Today's FGVOTD is a tribute to InsertSnappyNameHere (Snappy PBL), who announced late in yesterday's Open Thread that...
SHE GOT A JOB!

Great news Snappy. We are all very happy for our newly employed PLUSA. I was going to post the obvious possible selections for today's FGVOTD, such as She Works Hard for the Money, 9 to 5, etc. However, I decided to go with something much more special. It combines my all-time favourite band with the word "work" in the title.

This music never gets old to me. And the expressions between Paul and John are priceless, especially right at the end, as are John's impish grins - he looks like he knows something Paul doesn't know. I love this video.

Enjoy:

5-29 - ‘The Day After’ the Interest Rate Spike
FRIDAY, MAY 29TH, 2009 | BY MR. MORTGAGE
After the Rate Spike — Mortgage Operations Turmoil…Kick out the Dead Loans Now

Rates are all over the map as lenders assess the damage and price cautiously. Now, it is a mad dash to only focus upon the loans that are locked and have a chance of funding. If the locked loans are not funded quickly and the interest rate complex continues to experience this extreme of volatility, serious losses can occur.

The letter below was just sent by a national bank’s wholesale department this afternoon. This is the mortgage operations nightmare I highlighted in Thursday’s report. In a nutshell, they are kicking aside everything that is not locked or not a purchase in contract.

This is the desperation move that overworked, understaffed mortgage divisions have to make in order to salvage what can be salvaged and fund the loans that can fund in the shortest amount of time possible — preferably before the end of the rate lock.

Kicked aside could be at least half of their past two month’s of unlocked, unfunded originations that may ultimately parish if rates don’t come back quickly…or if the borrower can’t be coaxed into an 3/1 or 5/1 intermediate-term hybrid ARM, which are now at about the same interest rate level as a 30-year fixed was at the beginning of the week. Shortening duration is now an option where two months ago it was not.

If you have a Refi or a Purchase Mortgage in the pipeline then kiss it goodbye! All the Banks Rate Locks have turned into Radioactive Dust and If you don't believe me then call you Bank?Mortgage Broker this morning. The collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble is accelerating!

The What (Thanks for playing, NEXT!)

Good morning Biff! I know Peter Shciff very well, he is in Charge of Pacific Euro Capital and wrote the book "Crash Proof" but his fund lost 27% in the '08 meltdown. Why you ask?? He dranked the Kool-Aid and smoked the crack!

The problem now is risk and inflation expectations. There was a heavy sell off in the long end Bond Market and The Fed can do nothing about it.

Fed Not Setting Rates in Credit Markets: Sources

http://www.cnbc.com/id/30995478

The recent surge in interest and mortgage rates is not down to the Federal Reserve’s purchases of Treasury and mortgage assets, sources familiar with the thinking of Fed officials told CNBC.

Yesterday the 10 yr Treasury rebounded because the Jagoffs was front running more purchases by The FED

The $1.2 trillion in mortgage assets and $200 billion in Treasurys bought by the Fed in an attempt to backstop the troubled credit market were not designed to impact rates, the sources said.

Very soon you will see a Bond Market dislocation that will send rates to the moon! People laughed at me because I predicted 15% rates are coming! I wonder how much "equity" is in your Brownstone???

Hey, I've got a question for all you finance gurus...

I heard about GM's possible bankruptcy because only like 30% of their bond holders would agree to trade the bonds for company stock. If GM files for bankruptcy protection, what happens to the bond holders' money?

snappy, the real net net is most of that bond holder money goes to the biggest benefactors in these proceedings - the SHARKY lawyers. This is likely a $500M payday for the lawyers

What, yes, I think the video says as much, if not more, about all of the yay-sayers as it does about Peter. I guess he got tired of continually being told he was crazy and started to believe he was and then made the same investment mistakes as everybody else.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 29, 2009 9:58 AM

Snappy, not an expert on this but believe bondholders are stacked according to whether their loan is collaterialized, 1st lien, 2nd lien,.... pecking order. that pecking order determines what kind of leverage the bondholder has in negotiating how much of their outstanding loan amt can be recovered,... it's all negotiations - involving tons of lawyers & tons of billable expensive hrs

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 29, 2009 10:09 AM

Chapter 11 puts a freeze on any creditor claims but it's only a temporary solution. There's no way that GM can trade its way back to profitability.

