I haven't spoken much about my music (or construction) career before, but I was extremely lucky to be able to perform with some legendary stars back in the day.

Here is a clip of me and Johnny Cash doing a duet.

most.boring.holiday.weekendend.EVER.

i hope everyone else had a better one!

i did quit smoking tho. im on the patch. im eating twizzlers like mad.

i told everyone i know that i quit so that if i do start smoking again ill just look like an idiot who doesnt keep his word.

someone on the street stopped me this morning and asked if i was on stage one hahahah. he saw the patch and me chewing on a twizzler. he said the patch helps but that after you get off it all the cravings come back :-/

oddly after 24 hours of not smoking my sense of smell HAS come back. and i never realized how smelly park slope is lol

Good luck, Rob. Hope you don't but if you relapse you won't look like an idiot - just a normal (?!) human being.

Totally off any relevance here, does anyone have expertise in Outlook Express?

Good morning:) Biff, you had me going for a minute there...I was truly expecting to see you and Mr. Cash crooning together!

Congrats Rob! I'm proud of you! Twizzlers are better than cigarettes...you can exercise fat away but you can't walk off cancer!

Sorry, Arkady, I don't use Outlook Express.

My "Block Senders" function is screwed up. It doesn't remember things I enter. Been going on for about a week now.

Oulook Express? Are you using it for email or newsgroups or a little of both? Regardless, OE is a poor choice for either applications, but if your insistant on using it anyway - what's your question?

Posted by: CookieCutterBrownstone at May 26, 2009 9:32 AM

Good idea, Chicken. If enough people whack the ***k out of you when caught smoking, that might make you reconsider lighting up at least some of the time :)

CCB - my block senders isn't working. Tools don't give any help. I am committed to OE for email.

Did anybody see any houses over the weekend?

Posted by: the chicken at May 26, 2009 9:48 AM

Hola People.

Atlantic City was fun (sorry Rob, not to rub it in). The consumpsion of tequila at high volumes (this should make DH happy) and extreme amount of eye candy in clubs and casinos (this should make M4L happy). All and all, good weekend.

On another note, I am not much of a cospiracy theorist but I am honestly starting to beleive that The What is somehow employed by Mr. B since mopar asked What a question in one of the random post from Friday/Thursday at like 1:30AM on Saturday and he responded like 15 minutes later at 1:45AM!!! Who is on there browsing through posts on Saturday night during a long weekend and answers right away?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 26, 2009 9:51 AM

DIBS, the air card only get your from computer to network near you. fiber optics is what transports your data to Brownstoner server.

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 9:51 AM

didn't see any houses over the wkend but did do a quick check on status of houses I noted as relative decent deals. ~90% of those "decent deal" houses are in contract or sold now. was a little surprised by that

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 9:54 AM

Home Prices in 20 U.S. Cities Fall More Than Forecast (Update1)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aRSStiFoF9HM&refer=home

Get a load of this shit!

"Record foreclosures are depressing the value of other properties, contributing to a slump in household wealth that is hurting consumer spending and the economy. Still, falling prices and mortgage rates have made homes more affordable, helping to stem the slide in sales, which will eventually help prices stabilize."

Have fun the fall is coming...

oh!!! i totally forgot to say that ill be living in park slope for another year. my roommate is renewing the lease and we got a very minimal rent increase. just 25 bux :)
definitely reduces a lot of having to move stress. also since i pay 300 bux for smoking, i am just going to pretend my rent got reduced by 275 bux a month.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 26, 2009 10:42 AM

Congrats Rob, you'll be with us for another year. And that's some nice pocket change at the end of the month. You can buy some serious 40s with that.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 26, 2009 10:42 AM

don't forget to offset the cost of twizzlers in your calculations Rob.

Perhaps you could approach the manufacturers for sponsorship?

Posted by: the chicken at May 26, 2009 10:49 AM

Instead of the tag line "Twizzlers make mouths happy" they could change it to "Twizzlers make Rob happy!" Dude, you'd be great in a Twizzlers commercial :) Seriously.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 11:05 AM

BRG, I didn't attend the crawl so you'll need to get info from BIFF

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 11:05 AM

Try some cinnamon sticks, Rob. I've heard they are helpful for quitting. You eat them slower than twizzlers and they feel more like cigs when you hold them. Google it, there may be some advice on this. You can get a bunch real cheap at International Taste (7th Ave and Garfield).

