t about biological evolution or they assumed the viewers wouldn't.

And that's just for starters.

Posted by: cmu at May 1, 2009 12:57 PM

The first season of BSG was so damn good.

The last season was awful.

The finale was a trainwreck.

I think all the good writers left after the first season or two.

I'm still lost in the Opera House looking for Hera- and wondering why I am. BTW- did anyone else wind up thinking Adama was an evil shadow of his former self? He lost his whole moral compass and finally came off as venal and weak. That completely wrecked the core of the show.

yes, the Slopians are a little afraid of being underwater, figuratively and literally, besides if they crossed the river they would face the Montclairian barbarians, the rulers of a vast forest empire. Their land is too remote and wild to interest the Slopian senate.

On the southeastern front, the Slopian hordes will get lost in the impregnable mansions of Victorian Flatbush. The Ditmas Park resistance will convert each mansion's seventh bedroom and fourth bathroom into storerooms for the resistance (copiously supplied by the Farm on Adderley and Pomme de Terre, and fortified by beverages from Sycamore and TB Ackerson's Wine Shop). The Slopians will fall to our unrelenting guerrilla warfare.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 1, 2009 1:38 PM

Agree with that MM. The writing was excellent when they dealt with the grayest areas. Maybe there was no good way, really to end the show. Anything they did would have come off trite and easy or unfathomably perky and chipper.

bxgrl, about Adama, agreed: it's weird that he turned into a drunken shadow of himself in the end. Even in the mutiny sequence he was over-the-top ("there's no forgiveness" or something, what an irony since he'd forgiven Athena and Cally of cold-blooded murder, Starbuck several times of breaking rank, etc.) Why thw writers chose to make the moral center of the show disintegrate is beyond me.

Does anyone feel bad for Gaeta? Or Tory?

BC: wonderful! Rome may replace Paris as my favorite city. He had a good time too (I think, he's quite taciturn) He ate pizza, lasagna and gelato all day.

After hearing all the stuff about Rome traffic, I found it much less threatening than 4th Ave or Flatbush here. As in France, vehicles (except for scooters) are VERY respectful of peds, even my son would just steadily cross the street with no qualms. Makes me laugh when I think of all the heartaches we endure here.

Good museums: Modern Art was fabulous, and smaller ones fun (including a 3-room one (free) devoted entirely to depictions of the Rape of the Sabines, which I told my son was "abduction", him not being able to translate "ratto'.)

otherwise, we just walked a ot between espresso and gelato breaks.

Dibs is the What. That is a certainty.

Dibs became angry at Floyds because Lechecal opined that the What might be there in disguise. Some words were exchanged, yadda, yadda. Fences were mended.

Mr. Slopefarm (?) said Dibs is B Half-off. So now some think that Dibs is all three. Now that is brilliant, Dibs, Half, What.

I'll give no other *clues*. Anyone who wants to may investigate the Dibs-What posts and surmise for himself.

BTW, Mr. What, your psycopathic persona has been slipping into warmth and kindness.

And Mr. What - Dibs, please note that --

The Thrills Are Over At Mount Airy Lodge; Once a Favored Honeymoon Retreat, A Troubled Resort Closes Its Doors

LinkedinDiggFacebookMixxMySpaceYahoo! BuzzPermalinkIn the end, love was no match for the mildew.

After more than a half-century as America's premier ''honeymoon hideaway,'' Mount Airy Lodge, the all-inclusive, star-studded resort where countless couples found passion in a heart-shaped tub, shut its doors this week, a victim of shifting tastes, staggering debt and a less-than-bewitching ambiance. Long before today, when workers began nailing plywood over the windows of the rambling main lodge, much of the 1,200-acre property had fallen into such a shambles that fewer than a third of the 895 faux-gilt rooms were habitable.

''Frankly, the place was so outdated and neglected, it was deplorable,'' said Karen Baker, a spokeswoman for Oaktree Capital Management, an investment company. Oaktree took over Mount Airy last year after its longtime owner, Emil Wagner, killed himself rather than see it sold at a sheriff's auction. Although the resort had been clawing its way back toward solvency, Ms. Baker said, the terror attacks of Sept. 11 kept the faithful at home and pushed the place over the edge.

Notwithstanding its unglamorous demise, many a matron can still blush when recalling nights spent amid floor-to-ceiling mirrors, velvet-swagged canopy beds and shag carpeting so blue and deep, it successfully hid several generations of dirt.

''The food was lousy, but it was a legalized orgy,'' said Mickey Freeman, a comedian who often appeared in the Crystal Room, Mount Airy's 2,000-seat show palace that hosted headliners like Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Connie Francis and Nipsey Russell. ''I used to say, 'If you break the mirror above the ceiling, you'll have seven years of bad sex.' ''

Even if they never played Simon Says by the pool or paddled a boat in the 36-acre artificial lake, plenty of New Yorkers can still sing the tag line to Mount Airy's once-ubiquitous television jingle, the one that promised a dazzling, fun-filled vacation with outstanding nonstop entertainment. ''All you need to bring is your love for everything,'' went the voice-over, ending with the mellifluous ''Your Host With the Most in the Poconos. Beautiful Mount Airy Lodge.'' Suzanne Martens, the Czech-born hostess who transformed an eight-room inn into the Poconos' largest resort, spent heavily on advertising, including the enduring print ad that featured a girl holding a beach ball. (That image, cribbed by Roy Lichtenstein, now hangs at the Museum of Modern Art.)