If you interested in a speculative bet, GM bonds are currently trading 8.5 cents on the dollar. I reckon they should be worth closer to 30 cents so there could be some big upside once the dust settles.

The main question is whether the US government will trample on bondholder rights. If they do (which I don't think they will but never say never) then it's game over for the dollar.

Posted by: the chicken at May 29, 2009 10:09 AM

What Chinese Associations are you speaking of?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 29, 2009 10:09 AM

DIBS, not familiar with the return on deposit side of these associations but have heard they charge loan shark rates (ie 20% or more) on the loan origination side.

Yes, m4l, that's why the returns on the deposit side are so high. They are essentially loan sharks that operate within the Chinese community and get their deposits from the community as well. As far as I know, the payback rates on the loans are very high.

If a bond is not paid out on, the bondholder can petition for the company to be liquidated. The assets (land, building, stock, etc) are sold by the liquidator and the proceeds are used to repay the various parties. There is a clear order of priority for repayment and each level gets paid out in full before the next level.

The US government may force the bondholders to accept equity or not allow the petitioning. Either of these is a clear violation of company law.

You Jackasses better wake the fuck up! We are headed toward a Fascist State (Please no Goodwin Law Bullshit)!! Look at this!

Did Feds Strong-Arm BoA-Merrill Deal?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/04/23/business/main4963490.shtml

(AP) New York's attorney general said Thursday government officials pressured Bank of America Corp. CEO Ken Lewis to complete the bank's purchase of Merrill Lynch, threatening his job security.

Ken Lewis testified under oath that Paulson told him to "Make the deal" or be replace!!!

A letter from New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office sent to Congressional leaders and federal regulators said Lewis testified in February that former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke threatened to oust Bank of America's management if the bank tried to back out of buying Merrill Lynch.

This is a clear violation of due diligence but when you elect criminals this is what you get! Every body who received TALF, PIPP or any other form of Government money is trying to pay it back because the Bond Holder will get smoked! This is why rates are going to the moon and they is nothing we can do to stop it. Thanks Jagoffs!

Well as soon as a company files chapter 11 then the shares are suspended so I don't think the common shares are worth anything apart from optionality - they are so close to the brink.

Don't know if you can do anything with options at this point but a long straddle will have good payoff if you can get the volume at a reasonable price - the shares will either go to zero or back to $5 but they definitely aren't going to stay where they are!

Don't know anything about actors but 'Bickerstaffe' is a somewhat commmon northern English (Yorkshire) surname, so maybe it's that. But 'Biggerstaff' would be funny. Suppose at least it would be better than something starting with 'Tiny'.

Posted by: the chicken at May 29, 2009 10:58 AM

The nice thing about PLUSA is it only rhymes with loser if you are actually from Brooklyn and speak in true dialect.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 29, 2009 11:01 AM

Cobble, I don't give Randi all the credit. He gave us the PL, but the "US" for "Usual Suspects" was from a number of people in the infamous "commenting thread" and the "A" as in "Asshat" is thanks to The What. It was a group effort, really.

DIBS, that Forum post with the bread is hilarious!

Hi folks;

Back from Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv is a GREAT city. I wish I could have extended my stay. I loved it because it has so much of a "Mediterranean" feel to it. I am convinced that there must be something about the Mediterranean Sea that brings out a certain lifestyle that is so appealing: a friendliness in the people, folks living out on the street at night and a certain relaxed approach to life. It has been a while since I've been in Tel Aviv, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the security situation is actually alot better there now: few soldiers and guns to be seen, and socially the Israelis and Palestinains seem to be getting along more. Of course, this is just my anecdotal observations from one city.

