Today's FGVOTD is another clip submitted by bayridgegirl (BRG) and features the oft-discussed (and often disgusting) Real Housewives of New York. This is a hilarious spoof of their recently aired reunion show.

Thanks BRG.

[crossing arms in disappointment; huffing & puffing]

I'll think of something sweet & dreamy to say later.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 21, 2009 9:24 AM

sadly this asshat going to have to opt out of the saturday pub crawl. i need to be a financially responsible asshat and with basically my entire paycheck this week going to june rent and not getting paid for another 2 1/2 weeks, it might just be best for me to skip this one... cuz i know me, and i have no self control hahaah. i will however put aside some fun money for the meet up in june :)

I think there was enough discussion at the end of yesterday's OT about dreamy things.

But speaking of sweet and dreamy, here is a classic song from the Eurythmics that I really like.

Rob, I'm sorry to hear that, but am happy to hear you're trying to be financially responsible. Please still email me Saturday; I would be happy to buy you a drink or two.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 9:32 AM

Rob - Did you run your credit check?

Posted by: Arkady at May 21, 2009 9:43 AM

Remember yesterday's discussion on Newburgh, NY?

NEW YORK — The FBI arrested four men Wednesday in what authorities called a plot to detonate a bomb outside a Jewish temple and to shoot military planes with guided missiles.

Officials told The Associated Press the arrests came after a long-running undercover operation that began in NEWBURGH, N.Y., about 70 miles north of New York City.

BRG, looks like you're not going to miss much if you head down south now. it's zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz here

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 9:50 AM

THL, somehow I knew you would bring this up today - as I was watching it this morning

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 9:52 AM

arklady i am going to do that today. IRS wound up telling me yesterday that it was a generic letter they sent with all the forms needed and that it didnt necessarily mean i needed to send in all of those listed *phew*
just my regular W2 which i KNOW i sent in the federal. i just forgot to send it in the state which they contacted me too so i wrote them back saying i resent it. such confusion for a stupid mistake.

Hi folks;

Since I may not be around tomorrow, I'd like to post my weekly NYC trivia quiz today. Here ya go....

In 1948, a classic movie was released. It was a unique film for its time, in that it combined a noir and docu-drama style. Also new for its time was that it was filmed on location, specifically in NYC. Indeed, though the film is nominally about a police case involving a murder, it was as much about life in NYC at that time, which was the expressed purpose of its producer (and narrator), who was a New Yorker.

The title of the film was a characterization of the city which became famous, and was used for decades to describe NYC (it is now almost forgotten). Another long-lasting legacy was the film's closing line. The film later spawned a TV series, in which the same closing line was used for each episode. Again, today that closing line is nearly forgotten.

So, today's trivia quix has three questions:

a) What was the name of the film?
b) What was the meaning of the characterization?
c) What was the famous closing line?

After someone identifies the film, I'll post some clips from it, as they are fascinating to watch (at least to me).

there's a lotto right now for newly construction condos in manhattan, affordable, to buy in central harlem if anyone is interested.

five 1 bedroom units will be sold for 150K, max income is 49,150 (ugh i totally fall under that!!!). i might apply anyway even tho i have no way of finding a deposit.
and

three 1 bedroom units for 175K max income 61,450.

the market rate units for 1 bedroom are 529K and 2 bedroom 589K and 3 bedroom 769K

anyway, im only writing this cuz this actually seems like the income requirements isnt as ridiculous as some others.

there's new constructed rentals on west 38th street in manhattan

17 studios, rent 471 but you have to make between 20K and 26,900 a year.

57 one bedrooms available for 504 dollars a monht you need to fall between 22,306 and 26,900.

A) Naked City
b) huh?
c) There are 8 million stories in the naked city this was one of them (or something like that)

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 10:00 AM

I know all the politicians and law enforcement going to make this sound like they are on top of the terrorist thing...but to me this group of losers not involved with anything larger and probably not real competent.
It is the organized political types (and intelligent) they could be a real threat. This bunch is more like small time small town losers looking for attention. More like the nut jobs that shoot a bunch of people at a school or mcdonaldns - not part of the international terrorist network.