Posted by: PitbullNYC at May 26, 2009 11:15 AM

a minimal rent increase? Dude rob, what is that all about? You should have gotten a 20% decrease with a renewal. Or a free months rent, or something. I think you should go back and re-negotiate.

Posted by: king of the burg at May 26, 2009 11:19 AM

LOL rob got PWNED by his landlord!!!

Posted by: randolph at May 26, 2009 11:22 AM

our rent for the area is (supposedly) below market as it is king of the burg. i think a 25 dollar increase isnt that bad.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at May 26, 2009 11:27 AM

I got a $25 increase in rent as well due to higher water costs and taxes. Considering that I pay hundreds less per month than folks right by me with the same layout and size, I'm cartwheeling. You all need to remember that just because rents are falling as a whole, not everyone's rent is going down.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 11:33 AM

Just like houseprices, it's the absolute price that counts - not the percentage fall. A 50% cut in rent is no great bargain if your rent was 3x too expensive to begin with.

Jumping out to pick up a new suit. Catch you all later!

Posted by: the chicken at May 26, 2009 11:36 AM

Enjoy Israel, Benson. The weather should be terrific. Try not to spend too much time working.

I had a great weekend. I built my first table. Everyone liked it.

Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 11:39 AM

ENY, from scratch or you assemble a "assembly needed" table?

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 11:42 AM

ENY, I build furniture as well. I've done a two entertainment centers, coffee tables, night stands and bookshelves. I want to build a dining table for myself, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 11:50 AM

Speaking of working with your hands, here's an excellent article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24labor-t.html?_r=1

My handiwork is unfortunately limited to putting together IKEA furniture.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 11:53 AM

I found a wrought iron table base on the street, took it home and painted it. Then I bought a square piece of raw plywood, finished it on the bottom and sides, glued it in place on the base, and then screwed onto the base with a drill. Next, I bought some cheap colorful tiles at Home Depot, and used adhesive to apply them to the table top. Last, I filled in the spaces with grout. It came out better than I imagined it would! It's really nice table that now sits in my little backyard piazza. I'm sure you real furniture-builders (Snappy) do much more impressive stuff, but for my first effort I emerged very proud!

Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 11:59 AM

ENY, that's pretty impressive - especially for your 1st table

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 12:06 PM

ENY, I don't know that I'd count myself amongst 'real furniture builders'....I'm definitely still learning as I go along. I made the decision a year ago to trash all the pieces I had built (regret that now) because I want to only display higher quality work in my apt. Whenever I do get around to doing a dining table, I just hope it comes out well and doesn't collapse during dinner :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 12:15 PM

Thanks, M4L.

"I made the decision a year ago to trash all the pieces I had built (regret that now) because I want to only display higher quality work in my apt."

Whoa! Next time you plan on doing that, let me know first so I can come by and pick up your odd pieces!

Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 12:19 PM

It is hard for me to fathom rent increases right now. I can see very few instances where it makes sense to except an increase (rent regulated units being one example). Just because the landlord sends you a new lease doesn't mean you have to sign it. Call and negotiate. now is the first time in a while you can do that. Ask for the stars...

Posted by: king of the burg at May 26, 2009 12:28 PM

ENY, if I build and ditch anything else, you'll be the first to hear about it :)

Hi all,

I don't intend to be an open thread lurker or poster, but I did want to come here and apologize personally to cobblehiller. I know I said some pretty nasty things before I left for vacation, and I apologize profusely. It was wrong and completely absurd. I needed some time away from this blog to realize that the boundary between fun and entertaining to something else is a fine one. I don't want to be on here so much...it's not the best use of my time really, and perhaps I was projecting my own thoughts onto you. For that, I am truly sorry Cobblehiller.

I was in your neighborhood on Sunday, and fell in love with it all over again.

Snappy, my dear, what tools does one need to build bookshelves? It is my great ambition to build bookshelves.