Congratulations Snappy! Good luck! I am a GM bonholder, and I voted down the offer. It was simply nonsense, and the Obama administration is trying to overturn a 100 years of precedence in bankruptcy law. When a company goes into bankruptcy, the creditors line up to get there share, either in terms of the reorganized company or the liquidated assets. The senior creditors (bendholders) ALWAYS have first dibs, and the unsecured creditors and equity holders are last in line. Weeeelllll, here we have the Obama administration, to pay off one of their political patrons, trying to give the UAW a bigger share of the corporation than the bonholders. Complete nonsense, and I remain convinced that it will not hold up in court, where all of this is going. Moreover, I am convinced that the Obama tream knows it is nonsense, but they want to be able to turn to the UAW and say, "We tried fellas".

In other news, it's Friday, and time for my weekly NYC trivia quiz. Here is one in keeping with my trip to Israel:

One of the major NYC bridges was once known as "The Jews' Highway". Which bridge is it, and why was it called such?

My guess is Williamsburg Bridge - connecting Lower East Side w/ a move up to outer-borough enclave as assimilation & upward mobility.

Posted by: Arkady at May 29, 2009 11:13 AM

"One of the major NYC bridges was once known as "The Jews' Highway". Which bridge is it, and why was it called such?"

Williamsburg Bridge!! As I assume it connects Jewish south williamsburg with jewish LES.

"Biff, how many more posts do I need before I get my PLUSA card?"
12,352 more. That would take approximately two weeks of posting for a true blue PLUSA.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 29, 2009 11:14 AM

@benson I am guessing the Williamsburg bridge because of the connect between LES and Williamsburg.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 29, 2009 11:18 AM

Does that make The Brooklyn Bridge "The Asshats' Highway" since it connects much of Brownstone Brooklyn to Wall Street and the rest of downtown"?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 29, 2009 11:19 AM

DH, those certified PLUSA's have dedicated T1 connections straight into the brownstoner Server plus their ID's certified to be safe by that server's firewall. we non-PLUSA's cant compete with that

Posted by: more4less at May 29, 2009 11:21 AM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 29, 2009 11:21 AM

Dave, Lexis/Nexis is crap! Everyone knows that! It's all about Westlaw baby :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 29, 2009 11:21 AM

I'm going to give this one to Dirty Hipster, who was the first with the most accurate answer. The Williamsburg Bridge was known as The Jews' Highway soon after it was built. It was because it connected the LES (heavily Jewish at the time) with sourthern Williamsburg, which developed rapidly after the bridge opened up as an extension of the LES, both in terms of the building style and the demographics. The LES and sourthern Willaimsburg were virually a single neighborhood, connected by the bridge. Folks walked over it to go back and forth between the areas, visiting relatives, friends, etc. Hence the name.

Long story short re GM, bondholders will get what the courts give tehm.

Many of the bondholders are not lil ol ladies, but hedge funds who boughtthem at a deep discount and are trying to make a big score. Nothing wrong wityh that, just saying...

Posted by: denton at May 29, 2009 11:32 AM

Verrozano bridge = "guinea gangplank". don't start, my grandparents came over on a spaghetti boat

Posted by: bridges at May 29, 2009 11:34 AM

Denton;

Really? I would think that the courts should follow bankruptcy law, which states that the senior creditors have the first stake in the reorganization or liquidation.

I think that by your comment about who the bondholders are you would like the settlement to be political, like the Obama team. I would like the matter settled by law.

I went to the Concord with a giant NYS BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) School Group. I'd never seen anything like that before. I was swimming in the afternoon and ice-skating at night. Drunk ice skating that is, I flirted like crazy with a bar-back who was working in the room Jay Leno was preforming in (My friend and I managed to slip in). I convinced him to hang out with us after he finished and also got him to snag a few bottles which he was kind enough to personally deliver to our room. I was so bad.

The giant dining hall was amazing though. like 2,000 people dining all at the exact same time. The food was good too. I can't imagine the effort it took to pull that off. Was a blast.

Glad I got to see it, even if it was slightly past it's heyday.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 29, 2009 1:25 PM

My dad was a member of the Dress Boys and the Dress Buyers (long defunct I'm sure) they had their annual meetings at the Raleigh. I never got to the Concord until I was long married and we went for aweekend when the husband heard it was all the food you can eat. He was only 1 of 2 black guests there and the little old Jewish waitresses loved him because he kept eating. And eating. Little old Jewish ladies love anyone who eats borsht (ugh!).