Posted by: A CrownHeightsLady at May 21, 2009 10:03 AM

Wow, THL, you're fast! By the time I finished benson's post and was going to answer Naked City, you already had it.
That's my trivia partner, folks. I picked a winner.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 10:06 AM

I think benson's second question is where does the title come from/to what does it refer.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 10:15 AM

Judges, shall we give it to THL, noting that part b was not answered?

(Judges confer)

Yes, we have a winner!! Congratulations THL!! That was quick.

Here are the full answers:

a) Naked City
b) NY was called The Naked City because living in it stripped one of all pretenses (I'm not sure that this is true today as it was years ago).
c) "There are eight million stories in The Naked City. This has been one of them".

And now, to the clips...

Here is the ending, in which the closing line was recited. When I was a kid, I remember that adults used to use this line. After they would finish speaking about a neighbor, they would end the conversation paraphrasing this line. BTW, the narrator is Mark Hellinger, who was the film's producer and a famous Broadway columnist. He has the classic old NY nasal accent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh8o5OZEwkg

Here is my favorite clip. It is a scene of a police chase on the Lower East Side to the Williamsburg Bridge. I love the street scenes. This is the NY I love: teeming with life, small shops and folks dressed up just because they were going out in public. I'd love to be able to travel in time and walk the streets in those days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUO-tnJWhas&NR=1

Enjoy!

Ditto Naked City.

Rob - Yeah. Phew!

Posted by: Arkady at May 21, 2009 10:19 AM

benson, that was a great question and I really enjoyed your write-up and clips. Thanks for that. I love old movies, especially ones featuring New York (and Paris).

THL, did you see my FGVOTD? I thought you would get a kick out of it.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 10:26 AM

Yeah. I'd seen that one. It's a goody.

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 10:48 AM

hey DH, I'll be boozing with some fellow peeps in LES tonight. Do you recommend Barrio Chino or should I hit up some other place for dinner in that hood?

I am a bit embarrassed that I don't know any good places to eat in LES.

Hey Kens - If you can get a seat at Barrio Chino definitely go there. It's amazing. It tends to fill up around 7 (it's very tiny)

Les Enfantes Terribles is good french food on Canal and Ludlow right around the corner. They have outdoor seating.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 11:13 AM

More4less;

For 15 years I worked in an office park environment in New Jersey (Holmdel). My condolences.

Posted by: benson at May 21, 2009 11:14 AM

Thanks DH, noted and will hit up the french place if Barrio Chino has a long wait.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 11:17 AM

Kensingtonian, when you're plastered drunk and need some awesomely unhealthy food to fill your stomach at 1 AM, go to Pomme Frites at 2nd Ave and (I think) 6th or 7th and get some fries with Irish curry sauce. Their pomegranate teriyaki sauce is also good.

In one of life's small joys, a colleague has agreed to drive to L&B Spumoni Gardens and pick up some pizzas for lunch!

Then we'll have parent-teacher conferences, one of the most thoroughly depressing rituals of public education.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 21, 2009 11:31 AM

WTF? Ladies please give your input - are high waisted mom jeans back in style? i've seen a few girls walk by wearing them - they are not very bootie flattering at all.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 11:32 AM

Kens, here are some suggestions on LES:
TAPEO 029
29 Clinton Street
Great for tapa

Rayeula
165 allen street new york city
(b/t rivington & stanton)
tapa or dinner

Yerba Buena
23 Avenue A
(Second Street)
for dinner

Posted by: DeLepp at May 21, 2009 11:39 AM

Thanks sixyears, Been to Pomme Frites and correct, it's yummy but I try to stay relatively health these days (Need to keep my girlie figure and all).

L&B = yummmmm. I might just hit it up tomorrow after work before the AC trip.