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 2:16 PM

Yay! It's housewives night! **dancing with joy** I love this group of women. It's just the right blend of trash (the bulk of them) and sophistication (Jacqueline) to keep Snappy happy!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:16 PM

Mopar, when building bookshelves, I use my 7 1/4" circular saw to the cut the wood, I've got a small sander, I use my drill and hold it together with good wood screws (I don't know how to do different types of joints yet) and then just a staining brush for when I stain it. Oh, and of course a level and tape measure.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:22 PM

mopar, BH used a router for the 'slots' for the shelves to 'sit in'. It turned out very nicely.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:27 PM

I was really sick on Saturday, so we didn't go out of town, but on Sunday we did have a staycation in prime Brooklyn. "It's another world here," said bf.

*Brunch at Buttermilk Channel (cheddar waffles)
*Old Stone House revolutionary war museum and garden in South Slope
*Brooklyn Yard (grassy bank on the Gowanus Canal)
*Erie Basin, Red Hook antique jewelry shop
*Brooklyn Inn, old bar in Boerum Hill
*Vinegar Hill for dinner

The most amazing thing was discovering totally quiet cobblestone streets and perfectly preserved 19th century storefronts with birds chirping in Vinegar Hill. It was like the H-bomb went off there. We would have thought we were in the deep country, except it's next to a giant power plant.

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 2:27 PM

Gemini...I will be glued to the tv whenever the table flipping episode airs...I can see it now...me. couch. popcorn. beer. phone off. YEAH!

CH, where the heck does your BH do all this woodworking in your aptmt which you describe is cozy? My friends will be buying but they're as stingy or more than us - ie they'll only buy if a juicy deal pops up. So they'll likely end up renting to get into neighborhood and wait for the good deals.

Snappy, Cobble, that does sound fairly easy. I was really bad with the non-power saws in nursery school though. Couldn't cut anything.

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 2:29 PM

M4L, well, as it happens, we have the good fortune of having a good sized deck. So we've been able to saw, drill, sand and paint things outdoors.

I think it's likely smart for your friends to live here for a bit and have a good look around. And who knows if prices have hit bottom yet, right?

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 2:37 PM

Mopar
that day sounded delightful
see who needs the city anyway when you have so much more in BK to entertain you!

Insert/TL - Ok lemme check out that link

Posted by: gemini10 at May 26, 2009 2:37 PM

THL, that was AWESOME!!! ROFL!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:38 PM

My favorite comment was from Jen:

"MY favorite Teresa moment was on the preview show when she said she "used to" have big hair. LOVE HER!"

That was my favorite funny moment too. I thought there's no USED TOO about it sister. You're Big Hair For Life!

Ahhh...can't wait for tonight.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 2:43 PM

I damn near fell off the couch when I read the one comment about the younger girl looking like a cross between Big P@ssy and Fergie! Kids should be off-limits to this kind of ribbing, but I'm ashamed to say it caught me off guard and I laughed my @ss off.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:46 PM

THL, sorry, I couldn't resist. :-)

"did you all go to your pub crawl on Sat night?"
G10, yes we did. I'll post a summary momentarily. I've been a very bad PL today as I've been swamped with work and just got out of a long meeting. I jotted down some notes on the places we went to. It was me, Amzi, DeLepp, DH and sixyears and we had a lot of fun.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 2:46 PM

THL - what a great blog that link is
wow - I will read more of it
but scary how tan little "gia" is - ugh! - she's adorable but too tan for a kid and the gold lame bikini covering her "bubbies" - oy oy oy

Biff - cool! - is the June gathering still happening - am planning on coming to that at least for petesakes!
ha

Posted by: gemini10 at May 26, 2009 2:49 PM

DH, 6Y&C, Biff and Amzi, great fun on the PLPC. I've got a feeling we'll be doing an indian clear skies dance in mid june.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 26, 2009 2:51 PM

G10, yes, but the only thing is it might have to move to Wednesday, June 17. That might turn out to be better anyway, as the bartender of the "winning" location said it would be less busy on a Wednesday than on a Thursday.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 2:51 PM

By the way, how much do these ladies get paid per episode? I heard on the radio that unconfirmed estimates for the RHWONY were 30k per episode. I also read somewhere that Lauren Conrad was getting 75k per episode of the Hills (did you see Spencer's apology last night??? It seemed slightly genuine!!!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:52 PM

Oh Snappy I know! Those poor kids. I did forgot about that comment. I gotta say, it was so friggin' dead on though wasn't it?