The Catskills were great and lots of fun. The hotels were beautiful and I got my first serious kiss at 15 from the seriously gorgeous Israeli waiter- who was 17.

Debt Negotiators May Give Little Relief to Consumers (Update1)
By Jamie McGee

May 29 (Bloomberg) -- Ulish Hopkins, a former bus- dispatcher from Chicago, turned to a debt-settlement company last year after piling up about $30,000 in credit-card bills. Seven months later, he owed close to $40,000.

Hopkins says the company told him it could reduce his bills by about 50 percent through negotiations with lenders. He was told to stop paying creditors and to put monthly payments in an escrow account, which the firm used to cover its fees. Instead of reducing his bills, interest and late fees raised his indebtedness and damaged his credit score.

“They never told me that the money I was paying wasn’t going to my debt, it was going to them,” said Hopkins, 59, who quit work in January 2008 after a brain tumor led to surgery. He now receives $1,539 a month in disability checks. “You are better on your own.”

Credit-card delinquencies are at record highs, according to Fitch Ratings, and the U.S. unemployment rate of 8.9 percent is the highest since 1983. As more consumers fall behind on bills, settlement companies often end up adding to the debt burden rather than offering a cost-saving solution, said Gail Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling in Silver Spring, Maryland.
“There has been significant growth in the debt-settlement industry based on the economic decline,” Cunningham said. “People are financially distressed and when that happens, the unscrupulous among us seem to come out in droves.”

"ENY, the angus burger was once again very good (to my surprise)."

Better you than me, M4L. You're a brave man. I NEVER eat Mc Donald's unless traveling/extremely hungry/can't find anything else.

Sixyears, where in hell did you find a "Roll-n-Roaster??" Are you in Canarsie? Flatlands? I didn't think they existed anymore!

I am extremely late (been in PR hell all day) but I want to congratulate Snappy. I knew she was on track when she said she had a VERY good interview the other day.

Posted by: East New York at May 29, 2009 2:17 PM

Bxgrl, yeah, please do.

Bummer about the kitties. I just found out the momma cat that gave us ours has 3 more kittens in our neighbors yard. I'm going to catch that hoochie and have her fixed if it kills me (it just might).

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 29, 2009 2:18 PM

DIBS just sent me a pic from his phone. Apparently his client lunch got out of hand.

"DH, was there abundant talent in your area? if not for the sales team being in the office today, my eyes would be starving big time. It was skinny pickings at midtown"

Actually Soho is kinda lacking today - Just had an al fresco lunch and didn't see anything noteworthy.

There were alot of talented females dining at "delicatessan" on Lafayette and Prince when I passed, but I'm convinced they hire them to eat there, as that place is crappy as eff.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 29, 2009 3:20 PM

do it! do it! do it!

Oh I'm not going anywhere, you're stuck with me.

If you want DIBS to feel better post some pics of the kitchen staff in any NYC restaurant.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 29, 2009 3:22 PM

uuummm, does anyone have pics of Amzi?
;-)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 29, 2009 3:24 PM

If anyone does, I'll buy them.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 29, 2009 3:26 PM

Hey, little drummer boy, are you going to post the pics or what?
Your adoring public awaits.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 29, 2009 3:27 PM

Actually, I took a couple pics of the guys during our PLUSA Pub Crawl through Clinton Hill. Amzi was in them.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 29, 2009 3:28 PM

I would have posted my band pics, but apparently DIBS prefers to see the kitchen staff from a Mexican restaurant. As such, here is one:

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 29, 2009 3:37 PM

I wouldn't ever post pics of anyone without their consent.

BRG, I can send what you want to Amzi, but you'll have to convince him to give it to you.

BRG, usually when someone posts "A$$" it usually means that it's for sale. Those posts are oftentimes deleted on craigslist as you well know.

Please don't resort to brownstoner for your commerce.