Good luck with dealing with the parents. I don't know how you do it man! I would go postal on these damn kids after my first week there.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 11:41 AM

DeLepp, I was waiting to see you here to mention our pub crawl on Saturday night since you expressed interest. Looks like it's DH, wasder, sixyears and me so far. If you want to join us, email me.

sixyears, I replied to your email. I know you can't check during the day. Let me know if you want to meet us at the start and we'll wait for you there before moving on to the next place.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 11:43 AM

Thanks DeLepp. I've been dreaming of trying Barrio Chino after the conversations about it a couple of weeks ago but if there is a wait, I'll check out either the place DH recommended or your choices.

Greatly appreciated!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 12:11 PM

"i hate being touched by strangers, if they touched my arm i woulda flipped out."

At the Park Slope street fair I saw those shiatsu massage folks who go into the middle of a crowd and just start massaging their necks and shoulders in an effort to get them to come get a massage. Seems like a risky thing to do in New York.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 12:23 PM

I hear on good authority that you are going out in ***jeans*** tonight!

Posted by: wasder at May 21, 2009 12:37 PM

wasder, :-)
Indeed, I'm very excited about my plans for this evening.

I'm more than happy to go off course on Saturday to anywhere you think would be a good option and to anything we see along the way. Grand and Lafayette would be a perfect stop between Lox Lounge and Speakeasy. We can add it to the route. You can meet us there or at Speakeasy or at Rope, whichever works for you.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 12:42 PM

Works for me Biff - I'll be traveling via G train, so I may be extremely early or a little late - haha

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 1:26 PM

DH, I heard it's a two hour walk to the nearest subway in Williamsburg and the trains only come ever other day or so, so plan accordingly. :-)

I figure the early (7:30 start) is best since we might get sidetracked once or twice. Plus, we have a lot of joints to cover. (before you get too excited....joints at my age means bars or the place on your body you're most likely to get arthritis). Plus, it'll give you time to hop, skip to an after hour hipster party like you did last time.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 21, 2009 1:48 PM

LOL, you're the PL for sure.

I scooted outside for a while to enjoy the smell of someone cutting their grass. The birds are chirping like crazy. Even the wildlife is happy today.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 2:01 PM

WTF?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 2:04 PM

THL, JC ppty taxes in the downtown area is super high. Checked out a condo in paulus hook and was told the ppty was 14k. I asked the agent "you meant 1.4k right?" Man, that's expensive

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 2:08 PM

M4L, really? I looked at some properties in JC before I bought in brooklyn and taxes were really cheap.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 2:12 PM

No way! That's totally bonkers. Maybe they got a major reassessments for renovating? That's all I can think of.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 2:13 PM

I'm not right downtown but mine are 3,200 for a whole house. We even got reassessed this year.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 2:15 PM

Agent said the following on the ppty tax:
- paulus hook area is most expensive area in JC
- Paulus hook area at the water is super super high

I was checking out a unit at the water.

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 2:17 PM

jesus

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 2:18 PM

M4L that's just crazy. Sister paid 11k in taxes in Fort Lee for a whole house (not a little one either) in one of the best school districts in Bergen county.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 2:21 PM

Seriously, 14K is a total *ss r@pe.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 2:24 PM

I didn't get annoyed. I simply told agent I'll buy it if owner knocks 160k off the ask.

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 2:28 PM

That's worse then the 1.4k monthly common charges on that half a brooklyn heights townhouse that we all made fun of a few weeks ago.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 2:29 PM

Afternoon asshats! It's a beautiful day out there. Get outside and quaff a brew or two (or five)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 21, 2009 2:51 PM

DH, low ask - 5% disc - 160k add'l disc + no more NYC income tax = not a bad deal

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 2:54 PM

THL, scary about Newburgh. This is what happens when prices fall so low families can afford them. (joking -- I think.) And we are/were planning to drive up there Sunday for something to do, since we didn't realize this is a holiday weekend and didn't make plans.