That's why I don't feel bad making fun of these women. Anyone who puts their kids out there like that is just wrong. T's the stage mom extraordinaire though. I'm guessing she's thinking it's good exposure for their (the kids) careers.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 2:53 PM

What was the winning location?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 2:53 PM

I have a terrible new addiction: Renovation blogs. I've read every Katy Elliott post twice. And all the house posts going back three years on DoorSixteen. I bet THL and others here can relate. They're so much better than home dec magazines. I just wish I could read them at the breakfast table.

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 2:53 PM

DeLepp, thanks for meeting us. You were a hoot. Feel free to add to or amend anything below. My memory might be a bit hazy, especially in regards to the places we saw towards the end. Here is the summary of our pub crawl, in order of where we went (Kif might be out of order):

1) Outpost Lounge – nice patio, but more of a café than a bar/lounge. No hard liquor, just wine and bottled beer.

2) Lox Lounge – this one was difficult to judge. There was a very raucous baby shower going on when we walked in and everyone slowed down the dancing and stared at us like we were a bunch of narcs arriving to make a bust. We received a nice contact high as we passed the manager, who was enjoying a blunt as we checked out the ample outdoor space, but ultimately we thought, if nothing else, this venue would be too loud for our group.

3) Mirrors on Grand – it was quiet enough, but there was no outdoor space and likely insufficient indoor space. And, as DH pointed out, PBR should never be more than $2 a can.

4) Speakeasy – nice place, which had some amazing smelling food, but not enough lounging/standing space for us and I could have read the entire Lord of the Rings series by the time we were asked what we wanted to drink.

5) Rope – this little dark horse of a spot turned out to have fast and friendly service and lots of space both indoors and out. Appears to be the best choice. This was the unanimous winner and will be the site of the next Friends of 'Stoner gathering.

6) Brooklyn Public House – great beer selection but definitely too busy and insufficient space for a larger group.

7) Madiba – we walked in and out of this place without even getting a drink, which says a lot since DH and I were in attendance. Nice place but space just not conducive to a big group.

‎8) Kif Moroccan Restaurant – this one wasn’t on our list but looked interesting. It’s a nice looking restaurant with amazing outdoor space, but there is limited indoor space to linger around if not at a table eating and they don’t seem to be used to accommodating large groups that gather for drinks.

9) Habana Outpost – we passed on this place based on one of the PLUSAs that was familiar with the venue saying it was too busy and there wouldn’t be enough room for us.

10) Moes – lots of indoor space, but way too busy and loud for our gathering.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 2:56 PM

Teresa needs to rethink the whole idea of putting her kids out there. I'm sure if she read some of the comments on that blog, she'd shield them from the camera a bit more.

Biffy, can you say more about Rope? Where is it exactly?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 3:04 PM

11217 just how bipolar are you!?

and i final got caught up on RHNJ since we got cable back this weekend. wow what is up with their fascination with all things marble!?!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at May 26, 2009 3:05 PM

Where is Rope? I feel like I should know this one... but, ah, I don't.

Also, am thrilled it's not to be Brooklyn Public House since I'm now wishing strong poxes down on their houses. I know, I know I recommended them before -- but now they suck.

Posted by: Heather at May 26, 2009 3:07 PM

Haha Biff - you took some copious notes!

Nice meeting you DeLepp, and thanks for showing us around your hood.

Rope was definitely the all around winner. The other spots were nice, but too small and noisy (and expensive!! 10 dollars for a makers mark?!?! I'm looking at you Speakeasy!)

Snappy, they don't appear to have their own website, but here is a link to their address and a map. It's technically in Fort Greene but I believe it's very close to Clinton Hill (DeLepp can confirm; he showed he knows the area very well).

http://nymag.com/listings/bar/rope/

Oh, I just saw they have a "Trivia Smackdown the first Tuesday of every month". THL, where are you??