Mrs. Martens and her nephew, Mr. Wagner, knew their clientele well: hard-working New Yorkers who wanted an easy, inexpensive getaway with relentless distractions. Until the late 1980's, Mount Airy and its sister resorts, Pocono Gardens Lodge and Strickland's Mountain Inn, featured a social staff of six, led by the ''Docster,'' who would use a whistle to direct guests from the Sports Palace to the ski slopes.

Miko Ventrello, 58, a veteran reservation agent who was helping relocate stranded guests today, provided a sample spiel: ''Indoor/outdoor pools, skiing, snowmobiling, ice-skating, hiking, biking, horseback riding, archery, 18 holes of golf, paddle ball . . .,'' she said, pausing only to take a breath. ''You'd never get bored here.''

In its heyday in the 1960's and 70's, Mount Airy, a 90-minute drive from Manhattan, was unofficially known as the gentile version of the Catskills' Concord Hotel, a place that featured polka festivals, all-Irish weekends and all-you-can-eat smorgasbords. ''I like to call it the Daily News demographic,'' said Bob Uguccioni, director of the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau, who was close to Mrs. Martens and Mr. Wagner. ''This was not the rocking chair set. They wanted glitz, glamour and three meals, similar to the cruise ships of today.''

Ronald Logan, Mount Airy's manager between 1968 and 1979, helped oversee an ambitious period of expansion, when Mr. Wagner constructed two chairlifts, the golf course and the lake. ''From Memorial Day to Labor Day, you couldn't get a room,'' he said. Nearby hotels gladly absorbed the overflow, and the entire Poconos region prospered.

PS: Rob, don't return the "public art" -from your description, you are doing a public service by keeping it in your apartment and off the streets. The fact that you were at a porno store on the other hand (no pun intended) does not reflect well on your private life. I would recommend concentrating more on hygiene, grooming, and wardrobe. Look cute while walking your dog. That is a good way to meet other lads. Bye now, have a loverly weekened!

cmu, regarding BSG. I really liked Gaeta's character. It was extremely well written and acted. He was among the most human characters. His intents and motivations were always in the right place, but everything just went horribly wrong. I think he totally lost it permanently when Dee committed suicide in front of him, and everything he did after that made no sense at all.

Since Tory was the only other female East Asian character on tv besides Parminder Nagra's Dr. Ragsgotra, I was hoping they'd do more with her besides being one of Baltar's harem, or an evil beeyatch. She just seem petulant and spoiled. They could have done much more with her, plot-wise. She was just kinda there, and not much more.

Snappy: Yeah, in the final round there were two contestants, one male and one female. The twins had to pick without knowing who the other twin picked. Both of them picked the male contestant (Trevor), so he had to pick one of them, and one twin got her heart broken. But that twin was the one the female contestant didn't like, so it was over for them.

Late to the party and not staying long. However, bksofar is wrong. I never said DIBS was BHO. I said what=BHO. The evidence was pretty overwhelming last week. What actually had some fun with it once he outed himself. But no, DIBS is neither what nor BHO.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Cobble Hiller
There's a wonderful Siamese Rescue place in Virginia & they relay cats up here. They're at
http://va.siameserescue.org/
I got one of my guys from them - it's a terrific group.
$150 & you get a cat that's fixed, i.d.-tagged, etc. & comes w/ carrier, toys. They're very sensitive to the kind of cat/kitten you need. Truly a super group.

Ha, chicken- fond memories of overlockers. Home or industrial? There is nothing like a good industrial machine. Everything for the home market feels like a tinkertoy after that. Thank goodness the Great EVLL has all the equipment downstairs should I feel the urge to sew again. Are you bringing it back to the states or was that a silly question?

Posted by: bxgrl at May 1, 2009 5:47 PM

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 1, 2009 5:54 PM

bxgrl: Gaeta became a self-righteous prig...because he was written that way, let's remember. He (the character) was changed to suit the plot or am I getting too metaphysical? Does the character exist outside the plot? Oh well. So I feel bad, not because G became a srp, but because that's the way the plot crumbled,

Btw, did anyone else notice that ALL the human females (not jsut the stars, even Kat and Seelix and the lesser characters) were dead by the end? ALL of them? What does THAT say?

Posted by: cmu at May 1, 2009 6:08 PM

cmu- Well....duh! Of course he was written that way and changed to suit the plot. There's nothing metaphysical about writers and characters. it's pretty clearcut. In all likelihood once they got a cut off date from Sci-fi they started compressing the storylines to the schedule. That's why changes seemed to happen more rapidly and with less natural development. BTW- I was referring to the Chief- go back and reread my post.

Posted by: bxgrl at May 1, 2009 6:32 PM

Sorry, just trying to be "clever" or at least, having read too much of the BSG bb where they will not talk about what can be but pretend what;s on the screen IS.

TOmoroow...of to Suor Angelica !

Posted by: cmu at May 1, 2009 7:13 PM

cmu- I never read those- I love BSG but haven't yet dropped the line between reality and fantasy :-). At least I tell myself that. Great shows, great writing, great visuals- it's all about the art for me.

Posted by: bxgrl at May 1, 2009 7:19 PM

DIBS, that's the problem with used industrial machinery - they don't come with any instructions!

Best thing to do is to buy a new el-cheapo machine (make sure you buy the same type as the one you have! Yours is probably a lockstitch machine) so you can see how to thread it correctly and work out what the adjustments are (ironically, an industrial machine will have much fewer things to play with).

Practice with lots of scrap bits of material until you get the hang of it. It becomes second-nature once you are used to it (just look at your average sweatshop) but you don't want to damage expensive fabric/leather before you are ready.

Bxgrl, it's a home one just for a few odd jobs - couldn't fit an industrial one in my bag!