DH, yes, high-waisted pants are back in style. Goodness, where have you been!? Opening Ceremony had a pair for $300 that really did look like mom jeans because they were light blue and kind of acid wash looking. I was thinking of having a jumpsuit party.

Posted by: mopar at May 21, 2009 3:03 PM

oh yeah - forgot about that silly city tax. what is that used for again?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 3:03 PM

DH, that lovely soon to be 4%+ NYC income tax is for the privilege to live in the 5 boroughs

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 3:05 PM

**I still own very light blue jeans**

Oh, the humanity! I've been outed as a walking fashion faux pax!!!

And, I like mom jeans! Those low rise jeans show too much tushie on me. I was surprised to find that they make ultra-low rise suit pants as well. Who goes to work in an office requiring you to wear a suit, but is ok with your bum hanging out??? Argh! Now I sound like my momma.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 21, 2009 3:08 PM

speaking of jeans, are those leg hugging / tight jeans "IN" now? it reminds me of days of younger years - ie jordache jeans of the 80's

Posted by: more4less at May 21, 2009 3:13 PM

haha good to know mopar. gotta love the acid wash jeans from the 80s - i'm still waiting for neon mc hammer style pants to come back (even though that's early 90s) i would totally rock those.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 3:20 PM

If Hammer pants come back in style, I swear I'm checking myself into a secluded nunnery so that I don't have to witness such atrocities!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 21, 2009 3:23 PM

haha snappy. i always thought you were "too legit to quit" like that!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 21, 2009 3:32 PM

Folks;

One thing to consider when comparing NY versus NJ income taxes. NYS and NYC allow for a mortgage interest deduction, whereas NJ does not. This may be a more significant factor than the comparison of marginal rates. On a per-capita basis, NJ spends more than NY. That money has to come from somewhere.

Posted by: benson at May 21, 2009 3:38 PM

Now that song is in my head DH!!! DAMN YOU!!!! :)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 21, 2009 4:15 PM

Benson, yes, I spoke pematurely, b/c I also missed yesterday's OT.

Mopar -- don't do the Beacon diner thing unless the price is really, really low; Beacon is hurting right now. The cutesy shops are starting to close. Dia Beacon is still going strong, but the first wave of downtown artsyfication was a bit too much too soon, given the downturn.

Great painted ladies on a sidestreet in Beacon near the train station, though. Fishscale siding and multi-color trim galore. Now, if you want Hudson Valley's answer to Bushwick, check out Peekskill.

DH, kitchen is ikea but unbelievable space. Total bachelor pad. I bet if you can find the space like that, we can reproduce this for way cheaper.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 21, 2009 4:38 PM

yeah kens - i wonder when they bought the space. is it a difficult process to getting a commercial property certified residential?

forget brownstones, my new dream pad is a pimped out gas station loft

DH mine is a small firehouse with the pole in the middle. I've seen the redone one along the Westside Highway. Talk about DREAMY!

Benson, mortgage interest deduction is little to no value when the freaking NYC income tax pushing you into AMT hell. That's why I paid off the freaking mortgage early.

I am off to thirsty thursday.

M4L I've been trying. It's hard to find an 85 year old with loads of money to leave to me who will croak very soon.

Slopefarm, good to know about Beacon. Very interesting. Do you know anyone who lives there?

Also, funny you should mention Peekskill. I am in fact attracted to it.

Did anyone see Sally Singer on The Selby today? Oh I love her. She lives in the Chelsea Hotel and has three children. (And from the look of it the three children share one room. What do you think of that!?)

no one is going to read so im talking to farts, but someone mentioned nj v. nyc taxes, well i lived in the projects in jersey and got a GREAT education (shut up) in public school, urban area.. taxes are high cuz they spent alot on us. sports, art, after school programs, finding jobs for senoirs who did not want to go to college, keeping the kick ass teachers around we all had respect for, funded project graduation where we all went out after graduation for free, good lunch program, peer group meetings, etc. that is where your tax dollars go. on facebook now 75 percent of my graduating hs class is successful.