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 3:10 PM

Rope is on Myrtle and Clinton - nothing too special. Just a nice local bar with a huge outdoor space, and ample space inside if the weather isn't good. Full bar, good beer selection and wasn't crowded on a Saturday night, so during the week we'd probably have the place to ourselves.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 3:10 PM

Oh Snap! Did someone say trivia???!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 3:12 PM

There's no train over there :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 3:15 PM

DH, I didn't realize this, but one review of Rope states "A small scrawl on the bathroom wall reads, "I hate hipsters."" Did you leave that little ironic piece of graffiti?

Here is the French Morrocan place. As you can see, it's very nice from the pictures and the outside is sweet, but if it rains, we'll have no room at all inside.

"and i final got caught up on RHNJ since we got cable back this weekend. wow what is up with their fascination with all things marble!?!"

Rob, get it right.

It's Marble, granite AND Onyx (no not the rappers).

Teresa's having that house built because, "I don't want to live in someone else's house--that's gross."

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 3:18 PM

Biff,

Sorry I missed the crawl. Can't say I didn't warn you guys about Madiba, though.

Mopar,

At least you haven't gotten yourself addicted to houseinprogress.com., which leads to something like houseblogs.net. They collected a scary # of bloggers. I lurked there about 3-4 years ago, but it had so little to do with Brooklyn, except for one guy with a rowhouse and a motorcycle in Bay Ridge who used to post a bit here, too, and a blog concerning 649 6th Ave, with cool cartoons. Lots of bungalows and arts & crafts renos. More of a nationwide DIY community of people renovating all kinds of houses. I was particularly fond of the "chateau de mold" blog, but was frustrated I could never find out how their legal battle ended. Don't do it, mopar, you will lose days, my friend. But if you do, report back.

Posted by: slopefarm at May 26, 2009 3:18 PM

Snappy, there is the G train, and there are multiple buses that run through to downtown Bklyn.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 3:18 PM

"There's no train over there :("

That's good, as everyone should get off the C train at Clinton/Washington and walk up what has to be one of the grandest streets in NYC. (clinton ave)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 3:18 PM

The 'C' train is a pain for me to get to, and I still say the 'G' is not a real train!!! Argh...the transfers I see in my future :( I've gotta figure out an all bus route....

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 3:23 PM

THL,

"Teresa's having that house built because, "I don't want to live in someone else's house--that's gross."

That statement pretty much sums these ladies up for me.

They live in a far away land inhabited by people I cannot relate to! Does she not want to walk on sidewalks that others have walked on? What about planes? Does she need the seat reupholstered before she sets her booty on it? G*D HELP US ALL!

Whose the stage mother? She spent $1,000 on kids clothes that day - OMG. That's INSANE. I can't relate. They are martians to me.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 3:24 PM

DH, you took the words right out of my mouth! It isn't that far from the C train and I was just about to suggest that people stroll up Clinton Avenue and admire some of the unbelievable homes (the most impressive being those built by the Pratt family, as DeLepp reminded me) on their way to Rope.

Maybe we should meet at Borough Hall and hijack a bus to take all us Asshats to Rope. I can see it now:
"The Taking of the Ikea Shuttle Bus 123"

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 3:24 PM

I'll be walking over

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 3:24 PM

:( Snappy feels crappy. National Grid is doing work near my house on the gas lines and my whole apartment now smells like gas. Talk about headache and nausea. Gotta lay down...here's to hoping that I actually wake up later!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 3:25 PM

Cobble, I ended up walking home. It wasn't that far and, surprisingly enough, felt fine Sunday morning.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 3:25 PM

If I even started to relate to them I'd be very concerned.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 3:27 PM

snappy, rope is in clinton hill by about 25 steps. You can take the G to Clinton/Washington(back of train if coming from south broklyn) and walk down Clinton Ave to Myrtle, about a 5 minute juant. You can ponder whether the Pratt girs were anything like the Real Housewives of NJ with their mansions and skullery maids. The Pratt boys were arch enemies to the point they cut the pratt house on the south side of street in half. Now a place for nuns which was on the recent house tour.

Posted by: DeLepp at May 26, 2009 3:27 PM

Biff, pitch that movie idea to Hollywood! A bunch of drunken Brooklyn asshats could make for great entertainment :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 3:27 PM

"If I even started to relate to them I'd be very concerned."

I like the blond chick, she's got this cold icy attitude that is...well...chilling! She's fascinating.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 3:29 PM

Mopar - How was Yard?

Posted by: Arkady at May 26, 2009 3:37 PM

Yay! Rope! That was among my initial suggestions. Like that place. Low key, good drinks selection, plenty o room.

Biff! Sorry I missed the crawl too. I got your text but couldn't swing it. Will be there on the 18th though for sure.

Posted by: wasder at May 26, 2009 3:42 PM

Haha Biff - I'm sure that was left by some frustrated Pratt Student.

Snappy - I'm more then positive that there is a bus that runs very close to rope

Check out this website, it links into the bus/subway timetables. it helped me get from williamsburg to clinton hill in approx 15 minutes via bus!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 3:49 PM

Snappy, headache and nausea? Get the hell out of there now! What are you thinking?

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 3:52 PM

wasder, we were sorry you couldn't make it.

Just watch the date...there's a good chance it will actually be on Wednesday, June 17 and NOT Thursday, June 18.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 3:52 PM

"8) Kif Moroccan Restaurant – this one wasn’t on our list but looked interesting."

Rewrite: "this one wasn't on our list but the waitress looked interesting" I was disappointed they don't have sheesha (aka hookah) to smoke.

"3) Mirrors on Grand – it was quiet enough, but there was no outdoor space and likely insufficient indoor space. And, as DH pointed out, PBR should never be more than $2 a can."

The Sam Adams was only $4, so maybe their pricing scheme is a bit off, or they're trying to keep the PBR-guzzling Pratt-going hipsters out.

Anyway, great to see you all out there! Hangover wasn't that bad, CH, as there was plenty of time for walking in between stops.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 3:53 PM

haha sixyears - If we were going to stay at Mirrors longer I was going to try a "notorious BIG" - which was a combination of henny and pineapple if i recall correctly. (which would have been a very bastardized sidecar cocktail)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 3:56 PM

"Teresa's having that house built because, "I don't want to live in someone else's house--that's gross." "

Ha ha, you guys ever read the rental listings that say "Brand new house -- nobody ever lived in it before" (with misspellings) and the photos clearly show a renovated (horribly renovated) apartment? Idiocy.

Brooklyn Yard: Cute place to relax with a book. We would go back on a day with no cover charge. We didn't want to listen to loud DJ music. They have chairs, tacos, beer, and wine. They lack margaritas and artisinal ice cream.

Biff et al, impressive reconnaissance and planning for our next party. Thank you.

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 3:56 PM

THL, Slope, you're way ahead of me on the reno blogs. In fact, THL, I think my new addiction may be all your fault. :)

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 4:01 PM

DH, was the Notorious BIG the drink advertised on the chalkboard there? Or am I making that up?

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 4:06 PM

Thanks mopar! I was worried for our safety, initially. You can't imagine how scary it feels to be a middle aged (speaking for myself), unsuspecting, mangia cake, gentrifying-looking, pathetic-loser-Caucasion-asshat walking around the terrifying ghettos known as Clinton Hill and Fort Greene, but fortunately Amzi joined in to give us some much needed street cred. This of course was only after he was stopped and invited in to something like 25 different homes on his way to meeting us. Apparently he is the King of Brownstone Brooklyn.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 4:06 PM

"3) Mirrors on Grand – it was quiet enough, but there was no outdoor space and likely insufficient indoor space. And, as DH pointed out, PBR should never be more than $2 a can."

Did you guys see any shady activity going on? This is the place Mr. Brownstoner claimed in a post some time ago needed to be "checked out" by police. Then he dummied up when some posters (including me) asked what exactly raised his suspicions. I'm curious to know what the scene is like over there (never been).

Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 4:09 PM

Biff, LOL!

Posted by: mopar at May 26, 2009 4:09 PM

Haha Biff, I think your self-drawn map of Asshat Hill clinched the tourist image for all of us!

Amzi's story of going a week without buying groceries (neighbors kept inviting him over) was a great advertisement for Bed-Stuy.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 4:11 PM

ENY,

Mirrors was very quiet. We arrived at around maybe 8? 8:15? Three older guys on the left side of the bar, which could fit about ten people...it seemed like a very local hangout. Nothing shady at all (except us of course).

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 4:16 PM

6yrs, if Amzi is a fat regular look dude like me (vs. a certified stud), doubt he would get all those invites

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 4:21 PM

ENY, I certainly didn't see any shady activity going on. The bartender was friendly and it was certainly a very comfortable place to have a drink. It was dimly lit and had pretty funky tunes playing. At the time, it was just 6Years, DH and me there from our group and I believe the rest of the crowd was exclusively African American (which wasn't different than a few of the other places we went, including the baby shower at Lox Lounge).

My only reason for including the last sentence above is because, from your post, I'm guessing perhaps people felt there was some potential race-baiting when it was mentioned on this blog before. Is that it? I thought it was a perfectly cool place for a drink.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 4:22 PM

I just tried to look at the Clinton Hill Blog, but the DOE computer system thinks it's a "malicious website" - interesting.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 4:27 PM

"Is that it?"

Well, it seemed that was where Mr. Brownstoner was going with his post, but as I said, he refused to address the post (and in fact took it down) once people started to ask questions. I just wondered exactly what he meant. Not very important in the larger scheme of things. I'm glad it turned out to be an OK place!

Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 4:28 PM

ROPE should give us discounts. The anticipated posts on this blog and word of mouth all these asshats invading the place, business should be up

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 4:34 PM

Yeah, Mirrors was fine. I have a pretty good nose for shady happenings in bars and didn't see anything noteworthy. Just some peeps having some stellas and watching the lakers game.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 4:35 PM

"ROPE should give us discounts. The anticipated posts on this blog and word of mouth all these asshats invading the place, business should be up"

Yeah - perhaps Biff or myself should call and see if something could be worked out. But I imagine they already have a pretty good happy hour in the early weeknight evenings, and prices were already very cheap.

I can't wait to see the look on the bartenders face when 40 asshats roll into his bar on a night that would normally be dead. KA-CHING!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 4:37 PM

and they tell the chinese delivery guy "we didn't order anything from you guys today" and I respond "China man here to spend big money"

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 4:40 PM

DH, the bartender at Rope, who was very nice, gave me the name and number of the Manager. As with the other gatherings, I'll give him a call in advance and make sure they know we're coming. I also do make a point of telling them that the ultimate bar of choice can get lots of positive, free word of mouth advertising via the posts on this blog. I'll ask about discounts but, like you said, the prices were relatively cheap there to begin with compared to a few of the other nearby venues.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 4:42 PM

DH — LOL!

I think we should give them a heads up rather than descend on them en masse! The folks at the Ale House were uhm, not to happy apparently. : (

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 4:42 PM

BIFF, middle aged is when you cross over into the 40's; not 30's

Posted by: more4less at May 26, 2009 4:49 PM

cobble, I agree. I don't think we'll have a repeat of the Ale House (Rope's space is completely different) but I will call the Rope management very soon to talk about it.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 26, 2009 4:50 PM

That's great Biff, thank you for doing all this!

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 4:54 PM

Mopar, I'm awake now! I realize now that taking a nap and staying in here was a bad idea, but I've survived :)

So, are all you asshats back to work tomorrow?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 5:06 PM

most of us asshats back to work 2day

Posted by: infinitejester at May 26, 2009 5:18 PM

Snappy if I make it to the outing, I can car service again, I don't mind at all. It will all depend on the date and time my flight comes back if it's the 17th.

Biff, and rest, thanks for getting together and scouting the perfect spot for this event!

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 26, 2009 5:20 PM

ROFL infinitejester!

Kens, I'm gonna put you in my speed dial and erase Arecibo's number! LOL.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 5:24 PM

Sounds good Biff!

is it still fleet week? I was hanging out on Franklin in Greenpoint last night and there was a group of 20 sailors walking down the street giving everyone high fives. Was shocked to see them in such an out of the way place.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 5:25 PM

DH, they probably heard that it's not only acceptable, but fully expected to swill from 40s in Brooklyn :) We Brooklyn folks rule!

Oldie but goodie Snappy.

I hadn't been to Myrtle in quite some time and was surprised how hustling and bustling it was.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 5:50 PM

I feel a song coming on...

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 5:52 PM

Cobble...perhaps you are humming along to In the Ghetto by Elvis? LOL

DH, "hoochies"!!! I haven't heard that term in a while! Ah, memories!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 5:54 PM

Myrtle has a lot going on. BH lived over there by Park & Washington. We were in and out of quite a few places on Myrtle. The thing is it was always pretty busy, it's just the types of stores/bar/restaurants that has changed.

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 5:56 PM

Snappy, actually it was Stevie Wonder, but Elvis will do nicely!

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 5:57 PM

Ah, even better. I prefer Stevie :)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 26, 2009 6:05 PM

Dave isn't there! He's at one of his OTHER houses! : P

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 6:07 PM

Cobble, considering the age of the music I listen to, I wouldn't worry about that!

BRG...If I remember correctly, your caddy seats are leather. Remember what Dave admits to doing on his leather couch??? I say let him find his own ride back to Asshat Village! LOL
(J/K...luv ya Dave!)

Sigh, I do feel so ancient at times! Thank you Snappy, I forgot I was talking to the woman that still listens to Anne Murray! ; )

LOL! I was actually thinking about my music tastes yesterday while taking a walk. I asked myself, 'how many of your favorite singers/bands are dead???' It was an eye opener!

OMG....My cat just pulled a TOBY!

He was trying to remove a fur ball. I thught all the ruckus was just the kittens playing.

Christ Almighty I just had to slowly scan every surface in my house.

I felt like a crime scene investigator.

What made it all the more annoying was the others cats running around like what's going on? Am I in trouble? Why i the old guy locked in the bathroom howling?

You mean from that commercial? I about died when Pia did that recently. I was scrubbing and lysoling that section of carpet for 10 minutes and threatening to make her the cutest homeless cat in all of Brooklyn!

Good lord, it's 6:20 I'm talking to myself in here.

LOL!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 26, 2009 6:22 PM

Ah, yes, the "Why the ***K am I locked in the potty" howl. It's an unmistakeable cry!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 6:23 PM

OOH, that's a harsh one! I think I'll avoid that question for now! ACK!

I asked my step-daughter to make me a CD of her top 25 played songs. Just to download them off the top of the list on her iPod — because I wanted to hear what a 20 year old listens to. And do you know that there was a Paul Simon song on there! I was SHOCKED!

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 6:24 PM

YES!! Just like the commericial.

He's never done that before. I had a string incident with Cookie once but never a fur ball. They usually just toss them up without much mess or fanfare.

Ok, off to cook a little dinner - pork chops and applesauce! Nite gals!

Posted by: cobblehiller at May 26, 2009 6:26 PM

He's till glaring at me for having the audacity to "assist him" in his goal.

Listen toots, I'm SO not thrilled about having to do it either!

Enjoy Cobble, sounds delicious.

When my cat is ready to toss out a hairball I wind up chasing her around with a piece of paper for her to yack it up on. I'm so over scrubbing this damned carpet! I'm gonna grow a set of balls and call the landlord tomorrow and ask him to let me remove this carpet.

Porkchops and applesauce...I'm imagining that scene now from the Brady Bunch where Peter tries out a new accent and personality!

DH, if ever there is a scrabble team tournament, I call you as my partner!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 6:34 PM

Snappy, I have one rug that valuable. The rest are sorta cheapies. They seek out the "good rug" to do their tossing on. My mom said it's because it's real wool and you know how wet wool smells. Doesn't matter how professional the cleaning is they're still going to prefer it.

Thanks for feeling my pain Snappy. You have a wonderful night.

Night all!

LOL...my husband and I played scrabble all weekend.

Love that!

"Djinn" is also spelled jinn (just in case you don't have that d!) and is the root of our English word "genie".

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 6:51 PM

yeah sixyears - and djinn also takes an I at the end (djinni) but i have no idea what that means!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 6:56 PM

Just means even more scrabble possibilities! Although djinni is definitely not the Arabic noun, just an Arabized version of "genie."
